Does Holiday Let Photography Affect Your Devon Booking Rate?

Quick Summary

Professional holiday let photography directly affects Devon booking rates — industry research consistently points to higher enquiries, stronger nightly rates and fewer void weeks after a professional reshoot. With 34 years of commercial photography experience and long-standing work for Hoseasons, Rural Retreats and Sykes Cottages across Devon, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when a property gets properly photographed — and what happens when it doesn’t.

The question I get most often from Devon holiday let owners isn’t “what will the shoot cost?” It’s “will it actually make a difference?”

The honest answer: it depends on what you’re starting from. But in most cases — yes, measurably so.

I’m Simon Plant, and I’ve been photographing holiday lets across Devon for Hoseasons, Rural Retreats and Sykes Cottages for over 20 years. I’ve watched the same properties before and after a professional shoot, and the pattern is consistent enough to be worth understanding.

What Your Listing Photographs Are Actually Doing

When someone searches for a holiday let in Devon — on Airbnb, Sykes, Hoseasons, or direct — they’re not reading your description first. They’re looking at the thumbnail. If that thumbnail doesn’t stop the scroll, the rest of your listing doesn’t exist.

Your photographs are doing a job before you even know a potential guest is looking. They’re communicating quality, value and trust — and most importantly, whether this property is worth clicking on.

Most owners understand this in principle. Fewer realise how direct the impact is.

What the Evidence Suggests

Industry data on this is consistent in direction, if not always precise in figure. Research cited by major booking platforms and rental management companies points to professionally photographed listings receiving significantly more bookings than equivalent properties with amateur images — with some studies suggesting uplifts of 20% or more. Higher nightly rates for the same quality of property are also consistently reported.

The mechanism is straightforward enough that it doesn’t need a precise percentage to be convincing: more clicks lead to more bookings, and better photographs produce more clicks. What’s harder to quantify — but equally real — is the compounding effect over a full season of reduced voids and improved platform ranking from higher engagement rates.

What Changes After a Professional Shoot

The most obvious change is the images themselves — brighter, better composed, more flattering to the space. But the downstream effects are what owners actually care about.

Fewer void weeks. When a property looks compelling in the listing, it books faster. Reduced voids across even a moderate Devon season represent significant additional revenue — often multiples of what the photography cost.

Higher nightly rate acceptance. Guests browsing premium listings are self-selecting. When your photographs look as good as a £1,200/week property, you can ask closer to £1,200/week. When they look like someone’s phone snaps, you’re anchoring yourself to the lower end of the range whether you intend to or not.

Better platform ranking. Airbnb, Booking.com and aggregators like Sykes all factor engagement into their algorithms. Higher click-through rates — which better photographs produce — improve your visibility over time. The photography investment compounds.

The Devon Market Specifically

Devon is a competitive market with very different property types across the county.

North Devon — Woolacombe, Croyde, Westward Ho — tends towards family and surfer-friendly properties where lifestyle photography matters as much as interiors. The beaches are part of the product, and images that show proximity to them perform better than interior-only shoots.

South Devon — Salcombe, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge — skews towards premium clientele where detail and finish matter more: the quality of the kitchen, the view from the sitting room, the morning light across the estuary.

Dartmoor properties are different again. Cosiness, authenticity and winter bookability are the key signals. A well-shot log burner in October can drive spring bookings from guests already planning their winter escape.

Understanding which property you’re photographing, and which market you’re photographing for, shapes every decision on a shoot.

When to Consider a Reshoot

If your Devon holiday let was last photographed more than three years ago, or was shot with a phone or by a non-specialist, it’s worth reviewing. Indicators that photography may be affecting performance:

Good reviews but low click-through rates

Discounting to fill voids that comparable nearby properties aren’t discounting

Improvements or refurbishments not reflected in current images

Photographs that don’t show the property in its best light — literally

A reshoot timed for late winter maximises the return window before the main booking season.

What the Shoot Covers

For Devon holiday let photography I cover the full property: every bookable room, key outdoor spaces, proximity shots where relevant, and feature details that distinguish the property. Where staging matters — and it frequently does — I work through that with owners before we start.

For properties where drone photography adds genuine value (coastal overviews, large grounds, distinctive location context), aerial and interior work can be combined in a single visit.

What Actually Makes a Corporate Headshot Work? An Exeter Photographer Explains

Quick Summary

A good corporate headshot isn’t just about a decent camera and a plain background. It’s about directing people who aren’t used to being photographed, understanding what different industries need visually, and having the technical skill to make it all come together in fifteen minutes. With 34 years of commercial photography experience, I work with Exeter businesses to produce headshots that actually do their job.

Most people approach a corporate headshot session with some version of the same thought: stand in front of a camera, smile, done. And most people come away from a poorly run session with an image that looks exactly like that — stiff, slightly uncomfortable, not quite right.

The difference between a headshot that works and one that doesn’t rarely comes down to the camera or the lighting setup. It comes down to what happens between the photographer and the person being photographed in the ten or fifteen minutes they’re together.

Why Most People Are Uncomfortable in Front of a Camera

It’s worth being direct about this: the majority of people being photographed for a corporate headshot don’t want to be there. Not because they’re difficult — because being photographed feels exposing in a way that most other professional activities don’t.

You can’t fake your way through it. You can’t hide behind a document or a presentation. It’s just you, a camera, and whatever expression you happen to be wearing at the moment the shutter fires. For most people, that awareness produces exactly the expression you don’t want — tense, slightly glazed, performing a version of themselves rather than actually being themselves.

A photographer who doesn’t acknowledge this, who just points the camera and fires, will get a technically competent image of someone who looks like they’re enduring something. That’s not a headshot that builds trust or communicates capability. It’s a headshot that gets replaced as soon as possible.

What Good Direction Actually Looks Like

Getting natural results from people who aren’t natural in front of a camera is a skill, and it’s one that develops over years rather than months.

It starts before the camera comes out — in how the session is set up, how the brief is explained, how much time is given to settle before anything is expected. People who feel rushed produce rushed-looking images.

It continues in the way the shoot is directed. Telling someone to “relax” is useless. Giving them something specific to do — a slight adjustment to their posture, a particular thing to think about, a natural reason to produce the expression you’re looking for — is how you actually get there. The best headshots look uncontrived because the photographer worked hard to make them look that way.

It also means reading people quickly. Some people need more time. Some need to be kept moving so they don’t overthink. Some respond to conversation, some to silence. Part of 34 years of commercial experience is recognising which approach is needed and adapting accordingly — often within the first two minutes of meeting someone.

What Different Industries Need

A headshot for a Exeter-based solicitor should feel different from a headshot for a technology startup founder, which should feel different from a headshot for a creative director. Not dramatically different — the fundamentals of a good portrait don’t change — but different in tone, in how approachable versus authoritative the image feels, in how much personality is showing.

Professional services — law, finance, accountancy: The image needs to communicate trustworthiness and competence first. Warmth is important but it sits behind credibility. The expression, the posture, the background — everything should feel considered and stable.

Technology and digital: More latitude for personality. These sectors are less formal and their audiences expect imagery that reflects that. A headshot that’s too stiff will feel out of place on a tech company’s about page.

Creative industries: The headshot itself can communicate something about creative sensibility. More flexibility on background, on crop, on expression — but it still needs to work professionally, not just look interesting.

Healthcare and education: Approachability is primary. These are sectors where the person in the photograph needs to feel accessible and trustworthy to a potentially anxious audience.

Getting this right requires understanding the sector before the session starts — knowing what the image needs to achieve and directing accordingly.

The Technical Side That People Don’t See

Behind the direction and the people-management, there’s a technical job that also needs to be right.

Lighting that flatters without flattening — that creates enough dimension to make the image feel three-dimensional without producing shadows that distract or harsh highlights that age. A lens choice and shooting distance that produce natural-looking proportions rather than the slight distortion that cheaper setups often introduce. A background that works for the brand context without competing with the subject.

And then retouching that enhances without obviously altering — the kind of retouching where the finished image looks like the best version of the person, not a different person entirely. This is a more common problem than it should be, and it’s one that clients don’t always notice until they see the image sitting next to colleagues who’ve been handled more naturally.

All of this needs to be consistent across every person photographed — whether that’s two people or two hundred, whether they’re photographed in the same session or across visits months apart.

What Exeter Businesses Actually Need from a Commercial Photographer

Quick Summary

Exeter has a diverse and growing business base — from professional services and technology firms to food and drink producers, retail, construction and higher education. What each sector needs from commercial photography is different, and getting it right requires experience across all of them. With 34 years of commercial photography experience, I work with Exeter businesses to produce imagery that does a specific commercial job, not just fill a website gallery.

Exeter is no longer just a regional market town with a cathedral. It’s one of the fastest-growing cities in the South West, with a business community that spans professional services, technology, higher education, food and drink, construction, retail and more. Each of those sectors has different visual communication needs — and a commercial photographer who understands those differences is worth considerably more than one who doesn’t.

Here’s what the main sectors actually need, and why it matters.

Professional Services — Law, Finance, Consultancy

For professional services firms in Exeter, photography has one primary job: building trust before a conversation has even started.

Prospective clients visiting your website or LinkedIn page are making a rapid judgement about whether you’re the kind of organisation they’d feel comfortable handing a significant problem to. Generic stock photography immediately undermines that — it signals that you haven’t invested in presenting yourselves properly, which raises an obvious question about how you approach everything else.

What professional services firms need is genuine imagery: real people, real offices, real working environments. Team photography that shows the actual people a client will deal with. Environmental portraits that feel considered rather than staged. Images that communicate competence and approachability without trying too hard at either.

This also means headshots that are consistent across the whole team — not a collection of images taken at different times by different photographers with different approaches. Consistency is itself a signal of professionalism.

Technology and Digital Businesses

Exeter’s technology sector has grown significantly, and it presents a specific photographic challenge: how do you make inherently invisible work look visually interesting and credible?

Software, data, digital services — none of it photographs itself. What you’re actually photographing is the environment, the people and the culture. The challenge is to make that feel authentic rather than generic — to avoid the clichés of people pointing at screens and staged “collaboration” shots that fool nobody.

Good technology sector photography shows real teams in real spaces doing real work. It requires a photographer who’s comfortable working in live office environments, who can get natural results from people who aren’t used to being photographed, and who understands what the images need to communicate to a technically literate audience.

Food and Drink

Exeter and the surrounding area has a strong food and drink sector — independent producers, restaurants, cafés, craft breweries, farm shops and more. This is one of the most technically demanding areas of commercial photography, and also one where the gap between average and excellent is most immediately visible.

Food photography requires controlled lighting, an understanding of how different foods behave on camera, and the ability to work quickly before things wilt, melt or lose their appeal. It also requires an understanding of the brand context — photography for a premium Devon producer should feel very different from photography for a fast-casual restaurant chain, even if the technical requirements are similar.

Beyond the food itself, businesses in this sector typically need environmental photography of their production facilities, retail spaces or venues — imagery that tells the full story of what they do and where they do it.

Construction, Property and Development

Exeter has seen significant development activity, and construction and property businesses need photography that documents progress, showcases completed work and supports planning and marketing activity.

This ranges from straightforward site documentation — regular progress photography that creates a visual record of a project — through to high-end architectural photography of completed developments for marketing and award submissions. Aerial photography adds a further dimension for larger sites where scale and context matter.

The requirement here is reliability as much as quality: turning up on time, working safely on site, delivering consistent results that slot into ongoing project documentation without creating extra work.

Higher Education and Research

Exeter is home to a significant university and a broader research and education community. Photography for this sector covers everything from academic portrait photography and event coverage through to research documentation and marketing imagery for student recruitment.

Student recruitment photography in particular needs to feel genuine — prospective students are highly attuned to imagery that feels manufactured, and authentic photography of real campus life and real academic environments is considerably more effective than anything that looks too polished or too staged.

What All of This Has in Common

Across all of these sectors, the underlying requirement is the same: photography that understands the commercial context it’s working in, and delivers images that do a specific job rather than simply looking nice.

That requires experience across a range of commercial environments, the technical ability to handle different shooting conditions, and the judgement to know what each brief actually needs — even when the client hasn’t fully articulated it themselves.

Why Large Businesses Need a Planned Approach to Corporate Headshots in Somerset

Quick Summary

For businesses with more than a handful of staff, corporate headshots aren’t a one-off job — they’re an ongoing brand asset that needs to be managed properly. A repeatable, consistent approach across multiple visits is the only way to maintain a cohesive professional look as teams grow and change. With 34 years of commercial photography experience across Somerset, I work with businesses to get this right from the start.

A single LinkedIn profile photo might seem like a small thing. But multiply it across a team of thirty, fifty or a hundred people — photographed at different times, by different photographers, in different locations with different lighting — and what you end up with is a visual mess that quietly undermines the professional brand you’re trying to build.

This is one of the most common and most avoidable problems in corporate photography, and it’s almost always the result of not thinking about headshots as a system rather than a series of individual jobs.

Why LinkedIn Makes This More Important Than Ever

Before LinkedIn, a company’s team page might get a handful of visits from prospective clients or recruits doing due diligence. Now, individual employees are discoverable and visible in ways that simply didn’t exist fifteen years ago.

A prospective client will look at your LinkedIn company page. They’ll click through to the profiles of the people they’re likely to deal with. A recruit will do the same. An investor, a partner, a journalist — all of them are forming an impression of your business based partly on how your people present themselves visually online.

When those images are inconsistent — some professional, some clearly taken on a phone, some years out of date, some with wildly different backgrounds, crops and lighting — it signals a lack of attention to detail that extends, in the viewer’s mind, to everything else about how you run your business.

When they’re consistent — same quality, same feel, same professional standard — they communicate something quite different: that this is an organisation that takes its brand seriously.

The Multi-Visit Challenge

Here’s the practical reality for any business with a significant headcount: you will never get everyone in the same room on the same day.

There’s always someone on leave. Someone working remotely. Someone who joined last month. Someone who’s due to join next month. A senior person who genuinely can’t make the scheduled day and needs a separate slot.

For smaller businesses — say up to fifteen or twenty people — a single well-planned session usually works. For anything larger, you’re almost certainly looking at multiple visits, and that’s where the consistency challenge becomes critical.

If visit two happens six months after visit one and something has changed — the lighting setup, the background, the crop ratio, the post-processing approach — the images from the two sessions won’t match. Put them on the same team page and it shows immediately.

What a Repeatable Approach Actually Means

Solving this isn’t complicated, but it does require forethought.

Technical consistency: The same lighting setup, the same lens, the same shooting distance, the same background — documented and replicable across every visit, whether that’s two weeks or two years apart.

Processing consistency: The same retouching approach, the same colour treatment, the same file output specifications. An image from session one and an image from session four should be indistinguishable in style.

Briefing consistency: Every participant gets the same guidance on what to wear, how to prepare, what to expect. This is particularly important for businesses with staff across multiple locations or departments — the person in the Bristol office needs to arrive as prepared as the person in the Taunton head office.

Crop and format consistency: The same aspect ratio, the same head-to-frame proportion, the same amount of headroom. These details matter enormously when images sit side by side on a team page or a company LinkedIn profile.

Getting all of this right on the first visit and then replicating it reliably is the difference between a headshot programme that works as a brand asset and one that gradually becomes a problem as the team evolves.

Planning a Corporate Headshot Programme

For businesses across Somerset — whether you’re based in Taunton, Yeovil, Bridgwater, Frome or anywhere else in the county — the starting point is a conversation about scale and logistics before anyone picks up a camera.

How many people? Across how many locations? What’s the likely growth rate — how many new starters are you expecting over the next twelve months? What’s the existing photography situation — are you starting from scratch or trying to bring a chaotic existing set of images up to a consistent standard?

From there, we plan the session structure: how many visits, how long per person (typically ten to fifteen minutes for a straightforward headshot), how to handle the inevitable no-shows and late additions, and what the ongoing refresh process looks like.

The goal is a headshot programme that you barely have to think about — new starter joins, we schedule a slot, they’re photographed to exactly the same standard as everyone else, the image drops into your team page and it looks like it was always there.

Commercial photography covers everything a business needs to communicate visually — from product and industrial photography to corporate lifestyle, team portraits and marketing imagery. With 34 years of commercial experience working with businesses across Somerset and into Exeter, I handle the full range. If it needs to represent your business professionally, it falls under commercial photography.

Ask ten people what a commercial photographer does and you’ll get ten different answers. Some will say product shots. Others will think advertising. A few will mention corporate headshots. They’re all right — and that’s exactly the point.

Commercial photography is an umbrella term for any photography commissioned by a business for a commercial purpose. The variety is considerable, and understanding what sits under that umbrella is the first step in knowing what you actually need.

What Commercial Photography Covers

Product Photography

The most immediately recognisable category. If your business makes or sells a physical product, you need photography that shows it clearly, accurately and compellingly — whether that’s for a website, catalogue, Amazon listing or trade press.

Somerset has a strong manufacturing base, and I work regularly with businesses that need product photography done properly. That means controlled lighting, accurate colour representation and images that hold up at the sizes and contexts they’ll actually be used.

Industrial and Manufacturing Photography

This is a specialism that requires both technical photographic skill and an understanding of industrial environments. The challenge isn’t just getting a clean shot — it’s documenting a process, a facility or a team in a way that tells the right story for clients, investors or internal communications.

I’ve worked with some of Somerset’s best-known manufacturers, including Numatic International — makers of the Henry Hoover — and Clarks Shoes, both long-established businesses with serious visual communication requirements. This kind of work demands experience; you can’t learn industrial photography by reading about it.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2000" height="1334" src="https://simonplant.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/2021-03-02-J2058-PrTx-0012.jpg" alt="Technical industrial photography of a manufacturing assembly line in Somerset.

Corporate Lifestyle and Team Photography

Beyond headshots, businesses need imagery that shows their people at work — genuine, natural photographs that communicate culture, capability and environment. This is particularly important for recruitment, investor relations and brand-building content.

The difference between a staged corporate lifestyle shot and a good one is whether it feels real. After 34 years, I know how to get natural results from people who aren’t natural in front of a camera.

Corporate Headshots

Individual and team portraits for websites, LinkedIn, press releases and internal directories. A straightforward brief on paper, but the quality gap between average and excellent is significant — and it shows immediately on a professional profile.

Marketing and Brand Photography

Campaign imagery, social media content, editorial work for trade and consumer press. I’ve had work published in Somerset Life and Country Life, which gives some sense of the standard this kind of photography needs to meet.

Events and Conferences

Coverage of product launches, conferences, awards evenings and corporate hospitality — the kind of event photography that produces usable images rather than just a record of who was in the room.

Covering Somerset and Into Exeter

My base is in Somerset, and I cover the full county — Taunton, Yeovil, Bridgwater, Chard, Glastonbury, Frome, Wells and everywhere between. I also work regularly into Exeter and across Devon and Dorset for clients who need consistent quality across multiple sites or locations.

For businesses with operations across the South West, having a single photographer who knows the region and can move between locations without logistical drama is a genuine practical advantage.

Why Authentic Photography Matters More Than Ever

This is worth addressing directly, because it’s a conversation that’s happening in almost every industry right now.

AI-generated imagery has arrived, and it’s capable of producing convincing visuals quickly and cheaply. For some applications — conceptual illustration, mood boarding, certain marketing contexts — it has genuine utility. But for commercial photography in specific industries and contexts, real photography isn’t just preferable. It’s necessary.

Manufacturing and production: If you’re showing a client, investor or regulator your facility, your process or your output, AI imagery is not an option. The image needs to be verifiable. It needs to show what actually exists. Trust in industrial and B2B contexts is built on proof, not illustration.

Professional services: Law firms, financial advisers, consultancies, healthcare businesses — sectors where trust is the product. A prospective client looking at your website is making a judgement about whether to trust you with something that matters. Stock photography already feels generic. AI-generated imagery, when identified, actively damages credibility. Real photography of real people in real environments is the only thing that does the job properly.

Food and hospitality: Authenticity of representation is increasingly a regulatory and consumer expectation. Showing food or facilities as they actually are is both a legal and commercial requirement.

Any business where proof of work matters: Construction, engineering, environmental services, agriculture — sectors where the photograph is evidence. AI can’t provide that.

The broader point is this: as AI imagery becomes more common, the value of demonstrably real photography increases. Businesses that invest in authentic visual content now are building a credibility asset that will appreciate as audiences become more sceptical of what they’re seeing online.

Quick Summary

Professional holiday let photography in North Devon isn’t just about pointing a camera at a room — it’s about selling a lifestyle. Since around 2019, propped and staged shoots have become the industry norm, and owners who skip this step are losing bookings to properties that get it right. With 34 years of commercial photography experience, I work with holiday let owners across Woolacombe, Westward Ho, Croyde and the wider North Devon coast to create images that fill calendars.

If you own a holiday let in North Devon, you already know the market is competitive. Woolacombe and Westward Ho alone have hundreds of properties listed on platforms like Airbnb, Sykes Cottages and Hoseasons. The question isn’t whether your property is good enough — it’s whether your photography makes it look that way.

That’s where staging comes in.

What Changed Around 2019

Before around 2019, most holiday let photography was relatively straightforward: turn up, shoot the rooms, deliver the files. A clean, well-lit image of a bedroom or kitchen was considered sufficient.

That changed as the short-term rental market matured and platform algorithms began rewarding higher-performing listings. Properties with stronger click-through rates got better placement. Properties with better placement got more bookings. And the properties getting the clicks? They were the ones that looked like somewhere you actually wanted to spend a week.

The platforms noticed. The major letting agents noticed. And gradually, staged and propped photography became the benchmark — not a premium add-on, but the expected standard for any listing serious about competing.

Today, if your photography looks like someone cleared the washing up and grabbed a wide-angle shot, you’re already behind.

Selling a Lifestyle, Not Just a Room

This is the core shift in thinking that makes the difference.

A photograph of a kitchen shows a kitchen. A photograph of a kitchen with a cafetière on the counter, a couple of croissants on a board, morning light coming through the window and a coastal view just visible through the glass — that sells a morning in North Devon.

Guests booking a holiday let aren’t just looking for somewhere to sleep. They’re imagining the experience: the lazy breakfasts, the evening glass of wine on the terrace, the kids piling in from the beach. Great photography gives them that imagination. It lets them place themselves in the property before they’ve booked.

This is what propping achieves. It’s not about making the property look like something it isn’t — it’s about showing it at its best and giving the viewer the emotional context to say yes, that’s where I want to be.

What Good Propping Looks Like in Practice

Kitchen and dining areas: Fresh flowers, fruit bowls, artisan coffee, laid table settings, local produce

Living spaces: Throws, cushions arranged naturally (not stiffly), books, candles — warmth without clutter

Bedrooms: Crisp linen, a tray with a cafetière and cups, bedside reading — the hotel feeling guests are paying for

Outdoor spaces: Laid table, wine glasses, a blanket on the chair — the evening they’re imagining

Bathrooms: Rolled towels, quality toiletries, a plant if there’s light — clean and considered

None of this needs to be expensive. The skill is in knowing what reads well on camera and what creates the feeling the image needs to deliver.

Why This Matters More in North Devon

North Devon — and particularly the Woolacombe and Westward Ho stretch of coastline — attracts guests with high expectations. These aren’t budget travellers grabbing the cheapest option. They’re families planning a significant annual holiday, couples booking a weekend retreat, groups celebrating something. They’re spending real money and they’re choosing based on what they see.

That means your photography is doing serious commercial work. A well-staged shoot doesn’t just look nicer — it justifies a higher nightly rate, attracts the guests most likely to look after the property, and reduces the gap between peak and shoulder season bookings.

I shoot regularly across the North Devon coast — Woolacombe, Westward Ho, Croyde, Braunton and further inland — and the difference in listing performance between staged and unstaged properties is consistent and significant.

How a Propped Shoot Works

If you haven’t done a propped shoot before, here’s what to expect:

Before the shoot: I’ll discuss the property with you and agree what props and styling are needed. For most holiday lets, you’ll already have most of what’s needed — I’ll advise on what to have ready and what’s worth buying.

On the day: I arrive with time built in for styling each room before shooting. This isn’t a quick walk-through — each space gets proper attention to make sure it reads correctly on camera.

The result: A full set of images showing the property at its lifestyle best — the kind of photography that works on Airbnb, on your own website, in letting agent brochures and across social media.

The Problem With AI Headshots (And Why Exeter Professionals Are Noticing)

Quick Summary

AI-generated and AI-enhanced headshots are increasingly common on LinkedIn and professional websites — and increasingly easy to spot. For Exeter’s professional community, where credibility and trust are foundational to business development, a headshot that looks generated or heavily processed undermines the impression you’re trying to create. Professional corporate headshots from a photographer with 34 years of commercial experience deliver something an algorithm can’t: a photograph of you, looking like you, that people can actually trust.

LinkedIn’s AI headshot tools have been downloaded millions of times. The appeal is obvious — professional-looking portraits without the cost or inconvenience of a photographer. Upload a handful of selfies, wait a few minutes, and you have a polished profile image.

The problem is that anyone who looks at professional headshots regularly can now spot them reliably. And in Exeter’s professional services community — where decisions get made based on trust long before a first meeting — that’s a reputational problem worth taking seriously.

Why AI Headshots Are Easy to Identify

The tells are consistent enough that they’ve become shorthand among marketing and HR professionals: skin that’s unnaturally smooth, eyes that carry a slightly vacant quality, hair that behaves too perfectly, ears that don’t quite resolve correctly, backgrounds that look like no office that actually exists. The overall effect is of a person who could theoretically exist but demonstrably doesn’t in that photograph.

More subtly, AI-generated headshots tend to converge toward an idealised version of professional appearance — which paradoxically makes them less distinctive and less memorable than a well-taken real photograph. The goal of a professional headshot is to be recognised, trusted, and remembered. An AI-generated image that looks like dozens of others achieves none of those things effectively.

There’s also a more direct issue for client-facing professionals. When someone books a meeting with you based on your LinkedIn profile, and then meets you in person, the gap between a generated image and your actual appearance can be jarring enough to register. That’s not a good start to a professional relationship.

The Trust Stakes Are Higher for Some Sectors Than Others

Not every professional context carries the same stakes, but Exeter has a high concentration of the sectors where this matters most.

Legal and financial services. Clients instructing solicitors, engaging financial advisers, or working with accountants are making decisions based substantially on trust in the individual. Your headshot is often the first representation of you they encounter. A generated image carries an implicit question: if this person is willing to misrepresent their appearance, what else might be approximate?

Consulting and professional advisory. New business development in consulting is almost entirely relationship-driven. Your LinkedIn presence is a significant part of how you’re evaluated before initial contact. A convincingly professional but clearly generated headshot tends to register as a yellow flag among experienced buyers of professional services.

Technology and SaaS. Exeter has a growing technology sector, and the irony of a tech professional using AI imagery that’s detectable as AI isn’t lost on informed observers. It can read as a signal of cut corners rather than technical sophistication.

Senior leadership and board-level. For anyone whose headshot appears in annual reports, investor communications, media coverage, or formal company documentation, the photography has to be unambiguously real. Generated imagery in formal corporate contexts is straightforwardly inappropriate.

What a Professional Corporate Headshot Actually Delivers

A well-executed corporate headshot isn’t just a picture of your face. Done properly, it communicates several things simultaneously: that you’re serious about your professional presentation, that you’re confident enough to be photographed accurately rather than generated approximately, and that you look like someone worth meeting.

The practical logistics are less intimidating than many people expect. I bring portable studio equipment to your premises, which means no travel, no unfamiliar location, and no disruption to your working day beyond the session itself. For teams, I can work through a group efficiently with consistent results across all participants — which matters for websites and LinkedIn where inconsistent headshots across a team create an impression of organisational inconsistency.

The images are yours to use across LinkedIn, company website, press materials, speaker profiles, and internal communications. A properly done set of corporate headshots typically remains relevant for three to four years before an update is needed, which puts the investment in reasonable perspective.

A Note on AI Enhancement vs AI Generation

There’s a distinction worth making. Professional photographers routinely use software — including AI-assisted tools — for retouching: removing a temporary blemish, adjusting lighting, ensuring colour accuracy. That’s standard post-processing and it produces a real photograph of a real person, refined rather than fabricated.

What AI headshot tools do is different: they generate an image based on your inputs, producing something that resembles you but isn’t actually a photograph of you in any meaningful sense. The output is a simulation, not a record.

For professional contexts where the headshot functions as part of your credibility, that distinction matters.

Corporate Headshots for Exeter Professionals

I’m Simon Plant, based in Somerset and working regularly throughout Exeter and East Devon. With 34 years of commercial photography experience, I’ve photographed individuals and teams for clients including Mimecast, Clarks Shoes, and Oxford University Press — businesses where professional presentation has to hold up under scrutiny.

If you’re an individual professional, a growing firm, or an established Exeter business due a headshot refresh, I’m happy to discuss what would work best for your situation.

Quick Summary

Professional commercial photography in Exeter builds the business credibility that AI-generated imagery simply cannot. When B2B clients are evaluating whether to trust you with their operations, finances, or data, they need to see your real people, real premises, and real work. With 34 years of commercial photography experience working with clients including Mimecast, Clarks Shoes, and the Environment Agency, I provide photography that evidences rather than decorates.

AI image generation has genuinely changed what’s possible in visual content. For concept work, mood boards, and generic marketing decoration, it has real uses — and anyone who dismisses it wholesale hasn’t been paying attention to how rapidly the technology has improved.

But there’s a category of commercial photography where “impressive-looking” is nowhere near enough. And for a significant share of Exeter’s business community, that’s exactly the category they’re operating in.

Exeter’s Business Landscape Is B2B

Exeter’s commercial scene is built substantially on professional services — legal firms, accountants, financial advisers, management consultants, technology companies, healthcare businesses, and professional training providers. It has a strong university presence that feeds into research, professional services, and knowledge-based industries. The Met Office, major law firms, regional banks, and national companies with Exeter offices all share something in common.

They sell trust.

Not a product you can hold. Not a service you can trial for free. They’re asking prospects to commit significant budgets, hand over sensitive data, or make decisions that affect their organisations. In that context, your visual presentation matters in a way that goes well beyond aesthetics.

A potential client visiting your website, reviewing your proposal, or checking your LinkedIn before a significant meeting is doing due diligence as much as browsing. What they see either builds confidence or erodes it.

What AI Imagery Can’t Do for B2B Trust

AI-generated imagery is, by definition, a picture of something that doesn’t exist. It can be beautiful. It can be polished. It can look entirely professional to a casual eye. But it evidences nothing.

For Exeter businesses in professional services, technology, and finance, the specific problems are:

It can’t show your actual people. B2B relationships are built on people. Clients are choosing not just a firm but the team they’ll be working with. Generated faces — or stock photography used as a substitute — immediately signals that you’re either too small to have real photography done, or that you’re hiding what your people actually look like. Neither interpretation helps you.

It can’t show your actual environment. Office space, facilities, and working environment communicate company culture, stability, and investment. A generated image of a generic open-plan office tells a prospect nothing about who you actually are. Your real space — even if imperfect — is honest, and honest matters in professional services.

It can’t evidence your actual work. Case study photography, project documentation, and evidence of completed work are assets that genuinely differentiate you. No AI model can generate an image of the specific project you delivered for a specific client. That photograph only exists if a photographer was there.

It carries reputational risk. As AI detection tools improve and awareness grows, clients who spot generated imagery in a professional context draw the obvious conclusion: if you’re willing to fabricate your visual presence, what else might not be entirely accurate? That’s a trust problem that’s expensive to undo.

The Authenticity Signal Is Becoming More Valuable

There’s a broader shift underway. As AI-generated content floods every digital channel, genuinely real photography is becoming a differentiator in its own right. Brands and businesses that can say — credibly, demonstrably — “these are our actual people, our actual offices, our actual work” are carrying an advantage that only grows as the noise increases.

This isn’t speculative. It’s already playing out in how B2B buyers evaluate suppliers. Authentic visual content is increasingly a signal of operational substance, not just marketing effort.

Commercial Photography for Exeter Businesses

I’m Simon Plant, based in Somerset and working regularly throughout Exeter and East Devon. My commercial clients have included Mimecast, Clarks Shoes, the Environment Agency, and Oxford University Press — organisations where professional imagery serves a real business function rather than just filling space on a website.

For Exeter businesses, I cover the full range of commercial photography requirements:

Corporate portraiture and team photography — individuals and groups, at your premises or a suitable location, with portable studio equipment where needed. Consistent, professional, actually your people.

Premises and environment photography — offices, facilities, working environments photographed to show your business honestly and well. Useful for recruitment, proposals, pitches, and web presence.

Events and conference photography — professional coverage of the moments that demonstrate your business in action. Presentations, networking, awards, client events.

Business documentation — the ongoing visual record of your work, your clients, and your operations that makes future marketing and communications significantly easier.

For Exeter’s professional services businesses, investment in genuine commercial photography isn’t a marketing luxury. It’s infrastructure that earns its keep across proposals, websites, social media, and recruitment — repeatedly, over time.

Quick Summary

AI image generation has become genuinely impressive — but commercial photography has always been about proof, not just pictures. For production facilities, commercial property, corporate portraits, and documented workmanship, the images need to be real. With 34 years of commercial photography experience across Somerset and beyond, I photograph what’s actually there. Real locations. Real people. Real work.

Let’s be honest about something. AI image generation has become extraordinary. The gap between generated and photographed is closing fast in certain areas, and anyone who dismisses it hasn’t been paying attention. For concept visuals, mood boards, and generic marketing imagery, it has genuine uses.

But commercial photography has never really been about aesthetics alone. It’s been about one thing that AI simply cannot provide: proof.

A generated image, however convincing, documents nothing. It evidences nothing. It is, by definition, a picture of something that doesn’t exist. And for a significant portion of commercial photography work, that distinction matters enormously.

Your Production Line. Your Facility. Your Process.

When a manufacturing business needs photography of its production line, the images serve a purpose well beyond marketing. Investors want to see the actual plant before committing capital. Insurers need documentation of what they’re covering. Auditors and accreditation bodies require evidence of real processes and conditions. Supply chain partners and major clients increasingly conduct due diligence that includes reviewing your facilities.

A generated image of a production line — however polished — proves nothing about your actual operation. It can’t confirm your cleanroom meets the required standard, that your safety protocols are in place, or that your equipment is what you say it is.

Real commercial photography of your facilities is evidence. AI imagery is decoration.

I’ve photographed manufacturing environments, cleanrooms, and industrial facilities across Somerset and Devon — the kind of work where the camera needs to be physically present because the whole point is documenting what’s genuinely there.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="2000" height="1334" src="https://simonplant.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/2021-03-02-J2058-PrTx-0012.jpg" alt="Technical industrial photography of a manufacturing assembly line in Somerset.

Commercial Property and Warehousing

When a tenant is committing to a commercial lease, or a buyer is considering a significant investment in business premises, they’re making decisions worth hundreds of thousands of pounds based on what they see.

Generated imagery of commercial property would be, in any meaningful sense, fraudulent. The space either has the loading bays, the ceiling height, the natural light, the office fit-out — or it doesn’t. Photography documents which.

For estate agents handling commercial property, for landlords marketing business premises, and for developers presenting commercial schemes, the images need to show what actually exists. There’s no shortcut around that.

Corporate Portraiture — People Buy From People

In B2B, relationships are everything. Before a potential client picks up the phone or sends an enquiry, they’ve almost certainly looked at your website, checked LinkedIn, and formed a view of who they’re dealing with.

A generated face where your managing director should be, or an AI-assembled “team” that doesn’t exist, undermines trust the moment anyone notices — and people are beginning to notice. More importantly, it misses the entire point of corporate portraiture. Your clients want to see your people. Real faces, real personalities, real authority. That’s what creates the connection that precedes a conversation.

Corporate headshots and team photography are inherently about authenticity. It’s one area where the real thing will always matter more than the generated alternative.

Completed Work and Kitchen Installs

For businesses where the quality of their work is the product — kitchen fitters, interior designers, construction firms, specialist contractors — photography of completed projects is how you prove you can do what you say you can.

Manufacturer accreditation often requires photographic evidence of installations. Warranties can depend on documented workmanship. Future clients want to see finished projects, not impressions of what finished projects might look like.

Generated imagery of completed work you haven’t done would be misleading. Photography of work you have done is your most credible sales tool.

The Direction of Travel

As AI-generated imagery becomes ubiquitous across every channel, something interesting is beginning to happen. Real photography — provably real, visibly grounded in an actual place and moment — is becoming a signal of credibility in itself.

The brands that can genuinely say “these are our actual people, our actual facilities, our actual completed work” will carry a distinct advantage as audiences grow more accustomed to generated content. That shift hasn’t arrived at full scale yet. But the direction is clear, and the businesses investing in authentic commercial photography now will be better positioned when it does.

Commercial Photography Across Somerset and Beyond

With 34 years of commercial photography experience, I work with businesses across Somerset, Devon, and Dorset that need images of what’s actually there — not impressions of what might be. From manufacturing documentation and commercial property to corporate portraits and completed project records, the work I do is grounded in showing real businesses, real people, and real places.
