Perched Headgear

Singapore is a nation obsessed with shopping as I think is well documented. In fact I illustrated when doing a walking tour of the city with my folks last weekend: every time I pointed at a building I was found to say the words, “and there’s a mall in there as well.”

Saturday Night Kids

We’ve been back in Singapore for a couple of months (thank goodness) and the place feels so like home I’ve not really felt the need to write on this site given that this place kinda feels like a ‘holiday’ diary.

Makati Randomness

Jo has already covered a lot of first impressions of Manila, along with various tortuous and waring trips to the low budget John Lewis that is Landmark. However, despite not venturing far from the flat due to the heat and my pursuit of web design greatness, I have noticed some marvelous randomness.

Manila - Landing with a Bump

Health warning – this blog is a bit grumpy. I think it’s called culture shock.

After living in Singapore for over a year, first impressions of Manila couldn’t help but be unfavourable, especially so after a week of merrily boozing with all our friends and generally feeling good Singapore vibes. The night before we left, we drunkenly arrived back at the flat with Jen and Lucy to donate them all the stuff we couldn’t take to Manila. We happily commandeered a luggage trolley and rode around Fraser Suites on it with Andy pulling. At one point we were in the lift when the doors closed and it went up to the 6th floor. 3 bemused Chinese people were greeted as the lift opened by 3 drunken English girls riding a luggage trolley that filled up the whole lift. We waved, they gamely waved back, and Jen took a photo of them which they politely smiled for. Then the lift went down again.

The Manila Diaries?

It’s been on the cards ever since we arrived in Singapore, and it looks certain that we’ll soon be headed to Manila. As such Jo and I thought it might be an idea for me to visit with her, before I move there totally blind.

Paradise in Low Season: Gili Islands Edition

Chinese New Year has come around again and a flurry of Red decorations, mice standing in for unphotogenic rats and, of course, shopping appeared throughout Singapore. As is traditional (if you’re not staying behind to get smashed) as expats we decided to head out of the country.

Singapore Bling

It has been interesting this year to experience a tropical Christmas. In some ways it has been good to escape Tesco starting their Christmas playlist in late July, and the Kerry Katona adverts for frozen bits of oddly shaped crap, but in other ways I have to say Singapore hasn’t quite lived up to Blighty for that quintessential Christmas experience.

Christmas in Singapore

I’m currently sitting at home looking out of the window, watching the December rain soak the city. Not so unusual for a December lunchtime you might think, until I remember that I’m in Singapore. However the rain makes it feel like home, there’s something wrong with Christmas in Singapore. Something very wrong indeed.

Football Widower

When you’re in a new culture, things change. You get used to the sweltering weather, walking to work and wearing shorts/dressing like a six year old all the time. It’s expected. What is not expected is the changes you see in your wife… however, fear not, this is not a post that is going to leave you feeling awkward and embarrassed.

Black Eyed Peas Featuring Click Five

Singapore may not exactly be on the world tour circuit for many bands, but every now and then a ‘big name’ will visit during a rapid race through Asia. Cliff Richard & Westlife were, non-ironically, attended by Jane before we got here and we went to see Christina in June.
