The <a href="http://www.wordwebonline.com/en/HALEANDHEARTY" title="Hale and Hearty" target="_blank">hale and hearty</a> Hunters.</p> <p>This year we ventured to <a href="http://www.sentryhill.net/index.php?do=welcome" title="Sentry Hill" target="_blank">Sentry Hill</a> in Newtownabbey. It’s a 19th century farmhouse that has now been converted into a visitor attraction. For Easter there was an Easter themed tour of the house with guides playing the characters of the McKinney family, to whom the house belonged. It’s a good chance to get an hours run done when I would just be sitting waiting for them to finish, probably drinking coffee and catching up on what is bouncing around the twittersphere.</p><p>The last two runs had been on cold clear nights and the conditions were just right for running, but last Friday night it was a bit miserable. It was pretty foggy and the air was wet, not full on rain, just that kind of wet misty stuff that makes me wish I had carried on trying to perfect my designs for ‘window wipers for glasses’ that I first conceived with a Lego Technik prototype back in about 1987.</p><p>The route I have been running carves its way through the most suburban of suburbs, Glengormley, once a thriving village (apparently) that is now just houses, fast food take aways, an American style car wash and a few crazy road junctions. It’s a pretty bland route, I don’t pass that many pedestrians and have mainly just got to avoid the traffic as I criss-cross a few major roads, but last Friday night it was different and not in a good way.</p><p>Most people will be aware that dimly lit street corners and empty car parks quite often act as hoodie magnets, places for the disgruntled ‘yoof’ of today to gather and well… just stand around and, as proven by last nights antics, bad weather seems only to increase the desire to stand around doing nothing. Maybe it’s the excitement of getting soaked and frozen to the core of your track-suited being, who knows, but last Friday night my run took me past one such gathering of adolescents who were huddled up in the car park of the former Lidl store. A few strides after I passed them, a rock about the size of a snooker ball shot in front of my feet followed by a sharp pain in my left toes. I assumed I had just stupidly kicked a rock lying on the road, that was until a second and third rock of about the same size followed, one a few feet in front of me the other just behind my heels. I was actually being stoned by the carpark hoodie scumbags!</p><p>Part of me actually can’t believe that it happened and it’s the first time I have been the victim of any ASBO worthy behaviour whilst running or otherwise. I have of course had the good old ‘legs on ye mate’ slagging for wearing Lycra but that comes with the territory, but having rocks thrown at you?? Disappointing Glengormley.</p><p>Obviously the sight of a man in a high-vis running jacket was far too much excitement for them, evoking their primal urge to try and hit me with poorly aimed projectiles! On second thoughts it might have been seeing a man in running tights that threatend their pubescent manliness, I’d bet that if I had been wearing football shorts and a premiership teams training top they wouldn’t have looked twice.<span style=""> I’m just gonna have to keep a look out from now on and maybe adjust my route in future.</span></p><p>In the end It might just be that the jacket purchased, with safety in mind when road running, may have actually put me in danger!
