Today is the feast of St. Joseph, the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus. He is such a great saint! Humble, silent, obedient. There isn’t a lot about him in the bible but what is there is powerful! Here is a beautiful prayer to St Joseph for guidance in honor of his feast day.

Today is the first day of the St. Andrew’s Christmas Novena. It runs from today, November 30 until Christmas Day. The novena consists of saying the below prayer 15 times a day.

It may sound like a lot but it is a short prayer and, only takes a few minutes. You can say the prayer all at once, one time a day or you can break it up and say the prayer five times a day, three times a day.

St. Andrew Christmas Novena (November 30 – Christmas Day)

Hail and blessed be the hour and moment, In which the Son of God was born Of the most pure Virgin Mary, At midnight, in Bethlehem, in piercing cold.

In that hour vouchsafe, O my God, to hear my prayer and grant my desires, Through the merits of Our Savior Jesus Christ, And of His Blessed Mother. Amen.

Here is a PDF version of the prayer so that you can print it out and keep the prayer in a handy place so you don’t forget to pray it every day.

Besides the St. Gertrude’s prayer for the Holy Souls and the daily prayers for the Holy Souls, there are many prayers and devotions we can do to help those souls.

1. Have Masses said for them. The most important prayer of the Catholic Church is the Holy Mass. We can have Masses “officially” said for them or we can pray for them whenever we go to Sunday or daily Mass.

2. Pray the rosary. The second best prayer we can pray as Catholics is the holy rosary. It is a good and beautiful practice to pray the rosary every day. And as we do so, we can offer the whole rosary or just a decade for the souls.

3. The Stations of the Cross. The stations of the cross isn’t just for Lent. We can pray the Stations any time and, again, offer them for the holy souls. Traditionally, every Friday is dedicated to remembering the Passion of Jesus, and a good day to pray the Stations of the Cross.

4. Visit a Cemetery. When you visit a cemetery, and say a prayer for the souls, you can gain a partial indulgence* that is applicable only for them. If you visit the cemetery from November 1 through November 8, and say a prayer for the holy souls, you can gain a plenary indulgence for them!

5. Fast for Them. Fasting is a powerful practice. It had fallen out of popularity for a long time, but with the explosion of intermittent fasting, it has gotten more popular again. We can do our own version of intermittent fasting, or you can fast for just one meal or give up between-meal snacks. Or you can fast from television, or social media, or anything else that is important to you. Come up with your own fasting practice. Make it consistent and don’t forget to offer it up for the souls in purgatory.

I hope this little list, along with the other prayers shared this week, will inspire and encourage you to pray for the holy souls in purgatory. Know that those souls will not forget our prayers for them and they will pray for us!

God bless.

I don’t know who authored the prayers, but God bless him or her! I am going to post them each day for you and hope you pray them often, and not just throughout November. Today is day seven.

Prayer for Saturday

O Lord God Almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which gushed forth from the side of Thy Divine Son Jesus, in the sight and to the extreme pain of His most holy Mother, deliver the souls in purgatory, and especially that one which was the most devoted to her; that it may soon attain unto Thy glory, there to praise Thee, world without end. Amen.

I don’t know who authored the prayers, but God bless him or her! I am going to post them each day for you and hope you pray them often, and not just throughout November. Today is day four.

Prayer for Wednesday

O Lord God Almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which Thy Divine Son Jesus shed in the streets of Jerusalem when he carried the Cross on His sacred shoulders, deliver the souls in purgatory and especially that soul amongst them all which is richest in merits before thee; so that it may magnify Thee and bless Thee forever. Amen.

Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory Be…

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let Your perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

I don’t know who authored the prayers, but God bless him or her! I am going to post them each day for you and hope you pray them often, and not just throughout November. Today is day three.

Prayer for Tuesday

O Lord God Almighty, I pray Thee, by the Precious Blood which Thy Divine Son Jesus shed in His bitter crowning with thorns, deliver the souls in purgatory and especially that soul amongst them all which would be the last to depart out of these pains; that it may come to praise Thee in thy glory and bless Thee forever. Amen.
