Its the April 29, 2013 and the clock’s at 3 AM. I’ve been up all night, I’ve filled up all the required details in the application form a week prior to submission because I know that on the application day, there would be no more than 10 minutes until all the positions are filled up and gone.
I set up a timer on my phone, I place widgets on the home screen of my phone, sticky notes on my mac and alarms with reminders a day before, on the day, 6 hours before and so on.
Today, my sweet friend is in pain, she believes she has the kidney stone, I buy her a herbal medication and a multi-vitamin and print a sheet guiding the steps to reduce pain. She looked like she needed a hug, that smiling face was now crying with pain, if only I could help with anything to get that pain off her. We went to a hospital to get an injection for her pain and we’re back, but the pain still exists. I try my best to help reduce the pain, things like heated ice pads (Why on earth would i heat an ice pad), so i heated a bottle in a bowl and a napkin in boiling water and that some what worked. I dropped her at our friends place and I really hope that she’s fine now, I can’t see her in pain!

Came back home, now I have 3 more hours till the gates open for the lucky 300 people who would get in and successfully acquire the Silver Fern Visa – A Work Search Visa which allows a person to visit the New Zealand in search for a job, and if he/she gets it, he gets 2 more years and so on. I’m interested in New Zealand, the pictures my parents brought back from their trip were ecstatic! So, here I am trying to access the page, I remember earlier I had entered a wrong password 3 times which resulted in my account being locked for 8 hours. I made sure I had the right credentials, I logged in, happy me but to my surprise, the link wasn’t working!
Disappointed I called up the helpline which opens luckily at 9 am, and after waiting for about what felt like half an hour, I got through with a wonderful person. I guess my soft skills worked here, as I was being advised to open a new account and re do everything from the start. I pleaded, and i was put on hold for a while and then all i had to do was click on another link which claimed to do the same and voila!

Now, there’s the server overload, the page returns with errors and I’m refreshing and refreshing! Then yes, the page comes up, I click on continue, then again the page returns dead, then i refresh, I go back I refresh, Page loads, I click on next. The next thing i remember Is a payment dialogue opening up, quickly I grab the credit card and enter the information and bang! I thought It wasn’t done, was it just luck or was it coincidence?

No, I believe, doing good work gets your good stuff in return! So, after i submit my documents, I’ll be in the New Zealand searching for employment and living awesome life! Get well soon dear friend, you’re my lucky charm!

Youth Blood, released in 2009 was loved by many and the smash disco house anthem was given a new treatment in the 12th Planet and Flinch Remix.

Song Analysis

Song Introduction:

This strophic form song has a recurring rise and fall theme contributing to the contrast in its sonic foundation, it
begins with synths and some pitch varied toms. (The intro incorporates the use of an ostinato and then changes slightly)
The kick overpowers the synth (pad) via a sidechained compressor effect. (The intro is a mix between the genres of Trance and House groove.

The use of strategic silence, which gives you a pull back feel (feeling of a ray light getting brighter slowly) followed with the vocals -
“I use my youth blood to get through the night”
A minimalist approach with the rule of “less is more” is at work here, (emphasizing the lyrics.)

The vocals are interesting, with minimal effects and being over the mix, it grabs attention, with some delay, reverb, and stereo widening.

DROP happens at about 00:56 with some steep pitch modulated, stereo widened bass which gives the sound an interesting feel of being “Big”, (using the rise and fall theme here).

1:25 - A a big pause on the build up here giving us a hint of the climax later in this song), the vocal sneaks in again,
with some stutter, cuts and loops in the vocal bits.

1:38 - The bass goes full on, With a chord progression (Shirley can identify the notes..)

1:51 - The song is glued with the synth lead with some fast tremolo.

The melody in the song is the same throughout and changes slightly yet noticibly during the verse breaking the monotony, the bass drops and the the pitch slopes create interest in the mix.

(The climax of this track starts at 2.19 upto 2.33. It may be short as to what one would expect but it does not hold back in the much needed drama brought by a climax in a song)

2:30 - The toms function like glue bringing in fluidity to the mix.

Loops of “I’m a vampire” are audible and the synth and the bass are prominent with some verse with a synth followed with the bass .

3:32 – Delay, and stereo automated panning.

The Drums:

The Arrangement:

Intro – chorus ×2 – (music) – variation – (music) – Verse – climax – chorus – (music) – bridge – (music) – ending(has an ending section leading to an end) on the synth lead tremolo

We spent days analyzing the remix by 12th Planet and Flinch of the Scandanavian vampire Little Jinder. Since its release in 2009, the track “Youthblood” has been going wild in the public and then to add to the fire, the remix fed more blood to the thirst of the vampire.

How to side-chain in Ableton Live

In this tutorial I will be explaining how you can get a side-chain effect by using the stock Compressor plug – in provided in Ableton live 8. Side-chaining is used by producers to achieve multiple effects and or to bring out a certain instrument / frequency based on another input. Sounds confusing? It’ll get really simple in the following steps:

Aim:

Notice in the audio file above, how the white noise ducks and comes back as the kick comes in and out of the sound, this is what we wish to achieve.

Lets Start!

1: In this particular example, we’re dealing with 2 different tracks, so go ahead and create 2 new audio tracks in Ableton live. (Cmd+T)

In the image above, we can see the

1: Drums Track [Its a comb].

I’ve used the Drum Rack which comes by default in Live as the kick, The sample used in this example is from one of a recording sessions.
2: White Noise:
The White Noise was bounced via re-routing the signal from operator onto a new track and recording it, I did this for utilizing minimal system resources.

Step 1:
Apply a compressor on the White Noise:
In the compressor my settings are not as per any rule, I simply adjust to flavor, you can create automations in the compression ratio and attack and release times to get some interesting sounding white noise.
Step 2: Enable Side-chaining:
Make sure you click on the small triangle right next to the On / Off button on the top right of the compressor window, by doing this you are now enabling the side chaining feature of the compressor. In the Audio From drop down selection menu, make sure you select the kick, in this example, I’ve chosen the Drum rack and the Post FX signal, you can choose pre-FX as it effects the transient effect based on the reverb or drum compression if any applied.

Step 3: Attack and Release:

Next, you set the attack and release times, in this example I’ve set the attack to 0.01 ms and the release to 97 ms.

Step 4: Set the threshold:

Bring the threshold down, until you hear the white noise sort of jumping to and fro based on the kick.

Step 5: Adjust the Ratio:
Change the compression ratio as per your flavor, I have set it to around 5:00 in this example.

Final White Noise:
This is how the white noise should sound after all these settings have been applied:

Viola! And you have your side-chained white noise ready!

Extra:

You can apply Some equalization to the white noise and automate it as the song progresses to add some fluidity to the composition.
Add some delay to the white noise to give it more dimension
