The British have another empire to be proud of: millinery. The art of British millinery has produced such names as Stephen Jones, Philip Treacy, Justin Smith, Prudence, and Noel Stewart. Stewart’s career as a milliner began as a student making ornamental items such as lampshades. At one point, he was asked to create a hat for a party, and from there launched his path to millinery. He takes on a global perspective for inspiration with a commercial and couture line. Stewart defies himself through the variety of material and shape creating wearable sculptures. He largely works with women’s wear designers, but also accepts private commissions. He has worked with Stephen Jones, Christian Dior Haute Couture, and Roland Mouret. From this side of the Atlantic to the other, we had a tête-à-tête with Mr. Stewart.

-Qualities you most admire in design: Integrity and innovation.

-Qualities you least admire in design: Laziness.

-Reading: Spirits of Place by Jane Brown & Wild Swimming.

-Dream project: collaboration with Balenciaga, Chanel, Lanvin, Celine, Christopher Kane.

-Favorite virtue: Honesty.

-Favorite vice: Honesty and sex.

-What clothing item best describes your personality? My egg yolk yellow Adidas.

-How would you describe your own look quickly? Very mixed.

-What is your favorite destination? Buenos Aires and Normandy.

-What is your investment piece or greatest fashion extravagance? My Sibling Leopard jumper

-What is your most marked characteristic? Changeability.

-If you could have someone else’s house, whose would it be? Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water

-Who are your fantasy lunch date guest/s? Eddie Sedgwick, Nureyev, Schlemmer, Tatlin, the Shah, Rock Hudson, Jeanne Lanvin, Alaia, Tina Turner, Lauren Bacall, Alice Channer.

-What can’t you travel without? My iPhone charger and my thimble.

-Whose diary would you like to read? Nureyev.

-Which words or phrases do you most overuse? AMAZING! It’s affordable and very good. For drinks, check out Mocca Lounge. With a funky interior and a menu of Italian inspired fare, it’s also a bar with a large list of coffees with or without alcohol, beers, and frozen shots. The creators draw on their East Asian heritages and beauty rituals to put together JUARA. Within their therapeutic body care line, the Candlenut Oil Hand and Body Balm ($25, 4.75 oz) is a luxuriant, nourishing lotion. It is a non-greasy, effective formula with the key ingredient of candlenut oil. An Indonesian staple, candlenut oil is an extremely hydrating plant oil that has a velvet feel and slight tropical aroma. I used the lotion after bathing as warm water can leave skin feeling parched. Instantaneously, my skin felt like silk and replenished.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdCAkWm-wI/AAAAAAAABA0/f-67yn1mFBY/s400/post_beauty.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239729268994800386" />Ashkan

Cozy Up in a Fur Collar Cardigan

Fall 2009 is all wrapped up in cozy luxe dressing. Fur is a major trend this season. Add just a touch of vintage appeal to your look with a fur collared cardigan. These cozy cardis can be dressed up or down. You can create a look that is sweet and demure or infused with a downtown urban edge. Fur collared cardigans are available in long and belted to short and cropped styles. Many of the collars are detachable, but be sure to remove the fur before washing or dry cleaning.

Distinctly vintage and feminine, Bryan Bradley's Cropped Cardigan, (upper left, $178 at NeimanMarcus.com) is pretty in pink with a brown natural rabbit collar. The pink cardigan is knit of a silk/cashmere blend and three-quarter sleeves. Juicy Couture's Faux-fur Trimmed Wool Cardigan, (right, $280 at Net-a-Porter) is a long belted cardigan. I especially love the puff shoulders which adds a modern twist to this self-belted style. Knit of 100% grey lambswool the sweater fastens with a concealed press-stud fastener at the front. Perfect for stylish recessionistas is a fantastic buy from Target. The Merona Fur-Collar Cardigan (middle left, $18.74) is a cotton/rayon blend with a faux fur collar. This button down style has a tie waist and the collar can be removed. Lastly, from Urban Outfitters is a cropped style featuring a curved single button front and a v-neck faux fur collar. The "Ecote" Cardigan (bottom left, $68 at Urban Outfitters) is a cotton acrylic blend and would pair nicely with a pair of your favorite jeans for a weekend casual look.

Save at Juicy Couture with coupons from TheFind.com's coupon site.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdCAkWm-wI/AAAAAAAABA0/f-67yn1mFBY/s400/post_beauty.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239729268994800386" />From our friends at thefind.com

The Daily Shortlist November 9

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 231px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SvLk_Isq2qI/AAAAAAAAEQ8/WhGx9egxcmA/s400/Sex+Lives+of+Robots+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5400630676488379042" />

Location: Murray Hill, NYC
Art: The Sex Lives of Robots
Show time: See website for schedule
Venue: Museum of Sex
Food: Seven’s Mediterranean Turkish Grill
Drink: Shalel Lounge
Miscellaneous: Boat Basin Cafe

If you’re bored of looking at historical art and objects, you might want to check out The Sex Lives of Robots at the Museum of Sex. In this exhibition, Michael Sullivan (who has 20 years as an animator, prop fabricator, and as a lighting designer) takes fashion dolls and figurines and transforms them into actors in this stop motion pornographic film by the same name. For good Mediterranean food on the UWS, Seven’s Mediterranean Turkish Grill is an excellent choice. Specializing in Pides (stuffed dough), they also serve most of the staple Turkish dishes. Hidden, though well worth the hunt, Shalel Lounge is a romantic spot with a cave-like atmosphere, and an excellent though pricey beer and wine list. Overlooking the water in Riverside Park, the Boat Basin Cafe is a really beautiful outdoor café with one of the best views of the Hudson River and NJ. You heard me, NJ! The menu is mostly burgers and sandwiches and plenty of BBQ. Best of all, it’s affordable and fun.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdDb9zxorI/AAAAAAAABBE/MnE8cnpOF9E/s400/post_shortlist.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239730839196115634" />

THEATER REVIEW: Made In Heaven

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/Su9nYsHFt1I/AAAAAAAAEO0/BTTnTbYFyqM/s400/Made+in+Heaven+play.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399648152095930194" />The press tag line for Jay Bernzweig’s Made In Heaven is “You’ve Never Seen a Family This Close” …and I can assure you, you haven’t!

Max (Kevin Thomas Collins) and Benjie (Alex Anfanger) are conjoined twins, waddling, rumbling, jumping (sharing one penis) across the Soho Playhouse stage in this comedy that will pretty much keep you yucking through the entire 90-minutes. Looking for love in all the wrong or right places the play opens on the eve of the brother’s proposal to their girlfriend “Jessica,” played brilliantly by Maia Madison (so brilliantly, despite the other stand-out performances, MM steals the show), but a new secret emerges and just when you think things can’t get any weirder….they do. Into the mix comes Gilbert, played with gusto by the very hunky Matthew Bondy and all hell brakes loose.

It all gets quite sexual (but always funny) as the four engage in their 30-day ‘experiment’ of cohabitation and if there really isn’t much of an arc here, there doesn’t truly need to be for you to enjoy Made In Heaven. Andrew Shaifer’s direction is top-notch (seeing that we have one set to deal with and a lot of tough blocking) and Lex Liang’s scenic design is to be commended. But go to laugh and go for Maia Madison, she is very special.

Made In Heaven is playing at the Soho Playhouse (one of my personal favorite theaters in NYC) now until January 3, 2010 HERE

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 34px; height: 40px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SSiNZehVXDI/AAAAAAAABgc/pag0Lu4kTtg/s200/Theater+icon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271618832666287154" />Ralph Greco, Jr.

I WAS THERE . . . Nozuka's knack for blending--not burying--these styles together creates an understated aesthetic that is all his own. While acoustic performances are his apparent strong suit, popular tracks from Nozuka's debut album, like "Golden Train," benefited from his talented bandmates.

Distinct and expressive, Nozuka's vocals maintain the crisp integrity found on his debut album, Holly. One soulful track titled "Supposed to Grow Old" highlights Nozuka's humane lyrics brought to life by an unexpected emotional tonality. Nozuka's sincerity makes his music that much more enjoyable for an audience whose sing-along tendencies boasted for the humble and talented musician.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" /> Nicole Velasco

SEX: My Night In a Dungeon

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 322px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/Sus3jTCcqCI/AAAAAAAAEOE/vfpKmEXOsHM/s400/Dugeon+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398469657879160866" />We all know there isn't anything you can't get, day or night, in this great big city of ours. Name the cuisine and you'll find it, theater/movies/music…we have it all! Even, dare I mention it, when it comes to sex. Yes, you can indulge your fantasies aplenty in the Big Apple and Jezebel's might just be the preeminent place to do it.

This place for the BDSM minded (that's bondage and discipline for you not in the know) is located in the South Street Seaport area. Unlike other dungeons, Jezebel's is less about trappings then they are about service. Mistress Jezebel strives for a welcoming atmosphere, "You're as likely to get mac and cheese in my dungeons as anything else," she said, once again flashing me that great big smile of hers. I happened in for the Halloween party, and the minute I climbed the staircase everyone, from the guy at the front door to every one of the 15 mistresses greeted me with a warm smile and a great big hello. This is not the typical space with a weird shadowy vibe and imposing rooms dressed like a movie set. This is a professional space for men and women to ply a fantasy or two, make a connection with a woman who understands their need and leave knowing they are welcomed back any time.

"I love this area of town," the alluring African American lady of the house told me. "My neighbors all know what I do, they are all very accepting. A lot of my clients come from this area, I love it here." In fact hers' is the only place of it's kind 'down there' in the Seaport area.

And Mistress Jezebel is aware of her client's needs even when it comes to their wallets. As she told me, "After November it seemed we were getting only two to three costumers a day; I knew we had to make it up in volume even if we charged less. So I lowered the prices and my clients almost quadrupled. I have had many a new costumer say they came strictly for the price, but came back again for the girls."

Check out Mistress Jezebel's on the web HERE and tell them Ralph sent you.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 34px; height: 40px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SSiNZehVXDI/AAAAAAAABgc/pag0Lu4kTtg/s200/Theater+icon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5271618832666287154" />Ralph Greco, Jr.

The Weekend Shortlist November 6 to 8

Friday November 6

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SvBcZPGooiI/AAAAAAAAEPs/BjaGuxdv3RQ/s320/reindeerwithcoffeecup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5399917541838070306" />Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Art: Brad Nack: 100% reindeer art tour
Show time: 7 PM
Venue: Desert Island
Food: Dumont Burger
Drink: Radegast Hall & Biergarten
Miscellaneous: Verb Cafe

Santa Barbara artist Brad Nack paints reindeer. Many attribute this wave to the highly publicized Jon Benet Ramsey tragedy. Regardless, those of us not born and bred in pageant-friendly communities are most likely to take the side of the cynical “Little Miss Sunshine” and newly released, “Whip It,” indie-take on these spectacles. Indeed, Anderson seems to be offering the glamourific world a voice, but ultimately may reinforce the all-too familiar cliché that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Anderson’s introductory comments on the “confectionary” feel of a pageant she attends at the Annual Dixieland Dolls and Darlings National Beauty Pageant describe the endless ribboned-up, spray-tanned, pinkified children milling about a hotel lobby. Despite the great detail, her words seem careful, and do not in any way reflect a cynical intent. Her photos, however, are truly revealing. Page after page of makeup-clad young girls reveal expressions of hope, fear, misery, excitement and gloom. For example, one page reveals Sasha, perfectly posed with a pasted grin laden with people-pleasing stiffness. Her eyelids are covered with glitter and her pink (of course) dress seems to have lost a fight with a bedazzler. Just one page later we find Cameron, whose cupcake-inspired ruffled dress and stick-straight posture do little to contrast her down-turned mouth and piercing brown eyes. Worse yet is page 34’s “Beauty” (yes, that’s her name), whose mountainous blonde curls look as though they could cause her to topple over. This time there is no mistaking her lipsticky pout for a full-on frown, and I have a feeling that it’s not only because her dress is covered in pink bows, sequins and faux fur to weigh her down.

However, for those who explore this book with genuine interest may appreciate the final pages, which include a guide for elements of beauty/formal wear, talent, western wear, modeling, hair, interview, photogenic-ness, and yes, even “flippers” (think: fancy dentures).

Regardless of one’s stance on the world of beauty pageantry for children, Anderson succeeds in publishing a refreshingly honest and seemingly unbiased glimpse of this highly controversial social custom in all of its glory. The photographs speak for themselves and allow all readers to choose whether they want to consider it a mockery or a celebration.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA21N-WRI/AAAAAAAABAk/p6sXuY3Jyq4/s400/post_bookreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728002211666194" />Jessica Stein

The Daily Shortlist November 5

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 251px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/Sum1YTxWoWI/AAAAAAAAENc/oHlqpiLQ7-o/s320/Paul+Auster+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398045057609015650" />Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Talk: Paul Auster
Show time: 7 PM
Venue: Barnes and Noble (Union Square)
Food: Chat ‘N’ Chew
Drink: Pete’s Tavern
Miscellaneous: Whole Foods

See one of the best New York writers alive today as Paul Auster discusses his newest novel Invisible. One good thing about the Union Square location of Whole Foods is that it’s not only a reprieve from this tourist heavy area, but with it’s huge windows, you can sit, get healthy organic food and drink, and watch the insanity like it’s a movie.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdDb9zxorI/AAAAAAAABBE/MnE8cnpOF9E/s400/post_shortlist.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239730839196115634" />

MUSIC REVIEWS: Roseanne Cash, Kristina Train, Inglourious Basterds OST, Broken Records, 17 Hippies, Budos Band, Cause Co-Motion!, Jon Reep

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SsoUokHeccI/AAAAAAAAEAQ/2qMTvv4ukM0/s200/Roseanne+Cash+album.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5389142591224574402" />Rosanne Cash
The List
(Manhattan)

On her 12th studio album, The List, Rosanne Cash interprets some songs from the list of "100 Essential Country Songs" her dad gave her way back when to help educate her to country music. Opening with the perfect Jimmie Rogers' "Miss the Mississippi and You," this great version features some sweet single guitar playing from Cash's producer and husband John Leventhal and Rosanne sounding like Pasty Cline. "Sea of Heartbreak" (featuring Bruce Springsteen) is an ok duet at best, but duets with Elvis Costello on the very commercial "Heartaches By Number" and shuffling "Silver Wings" with Rufus Wainwright fare better.

"Take These Chains From My Heart" has some simple single bass notes, brush snare and great vocal from Cash, again mining that old-time country like on "Mississippi." "I'm Moving On" sounds like the band playing Tom Waits behind Cash's vocal, but I'm afraid this one doesn't ever really get going for me. But the two tunes that might just slice you open are Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" recalling as it does the infamous duet done by Rosanne's dad and Mr. Zimmerman…though Rosanne makes this version her own. I actually had to play it a few times just to hear her sing the line: "Please see she has a coat so warm to keep her from the howling winds." Wow! And the last tune, The Carter Family's "Bury Me Under the Weeping Willow” is near perfect heartache to end The List and our education.

Ralph Greco, Jr.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SutQUhZXHkI/AAAAAAAAEOU/87ec525ILqc/s200/Kristina+Train+album.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398496891826019906" /> Kristina Train
Spilt Milk
(Blue Note Records)

Kristina Train’s debut album Spilt Milk is a gorgeous jazzy album with a good serving of R&B, Soul, and Motown added to it. Train’s vocals are sexy and sultry, and on this album she gives it her all. Some comparisons to Carole King have been made and hints of it are prevalent. Although, her voice shines the best when she hits the more soft and vulnerable notes that are subtly delicate, yet just as powerful. There’s a raspy and soulful quality to her vocals that stands out on its own. At times her voice reminds me of Cat Power mixed with an Aretha Franklin soulful influence. Standout songs for me include the title track “Spilt Milk,” which is a classy jazz tune that is accompanied by pianos and a soft rhythm. The song is both soulful and sultry. Another great track is “I Can’t But Help,” which is a classic number that adds all the right elements of rhythm, soulfulness, and a catchy blues sound.

Throughout the album the musical background provides an old Motown feel, complete with backup vocals, horns, and jazzy elements. There’s an even mix of slower ballads and moving R&B numbers. The true star of the album, however, is her outstanding vocals. While Train may be a new addition to the blues genre, her voice remains eternal and classic, withstanding the test of time. She is definitely one artist to watch as her talent and range continues to unfold.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Trish Nguyen

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SsOp6Kd6SWI/AAAAAAAAD8w/o8phr8pbZ-4/s200/Inglourious+Basterds+OST.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5387336395972561250" />Inglourious Basterds Soundtrack
(Warner Brothers)

A perfect companion for the film, this collection straddles the line between soundtrack and score, performing superbly. Opening with a composition befitting a grand Spaghetti Western, one can almost see the curtain rise upon the words “Once upon a time in Nazi Occupied France.” I’ll admit, unless you’ve seen the film, the majority of the album might not be for you just yet. Part of the joy is associating the tracks with the different parts of the film they played over. Still, “The Green Leaves of Summer” is a perfect opening track that is quickly followed by the king of Spaghetti Western composers; Ennio Morricone.

Then we’re in for some high funky notes as “Slaughter” blares out, a nod to exploitation films that Tarantino still emulates. But then it’s straight back to Morricone’s music. Slow drum, rhythmic acoustic guitar, and tense piano lead up to a crescendo crushing the speakers in the form of a blaring brass horn and pressing violins. Always captivating, the master composer lends considerable power and life to the track list, acting as a touchstone listeners frequently return to over the album’s duration.

Along the way you’re in store for some more cool instrumentals, songs with early 20th century German/French flair, as well as vaudevillian era songs sung in both languages. Check out the “Main Theme from Dark Sun” as an interesting track with really great strings. The Bowie song “Cat People (Putting Out the Fire)” is the most surprising and enjoyable gem on the album. It’s a classic and killer cut showing the contemporary nature of the film. Indeed, the track kicks off the ending of the album with a strong showing.

Again Morricone is used; a pair of his tracks graces the back end of the soundtrack. The first is a sad warble of farewell, tears, and death. However the second is a double killer with jangling incessantness and a desert gypsy vibe. Both combine to create a certain kind of Death Ballad that I believe goes to the heart of the revenge fantasy of the film itself. Definitely worth checking out!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Kenneth Joachim

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SrE9boWpbeI/AAAAAAAAD0I/dchw0ZhPpVs/s200/Broken+Records+album.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382150574582623714" />Broken Records
Until the Earth Begins to Part
(4AD)

Without asking one could guess that Broken Records is a band born of the Celtic Isles steeped in the melancholy sound that is so common in Celtic music. Though I did enjoy Until the Earth Begins to Part overall, it is best held for a rainy day. The entire album is heart felt and the vocals slap you with the emotion that the band puts into their music.

Broken Records employs some of the more interesting instrumentation that I’ve heard, using: guitar, piano, accordion, mandolin, fiddle (we are speaking of a Celtic band), cello, and even a little brass. Each instrument is active through the entirety of the album, which does cause a bit of a problem. Though every song is well composed, at times you don’t know what you’re supposed to pay attention to: horn, guitar, piano or vocals. The pace also gets a little old. The album picks up briefly with “A Good Reason” but is the next to last track. It might have been better placed somewhere near the middle of the line up.

The instrumentation is a lot fun. It’s nice to hear such a creative collection of instruments in modern music. I did enjoy the entire album, I just felt tired afterwards. A marathon of melancholy will do that to you. Broken Records is not a band that was meant to be background music. Final verdict; all my criticism can be summed up in two words, too much. They tend to use a bit too much (instrumentation, vocals, melancholy tone) all the time. I would, however, still recommend this for anyone who likes to listen to music intently. If you want music you can find something new in every time, this is for you.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Jonathon L. The sheer amount of energy exuded on the first track “Uz” is reason enough to listen to the rest of the album. The rising intensity of the strings creates a menacing mood that is quite addictive, whether you’re familiar with the language or not. (I’m not. Who knows what they’re saying.) The aesthetically engaging video for the song showcases some of the instruments that create their full sound.

Sultry singing and sauntering instruments move the second song along at a smoldering stroll that makes “Adieu” quite different from the first track, and “Stern am Ende der Welt” has an endearing, rambling detached quality about it.

On their website they describe the key components of their sound: “Our groove foundation is bass, banjo, guitar, and ukulele (and sometimes accordion and tenor horn), and then we add cello, violins, clarinets, trumpet, and trombone.” The Berlin band has written the score for a couple of movies, so it makes sense this music would make great background music. Or even better, roadtrip music, and it can provide the background to your own madcap plot.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Amy Hamblen

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/Sr0dqBY96NI/AAAAAAAAD5E/ctQZqdqaaB4/s200/Budos+Band+EP.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5385493337169848530" />The Budos Band
The Budos Band EP
(Daptone Records)

The Budos Band EP represents the latest progression of the eleven piece afro-funk ensemble. From their start, Budos has always had a complex, layered, deep rhythmic sound, but with each album (this is their third) they’ve advanced to new levels of intricacy and depth.

If their first album was an introduction, a beginning of exploration to the concept, and their second a refinement or improvement, The EP is a continuation of that process. The grooves are more enchanting, more captivating and ornate. The principal strength of Budos has always been its power and strength generated by their ability to mend sharply contrasting sounds like the deep baritone sax and the sharp, piercing, trumpets all the while maintaining a steady groove with their unshakable rhythm section. That theme is continued upon and improved in this EP.

While Budos is often in between genres and classifications, they have always been and will continue to be universally funky. If you like the first two albums, you're going to really like this one.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Marc Amigone

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SrFPcmsZy4I/AAAAAAAAD0g/o6i-uoHIv-s/s200/Cause+Co+motion+EP.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5382170382526172034" />Cause Co-Motion!
Because, Because, Because EP
(Slumberland)

The fellas of Cause co-Motion! are a trip to see live. Their high energy music, saturated in post-punk pop, makes for a good time. Their newest EP, Because, Because, Because released on Slumberland Records, is much like their other stuff. Lucky for them, their stuff is pretty good. On this record, there are of course the band’s signature jangly guitars, military sounding drum patterns, and short numbers. Then there’s the slower tempo, a big change but the band still manages to sound like their usual self. “It’s Time,” is the standout track and even sounds a bit like early Ramones. Only once does a song on the six track EP make it past two minutes, and that’s the other big change. The last track “You lose,” is of monumental significance as it is the first time one of their tunes ever crossed the two minute mark. It left me wanting more.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" /> Dezzy Ramdeen

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SuTl6dpbgEI/AAAAAAAAELI/3PVwsQb8nZ0/s200/Jon+Reep+album.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396691046050267202" />Jon Reep
Metro Jethro
(WEA/Reprise)

Watching Jon Reep’s new DVD, Metro Jethro, is like getting stuck in a conversation with my alcoholic uncle at a family party after his first case of beer: nothing is funny, everything sort of slurs together, and most of the time my mind is focused solely on escape. Reep was ushered to the spotlight thanks to winning Last Comic Standing back in 2007 and is well known as the “HEMI” guy from commercials but his latest CD/DVD goes beyond dull to the “I want my time back” category.

The comic’s material focuses mainly on his own life growing up in Hickory, North Carolina and his family but rather than making you laugh it elicits that same kind of mental drift one gets from waiting in line for an hour. His delivery is a little odd and sounds like he is doing his act after a triathlon and while the affectation is a bit annoying, the real mystery is figuring out how and why the audience is laughing. Jon’s “best” material is the most personal but it lacks originality and innovation and the fellas from Blue Collar should get a hardy thanks for the jokes that almost work. The package comes with a bunch of extras that also don’t deliver and the real highlight of the CD/DVD might be the “Metro Jethro” theme song which does seem to get stuck in your head. In all, Reep may have been thrust into the upper echelon of comedy before he was ready so look out 2020, Jon Reep might be taking over!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdA7CxZi3I/AAAAAAAABAs/lAQskb8cAcg/s400/post_musicreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239728074569386866" />Tim Needles

The Daily Shortlist November 4

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SumpWN2Z9FI/AAAAAAAAENU/CQjKP_RIpTY/s320/Thao+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5398031827520320594" />Location: Lower East Side, NYC
Bands: Thao & the Get Down Stay Down + Portland Cello Project Get Tickets Here
Show time: 9 PM
Venue: Bowery Ballroom
Food: Social
Drink: 151
Miscellaneous: Bereket

On her new release Know Better Learn Faster Thao & the Get Down Stay Down continue making sweet indie pop goodness. One up-and-coming DJ/producer known as Max Tannone has perfected this skill within projects like “Jaydiohead” and “Double Check Your Head;” two mash-ups that will find their way onto your iPod very soon, if not already. Here, I speak with Tannone about how he got into the music business, the unexpected success of Jaydiohead and what fans can expect from him in the future.

Do you still go by Minty Fresh Beats, or do you prefer Max Tannone?

I go by my name, Max Tannone. There was a legal issue involving the name "Minty Fresh Beats," and I can no longer use it.

What or who first influenced you to want to make music? Has being a DJ/Producer always been a dream of yours, or did it evolve over time?

It evolved over time. I was always interested in computers, and I got a few pieces of music software and just started playing around. I ended up spending a lot of time at it, and it just kind of became a thing that I did. Before getting into computer-based music, I started playing the drums, which I still enjoy doing. Now that I think about it, much of my musical proficiency was very rhythm driven and so is hip-hop music, coincidentally. Playing the drums definitely helped me understand how to build a beat.

Definitely. So have you lived in New York your whole life? How has this city affected your work, if at all?

I haven't. I used to live in Manhattan, and then I moved away to upstate NY for most of my life...I just moved back about a year ago. Since I moved to the city I've put more sirens in my songs...and started using less chirping birds (laughs.) The city is just so full of energy, and the people have seen so much that you can be as weird as you want and it doesn't matter. I like to make my music a little weird.

Weird is always good in these times. So for those unfamiliar with the term, what exactly is a mash-up, and what attracted you to this concept?

A mash-up is basically combining music that was never "intended" to go together. With Jaydiohead, it was the challenge of making two artists from different worlds sound cohesive and sound like they were in the studio together. With my Beastie Boys project, I combined the Beastie Boys with themselves, but essentially it’s the same… re-contextualizing something.

What is your thought process when coming up with new ideas for mash-ups? (Are you a fan of all the music you use, or do you seek out music that is unknown to you? Does genre play a factor?)

I find that it helps to be a fan of the music you use. If I'm planning a project, I already have a rough idea of what would sound good with what. Furthermore, you are already familiar with the fan bases of the artist, who generally likes them, etc. I have Jay-Z's and Radiohead's entire discography on my iPod.

And who would’ve known they’d work so well together! So how exactly did the concept of Jaydiohead come about? Were you surprised at its success? And will there be a third installation of Jaydiohead in the future?

The first track I made was "Wrong Prayer," which I actually made about a year before the bulk of Jaydiohead. I had thought about doing the project for a long time - and I finally did it. Again, it was the challenge to see if I could do it and satisfy my own requirements for it sounding "good." When I was done, I liked it and decided to make a quick site for it. I did not expect it to take off like it did. For now, I'm not planning on doing anymore Jaydiohead...I mean if I get inspired I could do some more...but for now I want to focus on other stuff.

Awesome… anything in specific?

I mentioned this quickly earlier - but I just finished a project with the Beastie Boys called Doublecheck Your Head. I made the project in support of the Beastie Boys recent reissue of their Check Your Head album (one of my personal favorites.) The concept is that the Beastie Boys are mashed up with themselves, rapping over tracks and sampling their own instrumentals, with all vocals and sampled elements coming from Check Your Head.

You can listen or download it for free here: www.doublecheckyourhead.com.

Who has been your favorite artist/musician to work with thus far? What bands or musicians would you love to collaborate with in the future?

Well with these projects I haven't worked with the artists directly - instead just working with their acapellas or pre-existing tracks. So I haven't had a lot of experience physically working with other musicians. As far as the future, there are so many people I'd love to work with, I couldn't begin to list them...I think Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John is a dope producer - he would be cool to work with.

Interesting! For fans of yours that live in the area, are there any hotspots or places that you frequent where people can hear you mix?

Not yet. I'm in the process of further developing my DJ sets. So far, everything I've done is "in-studio"… production stuff. I'm looking to get more into live stuff, but my heart will always be production; behind the scenes, so to speak.

Besides being a DJ and producer, is there anything else in your career musically that you'd like to try?

I used to play the guitar quite a bit; I want to get back into it. I want to take piano lessons too...the piano is so bad-ass, and every time I see someone play I wish I could do it! Someday.

For more info on Max Tannone, check out his MySpace page.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdCoo2m7qI/AAAAAAAABA8/RRYAA8brMwg/s400/post_interview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239729957397524130" />Lucy Tonic

The Daily Shortlist November 3

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 290px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/Suh47J8es5I/AAAAAAAAENM/SpStgub19Os/s400/Peru+Ana+Ana+Peru+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397697111080743826" />Location: Bushwick, Brooklyn
Art: And Then We Jumped Into the Abyss of Numbers: Memories in Absurdity from the Bowels of Peru Ana Ana Peru
Show time: See venue website for schedule; FREE; Through November 14
Venue: Brooklynite Gallery
Food: Northeast Kingdom
Drink: Life Café Nine 83
Miscellaneous: Stain

You’ve seen the graffiti around Brooklyn “Peru Ana Ana Peru” right? The line was created by the spouse of an international diplomat. The organic health and skincare line has been used to teach seminars and workshops to empower African women. The full range line boasts products for men and women. After shave products for men tend to have high alcohol contents and preservatives that habitually irritate the skin. While the packaging is reminiscent of an “old lady product” according to a fellow user, the post shave lotion is useful. It provides a decent balance of moisture and calm. The price point ($10) was exceptional in proportion to the amount of product and amount needed for application. There was a distinct aroma of lemon lime and bergamot. If it wasn’t for the dated packaging and we knew its efficacy, we would purchase this one!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdCAkWm-wI/AAAAAAAABA0/f-67yn1mFBY/s400/post_beauty.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239729268994800386" />Ashkan

Punch It Up with the Perfect Poncho

Ponchos are making an appearance again this fall in the form of chunky knits. Think handmade, warm and cozy. Many are a fusion of sweater and poncho that button up the front, making them easier to layer. You'll see hoods, pockets and zippers as added features as well. Look for all wool styles made with thick yarns and lots of texture in the knitted design. Or try a lighter poncho on for size; it is more like a wrap and much more fluid than chunkier styles. Go for a neutral like gray or brown that can be paired with a variety of items in your wardrobe.

On the chunkier side, from Haute Hippie is the Chunky Wool Poncho (top left, $495.00 at Nordstrom.com) with classic overtones and a cable-knit design. It has a full zip-front closure, pockets to keep your hands warm and a slouchy hood at the back. From Stella McCartney is a pricey and luxe Zip-Front Boucle Poncho (top right, $1,685 at Neiman Marcus) with oversized buttons button as an accent on the cape sleeves. The poncho is an Alpaca/linen/polyamide/wool blend and made in Italy. Helmut Lang has also done a version, all in a minimalist style of course! Helmut Lang Knit Poncho (bottom right, $260 at Saks.com) is an alpaca/merino/polyamide blend and is super soft as well as warm. This poncho also features a generous hood. From Elizabeth and James is the Olivia Poncho, (bottom left, $545 at Shopbop.com) made of moleskin this is the perfect piece for layering. Writers/performers Daniel Jenkins and Robert Stanton take the audience on a hysterical journey in the current production of Love Child at New World stages, offering varying insight from a variety of colorful characters into a particularly rocky opening night.

It could have been easy for less talented actors to lose the audience in the constant shift of characters and scenes, but the intensely physical performances offered by Jenkins and Stanton evoke uproarious laughter from the audience, and perspiration from the performers. The small touches they each add to their multitude of roles certainly pays off, allowing the audience to recognize which voice they were about to hear, before even a single word is uttered.

While definitely offering something extra for anyone who has worked in the theater, or considers himself or herself an avid fan, Love Child still holds strong as a comedy for novices as well. The set, skillfully designed by Neil Patel, offers some insight into the mind of the characters and their previous (and judging by the humorous titles, most likely failed) theatrical ventures. While the slow beginning caused me to momentarily long for a revival of Gutenberg! the Musical, Love Childquickly regained control of my attention and held strong all the way through to deliver a triumphant and seemingly exhausting ending. With tight direction from Carl Forsman, once the pace is set, the production never lets up, offering a truly laugh-a-minute experience.

Love Child plays at New World Stages through January 3. The last time I saw them live was the first time. I won tickets off a radio station to see a young and unpolished Weezer at the small Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1994 right after their debut album Weezer was released and just before they broke big time. Being one of only 200 people seeing them at the equally small P.C. Richard & Son Theater in Tribeca brought back a lot of memories, and it was interesting to see how Weezer had changed since, now with 15 years of Rock N Roll experience under their belt.

Though their set was only 40 minutes, recorded for the website iheartradio.com, Rivers Cuomo and the gang showed that they not only still have it but that they’ve mastered it. Rivers started things off solo with a string section and a drummer covering Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida,” exaggerated hand gestures and all. Then the rest of the band came on stage all dressed in matching track suits to kick things into full gear. Starting things off with a song from their new album Raditude, they went right into "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" which seemed to fit into their catalogue of hits just fine. The short set saw the band play “Say it Ain’t So” and “Buddy Holly” off their first album Weezer, “Why Bother?” off Pinkerton and “I’m Your Daddy” off Raditude. Probably the best part of the show was watching Rivers run around on stage during each song mixing rock poses and dancing around like an awkward nerd. It’s that kind of energy which has probably helped make their music last. That and the ability to write great songs built to last.

To see the performance, go to iheartradio.com HERE

DaVe Lipp

THEATER REVIEW: Embraceable Me

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 185px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SuXDiu2Q3jI/AAAAAAAAEME/fp05DtdmRw0/s400/EmbraceableMe+logo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396934729932004914" />Really, how can you go wrong at an 80-minute play at the comfortable quaint Kirk Theatre at Theatre Row?

Victor L. Cahn's Embraceable Me is a light two-person progression of a relationship. There are sometimes a little too many audience asides, some lines that could have cut deeper, even some interesting character background that might have been explored more, but for the most part you come down to liking Edward and Allison as their story unfolds in flashbacks and those asides. For me the play really gets going at the mid-way point, past all the fits and starts of the first half where the audience finds out where we are and the solid places we get back to.

The character of Edward, played perfectly by Scott Barrow is written a little too cliché for my tastes but Barrow fleshes him out rather nicely by mid point, whereas Keira Naughton's Allison kinda 'circles the ol' airport' a bit on who and what she's made out of (to no fault of a believable Naughton). Mostly by the middle to the end you’re rooting for these two off-kilter people and even though the conclusion was a little light, Cahn's piece is a good time.

As my friend Jennifer remarked, it is quite the task to remember all that dialogue and seeing as Barrow and Naughton are your only two choices of who to like (or not) they are engaging as far as this play goes. Kudos also goes to Carolyn Wong for her perfect lighting design as times and places change all on one set.

Embraceable Me at Theatre Row's Kirk Theatre, 410 W. 42nd St. runs until November 14. Ulysses is the precursor to the Spaghetti Westerns of the 60s, produced by Dino De Laurentis the man who later made Conan, and has a majority of Italian actors in it, including all the Female leads. The majority of the film taking place during flash backs, the story and craft of the film hold up.

The cast all speak Italian and are dubbed, save for Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn. Speaking his native English, the elder Douglas showcases haunted eyes, strong face, small but cut frame exhibited in Greco Roman wrestling match scene the actor performs in. Douglas gives an all around stand out performance, especially during the Sirens scene and the Wine Dance montage when facing the Cyclops.

Anthony Quinn as Antinous is amazing in each scene as well, showing the power of this actor in his younger days. The seduction of Penelope (Silvana Magano) by Antinous is an amazingly powerful and passionate scene though nary a kiss is planted. Indeed, Magano does an admirable job and has a great monologue near the end of the film.

The sea is the constant thread throughout the film, its main trope if you will. Opening on the sea, which begins to stand for the God that is keeping Ulysses from home, we then see Ulysses being washed up onto a beach. Rescued but struck with amnesia, the hero heads to the sea to remember his past. The sea plays a prominent role in his violent return to Ithaca as well.

Called a ‘Lush Adaptation’ in the back cover copy, this DVD gives us a film with amazingly intricate studio backgrounds, hoards of supporting characters, and bewildering costumes. In short, a lavish film that resembles a play in acting and set design and was top shelf for its time. Standing out, the Siren scene brings all the elements of great acting on Douglas’ part, great use of sound to enhance the tension of the scene, and the old school production values that still impress.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdE5ANufRI/AAAAAAAABBc/R6fGNpLieYU/s400/post_film.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239732437569666322" />Kenneth Joachim

The Weekend Shortlist October 30 to November 1

Friday October 30

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 303px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SuW2eiBQsbI/AAAAAAAAEL0/5gaTBgRg-fY/s400/WHO+SHOT+ROCK+%26+ROLL+COVER.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5396920364117832114" />Location: Prospect Heights, Brooklyn
Art: Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955–Present
Show time: Wed to Fri 10 AM to 5 PM, Sat & Sun 11 AM to 6 PM
Venue: Brooklyn Museum
Food: Tom’s Restaurant
Drink: Soda Bar
Miscellaneous: Old Brooklyn Parlor

In this exhibition Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955–Present (also part of the book by the same name by Gail Buckland just released) it’s the photographers who get center stage instead of the famous musicians they photographed acknowledging their role in the history of rock. From Richard Avedon’s photos of The Beatles to David LaChapelle’s pics of Lil Kim, the history of rock is told in photos. It’s the place where Susanne Vega wrote “Tom’s Restaurant,” but Tom’s Restaurant is just as famous for its food. With a near insane breakfast menu, expect items like pancakes with apples and pecans to be brought to you by the sweetest waitresses in Brooklyn. Soda Bar is a great place for drinks. The alcohol is cheap, there’s surprisingly excellent food, and there’s even another room where DJs spin. If it’s too much, you can hang outside in the backyard patio under the stars. The Old Brooklyn Parlor specializes in old school drinks like the Brooklyn Egg Cream and the Lime Cherry Rickey, making it an excellent anchor to this neighborhood.

Friday October 30

Location: Gramercy Park, NYC
Bands: The Day Before Halloween Party
Show time: 9 PM
Venue: SPiN New York
Food: New York Burger Co.
Drink: Rodeo Bar
Miscellaneous: Organique

Come celebrate Halloween a few hours early as Susan Sarandon hosts The Day Before Halloween Party, which includes a screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the new table tennis venue SPiN New York. Oh, and it’s okay to wear a costume. Taking burgers to the next level, New York Burger Co. builds their burgers with high quality ingredients, delivering a better take on a classic. More white trash than urban cowboy, the Rodeo Bar offers live music, Tex-Mex food, and daily Happy Hour specials like margaritas for $5 and draft beers for $3. For the health conscious, Organique offers organic food including soups, coffee, omelets, burgers, and sandwiches.

Saturday October 31

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SslN5uCHRzI/AAAAAAAAD_Y/wnYYYc03qNQ/s400/Nightmare+Vampires.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5388924083130287922" />Location: Noho, NYC
Event: Nightmare: Vampires Get Tickets Here
Show time: See website for performance schedule; Through November 7
Venue: Noho Event Center
Food: Babbo
Drink: The Dove
Miscellaneous: Café Reggio

If you take your Halloween seriously, you’ve probably already planned your costume out and have been practicing your naughtiest faces for a while now. Now that it’s finally Halloween, you can finally transform from ordinary worker bee during the day to blood thirsty monster by night. If you’re not hitting up the parade, check out Nightmare: Vampires, an original horror story set in the Museum of Vampyric Artifacts (MoVa) that sees you confronting Vampire legends from the media, movies and from around the world and running for your life from them. Looks like the Halloween season is upon us! One of the six Italian eateries of celebrity chef Mario Battali, Babbo takes Italian American cooking to another level. While the food can be expensive and reservations would be the best way to get a table, this place is highly regarded among food connoisseurs is is nothing short of amazing. Disguised as a lounge The Dove is really a neighborhood bar dressed up in red, white, and gold décor with a nice selection of beers on tap and a very good mixed drink menu featuring delicious martini’s. One of my favorite coffee houses, Café Reggio has the most literate and West Village atmosphere I have been to. A real slice of New York, it was also in the movie Superfly. Go there or be square!

Saturday October 31

Location: Soho, NYC
Event: 36th Annual Village Halloween Parade
Show time: 7 PM
Venue: Sixth Avenue
Food: Souen
Drink: Ear Inn
Miscellaneous: Alidoro

New York does Halloween right. You can’t deny it and we block off 6th Avenue to prove it. At the 36th Annual Village Halloween Parade see hundreds of puppets, 53 bands, dancers and artists along with thousands of New Yorkers dressed up in their scariest best costumes. Whether you live here or are a tourist, this is a must see for all. For fans of macrobiotics, tofu, seitan and even fish, Souen is great for healthy food that won’t have you feeling like you shouldn’t have ordered that. Try the Broiled Tofu Okabe, which sees thick slices of tofu, broiled and topped with a sesame and sake paste ($11). One of the oldest bars in the city, Ear Inn offers cheap pints in a timeless environment. Walk through the doors and it’s like you’re in the early 1900s, though the occasional ringing cell phone will bring you back to reality. Possibly one of the best sandwich shops in the city, Alidoro has 40 kinds of amazing Italian sandwiches, all named.

Sunday November 1

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 229px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SuhhUJwODYI/AAAAAAAAEM8/zBu8RZW9loM/s320/Reverend+Billy+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5397671152246984066" />Location: Union Square, NYC
Event: Reverend Billy & the Life After Shopping Gospel Choir Get Tickets Here
Show time: 1 PM
Venue: Highline Ballroom
Food GoGo Curry
Drink Stitch
Miscellaneous Leisure Time Bowl

A plitical statement in the form of preaching of the gospel, Reverend Billy & the Life After Shopping Gospel Choir try to educate their audiences on the evils of too much consumerism in our lives. Add on performance art, live music, theater and humour and you have one of the most addictive events to see in NYC in recent years. The owner of GoGo Curry is obsessed with the Yankees Hideki Matsui and his Jersey (55). The menu’s theme is baseball and katsu, a fried meat, chicken, or shrimp cutlet served in a curry sauce is the specialty here. Portion sizes are Walk (small), Single (Med.), Double (L), and Triple (XL) and are inexpensive. The mascot, a gorilla for some reason, is plastered everywhere, making this place even quirkier. In the heart of the garment district, Stitch, a cozy after-work bar/lounge, stocks a cocktail menu with a design theme. If you still have energy and are in the mood to bowl, check out Leisure Time Bowl. Located in the Port Authority, this place is stylish and fun.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/SLdDb9zxorI/AAAAAAAABBE/MnE8cnpOF9E/s400/post_shortlist.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5239730839196115634" />

EAT: Permanent Brunch

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_z6QNg8oZ7O8/StSfxmjCtsI/AAAAAAAAEEo/tFmRLcUmFR4/s400/Permanent+Brunch+pic.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392110328379258562" />Temporary Heaven

Permanent Brunch
95 First Avenue (Btwn 5th & 6th Sts.)
New York, NY 10009

Hours are:
Mon - Wed: 11:30 AM to 11:30 PM
Thurs. & Fri: 11:30 AM to 2 AM
Sat: 9:30 AM to 2 AM
Sun: 9:30 AM to 11:30 PM

You ever get that craving for waffles for dinner and think- naw, that’s crazy. You can’t eat waffles for dinner. I mean, you’re a grown up and you can do what you darn well please, but wouldn’t a salad be so much more sensible?

Reasoning be damned, I had the best Pan-Roasted Chicken & Waffle ($14) last night and a slammin’ pile of bacon to boot, all thanks to freshly opened and highly touted Permanent Brunch.

I really can’t say enough about the unique, gourmet takes on brunch classics like the afore mentioned Chicken & Waffle, which is a perfectly cooked, succulent half of a hen with red wine mushrooms and a savory- not sweet- wedge of waffle to soak up the juice.

If that doesn’t sound like sex in your mouth, take it from me, it is- And you can have it for brunch, lunch or dinner.

To top it all off, PB’s menu sports a delicious list of Artisanal Bacon ($3)- the highlight of which is the Hungarian Smoked Kolozsvari from Illinois. But to each his own and you should certainly taste them all to see which is yours.

From a fun and funky staff to creatively designed drinks to the perfectly poached egg- Permanent Brunch makes it easy to skip sensibility and the Sunday morning wait.

Chicken and Waffle runs $14, as do the majority of their decadent entrees.
