CHESS with Renaissance Knights Grades K-4
Chess is a great equalizer in education, where anyone with determination to succeed can excel. Chess is extremely beneficial in raising children’s self-esteem while teaching self-motivation, sportsmanship, and analytical and critical thinking skills. Chess is one of the few positive extra- curricular activities for all students: not all children can play sports but all children can play chess. Chess is used as a learning tool to teach higher-order thinking skills, problem-solving skills, advanced math and reading skills, behavioral and social skills, and self-directional skills. Students will “learn” to concentrate, think creatively, and consider all of their options before they “make a move.” Reasoning, problem solving, and analysis of steps and missteps are all part of the process leading to the development of self-confidence and sound judgment.

CLAY with Eileen Collins Grades K-3
Have fun creating works of art in clay with Mrs. Collins. Students will read a story and make our very own animal in clay from the story! Get fired up to get your hands dirty and use your imagination! After the students have created and painted their pieces, Mrs. Collins fires the work in a kiln and returns it the next week. Amazing class!

DANCE MIX with Karen Gray Grades K-1

STATISTICAL SPORTS CLUB with Mr. Thomas **NEW** Grades 3-8
The Winter session begins with the NFL a week into the playoffs and ends with the NCAA basketball tournament deciding who will be in the FINAL FOUR. Statistical Sports Club analyzes several sports from a statistical standpoint, in an interactive ‘real time’ way. The class begins with following the NFL playoffs, where the students choose players for their fantasy team. Students learn how fantasy football leagues appoint a commissioner to settle disputes, and also how to calculate fantasy points for every aspect of the game. Next, the students learn about fantasy tennis, where they analyze “head to head” match-ups (Nadal is #1 but may have a losing record vs. Djokovic), style of play, how the surface of a court yields different results, and all of the statistics that exist in trying to choose which player will win a match (serving %, unforced errors, aces, etc.) The class then turns to the NBA, where students create an NBA fantasy team, and conclude with the students making March Madness picks based on their analysis. This class will not disappoint!
