<itunes:summary>The Aquarium features weekly; the finest and most accomplished singers and songwriters from the Pacific Northwest. We will focus on getting to know the artists and what drives them to pursue the life of being a songwriter. Each week, we will bring other aspects to the listening audience such as education into what it takes to be successful in a highly competitive music industry, obscure facts about popular artists and a sense of humor and entertainment that only artists can identify with but everyone will enjoy. In the end, we all love music…we want to create a holistic picture of what it is like from the artists perspective.</itunes:summary>

Today’s Guest: SweetKiss Momma Today’s guest artists are none other, than Tacoma’s own beloved Sweet Kiss Momma. Their brand of Rootsy, Southern-Soul tinged Rock-n-Roll, combines; classic blues riffs, gospel harmonies, and funk breakdowns, with keen musicality, to unashamedly display their era of influences. This five-piece powerhouse proves that high-octane, Southern-style rock-n-roll can come from anywhere….even…the Pacific Northwest. Their debut album “Revival Rock”, has been glowingly reviewed internationally, and has been one of CD Baby’s top selling albums since it’s release in May 2010, landing multiple times atop both the “Roots Rock” and “Southern Rock” charts, while reaching as high as #2 on the “Rock” chart, and twice in to the Top-10 overall. Driven by a delicate balance of powerful riffs, and raw, honest lyricism, SweetKiss Momma is cultivating a large and loyal following, easily endearing fans ranging from lovers of classic Southern rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers, to those who enjoy the more modern, earthy sounds of bands such as The Black Crowes and Kings of Leon. Please welcome to the Aquarium…one of my [...]

Today’s Guest: Voxxy Vallejo QUOTE “dazzling vocals and blistering guitar solos… it is Voxxy’s soul-piercing, Joplin-esque’ voice that takes a commanding lead onstage; with Vallejo’s stinging blues and rock riffs balancing nicely with the wow factor of her emotive, wailing vocals.” END QUOTE If their music was the soundtrack for your life, you’d be guaranteed a good time and a crrrraaaaazzzyyy ride. Heavy blues laced southern Rock-N-Roll that is perfect for sweaty summer nights and back yard BBQ’s. Hot and sticky…Voxxy’s vocals entice and forbid while Gene’s guitar licks interplay with her voice, both teasing and encouraging the song right out of her. What started as an online collaboration while living in different states has now become an unstoppable force in the local music scene. Voxxy Vallejo is now a 5 piece powerhouse of a rock-n-roll band, playing live across the Puget Sound and beyond. Their music combines Rock and Heavy Blues and their live show displays the passion, talents, and amazing stage presence of both Gene and Voxxy …leaving the audience with no doubt that this band really loves what they do. With one CD released and the next one in production they are currently planning a [...]

Today’s Guest: The Breaklites After many years of recording and playing music separately, John McRae (Guitarist/Producer) & Cruel (MC) decided to join forces and craft an EP. During the process of recording the EP, a name for the group was coined…The BreakLites. After a phone call to a local DJ and good friend Craig Vialle, The BreakLites had a DJ. Following the release of the first EP New Dogs, Old Tricks the guys immediately returned to the studio, and popped out a few months later with their debut full length record à Pack Your Bags. After a few months of playing clubs, bars, and house parties around the Northwest in support of the new record, The BreakLites took no break, and went right back to recording a new album titled Robots and Daytons. Deciding to move away from their traditional bluesy, boom-bap, hip hop sound for this project, The BreakLites made the record with summer in mind. Creating a unique blend of up-tempo, electro-pop beats with John’s funk inspired guitar, and Cruels high-energy flow, The BreakLites created a record that lacks nothing but ordinary. …and TODAY, they are sharing [...]

Today’s Guest: Morrison Boomer “Life, oh it goes, so fast…waste no time in the past, take your time, make it last and when life gives you a chance and fills your glass…down the hatch.” *Profound words from TODAY’s Guests! Now, with new members in place they are ready to take their music to the stage…with albums...Someday Epic…Deuce…Down the Hatch & Live at the L.A.B…. please welcome to The Aquarium With King Fish and Big Mike with Mr. Von filling in for KingFish Morrison Boomer Podcast of [...]

Today’s guest had a profound influence on rock guitar playing in the 80’s! Known by many guitarists as the “two handed guitarist,” he was an innovator of the hammer-on method… as well as many other advanced techniques. Originally a bass player, he moved onto guitar the actual day that Jimmy Hendrix passed on…September 18th, 1970. At the ripe young age of fifteen, he started emulating Harvey Mandel’s technique and began studying theory and jazz under Don Mock. Subsequently, Mock moved to LA and founded GIT. Today’s guest was one of the first students to graduate from GIT along with Jennifer Batten…who, by the way, SWEARS by our guests technique. Our guest’s technique was born in 1978 and was referred to as the “two handed tapping technique.” Working with greats like Greg Lake of ELP and Savoy Brown…among with many others, he won the guitarist of the year in 1983. In 1984, he began jamming with a group of other talented musicians. While jogging one day, David Lee Roth heard their music and insisted that they open for Van Halen on their up coming tour. With no name, the group had to come up with one on the fly…hence, AUTOGRAPH! [...]

Today’s Singer Songwriter has been performing professionally for eight years. Her love for the entertainment industry was realized early in life. She has been performing in musical productions since she was a child and she fronted her first band at the age of 17. As well as singing for Raeanns Groove, she enjoys composing her own material and performing the music she has written. She has a way of drawing the audience in and making everybody feel welcome. She is the quintessential performer with an amazing voice and great stage presence. Please join me in welcoming the beautiful and talented…oh, and fellow Kelso High School Graduate to the aquarium… Raeann Phillips Podcast of Episode #33 With Raeann Phillips http://www.facebook.com/phillipspettitr

Our Singer Songwriter Guests were quoted as follows ”Their voices wrap together like velvet and burnished wood, and they sprinkle spare strings around everything. Quality songwriters, Elk and Boar are up-and-comers precisely because they sound like they’ve been doing this for decades.” In 2010, our two guests today joined up to create music that celebrated their vocal polarity and common loves. Their first full length CD… “Room To Start” released in March of 2011, is a soulful collection of emotional songs that emanate hope and lament. Since combining their talents, the two have kept busy playing locally with many of their favorite NW artists, traveling to Austin for SXSW and to the East Coast for 1band 1brand to play the “138 Listening Lounge.” Their eventful summer was punctuated when they were added to the lineup at Doe Bay Fest 2011 and City Arts Festival. Once upon a time…there were two shot glasses, on one was etched an elk, on the other, a boar. Please help me in welcoming one of Gina Belliveau’s favorite artists ever and our guests today, Kirsten Wenlock and Travis Barker… Together, they are….Elk and [...]

As well as being one of the most talented singer/songwriters I’ve ever met… today’s guest is the front man for local bands Klover Jane…Jar of Flies , and Michael Wilton of Queensryches’ band- Wratchethead. Breaking the boundaries of just about every musical genre from metal to blues he has an insatiable ability to write and perform songs that incorporate authentic showmanship with raw energy. Whether he is alone with his guitar or fronting one of his many projects… whether he is performing blues, country, metal, rock, alternative, singer/songwriter… Rane Stone has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the Seattle music scene and is greatly adored by his thousands of fans…Of course, I’m talking about Rane Stone. But…..today, we are going to something a little different. Rane has agreed to give us a one on one one exclusive into the “behind the scenes,” if you will, of Rane Stone. We are going to break this interview into two Episodes.
Rumored to have played with the one and only James Coates, today’s singer songwriter guest is the epitome of classic crossover country and rock. With the spirit of America under his feet and the flexibility of English rock and roll in his hands, he crafts and performs original music with ease and grace. Years of experience and talent collide here to create this eclectic collection of works delivered with excellent guitar work, powerful vocals and traditional folk/Country/Rock songwriting style. One of my favorite lyrics of his… “Wash your face first, then your ass!” …demonstrating his great sense of humor! With stage presence that’ll put a smile on your face every time and stories that will keep you engaged to his very last note…our guest has been performing for many years and is adored not only by his fans, but his peers. A true singer / songwriter…with the best piece of advice for musicians ever….and I quote, “Shut up and do the gig!” End Quote…. Welcome to The Aquarium “Hourglass Records” Recording Artist: Karl Thurmond Podcast of Epidsode #28 With Karl! http://www.karlthurmond.com http://country-albums.com/karl-thurmond-albums/ http://www.hourglass-records.com/ http://www.facebook.com/karlthurmond

As the guitarist for the Randy Oxford Band, our singer songwriter guest today is one of the hottest young guitar-slingers in the region. His style is spirited and energetic, a skillful blend of blues with jazz, rock, funk, and latin. With a smooth, soulful voice and a knack for writing songs he will speak to YOUR heart…whether the words are in English - OR - Spanish. QUOTE “My dream was to play The Blues!!! Now I am playing with THE RANDY OXFORD BAND. Is it not great? Now I am playing for the universe. The universe is close to the people, the music is the reason, THE MUSIC IS THE HARMONY OF THIS UNIVERSE and you are my universe, you are my music, and you are my family!” END QUOTE Influenced by bands such as…El Tri, Alejandro Lora, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Clapton, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, White Stripes, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Dream Theatre, Pantera, Metallica and Black Label Society…JUST, to name a few…. He still puts his father at the top of the list [...]

Our singer songwriter guest today said this…QUOTE “I just have this endless desire to write an earworm of a melody and lace it with compelling lyrics. If I can write something that moves me then there’s a chance that it might do the same for someone else and that’s what I’m after.” END QUOTE L.A.’s Music Connection Magazine offered up a favorable review of this artists debut record “Miles and Minutes,” referring to him as a “confident and assured recording artist” whose music is “earnest and soul searching with a high production value.” That same value landed one of his original tunes, “Good For Something” a placement in an episode of a primetime television show on ABC. With distinct vocals, soulful melodies and heartfelt lyrics….his live shows keep you entertained with a confident stage presence that combines the right mix of honest sincerity and comedic banter. Most shows for Nick revolve around just a mic and an acoustic guitar with the exception of some of the larger venues for which he calls upon some of the same talented musicians who accompanied him on his record. Another Quote… “The intimacy of just an acoustic guitar and a raw vocal is [...]

Our Singer Songwriter guest today is best known as the founder of CD Baby, but more recently for his TED talks and articles at DerekSivers.org. He’s a passionate learner and experimenter. Driven to understand life better, and share what he learns. He judges himself by how much useful stuff he creates. An interesting side note….Tests say he’s I.N.T.J.….an acronym for introversion, intuition, thinking and judgment. INTJs are, actually, one of the rarest of the sixteen personality types, and account for only about 1–4% of the population! A professional musician (and circus clown) since 1987, he started CD Baby by accident in 1998 when he was selling his own CD on his website, and friends asked if he could sell theirs, too. CD Baby was the largest seller of independent music on the web, with over $100M in sales for over 150,000 musician clients. After he won the 2003 World Technology Award, Esquire Magazine’s annual “Best and Brightest“ cover story said, “Derek Sivers is changing the way music is bought and sold… one of the last music-business folk heroes.” In 2008, he sold CD Baby to focus on his new ventures to benefit musicians, including [...]

From Seattle, Washington, our singer songwriter guests today hit us on all sides with an eclectic mix of styles from straight ahead rock in the vain of Pink Floyd and King Crimson to rap infused rock tracks. With 4 EP’s in the last four years they have an amazing range of music to share with us. Utilizing hip & current sounds… mixed with authentic retro flavoring and intelligent witty vocals, it is IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST what these four cats have to offer… Review after review, the question is always the same…”Why isn’t this band all over the charts?” The secret weapon in this band is the players themselves. Each of whom add unique talents to the sum of this addictive music project, with mature rock riffs evocative of the best of the 60′s- 90′s combined with a hip and current approach , infectious vocal melodies rhythms and styles are coursing through the veins of this band. They are a MUST ADD staple to your rock catalog. Original doesn’t do this band justice, they are original, but they are CUTTING EDGE original…unique and worthy of YOUR attention. They are a prime example of why we like to showcase independent singers and [...]

It is NO WONDER that our singer songwriter guests today have been satisfying crowds in clubs, bars and coffee houses around the Northwest. The lead singer, Alissa Jandt, is a classically trained vocalist with a decade of conditioning under her belt, while guitarist Jason Green comes from a family of musicians and has been playing since the age of fifteen. Everything about this duo is versatile from the way Allisa’s vocals float off the surface of Jason’s guitar lines, to the way in which the accompaniment loops around itself making Jason’s one guitar sound like a room full of players. It takes attentive precision to create decent polyphony using a guitar and a few pedals. But Jason has mastered this art, and accessorizes the duo’s shows using absolutely no pre-recorded tracks. Everything this duo does onstage is completely live and in the moment. With the release of their first CD “Here I Am,” Alissa and Jason have entered the realm of serious artists…distinguishing themselves from the throngs of other coffee shop acoustic duos. They claim to have been influenced by bands from the Beatles [...]
