Delete All Facebook Wall Posts From Your Facebook Timeline

The following process describes how to bulk delete posts from your Facebook timeline.

Please note:

simplengtips.blogspot.com will not be held liable for any data loss caused by these instructions (deleting posts etc). Use at YOUR OWN risk.
The script should not unfriend any of your friends, or delete any of your uploaded images or videos – however it was written and is maintained by a third party (Greasy Fork) – so I cannot guarentee what it exactly does.
There may be some posts left over due to Facebooks’ ‘Older posts’ feature hiding these posts.
To be certain that all posts have been removed I suggest that after the tool has completed you repeat step 4 ensure the timeline is completely cleared.
It’s also worth noting that the Facebook data is stored on multiple servers. So it may take several days, or weeks for the information to be completely removed. So some of your friends might see posts that you have deleted until all servers know that you have chosen for it to be deleted.

Instructions:

To complete this process, you will need to use

Firefox browser,
Greasemonkey addon
Facebook Timeline Cleaner script written by Greasy Fork.

Step 1: Install Firefox

If you don’t already have the Firefox browser installed, you can install it here:

Step 2: Install the Greasemonkey addon

With Firefox open, go to:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/
Click on the ‘Add to Firefox’ and follow the prompts to install Greasemonkey.

Step 3: Install the Facebook Timeline Cleaner script

With Firefox open, go to:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/9106-facebook-timeline-cleaner
Click on ‘Install this script’ and follow the prompts.

Step 4: Open your Facebook Activity Log and start the delete process

1. With Firefox open, open your Facebook profile (click on your name at the top right of the page) then click on the ‘View Activity Log’ button

2. You should see the following at the top of the page, if you do not press F5 on your keyboard to refresh the page

3. Leave ‘Autoscrollen’ (auto scroll) enabled

4. Tick ‘Run’

5. Choose the a day range that you want to delete (optional – depending on the next step)

6. Now using the ‘Privacy Extension’ button on the right, select what you want to do – for example, ‘Delete everything older than X Days’

7. Click ‘OK’ to the warning message.

8. The process will now start. It will automatically scroll through your Activity Log and either hide or delete your posts are you specified.

9. If it cannot delete a post, for example where you were tagged, it will hide it from your timeline.

10. The script should not unfriend any of your friends, or delete any of your uploaded images or videos – however it was written and is maintained by a third party (Greasy Fork) – so I cannot guarentee what it exactly does.

11. You will notice your browser and computer are slow whilst the process happens – this is because it’s a very intensive process to load all the posts and delete them. You will need to be patient and wait – depending on how many posts you have, it may take hours to complete – which will still be faster than manually deleting.

12. I suggest you leave the computer alone whilst it runs, do not navigate away from the Activity Log or open other browser tabs.

Hide/Unhide Data in Files, Folders, USB Drives

A software called WinMend Folder Hidden is used to hide files/folder either in your computer or in your removable drive. If you have a common computer in your home then I am sure some day or the other you must have thought about hiding some of your files from others. Gone are the days when you can simply hide your data using the Windows built-in hiding option, unless you’ve got non tech-savvy elders or toddlers (yeah toddlers not kids because even those 6 year old know a lot about computers these days than you knew when you were six). So, you need to get smarter when it comes to hiding files.

To begin with, download and install WinMend on your computer.

Initial Run

For the installation of the software I would not elaborate here as it is rather simple. After the software get installed, run the program by clicking on the desktop shortcut or run from start menu program.

On the first run, it will ask you for a password. This password is set by yourself, which will be required to enter every time you run this software to hide/unhide files or folder. For security purpose, try to insert a long password, ideally 15~20 characters, with number and alphabet mixed.

Then you will come across to the software interface as shown below:

Hide Files/Folder

Obviously, the top right two buttons ‘Hide Folder’ and ‘Hide File(s)’ are used to hide files/folder. To hide a folder, click ‘Hide Folder’ button, browse to the folder you would like to hide, and then OK. The same process can be done to hide files (Multiple selection allowed), except you click on ‘Hide File(s)’ for it. Series of screenshots below shows the process of hiding:

1) Click ‘Hide Folder’ or ‘Hide File(s)’

2) Browse for your files or folder

When the status is written red ‘Hidden’ means you have already successfully hide your files/folder. The hidden files/folder will not reveal themselves even the option ‘Show Hidden Files’ in Windows is enabled. They will only appear when you unhide them using the same software (apparently). I had even tried to uninstall the software and reinstall it, with deleting all the registry related to WinMend, I still can’t seem to reset the password that has been set during earlier installation phase. It seems quite secure for me, especially for home users.

Unhide Files/Folder

When you require to access the hidden files/folder, just start up the software, enter your password, select (mark the checkbox) the files/folder that you would like to unhide, click ‘Unhide’, and you’re done. Simply and straight forward. Check the sequential screenshots below if you can’t get it:

1) Enter the password

2) Tick the checkbox for the files/folder wanted to unhide

3) Click ‘Unhide’

4) You are done. They are visible now. (Status is Visible)

This software is provided by WinMend for free which is of course a good thing for every computer user, however, this is only meant for home user, or can be used to hide non-private and confidential documents. For company and business user, they possibly found this software inadequte to protect office used or business related important documents, as this software is unable to provide a very secure way in protecting those documents, as mentioned in the official documentation of WinMend Hidden Folder, which they mentioned it is best for home user only.

Points to remember

Please do take a good note of these points before you start using the program.

There is no password hint or password reset option in the program and thus if by any chance you forget your password, all your data will be hidden forever.

If you uninstall the program while it’s hiding any of your data it will be hidden unless you reinstall the program and unhide it.

Install Windows 7 From A USB Drive

With this Bootable USB guide all you need to ensure is that your motherboard supports USB booting, and this is a common feature now for most of the computers. The method is very simple and you can use without any hassles.

What you need:
– Windows 7 DVD install disc or ISO image
– USB Drive (4GB+ and as fast as you can get)
– Running Windows Operating system
– Working set of hands and eyes
– A few minutes of your life

Before going any further, make sure you have removed any important files on your drive to a safe location, what we are about to do next is to erase the entire contents of the drive.
Insert your DVD of Windows 7 into the computer, but don’t start the normal install process.
Open your ‘My Computer’ and make a note of the drive numbers of both the USB drive and the DVD drive with Windows 7 files on it.

Procedure:

Step 1: Plug-in your USB flash drive to USB port and move all the contents from USB drive to a safe location on your system.

Step 2: Open Command Prompt with admin rights. Use any of the below methods to open Command Prompt with admin rights.

*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.

Or

*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

Step 3: Type in the following commands in the command prompt:

First type

DISKPART

this loads the diskpart application we need to proceed

Then type

LIST DISK

the image above shows our 32 GB USB drive is listed as DISK 2

so you have to type

SELECT DISK 2 (your USB Drive may have a different number, don’t follow exactly this text it depends on your usb drive)

You will get a successful response “Disk 2 is now the selected disk”

Next we want to clean the USB drive

Type:

CLEAN

you will get a successful response ‘DiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk”.

After the drive is cleaned follow the list in the image above (detailed below in list order) – you can also note the successful text responses from the OS as you enter each command.

SELECT DISK 2 (or what number your USB drive has)

CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY

SELECT PARTITION 1

ACTIVE

FORMAT FS=NTFS

Formatting can take a little time depending on the size of the drive, our 32GB unit took about 10 minutes to format - you will see a percentage readout until it is finished.

Next type:

ASSIGN

EXIT (DISK PART will exit)

Type D: CD BOOT (substitute the “D” if necessary with the letter of your Windows 7 DVD drive)

then key

CD BOOT

then

BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 E: (substitute the “E” if necessary with the letter of your now ready USB drive) – we are telling the system to create a boot sector file on the USB drive.

Now you can exit the command prompt and copy all the files on the Windows 7 DVD to the USB drive.

Once this step is finished you’ll be ready to boot from this drive, all you need to do is configure your motherboard bios setup to boot first from USB rather than hard drive or optical drive. If you don’t know how to do this, refer to your specific motherboard manual or search the internet.

Now, Windows 7 installation should take between 40% and 60% of the time it does from the DVD disc.

Add “Take Ownership” to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista

Taking ownership of system files or folders in Windows is not a simple task. Whether you use the GUI or the command line, it takes far too many steps. This method works in Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 8.1, and it maybe works in XP, though you won’t need it there.

Thankfully somebody created a registry hack that will give you a menu item for “Take Ownership” that will handle all the steps for you. We found this many years ago, and since then it’s been hosted here for everybody to use.

Here’s what the new right-click menu will look like after installing this registry hack. If you are in Windows 8 or 8.1, the little shield won’t show up, but it’ll work just fine.

Install

Download and unzip the files contained in the zipfile. Double-click the InstallTakeOwnership.reg file and click through the prompts. No reboot necessary.

Uninstall

Double-click the RemoveTakeOwnership.reg file and click through the prompts. No reboot necessary.

In Microsoft Excel, sometimes you need to generate tons of random strings of characters. It may be different passwords, unique ID's and alphanumeric combinations. May these tutorial help you ease the burden using Excel's RANDBETWEEN function. There could be several ways to do this:

1. Generate Random Number String

To generate a 1-digit random number, simply use a formula like this:

=RANDBETWEEN(0,9)

This will randomly display a number between 0 and 9 each time the worksheet is refreshed or when you press F9.

To generate a 4-digit random number string, simply use a formula like this:

=RANDBETWEEN(1000,9999)

This will randomly display 4-digit numbers between 1000 to 9999 each time the worksheet is refreshed or when you press F9.

2. Generate Random Character String

To generate random uppercase character, simply use a formula like this:

=CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(65,90))

This will randomly display character between A to Z.

To generate random lowercase character, simply use a formula like this:

=CHAR(RANDBETWEEN(97,122))

This will randomly display a character between a to z.

To generate 4 random uppercase character string, simply use a formula like this:

To generate 8 random alphanumeric strings with 4 numbers and 4 characters, simply use a formula like this:

5. Generate a Random Password

Good passwords tend to have at least eight characters and are a mix of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. To do this, simply combine the above formulas into one formula by simply adding an ampersand (&) in between each formula, like this:

Why Mabini is Seated the Whole Time

The "why Mabini is seated the whole time" in Heneral Luna is making rounds on social media. The Historical Commission is grateful for the discovery of this rare photo of Mabini by the U.S.-based Kevin Soriano Perez in an auction and did not hesitate to bid for it, even it cost him much. A reproduction of the photo is one of the highlights of the Commission's Mabini Shrine Tanauan. Soriano, who was also from the same barangay where Mabini was born, in Talaga, Tanauan City, Batangas, will "repatriate" this rare Mabini photo and will deposit at the Commission for posterity purposes.

Mabini fell ill sometime in January 1895, at the height of his youth and passion for reform movement in Manila. Until one day, the year after, he was paralyzed, and his physicians--all were fellow patriots--were clueless of his illness. He was already 31 then.

His detractors who envied his power and influence in the revolutionary government circulated a tsismis that his paralysis was actually caused by syphilis. He died in 1903, still clueless what caused his paralysis. 80 years later, in 1981, the Philippine Orthopedic Center and the National Historical Institute (forerunner of the Commission) exhumed his remains at Mabini Shrine Tanauan for post mortem examination. The physicians, driven by patriotism and inspired by Mabini, found out that Mabini's paralysis was caused by polio.

In a letter dated 9 November 1900, Mabini recounted: "Since January 1896, I cannot stand because of weakness in my waist and legs. I do not suffer any other ache and I look as if I were not sick. The physicians however say that I will never recover my health; but I do not despair because I am still able to do something good for my country." Indeed, Mabini was "still able to do something good" for the country, for he guided Aguinaldo in his decisions, served the people by contributing his knowledge on jurisprudence by designing a democratic government befitting for his people, and penned orders and laws needed by the country. He was indeed even more powerful than Aguinaldo, but used his power for the sake of bayan.

Here is an excerpt from an undated resignation letter (ca. December 1898) of Mabini. He felt Aguinaldo no longer needs him, as the latter had been listening to and being controlled by those whom Mabini called "viruses"--the likes of Pedro Paterno and Felipe Buencamino:

"Although I acknowledge that you have reasons to get tired of me because I only tell you things that may cause you trouble, I hope you will have the patience to read through what I am going to tell you, as I promise never to trouble you again...

"Neither did I expect that you would grant the rich people these guarantees. We worked without any pay; but the rich people will not put up their money without having a voice in the Treasury. It is probable that the members of the Board would ask for salaries. In this case, the rich people will get all the benefit and the soldiers will remain hungry. The rich would press the collection from the tenants. The administrators will pocket part of the money, and only a little will go to the government safe... In the end, the tenants and the employees will blame you, and the rich will have a big laugh.

"Would to heaven that their plans would not prosper!... I am calling your attention to this so that you would carefully choose the persons whom you may appoint as members, and would to heaven that you do not choose persons who would be bribed and who would be subservient!

"Inasmuch as you now count with many helpers, please allow me to resign. When you had no one, I worked by your side despite my ailment; now that you do not need me anymore, it is but fair that I should think of my health... That is why I said at the beginning that this will be the last time I shall trouble you... May God enlighten you, inasmuch as in your hands lies the welfare or the misfortune of the Philippines."

Aguinaldo did not approve Mabini's resignation. From being a mere political adviser pro bono, Aguinaldo made Mabini the president of his cabinet with concurrent position as Foreign Affairs secretary on 2 January 1899. Mabini finally resigned from Aguinaldo's government on 5 May 1899, out of digust to the people surrounding and controlling Aguinaldo, i.e. Paterno, Buencamino. Together with Antonio Luna, Mabini was against the U.S. autonomy. A month later, Luna was assassinated and it is said if Mabini did not resign he would be assassinated as well.

Mabini was more than just the "brains of the revolution" but the "light that guided the Filipino nation."

Please do visit Museo ni Apolinario Mabini both at the Mabini Shrine in Tanauan City, Batangas and at PUP Sta. Mesa, Manila (Mabini's Nagtahan House). These are free to public. The Historical Commission has also produced a documentary on Mabini this year.

After his resignation, Mabini became a journalist and had written critical articles about the government. In his article “La Verdad en su Lugar” (“The Truth in its Place,”) published in La Independencia (Luna's newspaper) on 15 October 1899, he said "Sincere, honest, and loyal politics are, in truth, very hard to find these days, because, unfortunately, self interest and ambition take control over individuals and blind governments..."

How to Easily Heal Cavities At Home

If you are like most people chances are you have went to the dentist only to get the dreaded news that you have a cavity.

It is common to believe that the only way that you can fix the cavity is to have the dentist drill it out and fill it with some type of synthetic material. Many people do not realize that there are ways to naturally fix a cavity without going to the dentist.

Causes of Cavities

Cavities are caused by the decay of a tooth. This decay can damage both the interior and exterior of the tooth. One of the main causes of cavities is your diet.

You may not even notice that you have a cavity until you visit your dentist. However, some people develop tooth aches after they drink a hot or cold beverage or when they eat something sweet. At times you may even be able to see holes in your teeth.

Many grains are thought to cause cavities because when grains are eaten and then allowed to sit on your teeth, they naturally turn to acid. This acid can break down the enamel of your teeth, which starts the decaying process. Once the tooth starts to decay it is more likely that a cavity will develop.

Naturally Repairing Tooth Damage

One of the biggest reasons that our teeth begin to decay, which leads to cavities, is because we do not have enough minerals in our diet. Naturally, the best way to heal a cavity is to make sure that you start getting the minerals that your body needs. This includes minerals that your teeth need.

There are several foods that you should focus on adding to your diet. These include:

    Coconut oil
    Organic dairy
    Grass fed meats
    Bone broths
    Seafood
    Cooked vegetables
    Organ meats such as liver

Some of the foods that you should avoid eating when trying to heal a cavity naturally are those that are high in phytic acid. This includes things such as seeds, beans, nuts, and grains. It is also a good idea to limit the number of processed foods that you eat as these commonly upset the balance of your blood sugar levels.

As you can see from the list of foods that you should add to your body, soluble fats are great for your teeth. Try cooking your vegetables in a bone broth to increase the benefits.

There are also supplements that you can take to help heal your cavity. Some of the supplements that you may want to consider include gelatin, magnesium, and fermented cod liver oil.

Simply changing your diet to limit grains and add in good fats can do a lot to help heal any cavity that you may have. Your dental health can affect your entire body, which is why it is important to take care of any tooth issue that you may have right away.

How to Compare Data in Two Columns to Find Duplicates in Excel

When we use a worksheet, sometimes we need to compare two columns and find the duplicate values.

For example, I have two long columns of student names, and now, I want to compare them and find out the same names. If I compare them cell by cell, it will be tiresome and waste a lot of time.

So... for those of you who have ever needed to find the difference between two columns, this is for you.

Look at the following screenshot, I have column A (A2:A15) and column C (C2:C15) which contain some duplicate names.

The are 2 methods that can be used to compare two columns and display the duplicate values.

METHOD 1: (Use of a Worksheet Formula) Please do with the following steps:

1. In cell B2, input this formula: =IF(ISERROR(MATCH(A2,$C$2:$C$15,0)),"",A2).

Note: In the above formula: A2 is the column which you want to be compared. $C$2:$C$15 is the range that you want to be compared with. You can change the variables for what you are using.

2. Press the ENTER key. Select cell B2, and then drag the fill handle over cell B15. And all of the duplicate names will be displayed in column B. See screenshot:

METHOD 2: (Use of a Visual Basic Macro) Please do with the following steps:

1. Start Excel with your data in it.

2. Press ALT+F11 to start the Visual Basic Editor (see image below).

3. On the Insert menu, click Module.

4. Enter the following code in a module sheet:

5. Press ALT+F11 to return to Excel.

6. Using our data above, select the range A2:A15.

7. In Excel 2003 and in earlier versions of Excel, point to Macro on the Tools menu, and then click Macros.

In Excel 2007, click the Developer tab, and then click Macro in the Code group.

8. Click Find_Matches, and then click Run.

The duplicate numbers are displayed in Column B. The matching data will be put next to the first column.

Export All or Part of the Registry to a Text File

Open Registry Editor.
On the File menu, click Export.
In File name, enter a name for the registry file.
Under Export range, do one of the following:
- To back up the entire registry, click All.
- To back up only a particular branch of the registry tree, click Selected branch and enter the name of the branch you want to export.
Click Save.

Caution

Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on your computer.

Notes

To open Registry Editor, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
You must have appropriate permissions to make changes to a registry key. To maintain security when making changes to a registry key for which you need administrative credentials, log in as a member of the Users group and run Regedit as an administrator by right-clicking the Regedit icon, clicking Run as, and clicking an account in the local Administrators group. The Regedit icon does not appear by default from the Start menu. To access the icon, open the Windows or WINNT folder on your computer.
You can use a text editor like Notepad to work with the registry files you create by exporting.
You can save registry files in the Windows format, in the format used in Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0, as binary hive files, or as text files. Registry files are saved with .reg extensions, and text files are saved with .txt extensions.
In Windows Explorer, double-clicking a file with the .reg extension imports the file into the computer's registry.

Disabling APIPA – Automatic Private IP Addressing

Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA), is a feature of Windows (except Windows NT) operating systems.

With APIPA, DHCP clients can automatically self-configure their IP configuration with an IP address and subnet mask when a DHCP server isn’t available.

When a DHCP client boots up, it first looks for a DHCP server in order to obtain an IP configuration. If the client is unable to successfully negotiate a DHCP lease, it uses APIPA to automatically configure itself with an IP address from a range that has been reserved especially for Microsoft.

The IP address range is 169.254.0.1 through 169.254.255.254. The client also configures itself with a default class B subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. A client uses the self-configured IP address until a DHCP server becomes available.

The APIPA service also checks every five minutes for the presence of a DHCP server. If it detects a DHCP server on the network, APIPA stops, and the DHCP server replaces the APIPA networking addresses with dynamically assigned addresses.

Step-by-step procedure to disable APIPA:

1. Access the Registry Editor

- Click START > RUN. Alternatively, you could press the Windows Key + R keys on the keyboard to open the Run prompt. Note that you will need to have administrative rights to open the Registry Editor. Type regedit.exe (or simply regedit) to bring up the Registry Editor.

- You should see the Registry Editor application similar to image below.

2. Backup the Registry

- Click Computer to highlight it, click File > Export. This will bring up the Export Registry File window. In the File name field type in the name of the registry backup, for example regbackup and click Save. By default, this will save the entire registry. (now you can work confidently knowing that you have a full backup just in case. As an added protective measure you could create a system restore point)

3. Navigate to the appropriate network adapter within the registry.

- This can be done by navigating the following path:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces

- Then, locate the proper network adapter; each is labeled as a different hexadecimal subkey.

4. Disable APIPA

- Right-click anywhere in the right window pane and select New > DWORD value.

- Create the following entry: IPAutoconfigurationEnabled: REG_DWORD.

- Assign a value of 0 to disable Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) support for the selected network adapter.

5. Close the registry and restart the computer.

6. Test the new configuration and verify network connectivity.

- Type ipconfig /all in the command-line to see if the correct IP address is being obtained from the DHCP server. You can also test whether your registry entry was applied correctly by viewing the Autoconfiguration Enabled field within the results of the ipconfig. It should say No.

- Connect to LAN servers, domain controllers, and to the Internet to verify network connectivity. Of course, the IP address you obtain will most likely be different than the one in the scenario; also, it might be a different IP than the computer was using previously.

Autoconfiguration Ipv4 Address IP Problem

When I connect my laptop to LAN it wasn't getting the IP from my DHCP server. Instead it gives me some weird IP like 169.254.x.x . while my wifi was working fine, I searched Alot to get to know until i found a great piece of code on a blog. so I am going to share with you guys. (see image below with the problem)

Please follow the procedure:

1. If you are using any FIREWALL disable it (like me, I use comodo so I disable it temporarily)

2. Click on START and click on RUN (or simple press Windows Key + R ) type CMD

3. Now type the following code below:

netsh interface ipv4 show inter

4. My connected LAN here is Local Area Connection and its Idx = 14 (we will use this idx number in next code)

5. Now type the following code below and replace your Idx number, as mine is 14

netsh interface ipv4 set interface 14 dadtransmits=0 store=persistent

6. If it says OK. Congratulations you have done the difficult part.

7. Next procedure, click on START and RUN again and type services.msc

8. Services dialog box will appear, search for DHCP Client right click on it and click on Properties then click on Startup Type then select Disable and now click on Stop button and click on OK.

9. UNPLUG your LAN cable and RESTART your system.

10. After restart DON'T PLUGIN YOUR CABLE, go to services.msc and find again DHCP Client right click on it and click on Properties then click on Startup Type now select Automatic lastly click on Start button below and then OK.

11. Now Plugin your LAN cable and enjoy.

By the way you can Enable your Firewall again :)

Prevent a User from Changing Any Data in Excel 2007

We will show you how to lock a spreadsheet so that nothing can be changed in it.

This is a great feature to use when you want to present data without allowing for it to be potentially corrupted or altered.

The result of this action is that it will prevent a user from doing almost anything with your data unless they know how to unlock it and know your password, if one is used.

Steps to Protect a Worksheet in Excel

1. Go to the Review tab and click the Protect Sheet button:

2. Choose if you want to password protect the data or not. This is optional.

3. Choose what you want a user to be able to do within the worksheet. There are many options, but "Select locked cells" and "Select unlocked cells" are selected by default and this is good enough usually.

4. Hit OK and you are DONE.

Now, the user cannot change any data within this worksheet. If they try to do something that is not allowed, this is the message they see:

This message does tell the user where to go to Unprotect the worksheet though, so, if you did not enter a password in Step 2 above, then it will be really easy for any user to change data on the sheet.

Steps to Unprotect a Worksheet

1. Navigate to the desired worksheet.

2. Go to the Review tab and click the Unprotect Sheet button. This will only appear if the sheet is protected.

3. If there is a password for the sheet, you will need to enter it now:

4. Now the sheet is unprotected and can be worked on as usual.

Note: This is a very useful feature if you need to send your Excel files out to other people. Just remember to not forget your password, if you use one.

This will make it so that a user cannot open the Excel file unless they have the correct password.

Steps to Encrypt a Workbook with a Password in Excel 2007

1. Click the Office Button then select New to create a Blank Workbook:

Alternate Row Shading Using Conditional Formatting in Excel

One way to make your data legible is to apply cell shading to every other row in a range. Excel's Conditional Formatting feature (available in Excel or later) makes this a simple task.

1. Select the range that you want to shade, then click Home>> Conditional Formatting>> New Rule... See screenshot:

2. Then a New Formatting Rule dialog box will pop out. Select Use a formula to determine which cells to format item. Then Input the formula “=MOD(ROW(),2)” in Format values where this formula is true.

3. Then click the Format… button, another Format Cells dialog box will pop out. Go to Fill tab and choose one colour for shading the background. See screenshot:

3. Click OK to return the New Formatting Rule dialog box, and also you will see the colour in the Preview box.

4. Then click OK. You will get the result you want. See screenshot:

The best part is that the row shading is dynamic. You'll find that the row shading persists even if you insert or delete rows within the original range.

Notes:

1. Insert or delete a row in the shading range and you will see that the shading persists.

2. If you want to shade alternate columns,using this formula “=MOD(COLUMN(),2)”.

Add “Open with Notepad” to the Context Menu for All Files

The default method of opening unknown files forces you to go through a list of known applications and is generally a pain to deal with. That’s why I like to have a context menu option for “Open with Notepad” so that I can quickly open up files without having to go through a lot of trouble.
This registry hack is nothing new, it’s been around forever… think of this as a refresher course. Also note that you can use this same technique to substitute any other application that you’d like by adjusting the path in the registry to point to the different editor.

Manual Registry Hack
Open regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell

Right-click on “shell” and choose to create a new key, calling it “Open with Notepad”. Create a new key below that one called “command”. Double-click on the (Default) value in the right-hand pane and enter in the following:

notepad.exe %1

The change should take effect immediately… just right-click on any file and you’ll see the next menu entry.

Disable All Notification Balloons in Windows 7

If you find the popup notification balloons in the Windows system tray to be too annoying, you might be interested to know that you can completely disable them. This would be an extreme option, of course… typically you can just turn them off in any offending applications, but if you want to disable them across the board, this is the solution.
Note: This should work in any version of Windows.

Note: I’m not necessarily recommending that everybody do this… you should only bother with it if you need to solve this particular problem.
Manual Registry Hack
Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:

Right-click on the right-hand pane, and create a new 32-bit DWORD with the following values:

Name: EnableBalloonTips
Value: 0

You’ll have to logoff and back on in order to see the change… or to be more correct, you won’t see any popup balloons anymore.

Change Excel 2007 to save in 97-2003 Format by Default

Excel 2007 will save in the default file format. In most cases this will be as an Excel 2007 workbook. This can be really frustrating if you forget to change the file type on saving and realise it won't be compatible to the person you are sending it to.

Fortunately, you can save yourself this aggravation by changing the default save format to 97-2003 if you prefer. To do this, click the main office button and locate Excel Options on the bottom right of the menu (see below).

Select Save from the left side menu. From this panel you can customise how workbooks are saved. The first thing you'll notice is a drop down list next to where it says 'Save files in this format.' (see below). The default Excel Workbook refers to your 2007 version. Scroll down a couple to select 97-2003 Workbook.

Click OK and you are done. Now Excel will automatically save in 97-2003 format by default. Of course, you can change this back again or choose to save an individual workbook in another format at the time of saving.

Editing Windows 8 Lock Screen Colors

Microsoft provides a Metro style control panel to personalize the color scheme of accounts on Windows 8 but never provided an interface to customize the lock screen colors where you select accounts and log in. The lock screen colors can be customized just like the rest of the Windows 8 Metro interface but you must edit the registry.

1. Log into any account with administrative rights on your PC.

2. Open the Start Screen and type in regedit and hit Enter.

3. Navigate through HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Microsoft, Windows, CurrentVersion, Explorer and then Accent.

4. Create a new DWORD called DefaultColorSet by right clicking on Accent and select New and then DWORD (32-bit) value.

5. Right click on your new DefaultColorSet entry and select Modify.

6. Pick a color scheme from the graphic above and note the corresponding decimal value.

7. Switch the base to Decimal on the Modify screen and enter in the value you want according to the chart.

8. Click OK and reboot your PC.
