sigur rós have been nominated for “best festival headline act” at this years uk festival awards. they are up against the likes of sex pistols, jay z, the verve, metallica and kiss. you can vote for sigur rós, if you want to of course, by going to this page. voting closes on october the 20th, with the winners being announced on the 30th.

deluxe edition update

for those wondering about the progress of the deluxe edition of með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust then today brings news of an update.

thank you to everyone for your prolonged patience in sticking around for your copy of the luxurious version of ‘með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. we appreciate it’s been a tad frustrating, since we originally figured you’d all have it about now. but the good news is the calendar watching is about to come to an end. we’ve seen, and held in our hands, an early proof copy of the book, so we can tell that (a) it exists, and (b) it’s turned out a-mazing!

the books are now printed and going through the fiddly production finishing process of inserting the cd, dvd and 16mm film strip into the inside front and back covers. aside from these modest delays, the main reason for you having to hang on a bit longer was - perhaps inevitably - editing delays with the exclusive film, now entitled vid spilum endalaust’.

having made ‘heima’ previously, we should maybe have known that it always takes a little longer to assemble footage into something that feels like a cohesive project so it was with vid spilum endaluast’. we shot the whole thing on a combination of super-8 and dv tape; the former having a great look but no audio track, and the dv useful for picking up dialogue and sound ambience. anyway we dicked around with the resulting footage trying to juxtapose the two competing formats for ages, before deciding to dispense with the digital output and concentrate pretty much wholly on the 8mm film stock.

this took time and put us back in terms of delivery of finished dvds. we’ve got to say sorry for this, but feel that the wait is more than compensated by the fact that the resultant ‘film poem” is in fact supremely good - by our insider opinion a good deal closer to what it set out to be than ‘heima’ even. we hope you agree.

new delivery dates will be between the 17th and 31 st october depending on where you live.

svefn-g-englar in top 5 videos

further to the poll run by mtv uk last month, it has been announced that the video for svefn-g-englar is the fifth best video ever made. it comes in behind “rio” by duran duran, “all is full of love” by björk, “take on me” by a-ha and “thriller” by michael jackson. the full list is here. (we’re slightly shocked by the poor showing of one video in particular)

exhibition in london

on october 2nd there will be an exhibition of 12 prints from the ‘með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust’ album deluxe edition by eva vermandel and a taster of the film made by nick abrahams. the exhibition takes place at the whitechapel gallery in london as part of the concrete and glass event. concrete and glass’s inaugural music and contemporary art event held across 18 venues in shoreditch will also play host to some of the most outstanding new and established artists london has to offer.

sigur rós will start their north america tour tonight in new york city. the tour’s 17 shows are mostly sold out but tickets are still available to a few shows. for the first time in america since 2001 the band will be playing completely on their own, without the support of amiina and the horny brasstards. the opening act for this tour is jónsi’s boyfriend’s band parachutes. as always, reviews are welcome.

sunday times feature

the sunday times are running an interesting feature on sigur rós with a competition to win two tickets to the alexandra palace concert in london, as well as a chance to see the soundcheck prior to the concert. the feature also has two recent live videos, one from iceland (playing gobbledigook with björk) and one from westminster methodist central hall (playing inní mér syngur vitleysingur).

inní mér syngur vitleysingur is the first single from með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. it will be released in the uk only this coming monday, september 8th, on cd and as a 2-track download. the single’s b-side is heima, an acoustic song which the band played at some screenings of the film heima last year.

gobbledigook competition

sigur rós have set up a gobbledigook remix competition on youtube. they’ve provided an instrumental mp3 of gobbledigook and the icelandic and english lyrics for you to use in the remix in any way you please. the “most gratifying” entry as judged by the band will receive a signed copy of the deluxe edition of með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. head over here for all the details on the competition.

new concerts announced

two new concerts have been announced for the autumn. in october there will be a second gig in tokyo and in november there will be a gig in glasgow. information is available on our tour page.
