Trey Thompkins Named First Team All-SEC by the AP

Georgia’s Trey Thompkins has been named to the 2010 All-SEC First Team by the Associated Press. Last week, Thompkins was named First Team All-SEC by the league’s coaches.

Thompkins is the first Bulldog named to the AP first team since Jarvis Hayes in 2002 and 2003.

Vanderbilt Beats Georgia 78-66 in SEC Tournament Quarterfinals

Vanderbilt defeated Georgia 78-66 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 SEC Basketball Tournament on Friday night. Trey Thompkins, Georgia’s leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half. He finished the game with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.

The Commodores went on a 10-2 run to close the first half leading by eight. Georgia closed the lead to two with 17:47 remaining, but couldn’t pull any closer.

Travis Leslie scored a career-high 34 points for the Dawgs (12-for-23 FG; 9-10 FT’s). He accounted for 52% of the points for the Bulldogs.

As for Georgia’s 2010 postseason hopes, the NIT is most likely out of the question. But UGA could be invited to play in the 2010 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) or the 2010 College Insider.com Tournament (CIT).

Barring a tourney invite, Georgia finishes the 2009-10 season with a 14-17 overall record and 5-11 in the SEC. Things appear to be bright for the Bulldogs under new head coach Mark Fox. Albert Jackson and Ricky McPhee graduate, but the Dawgs gain transfer Gerald Robinson Jr., signee Cady Lalanne and any other Spring 2010 signees.

Travis Leslie will return, and hopefully Trey Thompkins will return for his junior season. Various reports have him leaning towards returning to Georgia in 2010-11.

Georgia Defeats Arkansas 77-64 in 1st Round of SEC Tournament

Trey Thompkins had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists to lead the Georgia Bulldogs over the Arkansas Razorbacks 77-64 in the first round of the 2010 SEC Tournament in Nashville.

Travis Leslie scored 21 points for the Dawgs, while Dustin Ware and Ricky McPhee each added 10.

Back in February, Georgia led Arkansas by 15 points at halftime at home. But the Dawgs couldn’t hold on and lost 72-68.

Georgia, the East 6 seed, faces the Vanderbilt Commodores, the East 2 seed, tonight at 9:45 p.m. in the Quarterfinals. The game will be televised by the SEC Network (Buy Tickets).

Georgia vs. Oregon Football Games Dated; Future Schedules Updated

Yesterday, the Georgia Bulldogs released a list of future non-conference football games. All of the games were known, but the Georgia-Oregon series set for 2015 and 2016 now has confirmed dates.

The Bulldogs will travel to face the Oregon Ducks in Eugene on September 5, 2015. On September 10, 2016, Georgia will host Oregon at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

The only series that doesn’t have dates yet is the 2013-2014 home-and-home with the Clemson Tigers. We have those games tentatively listed as September 21, 2013 at Clemson and September 20, 2014 in Athens. We also list the 2013 game against Appalachian State as September 7, 2013. These dates are guesses and mildly based on prior scheduling patterns.

Georgia’s Trey Thompkins was named to the 2010 All-SEC First Team by the league’s coaches yesterday. He is the first UGA player named First Team All-SEC since Jarvis Hayes earned the award in 2003.

Thompkins, a sophomore, led the Bulldogs in 2010 with 17.7 points per game, 8.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.

The Hoop Dawgs face Arkansas tonight in the first round of the 2010 SEC Tournament in Nashville. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 9:45 p.m. ET.

The Georgia Bulldogs, who finished last in the SEC East with a 5-11 record, will face the 3rd seed Arkansas Razorbacks in the 1st round of the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee. The game will tip off at approximately 8:45 p.m. ET on Thursday and will be televised by the SEC Network (Buy Tickets).

Should the Dawgs beat the Razorbacks, they will face the Vanderbilt Commodores on Friday at 8:45 p.m. ET. Georgia beat Vanderbilt at home but lost to them in Nashville earlier this season.

Dawgs Finish 0-11 on the Road after Loss at LSU

The last place SEC West LSU Tigers beat the last place SEC East Georgia Bulldogs 50-48 on Saturday. The Dawgs finish the 2009-10 regular season with a dismal 0-11 record on the road and 0-8 in the SEC.

Trey Thompkins led the Bulldogs with 19 points, 16 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 steals. Travis Leslie had a disappointing game, scoring only 7 points and committing 6 turnovers.

On Thursday, Georgia plays Arkansas in the first round of the 2010 SEC Tournament. The Razorbacks defeated UGA in Athens 72-68 in February. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 8:45 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Game Day Trick Shot with Charles Barkley

Connor Nolte (PassersRemorse.com) has posted his game day trick shot with Charles Barkley. Barkley, who is a friend of UGA head coach Mark Fox, came to Athens to help Nolte with his basketball project.

Nolte transferred to Georgia from Furman and is sitting out this season due to transfer rules. He will be able to play for the Dawgs in 2010-11.

Before each home game, Nolte posts a video of a basketball trick shot. Mark Fox and even Mark Richt have participated in the project. Recently, Mark Fox’s trick shot was featured on ESPN SportsCenter as a Top 10 Play of the Day.

No. 3 Kentucky Tops Georgia 80-68 on Senior Night

Kentucky led by only four points at the half, but used a 12-point run and the start of the 2nd half to put Georgia away early. The Dawgs trimmed the lead to nine with 5:18 remaining, but couldn’t get any closer and lost 80-68.

The game was Senior Night for the Bulldogs. Playing in their final home game at Stegeman Coliseum were center Albert Jackson, forward Tyler Whatley and guard Ricky McPhee.

The loss drops Georgia to 13-15 overall and 5-10 in the SEC.

Georgia plays their final regular season game on Saturday at the LSU Tigers. The Dawgs hope to get their only road win of the season in Baton Rouge. The game will be televised by FSN at 5:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Bulldogs Hang On Late to Defeat Gators 78-76

Georgia led Florida by 15 at halftime and by 15 with 9:45 remaining in the game. But the Gators chipped away at the Bulldogs’ lead and it dwindled down to only two with 1:42 remaining. Both teams then went scoreless the rest of the way and Georgia hung on to win 78-76.

The Bulldogs also beat the Gators last year in Athens by two points, 88-86. The win improves UGA’s overall record to 13-14 and 5-9 in the SEC.

Trey Thompkins led the Bulldogs with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Travis Leslie added 12 points, Dustin Ware scored 10 and Jeremy Price came off the bench to score 13.

Georgia faces the no. 2 Kentucky Wildcats in their final regular-season home game on Wednesday. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 8:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Georgia Falters Late in Bid to Upset Vandy in Nashville

Georgia had Vanderbilt on the ropes in Nashville up by five points with 33 seconds remaining. But the Dawgs couldn’t hold the lead and Vanderbilt forced overtime and won the game 96-94.

Trailing by five, Andre Walker somehow made his first 3-pointer of the season. The Dawgs then led by only two, but Dustin Ware was fouled and had two free-throws with 24 seconds remaining. Georgia’s best free-throw shooter at 84% on the year, Ware missed both and left the door open for Vandy. A.J. Ogilvy took the opportunity and scored with 16 seconds remaining.

Mark Fox drew up the Dawgs’ last play, and it was to Travis Leslie who had two tough shots at the basket but missed them both. The Commodores opened up a six point lead in overtime before Georgia could cut it two, with the possibility of a three-point-play, with five seconds remaining. Chris Barnes intentionally missed the free-throw and Dustin Ware grabbed the rebound, but missed the shot with 0.2 seconds remaining. Travis Leslie was able to follow Ware’s miss and make the basket, but it was mere 0.2 seconds after the final buzzer.

The loss is a tough one for the Georgia basketball program, players and fans. The Dawgs were looking for their first road win of the season, but the loss drops them to 0-10 on the road overall and 0-7 in the SEC.

Travis Leslie led five Bulldogs in double-figures with 22 points. He also had 10 rebounds. Trey Thompkins scored 21 points, Dustin Ware 16, Ricky McPhee 14 and Jeremy Price 12.

Georgia faces the Florida Gators at Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 4:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Center David Andrews Commits to the Georgia Bulldogs

Center David Andrews of Norcross, Georgia (Wesleyan) has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. Andrews is the 4th commitment for the Dawgs for 2011.

Andrews (6-2, 275) committed to UGA over offers from Duke and Michigan. He had interest from several other top schools including Alabama, Auburn, East Carolina, Georgia Tech, Michigan State and Vanderbilt.

The Bulldogs also have commitments from linebacker Amarlo Herrera, safety Corey Moore and athlete Chris Sanders.

Georgia Rallies from 13-Point Deficit to Defeat Alabama 76-70

The Bulldogs trailed the Crimson Tide by 13 points with 11:39 to play, but rallied to overcome the deficit and won 76-70. The win improves Georgia to 12-13 overall and 4-8 in the SEC.

Trey Thompkins had a huge game and played almost the whole way for the Dawgs. In 38 minutes, he had 21 points, 17 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Three other Bulldogs scored in double-figures. Travis Leslie had 16 points, Ricky McPhee scored 13 and Chris Barnes added 10.

Dustin Ware scored 7 points, but was held scoreless for almost the entire game. All of his points came in the last two minutes, including a clutch 3-pointer and four free-throws to help seal the victory.

Georgia travels to Nashville to face Vanderbilt on Thursday evening. The game will be televised by ESPNU at 7:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

$11.8 Million Renovation to Stegeman Coliseum Approved

Earlier this month, the University of Georgia Athletic Association’s Board of Directors approved an $11.8 million renovation to Stegeman Coliseum. The renovation will begin on May 12 and will be completed by the start of the 2010-11 UGA basketball season.

Most of the money will go towards the construction of glass walls that reach from the roof of Stegeman down to the ground (see artist rendering below). The glass will form the exterior walls of the coliseum and will create 12,000 square feet of new concourse area.

Restrooms will be added while existing restrooms and concessions will be renovated and reconfigured. This will, according to Damon Evans, add more variety to the concessions that are currently offered.

While the outside undergoes a face lift, the inside of Stegeman will remain the same. After all, it has already seen gradual changes and improvements over the last 12 years. Seating capacity will remain at 10,523.

Three days after the renovation was approved, the Bulldogs upset Vanderbilt at Stegeman. When asked about the coliseum, Mark Fox replied:

“Everyone said when I came we needed a new place. Heck, no, we don’t need a new place. We just need great fans like we had tonight and the right effort.”

Georgia Bulldogs football head coach Mark Richt is 50 years old today. He was born on February 18, 1960 in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mark Richt has been the head coach at UGA for 10 years now. His overall record is 90-27 and he has won two SEC Championships. Richt has also guided the Bulldogs to a 7-2 bowl record.

Georgia Loses to Tennessee, Road Woes Continue

Georgia handled Tennessee last month at home, but couldn’t contain the Volunteers in Knoxville and lost 69-60. The loss drops Georgia to 0-9 on the road this season and 0-6 in the SEC.

Trey Thompkins had a brilliant night with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. But his performance was offset by the ineffectiveness of Travis Leslie who finished the evening with only 4 points and 4 turnovers in 25 minutes played. Leslie picked up two early fouls and missed a good portion of the first half.

The Dawgs held a 29-24 lead at halftime, but Tennessee’s defense stepped up late in the game causing the Bulldogs to turn the ball over and miss several scoring chances. Georgia finished the game with 15 turnovers.

Georgia returns home on Saturday to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 4:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Linebacker Amarlo Herrera of College Park, Georgia (North Clayton High School) has committed to the Georgia Bulldogs. Herrera is the 3rd commitment for the Dawgs for 2011.

Dawgs Exact Revenge on Gamecocks

Georgia avenged a January loss at South Carolina by beating the Gamecocks 66-61 in Athens on Saturday. The win improves the Dawgs’ record to 11-12 overall and 3-7 in the SEC.

Trey Thompkins again led Georgia with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. He was 7-of-16 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Travis Leslie had another great game for the Dawgs with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Oh, and he had another monster dunk or two.

The biggest factor in the game may have been junior Jeremy Price who filled in for Albert Jackson. He scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 33 minutes of play. Five of his points came in succession with under three minutes remaining that gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Georgia trailed 59-53 with 3:46 remaining in the game, but outscored South Carolina 13-2 over the final stretch to win the game.

On Wednesday, Georgia travels to face the no. 12 Tennessee Volunteers (18-6, 6-4 SEC). The Dawgs beat the no. 8 Volunteers 78-63 in January in Athens. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 8:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).

Dawgs Fall to 0-8 on the Road after Loss at Auburn

Georgia’s road woes continued on Wednesday night with a 82-63 defeat at Auburn. Trey Thompkins was ineffective after picking up two fouls in the first ten minutes of the game, and then fouling out with more than eight minutes left.

The loss drops Georgia to 0-8 on the road this season and 0-5 in the SEC.

Thompkins finished his dismal night with six points and six turnovers in only 13 minutes played. Ricky McPhee also had a poor night, shooting only 2-of-9 from three-point range.

Travis Leslie led the struggling Bulldogs with 19 points and 17 rebounds. He was the only bright spot in an otherwise poor display of basketball by the Dawgs. Georgia shot only 36.5% from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times.

The South Carolina Gamecocks visit Stegeman Coliseum on Saturday. The Bulldogs look to avenge their 78-77 loss in Columbia on Jan. 30. The game will be televised by the SEC Network at 4:00 p.m. ET (Buy Tickets).
