The New Freedom Fighter - Anna Hazare

Very few social activists have captured the attention of Indians across the globe as Anna Hazare did during his "fast unto death" over the issue of the Lokpal Bill in New Delhi in April 2011.

Hazare, a Gandhian by belief, outlook and practice, has become the face of India's fight against corruption. During his fast over the Lokpal Bill, Hazare, a quintessential traditional Indian by looks and mannerism, managed to inspire and mobilize the support of even the ultra-modern Indians - Indians for whom the word "social" only means having a profile on social networking sites. The "Anna Hazare fast" can be described as the first real "social networking movement" in India.

Hazare, a former Army man, began his social activism from Ralegan Siddhi, a village in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra, where he successfully led a movement against alcoholism and made Ralegan Siddhi a "model village".

Hazare's campaign was instrumental in the implementation of the Right to Information Act in Maharashtra, which is considered one of the best RTI Acts in India.

A Ramon Magsaysay award winner, Anna Hazare, like his idol, Mahatma Gandhi, has triggered a debate over the use of fast as a means of protest in India. By sheer commitment and simplicity, he has demonstrated that Gandhian principles are relevant even in the 21st-century India.

Kia Soul Flex - Cheaper Fuel, Better Economy, More Power, Less Pollution

The major announcement of last week's Brazilian Motor Show in São Paulo was Kia's Soul Flex. Though it's the first Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) from Korea, ethanol derived from sugar cane is 40% cheaper than gas in Brazil, so flex fuel vehicles make up 85% of new car sales. On top of the cheaper fuel, the Soul Flex gets a 44% improvement in fuel efficiency, with power and torque figures also a slight improvement compared with the existing petrol model. Scheduled to go on sale in Brazil early next year, the Soul Flex is able to run on 100% ethanol, 100% gasoline or an ethanol-petrol mixture.

Brazil is currently ranked second in the world, in terms of ethanol production, and consequently its motorists enjoy the low cost of ethanol. As well as lower fuel costs, the industrial product tax (purchase tax) on new flex vehicles is only 11% – 2% lower than petrol models. Kia aims to further strengthen its presence in the Brazilian market by introducing new Flex models into each market segment – starting with an all-new Sportage FFV towards the end of 2011.

The Screens
HTC Desire
What a bittersweet experience. When you first lay eyes on the Desire, you'll love the screen. Your home screens and the live backgrounds of Android 2.1 look absolutely gorgeous. It's once you start viewing photographs and watching video that the shortcomings of the AMOLED technology used in the Desire become apparent.
For some in-depth information about the shortcomings of the AMOLED screen, check out Ars Technica and Display Mate. Both articles are talking about the Nexus One's display, but it's the same display used in the Desire.
Xperia X10
Just...wow. I only need two words to describe the X10's screen - massive and gorgeous. You're not going to find greater pixel density outside of HTC's Windows Mobile devices. No matter what you're looking at - webpages, photos, video - it looks absolutely amazing.
The Design
The Xperia X10 is certainly an eye catching design, but once you're holding it, it loses a lot of the magic. Putting such impressive specifications inside such a plasticy case was a bad move - especially with the price tag they've slapped on it.
The Desire departs from the HTC look we're used to. That trademark chin is still there, but it's much more subtle. The optical trackball is certainly much nicer than the physical trackball of the HTC Hero, but I'd still rather use the touchscreen.
The UI
HTC Desire
My first experience with a custom user interface running on top of Android was HTC's Sense UI running on the HTC Hero, and I loved it. The Sense UI is back on the Desire, and it's badder than ever. There's seven home screens to customize as you see fit, and you can pinch to zoom out and see thumbnails of all seven screens, and quickly jump to the screen you want. There's HTC widgets and Android widgets displayed in a unified interface, and HTC are able to release new widgets for download without updating the operating system.
Xperia X10
Having experienced the dry look and feel of pre-2.0 Android, I can't fault Sony Ericsson's decision to create a custom UI to place on top of Android 1.6... but I can fault the execution, which manages to make a blazing fast 1GHz processor feel rather inadequate, and a whopping 4-inch screen seem too small. Portions of the UI seem like they've been designed specifically to waste all that real estate.
Performance
I'd initially thought that a 1GHz processor would be ample grunt for a smartphone to do just about anything, but the differing performance of these two phones has proved otherwise. I'm sure you've seen those TV ads for phones where everything is fluid and instant, even when the real world performance is far from it. Well, the HTC Desire is as close to that magical "ad phone" I've ever seen, whereas the Xperia has some serious performance issues.
This is probably not so surprising, given that HTC has had a long time to polish the Sense UI over multiple devices, and Sony Ericsson has tried to do something fairly ambitious straight out of the gate with their user experience, biting off more than they could chew in the process.
Social Media
HTC Desire
HTC's social media software, FriendStream, is functional enough, but it needs a couple of UX tweaks. The ability to view only Facebook updates or Twitter updates on their own would help, and it would be nice to be able to click links in tweets directly from the widget, rather than click on the tweet for the expanded view in HTC's Twitter client, Peep, before being able to click on the link.
Linking your contacts to their Facebook and Twitter profiles works beautifully, and flags potential matches for you which makes the initial setup much less painful.
Xperia X10
Sony Ericsson's social media software, Timescape, represents form over function at its finest... and the form isn't even that good. Feeds from your various social networks are displayed in "splines", which makes sense, but you can only see an average of four or five words from each status update, and profile pictures that look gorgeous in even the most barebones Twitter clients are stretched and warped beyond recognition. You can't even visit links in tweets - clicking them takes you to that user's profile on mobile.twitter.com site, which is totally unintuitive. I do have to give Sony Ericsson props for understanding that Twitter and Facebook are often different worlds, and you might only want to view messages from one of those services at a time.
Given Timescape is designed for socialites, I'm surprised there's no option for more frequent updates. The shortest update frequency for Twitter is 5 minutes, and Facebook is 1 hour. This is exacerbated by the fact that when it does pull new data, the updates are put into the spline one at a time, so the spline just keeps scrolling and scrolling - and you can't stop it from doing so if you see something interesting.
You can supposedly link your contacts to their social media profiles, but I never got it to do anything other than place a link to someone's Facebook profile from their contact.
Both
Both HTC and Sony Ericsson have quite a way to go before you can use one of these phones without a dedicated Twitter client (we recommend Twidroid) and the official Facebook application. Apple looks set to launch Facebook integration in iPhone OS 4.0, so we hope this spawns a new lot of innovation in this space.
Battery Life
While the X10 has an extra 100mAh up its sleeve compared to the Desire's 1400mAh battery, it's really splitting hairs to find a winner in terms of real life usage.
With 3G enabled, Gmail syncing and Twidroid updating in the background, both phones had about 40% left on the battery after 24 hours. That's nowhere near Nokia or BlackBerry levels of standby battery life, but it's impressive nonetheless - if you forget to charge either of these phones overnight, you'll have ample charge left to make it to the office the next day.
How they perform as a phone
Sometimes it's easy to forget that we buy these devices primarily to use as a telephone. The X10 has a couple of issues - the earpiece is a bit on the quiet side, so if you're the kind of person who finds yourself trying to communicate in noisy bars and clubs you might have some issues with it. More importantly, there's some bizarre software glitches that cause the phone to forget about missed calls and text messages - which is definitely not ideal.
The HTC Desire is definitely the most comfortable "slab of glass" style phone I've ever used. The rounded shape at the top is so much nicer on the ear than the metal rim of the iPhone or the plastic rim of the X10.
Multitouch
The HTC Desire is multitouch enabled, with pinch zoom in the browser and Google Maps providing a far superior user experience to the multitouch-less X10. The Desire's touchscreen is also far more responsive than that of the HTC Hero. Interestingly, there's conflicting information about whether multitouch is coming to the X10 when it's updated to Android 2.1 or 2.2 later this year.
Media Playback
Both these phones are head to head in terms of media support, but that's not to say either is particularly impressive. DivX and FLAC support would be an easy way to win the hearts of media junkies, so it's surprising to see that neither of these phones have done so.
The X10 puts the emphasis on Recently Played, Recently Added and Favorite media. You have to click "More" to get to the standard list of media. That might work for some, but not me - only my favorite media makes it onto my microSD card in the first place. The transitions and animations end up detracting from the usability - I just want a fast way to navigate through what's on there, not eye candy.
The Desire is as close to the iPhone/iPod touch as you're going to get outside Apple land. Navigating the menus is intuitive and very fluid, and you can create playlists on the device. At Mobile World Congress, HTC announced that the Desire would be getting DivX support in a future update, but neglected to mention when that update might be hitting devices.
The Winner
The X10 has such potential. If Sony Ericsson could iron out the kinks in their software, and improve format support with FLAC and DivX support, it'd be a hard one to beat in terms of media, but as it stands, it's really hard to recommend - the first thing I'd do if I bought one would be install a vanilla Android 2.1 ROM.
If you haven't figured it out by now, the HTC Desire is the clear winner of this shootout. Despite the shortcomings of the AMOLED screen, it's by far the nicest Android phone I've ever used. If you want an Android phone today, this is what you should be buying.

We've all been there - you're trying to communicate with someone who doesn't speak your language and you don't speak theirs, and no amount of charades and gesturing will do the trick. You need a toilet and he's wondering why you're telling him your brother eats flies. Converse is the name of a new app that will soon become available which is claimed to turn your iPhone into a double ended language translator – a multilingual, face-to-face instant messaging conversation. It's one of the most innovative uses of the iPhone's form factor we've yet seen, with both people able to type on a keyboard in their own language at the same time and have the words translated and displayed for the other person. If it works as advertised, Converse is set to significantly reduce communication problems on holidays and business trips. The new app enables an English speaker to communicate with people in 51 different languages and keyboards accommodate non-Latin languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Thai, Czech, Hebrew and Ukrainian scripts.
You can ask a question by simply typing it in, just like a text message or email. The text is then immediately translated into your chosen language and displayed on the other end of the screen. The person can then respond to the question in their language in exactly the same way and their response is translated, then displayed to you in the Queen's English.
This novel twist on language translation is claimed to use “the best language translation APIs available on the web” and enable “fluent complex text-based conversations with almost anyone in the world.” Now if you've ever played with web translation, you'll know this is a big claim, but with a price of just GBP1.79, even if it's only half that good it'll have a nuclear level bang-per-buck factor as translation apps are among the highest priced apps in the iTunes store. Whatsmore, the convenience of having a single word or phrase translator for rough and ready translations on the go will be simply too good to pass up.

After a gradual build-up throughout 2009 the roll-out of Android mobile phone handsets is really starting to snowball - and that means more choice for consumers. If the iDEN Motorola i1 and the WiMAX HTC EVO 4G aren't your thing (or your network), you might want to take a look at the multimedia-savvy Samsung Galaxy S, the Dell Aero and the budget-friendly Kyocera Zio. If the waiting game isn't your thing, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and the HTC Desire are just about to drop in the UK, and will arrive shortly in the US.

ASUS' Eee Keyboard Pc Combines all the Functionality of a Netbook with a Wireless keyboard

Since early December 2009, consumers have been tantalized with news of the upcoming release of the ASUS Eee keyboard PC – a keyboard with all the functionality of a netbook. It seems they won’t be left waiting for too much longer. ASUS announced at CES 2010 that the Eee keyboard should be available sometime in the first quarter of 2010.

At first glance, the Eee keyboard PC consists of a regular-sized keyboard with a 5-inch touch display set off to the right-hand side – nothing particularly special there. But lurking beneath this innocent-looking framework is much more than you expected. Under the I, O and P keys lies an Intel Atom N270 (1.6 GHz) processor, meanwhile there’s also a single DIMM slot with 1 gigabyte of DDR2 memory and a built-in battery that boasts up to four hours of power.

The miniature touch display is mostly used for widgets – you can fit nine on the panel – much like a SmartPhone. The display also functions as a touchpad and mouse buttons. The screen is activated by a tap which initiates a click and the side display will support multi-touch gestures.

If you want to run Windows XP Home – the most likely option given the 16-GB SSD capability – you’ll need an external display. A separately purchased WiCast HDMI kit will allow you to transmit wirelessly from up to 5 meters (about 16.5 feet) away and is capable of streaming 720p and 1080i content. A Broadcom HD decoder chip is also installed to improve playback.

The Asus Eee Keyboard PC is expected to be released sometime before April 2010 and should retail for between USD499 to USD599.

Honda has Begun Work on a Domestic Solar-Powered Hydrogen Refueling Station That is Smaller and Intended to Fit Within the Home's Garage for Overnight

Honda's next gen solar-powered hydrogen fuel cell station for home use

Honda has begun work on a smaller solar hydrogen station prototype intended for use as a home refueling appliance. Capable of an overnight refill of fuel cell electric vehicles it is designed to be a single, integrated unit that will fit in the user's garage. Honda's next generation Solar Hydrogen Station, though not as big as the previous systems, will still produce enough hydrogen (0.5kg) via an eight-hour overnight fill for daily commuting (10,000 miles per year) for a fuel cell electric vehicle.

The company says its previous solar hydrogen station system required a bulky electrolyzer and a separate compressor unit to create high pressure hydrogen. The compressor was the largest and most expensive component and reduced system efficiency. By creating a new high differential pressure electrolyzer, Honda engineers have been able to eliminate the compressor entirely - a world's first for a home use system. This innovation also reduces the size of other key components to make the new station the world's most compact system, while improving system efficiency by more than 25 percent (value calculated based on simulations) compared to the solar hydrogen station system it replaces.

This will make the unit much more palatable for motorists with smaller-sized garages or apartment dwellers with shared parking facilities.

Designed to work in conjunction with Honda's FCX Clarity vehicle, the charging station is also compatible with a "Smart Grid" energy system. Honda says its Solar Hydrogen Station would enable users to refill their vehicle overnight without the requirement of hydrogen storage, which would lower CO2 emissions by using less expensive off-peak electrical power. Honda says that during daytime peak power times, the Solar Hydrogen Station can export renewable electricity to the grid, providing a cost benefit to the customer, while remaining energy neutral.

Engineered for an eight-hour, slow fill for overnight refilling of a fuel cell electric vehicle, the home-use Solar Hydrogen Station would replenish the hydrogen for a typical daily driving, meeting the commuting requirements of many drivers. As with the previous generation system, Honda says the hydrogen purity from the new station meets the highest SAE (J2719) and ISO (14687) specifications.

Solar power

Installed at the Los Angeles Center of Honda R&D Americas, the new Solar Hydrogen Station will employ the identical Honda Soltec 48-panel, 6.0kW solar array that powered the previous system. The array utilizes thin film solar cells composed of copper, indium, gallium and selenium (CIGS).

A key strategy in Honda’s creation of a solar hydrogen station for home-use was to create a new lifestyle with convenient, clean, energy-efficient and sustainable home refueling, by addressing the need for refueling infrastructure that can advance the wider use of fuel cell electric vehicles by consumers.

Honda hopes the combination of a fuel cell electric vehicle and the solar hydrogen station will help lead to the establishment of a hydrogen society based on renewable energy, resulting in a major reduction of CO2 emissions and greater energy sustainability. No word yet on a testing schedule or availability.

Historically speaking …

Honda began operation of its first Solar Hydrogen Station at the Los Angeles Center of Honda R&D Americas in 2001 with the creation of the three-unit system with hydrogen storage in July.

By October that year, Honda was working on a new two-unit system with an original Honda electrolyzer and a new solar array utilizing prototype Honda CIGS solar cells that offered improved system efficiency.

In August 2008, a solar array fitted with mass production CIGS cells from Honda Soltec Co., reduced the size of the array by 20 percent and further improved photo voltaic (PV) energy efficiency.

Now, a new single-unit station begins operation, improving to world's best system efficiency - increasing the efficiency by more than 25 percent (value calculated based on simulations) compared to the previous solar hydrogen station system, for a world's highest system efficiency.

The Car was Sold in 360,000 Us Dollars in Damage Condition And Will not be Restored

An archeological find of some magnitude went under the hammer this week, when a rusted 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia that has spent the last three quarters of a century at the bottom of a lake in North Italy was auctioned. When found and raised, it validated a legend that had circulated for 70 years. Mercifully, it will not be restored, but will live on in an American museum in its partially reclaimed glory as living proof of the craftsmanship of the era in general, and the Bugatti marque in particular. The Italian legend fetched a staggering EUR 260,500 - US$360,000. They do not make 'em like this any more.

One of the most remarkable stories of automotive history closed another fascinating chapter at the third annual Bonhams Rétromobile sale on January 23 when the legendary Lake Maggiore 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia fetched EUR 260,500. The car was purchased by a European enthusiast representing the Peter Mullin Collection in California, where the car will become a museum exhibit in its present unrestored condition. The car was raised from the floor of Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy last July, where it had been more than 50 meters below the surface, for over 70 years.

The story of the majestic two-seater began in April 1925 when it was delivered new to an architect living in Nancy, France. Three years later, the owner moved to Switzerland, taking his Bugatti with him, but he failed to pay the import duty on the car. On leaving Switzerland, the Frenchman left the car to his Swiss hosts in Tessin. In 1937 its new owners, fearing that they may be fined for failing to pay the hefty import duty, dumped the car in the lake.

It hence became one of those urban legends. Some believed it to be true, that such a car had been dumped in the lake, but most did not.

Rumors circulated for seven decades of a pristine Bugatti being at the bottom of the Lake, before members of the Centro Sport Subacquei Salvataggio Ascona located the 84-year-old Bugatti and brought it to the surface on July 2009.

The car was auctioned on January 23 at the third annual Bonhams Rétromobile sale in Paris, with the car expected to bring between EUR 70,000 and EUR 90,000. Touchscreens found in most mobile devices today use capacitance or resistance technology - fine for detecting input from a finger, but not so great when it comes to detecting how much pressure that finger is applying. However, this limitation could be about to change with news that Japanese touch screen manufacturer, Nissha, has licensed new technology that allows a touchscreen to detect pressure, even from a finger. This adds a third dimension to touchscreen interaction and opens up a raft of potential applications.

erns Peratech’s Quantum Tunnelling Composites (QTC) technology, which is used to create ultra-thin, low power force sensitive switches of any shape or size. Adding force sensitivity to touchscreens offers the prospect of adding the third dimension to touchscreen interfaces and could give users the ability to search deeper into a file structure simply by pressing harder, or control an avatar’s movement through a game more naturally. It would also be particularly useful for handwriting recognition in Asian markets due to the variation in line thickness in Asian scripts.

QTC technology's conductive filler particles feature spikes. These spikes produce a localized increase in the electric field at the tips which effectively reduce the barrier’s width and allows conduction to occur.

As QTC is compressed, the conductive particles are brought closer together and barrier widths reduced further. This leads to an exponential decrease in electrical resistance and this ability to vary the width of the barrier through compression, tension or torsion is what gives QTC its pressure sensitivity.

Its developers say that because QTC technology has no moving parts and requires no air gap between contacts it is extremely reliable and suitable for integration into the thinnest electronic devices. It is also low power and interfaces can be designed with no start resistance so that without pressure, the switch draws no power and passes no current.

The US$1.4 million licensing agreement gives Nissha the exclusive worldwide rights to Peratech’s QTC technology for screen smaller than 3.5 by 5.5-inches for the initial period of one year.

Apple iPad’s most striking feature, its gorgeous 9.7-inch touchscreen display, uses liquid crystal display technology — but with a few unusual twists — to present a vivid image and a wide viewing angle.

“The iPad’s display uses the same capacitive touchscreen technology as the iPhone and iPod Touch,” says Vinita Jakhanwal, principal analyst for iSuppli. “At the same time, it offers a better picture quality than conventional LCDs.”

After months of speculation, Apple launched its tablet, the iPad on Wednesday. The lightweight device (1.5 pounds) features a luminous touchscreen and a user interface similar to the iPhone. The iPad, which can cost $500 to $830 depending on the model, runs an expanded version of the operating system used in the iPhone.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPad’s screen as a LED-backlit with In-Plane Switching (IPS). Jobs was referring to a type of LCD screen that is more often found in HDTVs than it is in mobile devices.

So-called twisted nematic LCDs have dominated consumer laptop and phone displays. The viewing angle on these screens is limited, ranging from 110 to 120 degrees. When the screen is viewed outside this optimal range, its colors can look “off” and the overall image is faded or invisible.

In-Plane Switching helps fix those problems. In IPS LCD screens, the crystal molecules are oriented so their motion is parallel to the panel, instead of perpendicular to it. For viewers, the result is a very wide viewing angle — up to 180 degrees — with brilliant color.

“TVs have always used some variation of IPS in their LCD screens but now we are seeing this move to smaller computing devices,” says Jakhanwal.

The iPad’s screen, though, doesn’t have a wide aspect ratio, which is unusual in the TV-display world, says research firm DisplaySearch. Instead of a 16:10 or 16:9 aspect ratio, the iPad screen uses a 4:3 ratio.

“Perhaps they were trying to find a middle ground between the requirements for books, magazines and newspapers and the requirements for video and gaming,” say analysts at DisplaySearch.

The iPad display has some other interesting features. It is arsenic- and mecury-free and has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, which Apple had introduced in the iPhone 3G S. The iPad’s 1024 x 768 display resolution, at 132 pixels per inch, has chunkier pixels than the iPhone 3G S, which has a smaller display but a resolution of 163 pixels per inch.

But that may not be a fair comparison, says Jakhanwal. “If you have a smaller form factor, you need a higher resolution to better read the information on the display,” she says. Also, she adds, “the iPad has a more vivid display than a laptop screen.”

The iPad’s display is likely sourced from LG Display and Innolux, says iSuppli.

The biggest disappointment for tech enthusiasts is the lack of an OLED screen option in the iPad. That should be no surprise, say DisplaySearch and iSuppli. Display manufacturers just don’t have the fabrication capacity to create large quantities of big OLED displays, says Jakhanwal.

“The single supplier for active-matrix OLED screen today, Samsung Mobile, [its] current production capacity is all taken up by the mobile phone market,” she says. That means large volumes of very small screens.

“It’s unlikely they will scale back on that to produce lower volume, larger displays for Apple.”

Sony also produces OLED screens but in limited quantities, largely for its own products, like the Sony XEL-1.

Though Apple showed the iPad’s potential as an e-book reader, iSuppli and DisplaySearch remain skeptical about it. LCD screens, even in black-and-white mode, get washed out in bright sunlight. And if users turn on the backlight to improve the contrast, they are likely to draw down the device’s battery. On top of that, reading on an LCD means you’re staring into a light source, which produces more eyestrain than reading words by reflected light, as you do with printed pages or E Ink displays like those used in the Kindle, Nook and Sony Reader

Next up the ladder is the 985 C3 4V, which weighs in at 157 kg, uses a 155 bhp 999R water-cooled Testastretta Ducati engine and costs EUR 50,000 (US$70,500).

An iPad “does so much more — games, photos, videos, email,” wrote Fred Vogelsteinin Wired. “I might eventually ditch my laptop for it too.”

GigaOm also sees the Kindle as a defunct device. “The Amazon Kindle is dead thanks to the rich media capabilities of the iPad as well as the full software-based keyboard,” Stacey Higginbotham wrote.

But are those bells and whistles distracting to those who just want to curl up with an e-book? Brad Stone wrote on Bits that the Kindle “will continue to be the best device for lovers of long-form reading, period…when you read a book, you just don’t want to have email, Twitter and the ESPN Web site beckoning from the browser.”

Price tags are another frequent point of comparison.

Mashable’s Josh Catone pointed to the iPad’s $499 price, only $10 more than what the Kindle costs. “While $489 might be too much for just an e-book reader, $10 more for a device that does a whole lot more may be worth it to a lot of people,” he wrote.

TechCrunch said that in the long run, consumers won’t base their decision on the price difference. The Kindle “is nearly half the price, starting at $260 versus $500 for the iPad, although the cheapest Kindle DX with an equivalent 9.7-inch screen is $489. That is pretty close already. What happens when the price of iPad-like devices trend down to a point of consumer indifference?”

On CNet, David Carnoy argued that the iPad’s launch could be good for Amazon’s e-book business. “Sticking books on there for $13.99 instead of $9.99 isn’t going to work and will just play to Amazon’s hand,” he said. “That may just mean a lot of folks will end up buying an Apple device to read on, but turning to Amazon for their e-books, whether they be black-and-white text-only affairs, or the fancier color, interactive stuff that’s certainly coming to the Kindle Store by the end of this year.”

When is an eBook reader not merely an eBook reader? When it’s an enTourage eDGE reader. Unveiled this week at CES the clamshell designed reader is billed as the world’s first dualbook, with a 9.7” black and white E-ink screen on the one side and 10.1” LCD color touchscreen on the other. Along with 4GB of internal memory and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capability, the unit functions as a mini-netbook, notepad and audio/video recorder.

The dual displays of the enTourage eDGe reader can be flipped to be used tablet style, and the included stylus enables the user to not only scribble notes in the margin of the E-ink side but also to highlight text to send to an index. The LCD side runs on Android software, and features a large onscreen USB keyboard, as well as the option of an external USB or Bluetooth keyboard.

Electric carmaker Tesla Motors and electronics giant Panasonic have announced that they will be collaborating on development of next-generation battery cells for electric vehicles. Tesla Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel says “Combining Tesla’s rigorous cell testing and understanding of EV requirements with Panasonic’s cutting-edge battery technology will result in custom cells optimized for use in EVs.” Panasonic’s nickel-based lithium-ion battery cells will be included in Tesla’s newest battery packs, due to their high capacity, light weight, durability and long life. According to Panasonic, they are the highest energy density battery cells currently in production.

Panasonic is currently in the midst of a three-year $US1 billion investment in research, development and production of lithium-ion battery cells. To realize this, high-capacity storage systems are essential. Because lithium-ion based storage systems are more compact and lighter than conventional storage systems using other types of rechargeable battery cells, high hopes are placed on the practical application of lithium-ion storage systems.”

Panasonic’s new Tesla-bound cells will be compatible with other cell formats, allowing Tesla to continue its current practice of combining cells from multiple suppliers within its battery packs. Mercedes assembles Silver Arrows F1 dream team

The new Silver Arrows Formula One works team was presented in Stuttgart today and though there were no surprises, the line-up was nonetheless formidable. Take a world championship winning team (Brawn F1 2009), add to it substantial long term sponsorship from Petronas, the full weight of Mercedes Benz management, finances and engineering (with the emphasis on engine - the title engine of the last two years) and then slot in the winningest F1 driver in history, and you have a pretty impressive line-up. The most ominous aspect of it all though is that the pairing of Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher is back together. It won two titles at Benetton, reestablished the Ferrari dynasty then Brawn created his own history last year. The car remains under a shroud of secrecy until its track debut next week.

Seven-time Formula One World Champion Michael Schumacher was the star of the show, but the dream team line-up assembled was remarkably impressive. Number two driver, Nico Rosberg and team management Ross Brawn, Nick Fry and Norbert Haug were introduced to 600 guests with a presentation and press conference at the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

The only really unknown factor revealed in Stuttgart at the launch of the team was the unveiling of the new Silver Arrows livery. In actual fact, the colour scheme is silver and green livery created from the heritage of the Silver Arrows and the team’s title partner PETRONAS.

The legacy of the Silver Arrows goes back to the 1934 Eifel Race when, on the evening before the event, the white paint was sanded off the Mercedes W25 race car to get the car under the 750kg weight limits of the formula and the silver colour of the aluminium surface of the car became synonymous with the Mercedes brand.

Though Mercedes has been the engine and money behind the British McLaren marque for many years, it hasn't been a true Mercedes Benz effort, and with the purchase of Brawn F1, it now is a full factory effort.

This season, with the return of the Silver Arrows, the MGP W01 will shine in silver combined with a flow of iridescent silver shading. On the nose and on other parts of the car traces of black carbon fibre visible are visible – a reminder of the first Silver Arrow of 1934.

I have seen how hard the team is working on the new car and I really can’t wait for the opportunity to drive it for the first time in Valencia next week. Synaptics debuts Fuse next-generation mobile phone concept

Last December, the world was introduced to the Synaptics Fuse, a new concept in mobile communications. The prototype smartphone is the result of a collaboration between Synaptics, Texas Instruments, Immersion, TheAlloy and The Astonishing Tribe (TAT). What makes this phone so special is its user/phone interface. It takesSynaptics’ pioneering touchscreen technology to a whole new level, allowing people to use the phone one-handed, and without having to even see the screen.

Conventional phones limit their touch-reception to capacitive sensing, meaning they simply detect when a finger makes contact with their screen. The Fuse incorporates capacitive and force sensors, and has them not only on its screen, but also along its sides and even on its back. The side sensors read your grip pressure, allowing for things like one-handed panning and scrolling, while the back sensors allow for unobstructed screen navigation. Two-finger input is possible, which could open the door for all sorts of new functions.

The phone also features haptic feedback, meaning that it can communicate with you through your sense of touch. You know those arcade games where the steering wheel shakes when your car goes off the track? That’s an example of haptic feedback. The Fuse uses it to let you know where your finger is on the screen, even if you can’t see it.

The nature of the development of the Fuse is also a pretty big deal, as the collaboration resulted in an end product with more good qualities than any one company could have provided. Features such as the sensor technology came from Synaptics, while Texas Instruments provided the OMAP 3630 processor, Immersion provided the haptic feedback, TheAlloy was responsible for the overall design, and TAT developed the 3D graphics and user interface software.

Is the Fuse going to be available soon in a store near you? Hard to say. Does it look like it would be fun to play with? Oh yeah.
