Traveling Frogs Mural – Part 1 of 3

By request I had previously offered up some closer views of the various monkeys in the Monkey Mural. So, now I’ll do the same for the Traveling Frogs Mural. The frogs are a lot smaller in scale than the monkeys are. The mural covers all four walls.

The largest painting is that of North America.

There are too many frogs so I split them into two groups; those in the 48 contiguous states and those who aren’t (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska). The US frogs include a biker in the northwest, a Southwest pilot in Arizona, a hobo hitch-hiking across the south, frogs immortalized within Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty and a bull-riding cowboy in Texas.

The other frogs on this wall include an Eskimo emerging from an igloo, a dog-sledding Mountie, one enjoying the Pacific coast of Mexico and a hula-clad windsurfer. A Viking explores from the adjacent wall, a pirate trolls the Caribbean and, just of the heckuvit, an Alien frog hides behind the door.

Water Soluble Pencils

Some people aren’t sure what I’m talking about when I mention water soluble pencils. They look and work like regular ol’ color pencils except if you dip a paintbrush in water and go over them they dissolve. Regular ol’ pencils will just get wet. In case you were wondering what the pencil drawing (October 21, 2009, “Seated Woman in Color“) looked like before I added the wash, well, here it is. If I were going to leave it as a pencil-only drawing I would have 1) used different paper; this is very coarse watercolor paper, and 2) I would have added a lot more detail. You can see a regular ol’ color pencil example, September 27, 2009, “South Padre“.

This is a hybrid drawing/painting. It was done with water soluble pencils finished with a delicate wash. Even though it utilizes a brush and painting styles it is more of a drawing than a painting.

Pirate Choir

Choir directors are constantly advising how to purposefully mispronounce words so they sound better when sung. This is especially important to us folks from Texas since our words often take on lives of their own. One such direction concerns words ending in an ‘R’. They’d much rather hear an “uh” sound than an “er.” I suppose that’s why we don’t come across many pirate choirs.
