In it, I was forced to seek higher ground as a giant tsunami neared the city. I was accompanied by some other character(s), but eventually sought refuge in a large, pyramid-shaped radio tower...</p> <p></p> <p>I ran up all its stairs, "picking up" people along the way, and seeing the waves and waters of the tsunami rise higher with each floor I passed. Nobody seemed aware of what was going on, so some listened to my warnings, while others didn't.</p> <p>When I reached the top, I looked out from a circular window and prayed that the tower didn't collapse from the impact of the waves. I could feel the tower creak and strain as the waters violently crashed against it. I tried calling some family members on my mobile, who weren't with me, but to no avail. However, a flash in my mind's eye then assured me that they were okay.</p> <p>The people that were with me were a bit shaken up, but I remained calm and continued praying for all of us. The tsunami eventually ended and my soul was transported out of its body. (As a sidenote, the setup of the theatre space  reminded me of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inside_the_Actors_Studio" target="_blank">Inside The Actors Studio</a>. As the afternoon progressed, the audience got more and more engaged with the films shown. These are my thoughts.</p> <p>At one point, Lawlor said that he was more interested in <em>how</em> a story was told, as opposed to the story itself. But what drives story? The elements used to tell the story, or the story itself? The director said that, when telling a story, it's very crucial what medium (i.e. 35mm film, animation, web, TV, etc.) you choose.</p> <p>The director expressed a feeling of storytelling (in terms of drama and dialogue) becoming less and less important in the filming world. That may be so but, in gaming, more provocative storytelling is becoming increasingly important. Dr. Dan Pinchbeck, an academic and mod-writer for a new experimental game called <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8tqnmkMgsg" target="_blank"><em>Dear Esther</em></a> says,</p> <blockquote> <p><em>"Story isn't just an afterthought, or just a means of papering over the cracks, but a genuinely powerful means of making games more engaging for the player." <span style="font-size: xx-small;">(p.31, <span style="font-family: mceinline;">May 18, GameInformer)</span></span></em></p> </blockquote> <p>According to Lawlor, film is lacking "authenticity" in the way stories are told, while, according to Pinchbeck, games are lacking authentic stories. It looks like the two may be a match made in heaven.</p> <p>Lawlor's films all seemed to have a very similar feel to them: slow, poetic and "raw." On the first film screened, <em>Brown Owl</em>, I was a bit impatient because the pace was very slow and a bit too "artsy" for my liking. However, once I was provided with context (English pastoral impressionist painting influence of everyday life), I understood the reasoning behind Lawlor's slow-moving, continuous shots. Using the same signature style - of slow-moving, continuous shots - Lawlor is able to capture a lot of depth and emotion in very simple civic locations.</p> <p>In <em>Tiong Bahru</em>, the music captivated me the most. It really helped tie in all the different characters and elements of the story, which is why I asked, "When it comes to film, does it matter whether the music is thought about first or after?" Essentially, the director's answer was 'no.' Sometimes a piece of music can inspire a story, as is the case with music videos, but then there are instances where a piece of footage or film inspires a composer or musician first.</p> <p>In my studies as an animator, I was taught to think about music/score first, even though the Japanese, and many other film-makers, insert it last. Either method seems neither right nor wrong but, as the director said, what matters most is the WHY. If you can flesh that out, it appears as though all the elements of a story flow harmoniously into one another - having a healthy balance of both control and freedom. Some of the themes that spoke to me the most were: seeking revenge, finding balance (both inner and outer), self-discipline, society, and right vs. wrong (fine line to truth). From <em>Spiderman: Edge of Time</em> to <em>Mass Effect 2</em> and <em>L.A. Noire</em>, it seemed that, along with the rise of realistic 3D, the need for deeper stories was rising too.</p> <p></p> <p> </p> <p>Storytelling has been a core part of culture since mankind first learned how to communicate but, in a world filled with information overload, it seems like we are yearning for stories that help make sense of it all. Not only that, but stories that make us active participants, not simply passive viewers.</p> <p>I always believed that storytelling was a powerful practice, but I'm starting to see how it can be applied to many other fields from web design, to social media, and mobile games. Heck, almost everything. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lasseter" target="_blank">John Lasster</a>, American animator, director and the Chief Creative Officer at <em>Pixar</em> and <em>Walt Disney Animation Studios</em>, couldn't have said it better,</p> <blockquote> <p><em>"<span class="body">If you're sitting in your minivan, playing your computer animated films for your children in the back seat, is it the animation that's entertaining you as you drive and listen? No, it's the <strong> storytelling</strong>. That's why we put so much importance on story. No amount of great animation will save a bad story."</span></em></p> </blockquote> <p><span class="body">That goes for any story, in any field.
