Andy Dangler and George Casey, United States Army Corps of Engineers, along with Steve Swenson and Mike Clark, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will discuss preferred methods of shoreline protection and the joint permitting process. The information will benefit both lakeside residents who would like to address their shoreline issues and private contractors who typically perform this type of work. The WQCC meeting, which begins at 1 p.m. in Classroom A on Wednesday, August 31, will be hosted by the Otsego County Planning Department at The Meadows Office Building, 140 County Highway 33W, approximately five miles south of Cooperstown. This event is free and open to the public; pre-registration is required by Monday, August 29. Those interested in attending should e-mail OCCA Acting Executive Director Darla M. Youngs at admin@occainfo.org or call (607) 547-4488. This event is made possible thanks to the Otsego County WQCC which, in order to better satisfy the educational component of its mission, has restructured its monthly meetings to include public information sessions. The OCWQCC was established in 1992 as a sub-committee of the Otsego County Soil and Water Conservation District. It is comprised of a diverse group of people representing state and local government agencies, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and lake associations. These members have technical expertise and knowledge and are committed to working to improve and maintain the quality of water in Otsego County through the reduction of nonpoint source pollution within its boundaries. For more information on the WQCC, visit www.otsegosoilandwater.com/waterqualitycc.html. OCCA is a WQCC member organization.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY COLLECTION: Pharmaceuticals, paint, chemicals, propane tanks and car batteries are only a few of the things that are being collected at the 14th annual Otsego County Household Hazardous Waste Day Collection, to be held on Saturday, September 17. The collection site is at The Meadows Office Building on County Route 33W next to the Otsego County Jail. More information and registration will be available by calling 607-547-4228 after September 1st. Volunteers are needed to help recycle latex paint for reuse and to unload vehicles. Please call Martha Clarvoe, Otsego County Conservation Association (OCCA) special projects manager, at (607)547-4020 or e-mail martha.clarvoe@gmail.com. With regard to water use and withdrawal project rule changes approved on June 23, OCCA asked that the SRBC further consider the possible risks posed by unconventional gas drilling and related development to clean water, aquatic life, and human health before adopting the proposed changes to 18 CFR Part 806. In a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joseph Martens, OCCA has asked that DEC ensure a transparent and accessible public comment period on the dSGEIS, with ample time and opportunity for the public to weigh in on this important document.

HELP SOUGHT FOR FINAL WATER CHESTNUT ERADICATION OUTINGS OF THE SEASON: For the past five years, the Otsego County Conservation Association and Goodyear Lake Association have been vigorously battling an invasive plant, the water chestnut, as it spreads throughout the northern part of Goodyear Lake. It has been estimated that without this initiative, the northern portion of the lake (the stump lot) would be completely covered by water chestnut in less than five years. This season, OCCA and GLA have one two day hand-harvesting session remaining on September 16-17 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone interested in volunteering for this effort should call and leave contact information with Bruce Shultis of the Goodyear Lake Association, 432-8698, or with OCCA, 547-4488. Volunteers will meet at the Route 28 pull-off in Portlandville, just south of Canoe & Kayak Rentals and Sales, at the appointed time each day. Gloves are suggested and canoes and johnboats are available. Those in need of a boat are asked to call to register so that appropriate arrangements can be made. Lake area residents who would prefer to boat over to the stump lot are encouraged to do so.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AVAILABLE THROUGH OCCA AND SWCD: The Otsego County Soil and Water Conservation District has asked the Otsego County Conservation Association for assistance in recruiting interns to assist in twice monthly monitoring of 50 streams within the county. This is a volunteer position without compensation, but credit hours will be accrued as allowable. Training will be provided. Job duties include: To act alone, or as part of a team, to visit 50 sites throughout Otsego County and directly measure and record (electronically and by hand) conductivity, pH, temperature, total dissolved solids and time/date data. Data will be collected with a YSI Professional Series probe (to be kept at the SWCD office). The selected individual(s) will be responsible for proper calibration of the unit prior to use as per the manufacturer’s instructions. The selected individual(s) will be responsible for regular downloading of data and assist in its compilation and analysis. Total time required to collect all data is approximately two, eight hours days. The selected individual(s) will visit all sites within a 12-15 day interval. The selected individual(s) will be trained by SWCD staff and will follow the prescribed protocols for collection and safety. The selected individual(s) will hold a valid and clean New York State drivers license and be subject to the vehicle usage & responsibility portions of the District Personnel Policy. The selected individual(s) will be representing the District, and will be expected to present and comport themselves in a professional manner. For further details, e-mail Darla M. Youngs at admin@occainfo.org

OCCA VICE-PRESIDENT TO BE HONORED AT SRBC MEETING NEXT MONTH: On Thursday, September 15 at 8:30 a.m., the Susquehanna River Basin Commission will hold a meeting and public hearing at Country Inn & Suites Cooperstown, 4470 State Highway 28, Milford. In addition to the public hearing, its related action items, and other presentations, Dr. Willard N. Harman will receive the Maurice K. The coins, which are legal tender but produced in limited quantity, will become available in 2014 – marking the 75th anniversary of the June 12, 1939 opening of the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

“The National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act unites every fan of the game in celebrating the timelessness of America's pastime,” said Jeff Idelson, President, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. “As the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2014, the Coin Act will connect every generation in commemorating the impact Cooperstown has had on the national landscape, honoring our baseball heroes while educating future generations on the historical significance of the game and its lore.

“We are thankful to the House for acknowledging the impact of our institutional mission across generations. Thank you to Rep. Hanna for introducing a bill that will allow every fan to join the milestone anniversary and help support future educational outreach for an American shrine.”

Congressman Hanna noted, “Baseball is the quintessential American pastime with roots in Upstate New York. As a past 10-year resident of Cooperstown, it is a privilege for me to facilitate this long-overdue honor for the baseball community throughout the world. This cost-free legislation with overwhelmingly bipartisan support proves that the love of baseball – our national pastime – is a common bond.”

The bill is co-sponsored by Congressmen Joe Barton of Texas and Michael Doyle of Pennsylvania, managers of the Republican and Democrat Congressional Baseball Teams, respectively. Showing bi-partisan support for America’s National Pastime, more than 290 members of Congress signed on to the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act. The bill is expected to be considered by the House of Representatives before the August recess.

Congressman Barton observed, “I grew up playing baseball and dreaming of playing in the Major Leagues – maybe even making it to the Hall of Fame. But instead of being elected to the Hall, I was elected to Congress. Instead of striking out big leaguers, I struck out my colleagues as a pitcher in the Congressional Baseball Game.

“Baseball has a special place in America and I am happy to be an original co-sponsor of the Hall of Fame Coin. I support the Hall’s mission to preserve the special moments of our national pastime and can’t think of a better way to commemorate the Hall of Fame’s 75th Anniversary,” Congressman Doyle stated, “Baseball is a great part of America’s history and tradition. It’s a sport that millions of Americans enjoy both watching and playing.

“The Baseball Hall of Fame does a fantastic job of preserving the sport’s history, recognizing the best Major League players of all time, and educating and inspiring new generations about the game.As manager of the Democratic Congressional Baseball Team and a life-long fan of baseball, I’m honored to be one of the cosponsors of this bill to recognize and raise public awareness about the Baseball Hall of Fame.”

Congress may enact only two Commemorative Coin Acts per year, authorizing the production of coins that celebrate and honor American people, places, events and institutions. As well as commemorating important aspects of American history and culture, these coins help raise money for important causes. Part of the price of these coins is a surcharge that goes to organizations and projects that benefit the community.

Since the modern commemorative coin program began in 1982, the United States Mint has raised over $418,000,000 in surcharges to help build new museums, maintain national monuments like the Vietnam War Memorial, preserve historical sites like George Washington's home, support various Olympic programs, and much more.

“Baseball remains the lifeblood of our great nation, with the game regenerating legends with every passing year,” said Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, who will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at Thursday night’s Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Stadium in Washington, D.C. “It is an honor to be associated with this important legislation, and both parties should be commended for honoring Cooperstown and the preservation of baseball history for 75 years.”

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is an independent not-for-profit educational institution, dedicated to fostering an appreciation of the historical development of baseball and its impact on our culture by collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting its collections for a global audience as well as honoring those who have made outstanding contributions to our National Pastime.

The Museum's collections contain more than 38,000 three-dimensional artifacts representing all facets of the game, from its inception in the mid-19th century to present. Three-dimensional artifacts include bats, baseballs, uniforms, player equipment, ballpark artifacts, awards, artwork, textiles, tickets, collectibles and assorted memorabilia. In addition, the Institution’s archives contain in excess of 135,000 baseball cards and three million Library items, including photographs, books, magazines, newspaper clippings, films, video and audio tapes.

Located on Main Street in the heart of picturesque Cooperstown, New York, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is one of the country’s major tourist destinations and is surely the best-known sports shrine in the world. Opening its doors for the first time on June 12, 1939, the Hall of Fame has stood as the definitive repository of the game’s treasures and as a symbol of the most profound individual honor bestowed on an athlete. It is every fan’s "Field of Dreams," with its stories, legends and magic to be passed on from generation to generation.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is open seven days a week year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

ECO-BULLETIN FROM OTSEGO COUNTY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

July 1, 2011: Vol. 4, No. 14

Eco-bulletin headlines this issue:

LAKE CHALLENGE DINNER HONORING THE HAGERS IS NEXT FRIDAY

TEDESCO, DEROSA LEAD LORDSLAND HIKE TOMORROW

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WATER CHESTNUT HAND-HARVESTING

LAKE CHALLENGE DINNER HONORING THE HAGERS IS NEXT FRIDAY: On Friday, July 8, the Otsego County Conservation Association will host a dinner honoring Susanna and Lou Hager at The Otesaga Resort Hotel, Cooperstown. This event recognizes the important role played by the Hagers as co-chairs of OCCA’s successful Otsego Lake Challenge Campaign and as long-time stewards of Otsego Lake. If you are planning to attend and/or donate toward lake programming but have not returned your reply card, please do so as soon as possible. Thanks to the Susanna and Lou Hager Matching Challenge Grant, the Hagers were integral in the success of the Lake Challenge. Since 2008, Lake Challenge funds have supported more than $300,000 in major Otsego Lake and Upper Susquehanna Watershed initiatives, including the septic system management plan, zebra mussel control, boat inspections, interns for lake research, riparian buffers, walleye stocking to control the invasive alewife, barnyard water management projects, lake monitoring, and public education. Dinner proceeds will help ensure the continuation of these efforts, which are essential to water quality protection, in 2012 and beyond.

TEDESCO, DEROSA LEAD LORDSLAND HIKE TOMORROW: On Saturday, July 2 at 10 a.m., botanist Connie Tedesco and former OCCA Board member Richard deRosa will lead a hike at The Nature Conservancy’s Lordsland Preserve, located near Roseboom. This mildly strenuous hike will take 1-2 hours, crossing through some of the preserve’s woodlands. Ferns and unusual wetland plants will be identified along the way. Participants should meet at the parking area on Doc Ahlers Road – for more information, call 547-4488. Since 2001, OCCA has organized and/or co-sponsored nature walks on local trails. Other confirmed dates, venues and hike leaders for 2011 are: July 9, Hooker Mountain State Forest, Terry Bliss; August 6, Milford State Forest, Dave Kiehm; August 13, Sleeping Lion Trail at Glimmerglass State Park, park staff; September 10, Betty and Wilbur Davis State Park, Joe Ritton; October 23, The Robert V. Riddell State Park, Trish and Steve Kent; and January 15, 2012, The Robert V. Riddell State Park, snowshoe hike with the Kents. For a complete hike schedule, details and directions, visit http://occainfo.org/documents/NatureWalksposter2011.pdf or e-mail admin@occainfo.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WATER CHESTNUT HAND-HARVESTING: For the past five years, the Otsego County Conservation Association and Goodyear Lake Association have been vigorously battling an invasive plant, the water chestnut, as it spreads throughout the northern part of Goodyear Lake. It has been estimated that without this initiative, the northern portion of the lake (the stump lot) would be completely covered by water chestnut in less than five years. This season, OCCA and GLA are organizing five hand-harvesting efforts: June 17-18, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; July 15-16, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; August 19-20, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and September 16-17, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone interested in volunteering for this effort should call and leave contact information with Bruce Shultis of the Goodyear Lake Association, 432-8698, or with Tavis Austin at OCCA, 547-4488.

OCCA needs your help to keep fighting the threats to our natural resources. Got a minute? Visit our website and look at everything else OCCA is doing – and please consider an online donation whenever you can.

ECO-BULLETIN FROM OTSEGO COUNTY CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION

May 3, 2011: Vol. 4, No. 8

EMPIRE HOUSE TO DONATE PARTIAL DRINK PROCEEDS TO “UP THE RIVER” FUNDRAISER: Nineteen dedicated OCCA supporters have been marooned for a good cause, each with the goal of raising $1,600 for new paddles to help them make it back to shore. Figuratively, that is. In an effort to raise funds toward countywide programs to protect and preserve the environment, OCCA Board members and volunteers have been “set adrift” in the middle of the Susquehanna. These Board members and volunteers are e-mailing friends, family members, and business colleagues in hopes of being “bailed out.”

On Thursday, May 5, The Empire House in Gilbertsville will generously donate $1.00 from every drink sold to the Otsego County Conservation Association’s “Up the River Without a Paddle” fundraiser. Empire House is located at 32 Marion Avenue, Gilbertsville. For information, call (607) 783-2859. Dinner Hours: Wed. & Thur. & Sun. 5-9pm, Fri. & Sat. 5-10pm. Bar hours: Wed. & Thur. & Sun. 5-11pm, Fri. & Sat. 5pm-2am.

All proceeds from the “Up the River” fundraiser are to be used to implement OCCA-sponsored programs and initiatives. For instance, $10 could pay for one riparian tree in a compromised watershed; $50 could harvest 25 pounds of invasive water chestnut; $75 could stock 50 walleye in Otsego Lake; and $350 could send a middle-school student to DEC Environmental Education Camp.
