There isn't a job available of course, but she just starts working for the cafe by serving customers from outside the cafe by their cars.

Bui Khanh is a young Vietnamese man, who has left Vietnam to proof his luck in the United States. His wife Nguyet still is in Vietnam, and he sends her money so she can hopefully join him soon. Bui also appears in the Honk and Holler Opening Soon, and just as Vena, he wants to work there. He starts working fixing things for Caney and MollyO. He lives secretly in a church building, where he also starts to repair things, the church members and board are surprised more and more when the building starts looking better, and Bui also meets an old lady here who helps him with his English, in trade for fixing up the church.

All of the characters lifes are coming together in the cafe. Caney first looks suspiciously at Bui because he is Vietnamese, MollyO finds out her daughter is pregnant, Vena has to make piece with herself with the loss of her sister Helen, and Bui finds out that Nguyet is pregnant, but not from him.

Just as in her previous bestselling book Where The Heart Is, this book is full of remarkable characters. Though the book ends abruptly with a lot of loose ends; we never find out what happens to some of them, like for example, if Bui's wife Nguyet will arrive in America. This was just a disappointment and I would really have liked it if the author had written a real end to the story or made a sequel to it.

Despite the fact that Eggers was writing a story about his life, he was simultaneously making fun of the accepted form of memoir writing. Eggers leaves nothing untouched in his book, including the copyright page, which reads, “This is a work of fiction.” He goes on to explain, that, like anyone undertaking memoir, he could not possibly remember all the exact details of every act and conversation that he was involved in. Thus, in reading Eggers’s book, which is at times very sad, very disturbing, and very funny, readers are continually forced to ask themselves: Is this section true? Or is this the part that is fiction?

The sad parts of Eggers’s memoir are unmistakable. Eggers loses both his parents while he is in his early twenties. His parents die within weeks of one another and Eggers is left with a young brother to raise at a time when Eggers is not fully developed himself. The disturbing parts of his memoir involve friends and relatives who suffer mental depressions and threaten suicide. Others become ill and die. Some meet with accidents, such as falling several floors and surviving, but with handicaps.

As for the funny parts, they run throughout the story as Eggers exposes his wacky inner thoughts, which are often laced with paranoia.

For better or worse, Dave Eggers will always be known as the author of the quasi-fictional memoir “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius,” a 2000 bestseller.

Each character is drawn with authenticity and empathy, and McMillan pulls no punches about their collective bad judgment in choosing partners for romance.

After many vicissitudes, two of the heroines find love, but until then McMillan keeps us constantly guessing about which members of her lively quartet will be thus rewarded.
