Photographing Sculptor Rebecca Gilling at Wick Farm, Curry Rivel

When sculptor and decorative plasterer Rebecca Gilling took up a residency near Langport, she got in touch to have her and her project photographed on site. It made for a fascinating shoot, and gave us a chance to learn more about a genuinely rare craft.

Who is Rebecca Gilling?

Rebecca Gilling, also known online as Becky Gilling, is a sculptor and artisan plasterer based near Ivybridge in South Devon, working under the name Rebecca Gilling Sculpture and Design. She creates bespoke sculptural and decorative work in lime, clay, cob, and earth, ranging from permanent architectural relief pieces to standalone panels for private collectors and large scale land art.

Her work sits at the meeting point of fine art and traditional building craft, drawing on centuries old techniques to create pieces for significant buildings and historic interiors, including the kind of ornate ceiling and wall work once found in grand rooms and churches.

Training and background

Rebecca’s route into decorative plasterwork has been anything but conventional. She trained in modelmaking at the Arts University Bournemouth, then spent nine years working as a prop maker in the events industry before turning to heritage crafts.

From there she built a remarkably broad skill set: the Prince’s Foundation Building Craft Programme, an apprenticeship in traditional Japanese plastering, studies in figurative sculpture at the Florence Academy of Art, and specialist training in Moroccan plasterwork. That combination of prop making precision, fine art training, and heritage craftsmanship is what gives her plasterwork its distinctive character.

She has also shared her knowledge more widely, teaching plaster sculpture and relief workshops, including sessions for New Age Artisans in Montana, and has built a strong following for her work online.

Photographing her residency near Langport

I was approached by Rebecca, who was working on a residency at Wick Farm, Curry Rivel, near Langport, to photograph her at work there for her portfolio.

Knowing her background in sculpture and decorative lime plasterwork, and the sheer range of traditional techniques she draws on, made the session all the more interesting. I spent a couple of hours photographing her at work on some pieces, capturing the process as much as the finished detail. The shoot went well, and we managed to document some of the intricate work that she had produced.

Holiday Park & Leisure Park Photography: Three Projects for Leisure Concepts

“Drone and holiday park photography in Yorkshire and Somerset”

This summer I photographed three holiday parks for a new client, Leisure Concepts.

They’re an interior design and architecture group based in Kenilworth, with over 30 years designing hotels, resorts and leisure venues. Their clients include Haven, Butlins, Warner and Away Resorts.

The brief was to document their design work and the refitting of key areas such as the pools, restaurants and shops. All three parks are now owned by Unity Holidays, which has been investing heavily in them.

Seven Lakes, Crowle, near Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire

My first shoot was in Lincolnshire.

The location was a country park with ten lakes and a lot of woodland.

The weather was a little unsettled, which was fine for the interiors, as I prefer to avoid bright shafts of light across the floors and furniture, which can distract attention from the decor.

Outside, however its always nice to have sunshine, especially when shooting for the travel industry.

We captured the decking lakeside and then launched the drone for some views to showcase the location.

Skirlington Coast, near Bridlington, East Yorkshire

The second location was on the coast.

Skirlington sits on the clifftop between Skipsea and Atwick, near Bridlington. 

I have family in Yorkshire, so I could shoot the job and catch up with them too for a couple of days.

Glad to say the sun did shine for us on this shoot, which was perfect as the location was especially impressive from the air showcasing the colourful site full of holiday makers and impressive coastal views.

Unity Beach, Brean, Somerset

My final shoot was close to home. Unity Beach at Brean is a short drive from Burnham-on-Sea, where I grew up. It’s one of the UK’s largest family holiday parks, and it was interesting to see it with its new look.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time here as a teenager, and although I was aware of the changes, I was quite blown away by just how much the area had changed and the sheer size of the site.

All 3 sites had some impressive facilities 

Pools, restaurants and shops each bring their own challenges, from reflections and mixed lighting to working around guests. The aim is to show what the designer intended, not just to document a room.

The drone was especially useful on this commission, enabling us to capture both stills and some video footage that showed the scale of the sites.

It’s always a pleasure to start working with a new client, and I’m looking forward to seeing where it leads.

Airbnb also rewards a wide spread of images across every room and outdoor space, since guests expect to scroll through a long gallery before booking.

Sykes Cottages works differently. Their listings are built around a structured photo set — exterior, each bedroom, bathroom, kitchen/living space, and any standout feature (hot tub, garden, sea view) — presented in a fairly fixed order. Sykes’ own site guidance to owners asks for landscape orientation as standard, consistent lighting across the set, and images that show the property honestly rather than aspirationally. Getting the order and coverage right matters more here than a single standout hero shot.

Rural Retreats leans further into the lifestyle-and-setting side of things. Because their properties are typically higher-end countryside escapes, their imagery tends to foreground the experience — a Somerset Levels sunset from the terrace, a farmhouse kitchen mid-morning, the walk down to a private garden — alongside the standard room-by-room set. The brief is less “show every room” and more “show why this specific property is worth the drive.”

What Doesn’t Change

Regardless of platform, a few things stay constant across every Somerset holiday let shoot:

• Wide-angle work that doesn’t distort. Small rooms need to read as spacious without warping doorframes or furniture into something unrecognisable.
• Consistent light across a set. Guests notice when one room looks warm and inviting and the next looks flat or mismatched in colour temperature — it reads as inconsistent even if they can’t say why.
• Individual processing, not batch edits. Every image needs its own attention. A batch-applied filter across 30 photos rarely suits every room equally.

Practical Approach for Owners Listing on Multiple Platforms

Most Somerset holiday let owners aren’t choosing one platform — they’re running the same property across Airbnb, Sykes Cottages, and often a direct booking site too. The efficient way to handle this is one comprehensive shoot, processed into platform-specific exports: a genuinely strong Airbnb hero shot pulled from the same set that also satisfies Sykes’ structured room-by-room requirement, without needing separate shoot days for each platform.

A farmhouse kitchen that looks flat and grey at midday can look completely different an hour before sunset, when low light comes through south-facing windows and picks out texture in stone, wood, and worktops that midday light flattens out.

Interior shoots generally work best either mid-morning or late afternoon, avoiding the harsh, high-contrast light of midday that can blow out window views and leave interiors comparatively dark. Exterior and garden shots depend heavily on the property’s aspect — a west-facing terrace wants late afternoon light, an east-facing garden wants morning.

This is one of the reasons a generic shoot booked for “whenever’s convenient” often underperforms one planned around the property’s actual orientation and the time of year.

Spring and summer properties across the Somerset Levels, the Quantocks, and Exmoor sell on outdoor living — gardens, terraces, hot tubs, the sense of a long evening outside. Autumn and winter shift the story. A wood burner, warm interior lighting, and a genuinely cosy-looking living space start to matter more than the garden. Many owners find it worth having two photo sets — a summer-led set and a winter-led set — since a single photoshoot taken in one season inevitably undersells the property for bookings made in the opposite half of the year.

Setting Is Part of the Product

Somerset’s holiday let market isn’t just competing on the property itself — it’s competing on where that property sits. A few examples of how setting should shape the shoot:

• Exmoor National Park properties benefit from images that capture the escape-from-it-all feeling of the location alongside interior comfort — guests are booking the landscape as much as the building.

Matching the shoot to what actually makes that specific location worth booking, rather than applying the same formula to every property regardless of where it sits, is usually the difference between photos that look fine and photos that convert.

The properties that convert best usually aren’t the ones with the most expensive furniture — they’re the ones where the photography genuinely understands the light at that specific address, the season the listing needs to work hardest in, and what makes that patch of Somerset worth a guest’s booking in the first place. When to Consider a Reshoot

Part of 34 years of commercial experience is recognising which approach is needed and adapting accordingly — often within the first two minutes of meeting someone.

Creative industries: The headshot itself can communicate something about creative sensibility. More flexibility on background, on crop, on expression — but it still needs to work professionally, not just look interesting.

Healthcare and education: Approachability is primary. These are sectors where the person in the photograph needs to feel accessible and trustworthy to a potentially anxious audience.

Getting this right requires understanding the sector before the session starts — knowing what the image needs to achieve and directing accordingly.

The Technical Side That People Don’t See

Behind the direction and the people-management, there’s a technical job that also needs to be right.

Lighting that flatters without flattening — that creates enough dimension to make the image feel three-dimensional without producing shadows that distract or harsh highlights that age. A lens choice and shooting distance that produce natural-looking proportions rather than the slight distortion that cheaper setups often introduce. A background that works for the brand context without competing with the subject.

And then retouching that enhances without obviously altering — the kind of retouching where the finished image looks like the best version of the person, not a different person entirely. This is a more common problem than it should be, and it’s one that clients don’t always notice until they see the image sitting next to colleagues who’ve been handled more naturally.

All of this needs to be consistent across every person photographed — whether that’s two people or two hundred, whether they’re photographed in the same session or across visits months apart.
