Until now, there have not been many options to attaching a handrail to a steel grating floor. You can weld, but that can be costly and dangerous. You can build an offset handrail that attached to the side of the structure, but installation can be difficult. We have a new fitting and grating clip which make attaching handrail uprights to steel, aluminum or fiberglass grating even easier. The trick is to use a 262 fitting, with a G Clip GM. Using these two components allows you to connect handrail bases to floor gratings in a simple and straight forward manner from one side of the surface.

See the pictures below for an overview. See our fitting page and G Clip page for more information on those components.

1. Insert the bottom half of the G Clip from the tops side of the grating

2. Connect the grating clip to the grating with the bottom fastener

3. Slide the 262 Fitting onto the bolt on the clip.

4. Fasten the fitting to the clip with standard nuts and washers.

5. Slide in your upright pipe and tighten the set screws.

That’s it! In several minutes you’ve created a connection that is as strong as a weld, but is not prone to rust and requires no specialized labor to install.

Have you ever noticed that when you take up a particular interest that you tend to see that interest wherever you go. Well, the fact that I sell Kee Klamp pipe fittings makes me really alert to Kee Klamp structures wherever I go. Recently our family took a picnic to Braddock Bay State Park outside of Rochester, NY. When we were there we checked out the hawk lookout stand and the long dock that goes out into the marsh. I was happy to see that the dock going out into the marsh was thoroughly railed with a Kee Klamp railing.

This project is a great example of how railings made with Kee Klamp fittings stand up to a moisture rich environment. This rail has clearly been in place for a number of years and still looks fantastic. Find out more about our railing and handrails.

One thing we try to be consistent with here at Simplified Building is serving our customers whether large or small. Sometimes we’re quoting hundreds of feet of railing, and sometimes, it just a simple 3 foot rail, like in the one pictured below.

Kee Klamp hand railings don’t have to be huge, the can be used in a number of different residential environments.

Here is a rail that we recently supplied for Warren McDunn, who runs his own handy man service Can Do Handyman Service

On a recent trip that I took to England, I saw Kee Klamp railing all over the place. In England, it seems that more people use fittings than they use welded rail. Here are a few snap shots:

It All Starts with an Idea

When our customers come to us, they usually have ideas. We love ideas, and helping people to realize their project. Cletus O’Brian came to us with an idea for a shade structure made with pipe and aluminum Kee Lite fittings.

Sometimes it Becomes a Drawing

Sometimes, in order to better visualize the project, our internal SketchUp expert, Sam Wender, will produce a drawing. This drawing allows the client to clearly see how all the parts fit together. It also enables us to make sure that we have listed all the appropriate parts for building the structure. The drawing also serves as a basis for further ingenuity. In this case, Cletus modified the design further before he placed his order.

A Bill of Materials and a Purchase

We produce a bill of materials for the project. The client purchases the materials from our web site and has them sent directly to the project location.

The Fun Part.. Installation

Once the ordering process is complete, the real fun begins, the construction of your project. Cletus attached his structure to deck that houses several picnic tables. The structure looks great, and is a tremendous example of what can be constructed with Kee Klamp fittings.

Here’s what Cletus had to say about this project:

Our small community has a beach park that used to have a wooden gazebo but that was destroyed in the hurricanes in 2004. We have been putting up cheap carport awnings for a few years since as the state will not allow permanent structures on the beach anymore. We would have to replace the tarp anywhere from 1 week to 6 months depending on the weather , and the frame would need to be replaced every 3 months to a year depending on how well the “foreign” manufacturer decided to galvanize his poles and fittings. I had seen your fittings used at jobsites for safety railings for years so I thought it might make a good awning. We have a local awning sewer who uses a welder to make awning frames but after talking to the welder it was obvious that the frames were not exactly an engineered product. I showed the awning sewer your sketch and he felt that his custom awning could be tightly snugged against the frame which would help hold the entire structure together. We hope the frame will last for years and the awning itself is rated for 40 MPH winds. We envision taking the awning down any time a tropical storm or larger is on the horizon but the frame is well fastened to our deck and should survive all but a category 3 or higher in our minds. We’ll see!!

Here are some pictures of Cletus’s completed project:

Months in the making and we are finally very pleased to announce the release of our new web site: simplifiedsafety.com. Simplified Safety is a site that will focus on the following product areas.

Safety Solutions – We know the people are looking for more than just products. There is a need for safety product providers, but also experts who can help people decide which safety solutions will work best in their particular context. Our solution assistance is focused on exactly that.

Fall Protection Products – Over the years we have noticed that people are coming to us for railings to protect their workers from dangerous falls. We hope to focus and drive people towards fall prevention products such as railings, guardrails, skylight screens and other barrier methods whenever possible. In addition to this we will be offering a line of fall arrest and fall restraint equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, retractables, anchor points, and more.

Personal Protection Equipment – PPE is the equipment that is worn by the working individual to protect them while working in a dangerous environment. These kinds of products include: eye protection, head protection, ear protection, hand protection, high visibility clothing and so much more.

We are adding more products daily, so please check out our site. If you are a safety product provider, feel free to contact us and we may consider carrying your product as well.

Why did we build Simplified Safety?

We found that we were focusing more and more on safety products and solutions. It started when one of our main companies that we distribute for transitioned to become a safety company. We followed suit with this additional site to focus on safety products. We built Simplified Safety to provide more focused education and products to our customers. Read more about the new company.

What will happen to Simplified Building?

Don’t worry, Simplified Building Concepts is here to stay. In fact we hope to be more focused in a couple of areas once we transition all of our safety products to the new safety web site: 1) We want to bring back the focus on projects and DIY. That’s where SBC has its roots, and we don’t intend to lose that spirit. We’re hoping to regain some ground that might have been lost in adding safety products to this site. 2) Add more products that embody the basic building blocks of construction and modular building. 3) SBC needs and upgrade. We get so many compliments on our site already, but one thing you’ll notice about Simplified Safety is that it’s so much better. We hope to bring Simplified Building up to the same level as the new site takes root and bears fruit.

Many thanks to our customers

We really appreciate our customers and we hope that this will serve you better as we launch this new site that is specifically focused on safety products: Simplified Safety.

The bench is constructed of layers of oak plywood with solid oak around the outside to cover the edge of the plywood. There is 5 layers of plywood on the bench the top and bottom layers are 5′ by 30”. The inside layers of the bench are made up of scrap waste plywood that was left over from other projects. Instead of throwing out the waste we used it.

A great use of components old and new.

Modular metal railings constructed with Kee Klamp fittings have withstood the test of time and elements. One of the most prominent Kee Klamp railing installation is located on the America side of Niagara Falls. Here is what Mike Mumua, President of Kee Safety, Inc. says about this project:

This railing has been in place over 50 years on the USA side of Niagara Falls. This is a very harsh environment and as you can see it was not powder coated or had any additional corrosion protection. The photo clearly shows how good the product still looks. The US Park Service likes the modular capabilities of Kee Klamp and used it extensively at this park location. There is Kee railing along the Cave of the Winds & Bridal Veil falls that often gets damaged by ice. The Kee Klamp modular system allows for easy & quick repair to ensure the Park Service does a good job of protecting the tourism public.
