Your dollar has lost 96-97 percent of its purchasing power since 1913. This is not bad luck or mysterious market forces. It is the result of deliberate policy choices that steadily, quietly drained your wealth—and convinced you it was being done for your benefit.

The World That Was Stolen

For over a hundred years after America’s founding—roughly 1774 to 1900—prices did not steadily rise. Net cumulative inflation over that entire century was close to zero. Prices often fell, not because of poverty or collapse, but because of human ingenuity: more efficient factories, labor-saving machines, railroads slashing transportation costs, etc. Each new invention meant goods cost less to make and less to buy. Economists call this “good deflation”—the natural, healthy fruit of a productive economy.

Your great-grandfather’s dollar actually gained purchasing power as the decades passed. Imagine working hard and watching the cost of food, clothing, and tools gradually fall—so the same paycheck stretched further every year without a raise. That was the American reality for over a century. Then it was taken. As argued by George Selgin in Less Than Zero, a falling price level in a growing economy is not dangerous, it is the expected and desirable result of increased productivity.

The Great Excuse

The Great Depression gave those in power the justification they needed. We now know—what Federal Reserve Chairs have effectively admitted—that the Depression was not an inevitable market catastrophe. It was caused, deepened, and extended by catastrophically-bad government decisions: destructive monetary policy, trade wars, and tax hikes in the middle of an economic collapse. Without those failures, economists widely believe it would have been a painful but short recession—remembered the way we remember the recession of 1920, which ended quickly because the government largely stayed out of the way.

Instead, the Depression became the defining economic trauma of the 20th century. And that trauma became a political tool. Policymakers saw the Depression’s “bad deflation”—caused by their own failures—and used it to declare that all deflation, forever, was the enemy. They lumped a century of prosperity-driven falling prices together with their self-made disaster, called it all dangerous, and declared that responsible policy meant prices must always rise. The Federal Reserve’s own statements from this era make this policy rationale explicit.

The Crime by the Numbers

American workers are 5–6 times more productive per hour than in 1913. That explosion in productivity should have dramatically increased your dollar’s purchasing power—goods should cost a fraction of what they do now. Instead, the exact opposite happened: You work harder, produce more, and your money buys less every single year. That gap—between what your productivity should have delivered and what inflation actually let you keep—is the precise measure of what was taken.

The Smoking Gun

Then there is Beardsley Ruml. He was Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a key advisor to President Roosevelt—one of the most powerful men in American finance at the exact moment these monetary changes were being locked in place. In the 1940s, he published an article stating plainly: given control of a central banking system and a currency not backed by gold, a sovereign government is finally free of money worries and need no longer levy taxes to fund its spending.

Read that carefully. A government with control of the money supply can create currency from nothing and spend whatever it wants, on whatever it wants, without asking your permission, without passing a tax bill, without ever having to tell you what it is costing you.

For most of American history, the government’s power to spend was chained to its power to tax. Taxing required legislation. Legislation required votes. Votes required facing the public and justifying every dollar. Inflation replaced that accountability entirely. Your wealth is now taken not by a vote in Congress but by the quiet, invisible erosion of every dollar you hold.

Ruml then went further. He proposed what we now call payroll withholding—as he explained in a 1943 radio interview—having employers quietly remove taxes from every paycheck before the money ever reaches your hands. The genius of the scheme, in the darkest sense, was that it solved the government’s collection problem while making the tax nearly invisible. Instead of one annual bill that forced people to sit down, do the math, and feel genuine rage at the total, you simply receive a slightly smaller paycheck every two weeks. The difference between what you earn and what you receive becomes background noise—expected, normal, something you stop thinking about after your first job.

What This Means Today

The costs of things you cannot live without have not merely kept pace with inflation—they have demolished it. Since the 1970s, housing costs have outpaced general inflation by 2-3 times. Medical costs have outpaced it by 3-5 times. College tuition has outpaced general inflation by 4-5 times since 1980. An entire generation has been effectively priced out of homeownership, one serious diagnosis away from bankruptcy, and entering the workforce not just broke but deeply indebted—their future earnings already pledged to lenders before they cashed their first paycheck.

In every one of these sectors—housing, healthcare, education—government involvement, subsidy, and money creation have driven costs skyward while making it nearly impossible for market competition to bring them back down.

Inflation is also the most regressive tax ever devised. It transfers wealth upward—from those who earn money to those who already own things. The working person holding dollars loses; the person holding real estate, stocks, and hard assets wins.

The productivity gains of American workers—your parents, your grandparents, you—should have made life steadily, measurably more affordable. Instead, those gains were quietly redirected. And citizen control over government spending—the most fundamental power in a democracy—was abolished without a single vote.

Beardsley Ruml told you exactly what was happening; he published it, he put his name on it. Nobody was supposed to be paying attention.

The ceasefire has so far had minimal impact on the movement of hundreds of vessels that have been stuck in the region since the start of the war in late February. United States President Donald Trump even said that “Iran is doing a very poor job” at reopening the vital waterway.

Oil Price Plunge After Iran Allows Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Trump described it as “dishonorable” as the Iranian ruling class continues to block the passage of vessels. Trump wrote in Truth Social. “That is not the agreement we have!”

As of Friday morning, only 7% of the normal traffic has been restored through the Stait. This prompted Trump to post:

“Iran is doing a very poor job, dishonorable some would say, of allowing Oil to go through the Strait of Hormuz. That is not the agreement we have!”

While Iran stalls on the reopening of the Strait, the U.S. declared that this was a vital condition for the ceasefire. Not only that, but Iran has already accused the U.S. of violating the agreement.

Iran Accused Israel and The U.S. Of Violating The Ceasefire

According to a report by KPBS, this casts further doubt on the endurance of the truce if continued Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon on Friday and attacks by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

High-level talks between the U.S. and Iran are slated to start on Saturday in Islamabad, with the mediation of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Pakistan’s government acted as an intermediary between Washington and Tehran to secure the two-week ceasefire.

The U.S. delegation will be led by Vice President Vance. Iran has yet to announce who will be its lead negotiator. –KPBS,

Vance Says Nuclear Weapons Are An Important Part Of America’s “Defense”

The ceasefire is not iron-tight, and should the U.S. continue to believe Iran isn’t fulfilling its obligation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, no one will be surprised when the bombs start dropping again.

This article was originally published by William L. Anderson at The Mises Institute.

If there is a mantra among progressive American political and media elites, it would be “our democracy,” usually preceded by what they believe to be a threat from the Right. For example, progressives deemed the recent reversal of Roe “a threat to our democracy” because it removed laws regulating abortion from Supreme Court jurisdiction and returned the issue to democratically elected legislatures.

It would seem inconsistent to invoke the democratic electoral process to deal with a contentious issue like abortion, but progressives are nothing if not inconsistent. But even in challenging logic on political issues, progressives at least try to stick to the language of democracy, and especially the language of “our democracy.”

However, occasionally progressive elites demonstrate their contempt for democracy because they realize that the democratic process is not going to have the desired progressive results, because voters and their representatives do not want to knowingly harm themselves.

Recently, the New York Times, in a progressive moment of truth, reacted to the US Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. EPA, in which the court ruled that because carbon dioxide is not among the pollutants regulated by the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the Environmental Protection Agency could not enforce CO2 emissions rules for electric power plants.

In its 6–3 ruling, the SCOTUS indicated that Congress was free to pass legislation to regulate carbon dioxide but that the EPA was not free to simply add it to its list of regulated power plant emissions on its own. In other words, the high court declared that democratically elected members of the US House and Senate are free to write (and pass) any anti–climate change legislation they choose. This is what the ancients once called democracy.

Not surprisingly, the NYT went ballistic, and in so doing exposed the progressive mentality, with its affinity for rule by “experts.” Declared the newspaper’s editorial board:

Thursday’s ruling also has consequences far beyond environmental regulation. It threatens the ability of federal agencies to issue rules of any kind, including the regulations that ensure the safety of food, medicines and other consumer products, that protect workers from injuries and that prevent financial panics.

The ruling did no such thing. Instead, the court said that federal regulatory agencies are not free to create and enforce rules outside of their statutory authority. The EPA had simply declared itself the official power plant CO2 emissions regulator under the Obama administration, despite the fact that Democrats had a supermajority in the US Senate and a huge majority in the House, and theoretically could have passed a law giving new regulatory powers to the EPA. That Congress did not do so is instructive.

In other words, this was an extralegal power grab but one approved by elites because, well, elites know more than everyone else. The NYT editorial continued:

In 1984, an earlier generation of conservative Supreme Court justices formalized a doctrine of deference to the judgment of regulatory agencies, modestly concluding that judges were neither experts nor elected officials, and therefore ought to leave such decisions in other hands. In Thursday’s decision, the court asserted that the policy of deference applies only to supposedly unimportant regulations. When it comes to “major questions” of regulatory policy, the court said, it would not hesitate to second-guess regulators—and to strike rules that it decided did not have a clear congressional warrant.

The decision amounts to a warning shot across the bow of the administrative state. The court’s current conservative majority, engaged in a counterrevolution against the norms of American society, is seeking to curtail the efforts of federal regulators to protect the public’s health and safety. The court already invoked a similar logic during the Covid pandemic to strike down workplace Covid testing requirements and a federal moratorium on evictions. And by refraining from defining a threshold for what constitutes a “major question,” the court is leaving a sword hanging over every new rule. (emphasis mine)

The “administrative state,” of course, is anything but democratic; it is autocratic to the core. For all of their professed love for democracy, progressives have long demanded rule by experts, or at least rule by “experts” that meet progressive approval. As I pointed out last year, when actual scientists studied the effects of so-called acid rain and concluded that it was not causing lake and river acidification, progressives in the media, as well as EPA administrators, immediately tried to destroy the careers of scientists failing to echo the party line. Not surprisingly, one of the loudest antiscience voices in the acid rain affair was the New York Times.

Furthermore, for all the “experts know best” rhetoric in the NYT editorial, there is no proof that the administrative state governs as effectively as democracy, which elites pretend to love. The “experts” at the Federal Reserve believed they could substitute trillions of printed dollars for actual production of goods without creating monetary chaos. In western forests, the “experts” at the US Forest Service have had fire suppression policies in place for more than a century, and the result has been that what were once mere forest fires have become destructive conflagrations that burn so hot that they often destroy the scorched soil’s ability to generate postfire growth.

The ”experts” at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention imposed policies that precipitated massive job losses, caused unnecessary premature death from ailments other than COVID-19, and still failed to promote adequate information about the virus and its origins. Education “experts” have created one educational crisis after another, and so on. Rule by experts—the administrative state—has caused destruction whenever it is invoked, yet the editors at the “newspaper of record” have failed to notice.

Instead, they proclaim eternal fealty to what can only be called a failed experiment in governance, not to mention that it is antidemocratic. Yet, the NYT editors cannot keep from claiming loyalty to both forms of governance, even when they contradict one another:

Congress has decided, and with good reason, that regulatory agencies staffed by experts are the best available mechanism for a representative democracy to make decisions in areas of technical complexity. The E.P.A. is the entity that Congress relies upon to figure out how clean the air should be, and how to get there. Asserting that it lacks the power to perform its basic responsibilities is simply sabotage.

There is much to dissect in those words, but suffice it to say that to assume that EPA decision makers have the kind of knowledge and expertise implied in that editorial is to foolishly demonstrate faith in something that inevitably fails. Far from being near-omniscient sages of science, the bureaucrats making life-altering decisions at the EPA are people who bear no costs if they impose unnecessary burdens on the lives of ordinary people but who also find that the more draconian their edicts, the greater the praise from environmental interest groups and, of course, the New York Times. What possibly could go wrong?

It is difficult to believe the pace at which global events are now moving. Apocalyptic threats are being thrown around recklessly, and severe damage is being done to the global economic system every single day.

A lot of people still seem to think that economic conditions will snap back to normal once the war ends, and that is because they don’t understand the level of destruction that has already taken place. Even if the war ends tomorrow and commercial traffic starts flowing freely through the Strait of Hormuz once again, the world won’t be getting nearly as much energy from the Middle East because dozens of oil and natural gas facilities have either been damaged or destroyed. That means that widespread rationing and global energy shortages are baked in, no matter what happens next.

According to the executive director of the IEA, 75 energy sites in the Persian Gulf region have been attacked, and approximately a third of those sites have experienced severe damage…

International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol was interviewed by the French newspaper Le Figaro earlier on Tuesday and warned that the Gulf energy shock “is more severe than those of 1973, 1979, and 2022 combined” because it is affecting oil, gas, food, fertilizers, petrochemicals, helium, and global trade all at once.

Birol said in the interview that more than 75 energy sites across the Gulf region have been attacked, with about a third severely damaged, suggesting tens of billions of dollars in repairs and a prolonged disruption of some energy flows, further tightening global supplies and compounding the disruption at the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint.

It is going to take years to rebuild the damage that has already been done by this war.

So what will things look like if this war stretches on for many more months?

Tankers that traveled through the Strait of Hormuz before the war began have still been arriving at their destinations.

But this month that is going to stop happening, and Birol is warning that we are entering a “black April”…

These countries are producing just over half of pre-war levels. As for natural gas, exports have stopped entirely. March was already difficult, but April will be worse. If the Strait remains closed throughout April, we will lose twice as much crude and refined products as in March. We are entering a “black April.” In the Northern Hemisphere, April usually marks spring—but now it may feel like the beginning of winter.

Even in a wildly optimistic scenario in which the war ends immediately, conditions will continue to deteriorate for quite some time to come.

Right now, Asia is being hit harder than anywhere else, because they are the most dependent on Middle East energy…

In South Korea, the president urged citizens to take shorter showers to save energy. Butter chicken has disappeared from some restaurant menus in India because it needs to simmer for a long time, which is a challenge when there’s a shortage of cooking gas. In the Philippines, the government asked officials to reduce electricity usage by taking the stairs instead of elevators.

We haven’t seen anything like this in decades.

Bangladesh is already experiencing widespread fuel shortages, and we are witnessing fights, robberies and panic-buying at gas stations all over the country…

In Bangladesh, the fuel shortages and panic have resulted in a spike in robberies, as people raid gas stations and fuel trucks in order to stockpile supplies.

Mohammad Najmul Haque, president of the Bangladesh Petrol Pump Owners Association, told the Washington Post that attacks are reported every day across the roughly 3,000 fuel stations in the country. The appearance of huge lines of people panic-buying fuel has contributed to a cycle of fear, leading others to do the same. Some gas station managers have been beaten—or even killed—Haque and Bangladeshi officials reported, over the fuel shortages.

Things will soon get even worse in nations all over Asia because the tankers are going to stop arriving this month.

Of course Europe is going to experience a tremendous amount of pain too.

Already, approximately 18 percent of all gas stations in France are “facing fuel supply shortages”…

Around 18% of French petrol stations are currently facing fuel supply shortages, the government said on Tuesday, while rising prices at the pump prompted some drivers in western France to block a road in a sign of rumbling discontent.

As the US-Israeli-led war on Iran ‌enters its sixth week, a supply crunch on oil deliveries has led to a surge in crude and fuel prices in many parts of the world.

Here in the United States, we don’t have to worry about any gasoline shortages at this stage.

But in many areas of the nation gasoline sure is getting quite expensive…

For Connie Lear, driving even her hybrid car is a luxury she can rarely afford.

Lear lives in the rural town of June Lake, California, a picturesque community of 300 people near Yosemite National Park and the Nevada state line.

June Lake is part of Mono County, which has the highest average gas price in the United States.

“My husband and I were watching the news this morning, and it came on about $4 gas and I said, ‘Well, where are you? Ours is $7.50!’” she said, citing the price at the only gas station in her town. The Mono County average was $6.72 as of Monday, according to AAA.

What are people going to do if the price of gasoline hits 10 dollars a gallon?

Of course if this war persists we could eventually be dealing with shortages too.

In fact, one industry insider is telling us that is exactly what is going to happen if “we continue on the path we are on now”…

“The longer this goes on, the scarier it is. Today we might not have a shortfall, but eventually we will,” said Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.

“If we continue on the path we are on now, we will run out of fuel,” he warned.

It appears that supplies of jet fuel are even tighter.

Thousands of flights are being canceled all over the world, and four airports in Italy just started “imposing restrictions on refueling due to a shortage of jet fuel”…

Europe’s airports have begun imposing restrictions on refueling due to a shortage of jet fuel, and airlines have preemptively canceled flights.

In Italy, four airports in Bologna, Milan, Treviso and Venice placed some restrictions on jet fuel through Thursday, according to an official notice, which says that “due to limited fuel availability from Air BP Italia, refueling services for operators contractually linked to Air BP Italia may be subject to restrictions.”

As I stated yesterday, if you need to fly somewhere, you should do it as soon as possible.

Supplies of jet fuel are only going to get tighter from here.

The same thing can be said about petrochemicals.

I wish that this were not true, but without sufficient supplies of petrochemicals, the global economy will not be able to function.

So the fact that major petrochemical facilities in the Middle East are being destroyed should deeply alarm all of us.

In Iran, two facilities that account for over 85 percent of Iranian petrochemical exports have been destroyed…

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the operation, stating that the strike on Assaluyeh marks the second major petrochemical complex targeted by Israel in Iran. He said that the two facilities together account for more than 85 percent of Iran’s petrochemical exports and are now no longer operational following the attacks.

Iranian media, including Fars News Agency and Mehr News Agency, reported multiple explosions in the South Pars Special Economic Energy Zone in Assaluyeh following the strikes. The reports indicated that the operation involved U.S. and Israeli fighter jets and that several key installations were hit, including the Jam and Damavand petrochemical plants.

In response, the Iranians hit the fourth biggest petrochemical manufacturer on the entire planet…

Iranian ballistic missiles struck Al-Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia

The target was the Middle East’s largest petrochemical company, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), the fourth largest petrochemical manufacturer in the world after DuPont, BASF and Sinopec

If you do not understand how things are made, you may not think that this is such a big deal.

But the truth is that almost everything that you buy either contains petrochemicals or is wrapped in packaging that is made from petrochemicals.

Goldman Sachs is warning that the petrochemical supply shock is “transmitting faster and at a greater magnitude than we had anticipated”…

Goldman analysts, led by Georgina Fraser, warned clients on Monday that the petrochemical shock is worsening across Asia, with textile and packaging plants emerging as the first major downstream casualties.

“The supply shock is transmitting faster and at a greater magnitude than we had anticipated,” Fraser emphasized in the note.

She said the supply shock is moving beyond higher energy prices into production cuts, margin compression, and early demand destruction, adding that “signals are materializing fastest, with textiles and packaging among the first downstream sectors affected.”

This is not a hypothetical scenario that may or may not happen someday.

This is an unprecedented global nightmare that is happening right now.

If you are a regular reader, you already know that I am extremely concerned about the worldwide shortage of fertilizer that has now erupted…

About a third of all fertilizer shipped globally goes through the Strait of Hormuz because Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iran are big global producers. Some plants in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan have stopped fertilizer production entirely because of a shortage of natural gas.

We can’t get the fertilizer that is trapped in the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

And we can’t get fertilizer plants all over the globe the natural gas from the Middle East that they need to operate.

Spring is planting season all over the northern hemisphere, and if nitrogen fertilizer is not applied within a certain window of time it won’t work.

Global food production is going to be way down in 2026.

The number of people facing acute hunger around the world was already at a record high before the war started, and now we are facing a scenario in which we could see widespread famine in many areas of the planet.

Even if the war ends tomorrow, it is going to take many years for the global economy to recover.

So what kind of crisis are we talking about if this war keeps raging for a long time to come?

Iran is accusing Israel of attacking Hezbollah even after the ceasefire was agreed upon. Iranian media outlets have reported that Tehran was suspending tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and was considering pulling out of the deal with Washington over Israel’s actions in Lebanon.

The United States has denied that the vital waterway has been closed again. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was aware of reports saying the strait had been closed, but said the reports “are false,” reported CBS News.

It isn’t just Israel, either. Iran has also accused the U.S. of violating multiple clauses of the deal framework.

According to a report by the Associated Press News (APNews), Israel’s attacks on Beirut resulted in the deadliest day in the country since the war began. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has insisted that an end to the war in Lebanon was part of the ceasefire deal, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump said it was not. Iran’s parliament speaker warned Thursday that continued Israeli attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon would bring “explicit costs and STRONG responses.”

Talks to seek a permanent end to the war could begin in Islamabad in the coming days.

Talks to seek a permanent end to the war could begin in Islamabad in the coming days. The White House confirmed that U.S. Vice President JD Vance will lead the U.S. negotiating team.

This news comes as fuel prices continue to undermine the country’s economic stability, exacerbating the affordability crisis already gripping the U.S. Relief seems to be fleeting, and the ruling class doesn’t care at all about those they rule over. They have shown this time and time again as we stand on the precipice of an economic apocalypse and third world war.

It has been difficult to miss the Christian Nationalism movement seeping into the ruling class. Even the current president is weaponizing religion in order to attempt to promote his war-mongering ideals.

According to Bran Onishi, the host of the popular podcast “Straight White American Jesus” and the author of “Preparing for War: The Extremist History of White Christian Nationalism and What Comes Next.”Christian nationalism is an ideology that is based on the idea that this is a Christian nation, that it was founded as a Christian nation, and, therefore, it should be a Christian nation today and should be so in the future.

That means, there should be no separation of church and state, but the church is the state and vice versa.

Irish activist and satirist Tadhg Hickey has said that the Trump administration is “weaponizing Christianity” in order to justify its actions in the Middle East. In fact, on Good Friday, Department of War chief Pete Hegseth compared a rescued pilot that he sent to war to Jesus Christ.

“You see, shot down on a Friday —Good Friday — hidden in a cave — a crevice — all of Saturday and rescued on Sunday,” Hegseth said accoridng to a report by Fox News. “Flown out of Iran as the sun was rising on Easter Sunday, a pilot reborn. All home and accounted for. A nation rejoicing. God is good.”

In addition to Hegseth’s odd comments, Trump also gave thanks to God for the mission’s success, claiming multiple times that “God was watching us.”

While appearing on RT’s East Meets West show, hosted by Tara Reade and Olga Bataman, Hickey described it as ironic that Trump and other officials in his administration have invoked biblical messaging in their public statements on the war against Iran, when in reality their actions are “going further and further away from what Christ’s teachings were.”

“It’s a weaponizing of Christianity that I find really appalling. It’s really vulgar this idea that Jesus is this kind of agent of war for these people, and there’s nothing Christian about their values or their behavior,” Hickey said.

Not long ago, troops in the U.S. were told that war is in “God’s plan” as the rulers attempt to turn this horrific display of attacks into some kind of promotion of a Holy war.

This push toward a Christian Nationalist theocracy became obvious after the death of Charlie Kirk. Kirk was an obvious Christian Nationalist and conservative who regularly boasted about besting teenagers in “debates.”

United States President Donald Trump has reset his sights on Greenland, now that Washington, Iran, and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire. Trump has notoriously suggested that the U.S. take over Greenland, and recently called it a “poorly run piece of ice.”

In a Truth Social post Wednesday evening stateside, Trump said that “NATO WASN’T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON’T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN. REMEMBER GREENLAND, THAT BIG, POORLY RUN, PIECE OF ICE!!!”

Danish Prime Minister Says Trump Is “Very Serious” About Acquiring Greenland

The latest broadside comes after Trump announced a 2-week ceasefire after more than a month of fighting with Iran. Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO members for not joining the war effort in Iran, saying his call for action was “a great test,” while threatening to pull out of the alliance, according to a report by CNBC.

U.S. relations with European allies have frayed after Trump threatened tariffs on European countries and signaled military actionto acquire Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory. In January, Trump said he and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte had reached “the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland.” –CNBC

In the aftermath of hte agreed upon ceasefire, Trump has reignited his rhetoric over Greenland. Could we be staring at another war? Trump has taken aim at NATO over its disagreement with him on Greenland in recent days. “It all began with, if you want to know the truth, Greenland,” Trump told reporters at a White House press conference Monday. “We want Greenland. They don’t want to give it to us. And I said, ‘bye, bye.’”

U.S. Won’t Say How Far It’ll Go To Acquire Greenland

The Iran war has brought fresh tensions in the diplomatic ties. Several NATO members have resisted supporting the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran. Several countries have denied American military aircraft the use of their airspace and declined to contribute naval forces to efforts aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz to energy shipping.

Not long ago, Trump refused to rule out military force as a means to acquire Greenland.

Summary:

The Hegseth/Caine presser, as expected, declared ‘victory’ in Iran while Gen. Caine emphasized the ceasefire is a “pause,” but US forces remain “ready to resume combat.“ Hegseth says, “The military will be hanging around in Iran, won’t go anywhere, and will make sure Iran complies.

Caine hails that the US has destroyed Iran’s defense-industrial base, including over 80% of missile facilities gone, and its navy lies at the “bottom of the Arabian Sea”. It’s clear that after six weeks, the Pentagon is trying to put a bow on Operation Epic Fury.

Iran, meanwhile, demands stiff fees for ships passing through Hormuz during the ceasefire, and says it holds the final authority on which vessels get to pass. Tehran leaders have asserted ‘victory’ for Iran, amid positive international reaction to the ceasefire.

Attacks on Bahrain, UAE, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia continued on Wednesday, hours after the ceasefire announcement. Also, there has yet to be any significant change in navigation traffic in the Strait of Hormuz today, per Bloomberg satellite data.

Saudi Arabia’s vital East-West oil pipeline carrying crude from the Gulf to the Red Sea for export has been attacked at a pumping station, and oil prices rise on the news.

* * *

Saudi Aramco Export Pipeline To Red Sea Struck

A huge, and not very ‘ceasefirey’ development in Saudi Arabia, per the FT (just as Hegseth was speaking): “A pumping station was hit at 1 p.m. local time, the people told FT. The attack was carried out by a drone, and damage was being assessed, one of the people told FT Saudi Aramco, which owns and operates the pipeline.” FT continues, “The people said a pumping station, one of several along the 1,200km pipeline that has become an economic lifeline for the kingdom since the near closure of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, was hit at about 1 pm local time on Wednesday.”

One Gulf-based representative and analyst complains, “For a ceasefire, the fire does not seem to be ceasing. The UAE and Kuwait are under attack, and Iran says it is under attack too. Beyond the ceasefire itself, the bigger question is that the plan still looks unclear when it comes to what follows…”

The development pushed oil slightly up…

Pentagon Tries to put a Bow on Operation Epic Fury: ‘Overwhelming Victory’

Hegseth in his Pentagon press briefing called the ceasefire an “overwhelming victory” for the United States and stated the military “stands ready” to ensure Iran complies with the agreement. He said US forces will still be “hanging around” the region, and further that Iran’s nuclear “dust” is being monitored, buried under the rubble, and that eventually the US will either take the enriched uranium or else it will be handed over. “Iran begged for a ceasefire,” Hegseth declared.

“We stand ready in the background to ensure Iran upholds every reasonable term,” Hegseth said. Also, Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Caine stated that all US objectives in Iran have been achieved.

He claimed that the US has destroyed Iran’s defense-industrial base, including over 80% of missile facilities gone, and its navy lies at the “bottom of the Arabian Sea”. It’s clear that after six weeks, the Pentagon is trying to put a bow on Operation Epic Fury.

During the Q&A, there was a question – largely dodged by Hegseth – centered on wither the US has achieved “strategic” victory vs. merely tactical victory. That ultimately is the question.

Also, is there really ceasefire on the ground? But this is merely day one:

But Iran also sees this as a victory

The United States and Iran have announced a two-week suspension of all attacks, and Tehran reportedly agreed to allow safe transit of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. It all started with President Trump seizing on the last-minute olive branch plan offered by Pakistan’s prime minister, which urged a two-week extension of the US deadline before massive obliteration bombings began, and in return, Iran would agree to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has essentially declared victory and stated that the upcoming talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Friday do not guarantee an end to the war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given supportive lip service to the US decision but stated that Lebanon is excluded from the two-week ceasefire.

Latest from Trump on Truth Social:

Oil prices dropped rapidly after Trump announced the pause, with Brent crude trading just below $95 per barrel. Qatar’s Cabinet welcomed the US-Iran ceasefire brokered by Pakistan, stating it emphasizes “the necessity of immediately halting all hostile actions and practices that undermine regional stability, respect for state sovereignty, and the assurance of security for maritime passages, freedom of navigation, and international trade.”

Iran, meanwhile, is demanding stiff fees for ships passing through Hormuz during the ceasefire, and says it holds the final authority on which vessels get to pass. So now, in essence… stability in global energy flows depends on accommodating Iran, AND it will likely get sanctions relief, per the deal on the table.

Iranian state media has featured celebratory scenes in the streets:

Ceasefire Hailed Internationally

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on X that he held a “warm, substantive” conversation with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian. “I conveyed my deep appreciation for the wisdom and sagacity of the Iranian leadership in accepting Pakistan’s offer to host peace talks in Islamabad later this week to work jointly for the return of peace to the region,” he said.

“President Pezeshkian reaffirmed Iran’s participation in the upcoming negotiations and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s efforts, while conveying his best wishes for the people of Pakistan,” he added.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun welcomed the ceasefire, while Israel has instead asserted that Lebanon remains outside the agreement and continued strikes on the country.

To quote armchair war hawk Michael Weiss, A month ago, Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” Now the U.S. claims these are a feasible starting point for negotiations…

Pope Leo XIV praised the agreement as a “sign of real hope,” stating, “I welcome with satisfaction, and as a sign of real hope, the announcement of an immediate two-week truce. Only by returning to negotiations can we reach the end of the war,” during his weekly audience at the Vatican.

The International Atomic Energy Agency welcomed the ceasefire and signaled readiness to support a diplomatic resolution. Director General Rafael Grossi stated, “IAEA DG Grossi welcomes … a return to diplomacy aimed at negotiating a settlement on key issues including Iran’s nuclear program.” It added: “The IAEA stands ready to support these efforts through its indispensable safeguards and verification role.”

Attacks Continue? Hormuz Status

However, attacks on Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait continued on Wednesday, hours after the ceasefire announcement. Also, there has yet to be any significant change in navigation traffic in the Strait of Hormuz today, per Bloomberg satellite data.

A global shipping industry group representing 130 companies and around 1,500 vessels stated that conditions in the Gulf remain unstable. CEO Knut Arild Hareide said, “We note the signals of a ceasefire, but the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains unresolved and unpredictable.”

Russia has dismissed the allegations as a “fabrication” by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In a revelation that underscores the expanding ripple effects of the war in Ukraine, Ukrainian intelligence officials allege that Russia has provided Iran with a detailed blueprint to cripple Israel’s national energy infrastructure. According to exclusive reporting by The Jerusalem Post on April 6, Moscow transferred a list of 55 critical energy sites, enabling potential precision strikes that could trigger mass, prolonged blackouts across Israel. This intelligence sharing marks a significant escalation in military cooperation between two nations united by their confrontations with the West, potentially opening a dangerous new front in Middle Eastern tensions.

The blueprint for blackouts

The alleged Russian-provided target list, obtained by sources close to Ukrainian intelligence, categorizes Israeli energy facilities into three tiers of strategic importance. Level One targets are critical production facilities, with the Orot Rabin power station singled out as a primary objective whose destruction would cripple the national system. Level Two encompasses major urban and industrial energy hubs serving dense population centers, while Level Three includes regional substations and smaller plants. The Russian assessment, as reported, capitalizes on a perceived structural weakness: Israel operates as an isolated “energy island,” unable to import electricity from neighbors. Consequently, damaging even a few central components could cause a total and prolonged grid collapse.

A strategic partnership deepens

This alleged intelligence transfer is framed by Ukrainian officials as the latest manifestation of a deepening Russia-Iran alliance, solidified since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The relationship, formalized in a 2025 comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, has evolved from Iran supplying Russia with Shahed drones to a more reciprocal exchange. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently warned that battlefield knowledge and technology are now flowing from Russia back to Iran. He has previously cited evidence of Russian components in drones used in Middle Eastern attacks, alleging a full-cycle partnership where Russian-made, Iranian-style drones are now deployed against regional targets.

Diversion and denial

Kyiv posits a dual motive behind Moscow’s actions: emboldening a key ally and deliberately fomenting a fresh international crisis. By stoking conflict in the Middle East, Russia could divert global attention and military resources away from the Ukrainian front. Russian officials have vehemently denied the allegations. Ambassador Anatoly Viktorov dismissed the report as a “fabrication,” accusing Zelensky of spreading “fakes” to regain dwindling international focus. Viktorov argued that coordinates for civilian sites are public information and that Russia maintains its own direct security channels with Israel.

The evolving axis

The accusation fits a pattern of growing interdependency between Moscow and Tehran, born from mutual isolation. Historically, their cooperation was cautious, but the war in Ukraine has acted as a catalyst. Iran’s provision of drones and missiles helped Russia offset initial shortages, while Russia has offered advanced military technology and, as per U.S. and Ukrainian reports, satellite intelligence in return. This new allegation suggests the partnership has matured to include joint operational planning against third countries, transforming a tactical alliance into a strategic one with broader geopolitical disruptive potential.

A network of vulnerabilities

The alleged target list reveals more than a potential threat to Israel; it highlights how modern conflicts are increasingly interconnected. Tactics honed in one theater—such as Russia’s sustained attacks on Ukrainian energy grids—are being exported, with adapted intelligence, to another. It underscores the vulnerability of national infrastructure in an era where satellite surveillance is ubiquitous and alliances are fluid. For Israel, the warning reinforces the existential threat posed by a heavily armed Iran potentially guided by sophisticated external intelligence. For the West, it illustrates the complex challenge of a resurgent axis capable of opening multiple simultaneous pressure points.

The unverified intelligence report remains a point of fierce contention, yet it vividly captures the current geopolitical landscape. As alliances solidify across conflict zones, the tools of war—be they drones, missiles, or satellite imagery—increasingly serve shared strategic interests that transcend regional boundaries, creating a web of vulnerability that connects the battlefields of Eastern Europe to the power grids of the Middle East.

Oil prices have plunged as Iran has allowed the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during the two-week ceasefire. Both the United States and Iran have agreed to halt attacks, which will give Americans a much-needed break at the pump.

According to a report by CNBC, US ruler Donald Trump said the two-week ceasefire was subject to Iran agreeing to a complete, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. has received a 10-point proposal from Iran that is a workable basis for negotiations, he said.

“Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two-week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated,” Trump said in a social media post.

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Tehran will allow safe passage through the Strait during the ceasefire via “coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration to technical limitations.” –CNBC

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said in a social media post.

Iran has already said that this ceasefire agreement acts as a defeat of the U.S. That statement is not likely to sit well with the war mongers in the ruling class.

Trump’s Deadline For The Opening Of The Strait Of Hormuz Is “Final”

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” Trump said in a social media post earlier on Tuesday. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will.”

It turned out to be nothing more than war-mongering fluff coming from the current ruling class.

About 20% of all global oil supplies passed through the Strait before the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28th. The narrow sea route connects producers in the Persian Gulf to global markets.

At least the pain at the pump could be alleviated as the negotiations continue and the vital waterway is reopened.
