So it seems that I’m the first work placement student asked to write something for the blog, and what better opportunity than being left alone in the office whilst all the staff have gone to Mersea for a day of outdoor activities! We had a lovely start to the day with bacon and croissants in the courtyard, something I certainly didn’t expect on a work placement as well as the relaxed feeling of being among a group of people who have made me feel so welcome these past three weeks.

Before I started here at Silk Pearce, I was worried that I would be given work to do in areas where I was lacking in confidence, and it turns out that publishing layout and website design are just those areas! I’ve had lots of honest advice and support from everyone here and feel I have learnt so much (having previously thought I knew my stuff when it came to InDesign)!

I think the first placement for any undergraduate is always going to be a daunting and nerve-racking experience. One imagines being a slave to the kettle and the Spray Mount booth, watching on as the ‘real-life’ designers get stuck into their complicated computer programs whilst pitching to clients and quoting Wally Olins. My experience at Silk Pearce has been far from this scary vision in all respects; tea making is shared and I haven’t even seen the Spray Mount booth!

Thank you to Andrew for his invaluable help with the website design and Andrea, Rob and Ian for their guidance and patience with my questions and making sure I’m alright. Lastly, a huge thank you to Peter and Jack and everyone else at Silk Pearce for having me here and involving me in the brilliant work they do. I hope we can keep in touch!

Clare

Released on 17th March, notably St. Patrick’s Day! this PNC pack that we designed for the Royal Mail (in collaboration with the Royal Mint), celebrates the rich and varied history of Belfast, Northern Ireland. The pack consists of an envelope housing a four page information card full of historical detail, researched and written by us. We also designed the cancellation mark and label which sits with the pre-existing country Definitive stamp of NI. The red and blue colour treatment on the card is taken from the flag of Belfast.
