Google’s augmented reality (AR) glasses could open up a range of exciting, virtuous possibilities that help change the world for the better… or some of these.

Google is apparently developing augmented reality glasses that will have a camera and allow artificial images and information to overlay what you actually see. Initially, most people envision these being used for more “traditional” augmented reality kinds of experiences, like seeing tenants’ names when you look at apartment buildings, being able to look through walls and see wiring and plumbing (based on recorded plans), and GPS directions popping up magically in front of you (so you don’t take your eyes off the road when driving or bike riding). But of course… most technology is capable of a lot more than just the practical stuff.

Given Google has a rather messed up reputation with regard to privacy anyway, and to date hasn’t aggressively curated the Android app store to keep up questionable apps, maybe it’s worth investigating a few potential other uses for AR glasses.

X-ray glasses

If you can look at a building and see plumbing, why not look through clothes? They wouldn’t even have to have to be real images, just a pool of male and female naked bodies (and the Web is full of pictures like this, er, ah, so I’m told). The service
THIS IS NOT ORIGINAL CONTENT, BUT RATHER AN ARTICLE I FOUND TO BE AWESOME AND INFORMATIVE.

There are a countless number of tip calculators in the App Store, but what sets Billr apart from the crowd is that it offers a way to quickly and fairly split a bill, including tax and tip. By fairly, I mean that instead of an even split, each member of the group only pays for the items that they ordered and tax and tip on just those items.

As someone who often orders inexpensive entrees and water with my meals in an effort to save money, there is nothing more annoying than when the guy who ordered lobster and 3 cocktails announces that we’re just going to split the bill evenly because it’s easier that way. Well, now that guy can shut up and pay his fair amount, because with Billr for iPhone, calculating everyone’s share is quick and easy.

Upon launching Billr, you select how many people are in your party then move right along to entering the price of the items that each person ordered. The layout of the UI is perfect for quick entry. The bottom half of the screen remains as a keypad and the top half of the screen displays a scrollable list of tickets for 4 people at a time.

For $4.99 a month it basically lets you run full Windows on your iPad, and at blazing speeds to boot. This is the cloud done right. Mostly.

OnLive is a cloud-based gaming company, and what it has done is to take the same technology that shoots first person shooters to your screens and apply it to running apps over the cloud. The company leverages countless servers in data centers connected to gigabit ethernet to run various programs for you—including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Internet Explorer—and then it sends that video to your iPad. Essentially, it turns your iPad into a display for one of its servers.

What’s that mean in practice? First and foremost it means you can have Office on your iPad right now, today, and free, which was the promise of the original OnLive Desktop. You can edit documents, run video in PowerPoint presentations and basically do anything that you could if you were using Office on a desktop. You can use a software keyboard for input (which includes a Windows-centric keyboard layout) or hook up a bluetooth keyboard. It also recognizes handwriting, which is a neat trick.

OnLive Desktop Plus takes that functionality and adds something that
THIS IS NOT ORIGINAL CONTENT, BUT RATHER AN ARTICLE I FOUND TO BE AWESOME AND INFORMATIVE.

Buzz Contacts is a contacts app that’s actually useful: it’s faster, better and looks reaaaally good.

Buzz Contacts puts the traditional iOS contacts system on its head, making it infinitely more useful and faster. Its focus is getting you to contacting your contacts as fast and elegantly as possible, through whichever medium you decide to use: phone, SMS, email or FaceTime. The app lets you choose how to interact with your contacts, the traditional list view and the much mo’ better “grid view”, which gives you big honking tiles to quickly select who and how you want to contact. Tap, tap, tap and you’re already typing or calling away.

We love streaming services, but none of them have a perfect selection, and it would be nice if you could combine them all into one service. Tomahawk does this, starting off with your local library and letting you add extensions—called resolvers—to bring in libraries from services like Spotify, Grooveshark, Last.fm, Soundcloud, YouTube, Ex.fm, and even 4Shared. That way, you have the best of each library, without any of the holes. The player isn’t anything too special otherwise, but then again, neither is Spotify’s or Grooveshark’s.

You’ll need a premium account for the services like Spotify and Grooveshark, and you may need to grab the extensions from Tomahawk’s web site—some aren’t included with the program—but overall, it’s pretty simple to build up one streaming library to rule them all (now if only they had Rdio, too). Check out the video above to see it in action.

Tomahawk is a free download for all platforms.

Google can keep track of everything you’ve ever searched for using their Web History service, even if you’ve cleared the browser history on your iPhone, iPad, or PC. Now that Google is changing their privacy policy — which some view as an excellent simplification and standardization and others see as a disturbing data grab — it means your search results won’t be kept separately but potentially shared with each and every other Google service.

This protection was especially important because search data can reveal particularly sensitive information about you, including facts about your location, interests, age, sexual orientation, religion, health concerns, and more. If you want to keep Google from combining your Web History with the data they have gathered about you in their other products, such as YouTube or Google Plus, you may want to remove all items from your Web History and stop your Web History from being recorded in the future.

Storify is an interesting, blogging-like platform that lets you tell your story by mixing together media from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and the web. The website has been around for a little while, but now it’s also available on the iPad. Since most of the media included in your stories originated from a mobile device, it only makes sense to make the creation of these stories mobile as well.

Creating a story is simple. On the right side, you’ll gain quick access to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and the web. Find a tweet or photo that you want to add? Just drag it over to your to story and drop it in. Rearranging your media is as simple as dragging it up and down your story.

Once your story is complete, you can publish it and share links directly with Facebook and Twitter — and if you mentioned a Twitter user, they will be notified of being a part of your story.

This is a great new take on the idea of blogging and and I think Storify is off to a great start. I did notice, however, the the only media available from Facebook was photos. I’d like to see them include status updates as well — and maybe even the comments that come with your photos and updates.
