I'll be in sunny Florida for the next seven days. Have a great week!

I love all things Japan, but somehow I never made it over to the Japan Society until very recently. The interior is lovely complete with a soothing Japanese style garden in the lobby. I went to check out the Fibers Future exhibit in their gallery space, and it was definitely worth the trip. Photography was not allowed, but these are some shots from the Japan Society website.

Unfortunately I caught the last weekend of the fibers exhibit, and it is no longer open, but the video below features a lot of the pieces and gives a good sense of the space. Enjoy!

There is also a Deco Japan exhibit coming in March that looks intriguing. If you've got most of the major NYC museums covered, I suggest adding the Japan Society to your list (also free Friday nights!).
String art or pin and thread art may evoke images of 1960's psychedelic-style geometrics, but recently I've noticed a modern resurfacing of the technique in various forms of imaginative typography. Above pieces by Debbie Smyth.
Even the folks at the Gap picked up on the trend. They incorporated the technique into their holiday marketing campaign, including in store installations (they're still up right now around Manhattan. Go check them out!)

I'm definitely inspired.

Here's to good things in 2012....

I'm a planner. I can't remember a year without a physical planner since middle school. I attempted to give it up and join the digital world when I first got my iphone last year, but I totally reverted back. I get a strange sense of satisfaction turning the page and seeing my week on paper. Or skimming back over the past month. Or jotting down something I'm really looking forward to...

Every year I search for the perfect solution. My planner is something I take with me everywhere, so it needs to be compact, sturdy, and of course aesthetically pleasing. For 2012, I discovered this so-called "Perfect Mini Planner" by Korean stationery company, Millimeter Milligram. It is available in the US from Poketo (I went for the lemon/pink diagonal split). How about you? Do you use a paper or digital planner?

Wishing everyone the best in the coming year. I'm looking forward to putting on a party dress and ringing in the new year with some of my most favorite people... Adieu 2011, Bienvenue 2012. xoxoxo.

Happy Chaunkah!

I promise a Chanukah post soon to make up for two Christmas ones in a row, but how cool is this painted driftwood tree, inspired by the work of Ginette Lapalme?
Despite not celebrating Christmas personally, one thing I look forward to every holiday season is the influx of handmade, craft, and independent design markets. I'm hoping to hit up a handful this weekend, including the Bust Craftacular, 3rd Ward Handmade Holiday, and the Holiday Craft Sale at Divine Studio. See you there?
Patterned elevator banks and a mirrored carousel...

Headgear that literally turns the world upside down...

A larger than life mushroom patch...

And a twisty slide that cuts through two floors!

My favorite redhead and I spent a super fun afternoon at the Carsten Höller exhibit at the New Museum. Words of caution: be prepared to wait in lines. Be prepared to get silly. Be prepared to accidentally sneak a peak of a naked museum-goer as they exit the Giant Psycho Tank...

Have you seen Urbanized, the most recent and final edition to Gary Hustwit's triology of design documentaries? As a tried and true city girl, I was excited to see Hustwit's showcase of urban design and was fortunate to see the NYC premiere including a Q&A with the director and Amanda Burden, director of the New York City Department of City Planning. Most interesting to me was when Ms. Burden was asked her top priority for change. She answered without hesitation "opening up the New York City waterfronts." If you've been to Brooklyn Bridge Park recently you can already see her work coming to fruition. The Dumbo/Brooklyn Heights waterfront is one of my favorite spots in all 5 boroughs, and I'm hearing similar things are happening along the West side of Manhattan...

If you're in New York, you can hear Gary Hustwit speak at an upcoming AIGA event on December 8th. And if you've seen all 3 films I'd love to hear which is your favorite (mine is still Helvetica).

Backdrop Perfection

I don't know why these stripes are outside the Dekalb Market, but I should be the last person to question the need for colorful stripes anywhere. What a joyful setting for this anniversary shoot...

Those of you who have been following my blog since day 1 (literally) may remember that two years ago my family and I took a trip to Poland to film a documentary about my grandparent's experiences during the Holocaust. You can read my very first blog post for my reactions following the trip here.

Well, I'm over the moon proud to announce that our little film, "We Are Still Here," has been selected to screen as part of the Big Apple Film Festival here in New York! It will be shown on Wednesday, November 2nd at 9:30pm at Tribeca Cinemas (together with another film titled "From The Ground Up").

So, come see my face on the big screen! I just realized tomorrow (October 23rd) is the last day to purchase advance tickets online, available here (PROGRAM 11). After tomorrow, tickets will be available at the door starting one hour before showtime.

My talented brother, Evan, is the heart and soul of this project...organizer, producer, editor, etc. etc. I worked with Evan in the later stages of editing, which earned me the lofty title of "story producer." I also worked on the graphics including the DVD packaging above (adapted from a series of linoleum block prints I made in college).

You can preview an introduction to the film here and feel free to contact me for more information.

Stripes + Pink

Litvack Shoes

Exciting news! My Uncle Jay launched a line of shoes! And I designed the logo! And they are now on sale at Bloomingdales! I saw the entire Fall line on my aunt and uncle's dining room table, and I can personally attest to its quality and good looks. Below are my favorites...

Check out the whole line on their newly launched site, and go buy some!! (see local store listings here). PS-that's my "not so little" cousin, Samantha, modeling her dad's shoes... Congrats Uncle Jay & Aunt Lil... so proud! xoxo.

Kate Kosek

I've had one of Kate Kosek's drawings on my desktop for awhile. She was due for a post anyway, but when I discovered her line of iphone cases on Society6, she shot right up to the top of my list. I'll take any of these, please. Nice work, Kate.

Manhole Covers, Vol. 2

My co-worker told me about this manhole cover tour of 14th st. since he remembered my fascination from our trip to Hong Kong. Unfortunately my reflexes were not fast enough, and all the tours are now full. I may have to head down to 14th st. on my own and see what I discover... in the meantime, I thought it was a good time to share some recent additions to my growing collection...
Commissioned by The New York Times Style Magazine for the cover of their Fall 2011 Travel issue, garden designer Judy Kameon recreated the iconic T logo using 130 different plants! It was then gorgeously photographed by her husband, Erik Otsea. That's what I call a dynamic duo.
Mallory is a posting ninja. I don't know how she pulls together such organized and elaborate posts on a daily basis, but someone how she does. And they are always just lovely, of course! She has devoted the whole of this week to the topic of FOOD. Good choice, eh? Several cool bloggers are sharing their tips for good eats and dream menus, including me! Stay tuned the rest of the week... Thanks for having me, Mallory!

Happy Autumn
