BREAKING: At least 51 fatalities reported from tornadoes in Oklahoma, medical examiner says :

At Plaza Towers Elementary School, the tornado tore the roof off, and authorities kept hysterical parents back because it was too loud to hear screams for help. A teacher told NBC affiliate KFOR that she draped herself on top of six children in a bathroom to shelter them.

It was not clear how many children were trapped. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade were evacuated to a church, but students in lower grades had sheltered in place, KFOR reported. More than two hours after the tornado struck, several children were pulled out alive.

Moore, Oklahoma is a target for tornadoes. As Buzzfeed notes, it’s the fourth to hit the city since 1999. The tornado in 1999, which caused $1.1 billion in damage, was the third-costliest in U.S. history; 36 people died in that tornado.

Buying Tumblr is a big enough deal for Yahoo that they clearly aren’t intending to ruin it or shut it down — like YouTube and Google, Tumblr will probably become an extremely important part of Yahoo indefinitely. And I believe they’ll do a good job with it. Yahoo today is a very different company than the Yahoo that neglected Flickr for years — it has extremely competent new leadership making bold changes. (Including fixing Flickr.)

More importantly, it gives David, and the rest of Tumblr’s team, the freedom to continue making the best product they can while offloading a lot of the grunt work to Yahoo’s leadership, staff, and infrastructure.

As for me, while I wasn’t a “founder” financially, David was generous with my employee stock options back in the day. I won’t make yacht-and-helicopter money from the acquisition, and I won’t be switching to dedicated day and night iPhones. But as long as I manage investments properly and don’t spend recklessly, Tumblr has given my family a strong safety net and given me the freedom to work on whatever I want. And that’s exactly what I plan to do.

Side note: If you haven’t seen it yet, the new Flickr redesign is ace.

The Justice Department (DOJ) seized the personal emails of Fox News chief Washington correspondent James Rosen and used other surveillance methods to investigate whether he was complicit in a leak of classified information, TheWashington Post reported Monday.

According to the report, the DOJ also examined Rosen’s phone records and tracked his visits to the State Department using security-badge data during the 2009 probe.

Looks like it’s going to be another great week in White House PR…

Syrian troops, Hezbollah fighters press attacks near Lebanese border:

Syrian troops backed by fighters from the Lebanese Hezbollah movement pressed an offensive Monday to retake the strategic border town of Qusair amid reports of heavy casualties on both sides.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 90 people have been killed since forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad launched their attack on the rebel stronghold overnight Saturday. Among them were 23 members of Hezbollah, an armed Shiite militant group whose fighters have been playing an increasingly visible role in the battles underway in the area in recent weeks.

There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah, which has portrayed its involvement in the fighting around Qusair as an effort to defend Shiites living in a string of villages along the border. But there were reports that a number of funerals were being held in northern Lebanese villages for fighters killed in the offensive.

The town of Qusair, which has been under rebel control for more than a year, is apparently home to two competing weapon supply lines, and carries a great deal of strategic significant in the ongoing Syrian civil war. Recapturing the town would also be a major morale boost for those loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and cut rebel forces off from one of their most important supply lines.

White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler will likely come under quite a bit of fire this week, thanks to a new Wall Street Journal report which claims she knew about the IRS audit scandal weeks before the media. Some have questioned President Obama’s competency as POTUS, after he claimed to find out about the scandal along with the public on May 10, though it seems Ruemmler indeed may not have informed the President about the issues after she was briefed on them by Treasury Department attorneys. 400-600 posts per hour are typically imported from Tumblr to new Wordpress blogs, according to founder Matt Mullenweg, prior to the company’s recently announced acquisition by Yahoo.
72,000 posts per hour have been imported since news of the buyout first broke, though that’s hardly a number for Yahoo/Tumblr execs to worry about, given the site’s 75 million post per day average. source

Definitely an interesting read, covering everything from Amash’s views on Syria (his mother immigrated from Syria) to his thoughts on Ayn Rand’s ironically emotional appeal.

Amash is an interesting figure in Congress and definitely worth keeping an eye on for a number of reasons, including his young age, his political stances, and his willingness to tell constituents why he votes the way he does on every single bill on his Facebook page. While his libertarian political views may not be everyone’s cup of tea, we need more people like him in Congress.

I’m joking around about Tumblr and Yahoo a lot right now, but that’s because making people laugh is my favorite thing. For those who care to hear it, I’ll be clear: let’s give ‘em a chance.

Yahoo lost its way a while ago, but Marissa Mayer has done some good stuff to right the ship in the 10 (yep, only 10) months she’s been there. Yahoo stated that Tumblr will be run as an independent company anyway, so we probably won’t see much “oh no everything’s purple and I have to dust off my Yahoo account” change. The change we do see could very well be great, considering Tumblr’s independence and Yahoo’s crazy resources.

Change isn’t inherently bad, but fearing it is. I’m eager to see where this goes.

Before touching on how awesome this is, let me try to allay any concerns: We’re not turning purple. Our headquarters isn’t moving. Our team isn’t changing. Our roadmap isn’t changing. And our mission – to empower creators to make their best work and get it in front of the audience they deserve – certainly isn’t changing.

So what’s new? Simply, Tumblr gets better faster. The work ahead of us remains the same – and we still have a long way to go! – but with more resources to draw from.
