Paris - The Last of Marilyn Monroe
La Monroe shines an exhibition that gathers the pictures of the two last photosessions of her life:

The 59 exceptional photos in this exhibit capture Marilyn Monroe soon before her death in 1962, aged 36. The photographer, Bert Stern, staged two long shoots on assignment for Vogue magazine. The first shoot, at the Bel-Air Hotel, yielded a series of remarkably sensual nudes, but the magazine decided they were inappropriate and so ordered another session with the bombshell. Amsterdam - Gnarls Barkley live in Amsterdam MONDAY NIGHT!

Madrid - Klimt's Eye for Women
LAST DAYS! Running through Sep 3 is a collection of Klimt drawings of women. Oslo - All Ibsen all the Time
Ibsen plays storm the capital's stages with 17 productions and 12 guest performances. Most of these will be accessible to non Norwegian speakers:

While some of the performances are in the original language and performed by Norwegian companies, most of them are staged by visiting companies, based on translations of Ibsen into other languages. The non-English performances are either subtitled or simultaneously translated by competent translators, so for once language is really not a barrier to appreciating good performances (via What's on When)

Copenhagen - Mesopotamien sounds at Images of the Middle East Festival

After the debacle of the Cartoon Affair, Danes are busy rebuilding their (self) image as open minded and curious about other cultures. This August the city opens its doors and numerous venues to music, dance and literature from the Middle East.

In the hands of Iraqi virtuoso Anwar Abudragh, traditional Middle-Eastern instruments like the oud, daf and dumbak revitalise the poetry of the region for a modern audience.

Barcelona - A pianist at large: Carles Santos at the Fundacio Miro
From Time Out:

An overview of 40-year career of Carles Santos, Catalan pianist, playwright, and all round provocateur. Santos was highly influenced by those avant-garde artists and musicians, such as John Cage, that he discovered on a stint in the States at the end of the sixties, and many of their ideas have formed starting points for his work right up until the present day. This exhibition includes some video works, props he designed for theatrical shows, and his music. If you're lucky, you'll find Santos himself tinkling the ivories in the museum galleries.

Copenhagen - Summer Dance Evenings at Police Headquarters
An evening of dance at Copenhagen's Police headquarters? Not as bizarre as it sounds. Tim Rushton, a British choreographer who set roots in Denmark and has since dominated the dance scene with his Dansk Dans Teater. Among his goals was to make dance less elitist and offer a taste of it to the Danish masses. His dream has come true and every year DDT stages Summer Dance in open air locations. As far as police stations go, this one is certainly not run of the mill; it boasts an unusual inner courtyard that is worth a visit with or without dance (see photo above).

Paris - Artsy Tabloid Photos
The Musée Jacquemart-André is hosting an Artistes & stars par les photographes de Paris-Match, an exhibition of artist portraits taken straight from the archive of infamous French Tabloid Paris Match. The pictures are billed as "astonishing" and feature a plethora of stars, French and other:

Milano - Duomo by Night

Tourists can enjoy a dusk view of Milan's pollution engulfed sprawl thanks to extended summer opening hours of the Duomo’s rooftop. London - Masturbathon?

London will be hosting the UK's first "masturbate-a-thon" next month in which hundreds of men and women are expected to pleasure themselves for charity. The setting in Clerkenwell Road, London will feature soft lighting, softer furnishings, relaxing music and solo booths. The sponsored event takes place on August 5 and will raise money for the Terrence Higgins Trust and sexual and reproductive health agency Marie Stopes International.

Amsterdam - Fashion stages Laundry Days
If you are looking for an offbeat alternative to more traditional fashion extravaganzas (read Paris, Milan), try the Amsterdam International Fashion Week. The prospectus reads a bit like something spawned by a tourist board, and the whole event probably is the brainchild of one, but the photos of past events posted on Flickr look promising and the organizers promise to mix commerce with creativity. Alongside our catwalk show schedule our programme includes fashion events, lectures, exhibitions, retail initiatives and parties.

The Musée du Quai Branly is now open for criticism. It's definitely summer! This week's events is a list of top festivals across Europe:

Copenhagen - Jazz Festival and Summer are back!
Best time of the year to be in Copenhagen; the likelihood of sun & reasonable temperatures is higher than usual and if the weather plays along, you can expect the sunshine to last until late at night, when you emerge from one of the many venues that host the north's biggest jazz festival:

This year's festival program presents several American Jazz icons such as Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves, Pat Metheny, Chris Potter, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, John Scofield og Kenny Barron and many others. Furthermore there will be several concerts with African artists. One is the king of vocal from Mali - Salif Keita, another the father of afro beat - Tony Allen and also the singer and bassist Richard Bona will present us for the some of Africa´s best world music.

Several concerts are already sold out.

Barcelona - Another Festival hits the Catalan Capital
Barcelona seems to have festivals going at the rate of one every week. The BCN Festival is a concoction of music, dance and theatre with some of its highlights including the very popular Dies de Danza and writer Alessandro Baricco's retelling of the Iliad.

London - Theo Jansen Gives a Talk
The Dutch artist famous for creating new "life forms" such as his crawling beach animals, is coming to London's Institute of Contemporary Art to chat about his creatures.

Theo Jansen is one of the most extraordinary artists you will ever meet. He studied science at the University of Delft Holland, before becoming an artist and for the last ten years he’s been making a new kind of animal: his Strandbeest are skeletons that walk on the wind. Eventually he wants to put these animals out in herds on the beaches, so they can live their own lives. Jansen will talk about his current exhibition at the ICA. Jansen’s recent lecture at Ars Electronica received a unanimous standing ovation – this talk is not to be missed.

Milano - Miyazaki Retrospective
If you haven't seen Miyazaki's masterpieces yet, this is not to be missed: Milan is putting on 8 movies of the Japanese animation master, including the incredible Chihiro (ran this Sunday, but catch his earlier films the rest of the week). The show will run at Milan's cinematheque and include live concerts of the various film scores. Milan is heating up, so spending a few evenings in a cool movie theatre may just be the right thing.

Athens - Hellenic Festival takes off
This event doesn't even need great programming - the setting beats everything: Athen's nearly 2000 year old amphitheatre Odeon of Herodes Atticus, nestled at the foot of the Acropopolis. It doesn't get better than this, or maybe it does: this year the theatre will host performances by Tanztheater Wuppertal / Pina Bausch, singers Diana Krall and Liza Minnelli, and Philip Glass' La Belle et La Bete.

Zurich - Culture Feast at the Zurich Festival
Music, ballet, theatre, dance, it's the usual big mix of culture rolled into weeks of performances across urban stages. This year the highlights range from Shostakovitch and Mozart concerts to a production of Woyzeck. A special treat includes famed choregrapher Heinz Spoerli's take on Bronislava Nijinsky's (Nijinsky's sister) Les Noces.

Milano - Watch Capote under starry summer sky

Paris - Fête de la Musique

From medieval music to gospels to military marches at the Ecole Militaire and hip hop; all musical styles are en vogue for the big Music Fiesta of the summer. A lot of upcoming talent, but also hopeless crooners, belt out their individual best on local squares, bars and cafes. Legend Cesaria Evora lends grandeur to the proceedings with a performance at the Bastille.

London - Anthony and Cleopatra at the Globe

Luxury Traveler sheds light on the upcoming production of the tragic love story at London's historic Globe theatre:

Following acclaimed productions of Coriolanus and Titus Andronicus, The Edges of Rome theatre season at Shakespeare's Globe continues with Antony & Cleopatra directed by Dominic Dromgoole. (....) Shakespeare's great tragic figure, Cleopatra, will be played by Frances Barber - an actress herself famed for "infinite variety". Nicholas Jones will play Antony whose recent theatre work includes Polonius in Hamlet at the Old Vic (2004). London - Documentary on Film Director Derek Jarman: Life as art.

Another London tip this week, iconoclastic director Derek Jarman gets the post-humous docu treatment. From the website:

Director Andy Kimpton-Nye eschews an exhaustive analysis of Jarman’s life and oeuvre (which could never fit into sixty minutes, anyway) to proffer a breezy survey of the director’s childhood and a joyful appreciation of his career. In lieu of Jarman’s own words, we are treated to the witty and insightful reminiscences of collaborators including actors Tilda Swinton and Nigel Terry and producer James MacKay.

Madrid - pioneer Picasso show at the Prado

A unique exhibition and the first of its kind:

The exhibit marks the 25th anniversary of the return of Pablo Picasso’s famous Guernica painting (pictured) to Spain from New York’s MOMA, an event that signified the country’s triumph over political unrest. Although Picasso completed the painting in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, he lent it to the New York museum with the understanding that it would be sent home to Spain when citizens were given democratic rights.
The show features over 100 Picasso works spanning all stages of his career, as well as major works from other artists working at the same time period as Picasso. The Museo del Prado showcases the bulk of the work done by other artists, while the Reina Sofia places more emphasis on Guernica and its legacy. Many of the paintings are on loan from other museums. London - Nixon in China plays at London Coliseum
The English National Opera is staging Peter Sellars' production of the John Adams opera Nixon in China. The first revival sees the return of music director Paul Daniel as conductor, James Maddalena as Richard Nixon, and Janis Kelly as Pat Nixon. The rest of the cast include newcomers Mark Stone as Chou-en-lai, Roland Wood as Henry Kissinger and Adrian Thompson as Mao Tse-tung. Basel – International Art Lovers flock to Art Basel Fair
The New York Times calls Art Basel "the Olympics of the Art World": 300 leading art galleries from 30 countries will present 20th and 21st century art works from over 2000 artists. The show includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs and editions as well as video and digital art, and promises to cover "the full spectrum of modern and contemporary art: from the great masters of modern art to the latest generation of artists."
