Almost all dedicated music and audio production software tools these days find a great deal of their work producing scores for video projects rather than just music and audio on its own. When it comes to working with audio in synch with a video project one of the most important tool sets to be familiar with is the use of markers. Managing the layout of a sound design is as important as producing the individual sounds themselves. There are in fact 6 different types of timeline point markers available in Acid and each one has a different set of uses.

1) Marker. (Orange. keystroke – M)
This is the simplest type which marks a point in musical time. Because Markers align and follow the musical time they remain fixed to the beat thus changing tempo in the project will cause the Marker to remain on the same beat but shift in actual time (minutes and seconds). Markers are therefore good for marking musical moments but not visually specific ones from the video.

2) Hit marker. (Purple. keystroke – H)
These are the opposite of above whereby the Hit marker is used to mark a point in actual time and will not be effected by changes in musical tempo. These are the perfect marks for synchronizing a sound to a visual action in the video track.

3) Region. (Green. keystroke – R)
As with the plain Marker the Region marks musical time and so will be shifted in actual time if the tempo of the project is changed. The Region allows for the setting of a pair of linked markers to indicate a section of music or sound.

4) CD Track marker. (Red. Keystroke – N)
CD Track markers are used to layout discreet music CD tracks for mastering Red Book standard CDs from the timeline. They are locked in musical time and indicate where each new track on the CD will begin and end.

5) Command marker. (Blue. INSERT menu > COMMAND)
Command markers are one of the more interesting markers in Acid as they allow you to insert metadata commands into the project for streaming media. There are a variety of different types and be used to display in the streaming media player information such as copyright, captions, website links and an array of other uses. Formats such as WMV and Real Media can use Command markers.

6) Section. (Selectable colour. Keystroke – Shift+S)
Section markers appear as coloured bands at the top of the project to mark out sections of the song. You might use these so at a glance you can see the different parts of your song or movie score (intro, act 1, chase sequence, etc). Once created you can simply click on the Section and with a click and drag move all the audio associated with that section around the timeline.

Media MashUp Daily Itinerary
Each day Media MashUp is filled with hands-on activities; implementing creative ideas, experimenting with technology, and lots of action! Each participant should arrive at the Museum at 9:30am daily and will be met by their tutor at the Powerhouse Museum main entrance.

Day 1 9:30am Arrival Activity
Every day participants will be involved in a different arrival activity. On the first day they will be presented with the theme and be given inspiration to use this theme into their own creative project.

10:30am Participants will be shown demos and examples from previous programs, and discuss how these were created.

11.00am Group workshop in Vegas, the video editing software used to edit and complete the Media MashUp projects.

11.45am Participants break into three groups and begin “storyboarding”. Everyone is assigned their own wall space in the lab, and they will use this area to turn their initial idea into a plan-of-attack for their project.

12:30pm Lunch. Lunch can be purchased at the cafe here at the Museum or participants can bring their own. A tutor will supervise during the lunch break.

1:30pm Working in their smaller groups, participants take a workshop in either Music, Video or Graphics. Over the course of the program, every group spends a session on each of the three disciplines, and learns techniques and skills specific to that creative process.

3:30pm Show and tell of today’s work. Everyone has an opportunity to share and preview their project so far, providing ideas and inspiration for the next day.
