This afternoon Beth Jones hosted her Vintage Society Holiday Trunk Show at siteLA. The trunk show was enthusiastically enjoyed by dozens of society girls who scavenged the clothing racks and tables full of accessories for hidden treasures. Even fellow siteLA resident Dorothy Le made a surprise appearance to check out Beth’s amazing vintage finds.

Judging by the bright sunshine that illuminated siteLA, it was hard for anyone to believe that it was the middle of December and even harder for everyone to believe that the site is coming to a close in roughly a week. Today’s trunk show helped remind all of us how special of a place siteLA is and how much we are truly going to miss hosting such amazing events such as those from The Vintage Society.

With that said check out some photos from today’s trunk show and be sure to stop our closing party next week!

as the year wraps up for siteLA, i have taken some time to reflect. i think i’m going to start a new blog, which will touch upon some of the themes of my siteLA blog- bicycle culture, women and cycling, bicycle advocacy and activism, bicycle and pedestrian planning, and los angeles.

as i develop my skills, become more involved and become more effective in transforming los angeles, i want to keep a record of that development. i also want people to be able to give me feedback, understand the process and be with me along the way.

in this technological age, where things happen in the blink of an eye, i want to capture the important moments, and remember to rejoice and reflect on life and existence.

on a bit of a tangent, check out this video, which shows how to put your bike on the bus…it brings me back to when i first learned how to do this…and how much further i am along the way…in terms of biking in los angeles. enjoy!

<![endif]-->Los Angeles , Bicycles, and the Environment

From an early age, I have been passionate about and actively involved in the green movement. For the last six years, I have dedicated my time, first as a student, and now as a professional, towards transforming Los Angeles to become a truly bicycle friendly community. As a Vietnamese-American woman native to Los Angeles, I have the unique ability to understand the shortcomings of my city, but more importantly, I have ideas and goals to transcend them.

Bicycling is the best individual thing we can do to reduce our impact on climate change. It is also one of the best ways we can reduce congestion and air pollution and improve air quality and public space in the city. If we want to improve our quality of life and made a huge positive impact on the environment, we all must take significant steps to increase our bicycle use, while concurrently reducing our auto use, across this nation and around the world.

At UCLA, I was a student organizer, working on issues ranging from climate change to transportation, as the co-chair of the largest and most effective environmental group on campus, E3- Ecology, Economy, Equity. In one role, as a leader of the Bicycle Advocacy Committee at UCLA, I pushed the campus to implement lasting bicycle improvements as well as cultivate the local cycling community.

Now, as Planning and Policy Director of Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, I lobby politicians, consult with city government, and activate cyclists to develop and enhance bicycle infrastructure and education. In addition, at the end of this year, I will complete my one year as SiteLA Visionary in Residence, a fellowship program sponsored by Quiksilver, which has allowed me to host creative events, safety workshops, and bicycle rides to promote awareness of the bicycling community in the mainstream.

I am proud of the contributions I have made to help Los Angeles become a more livable community. In spite of the challenges of working in a city as vast and sprawling as Los Angeles, there exists a story of a city and its inhabitants redeeming themselves. Even though some may think Los Angeles is an unfit place to ride bicycles, I know that with innovation, collaboration, and firm commitment, I can help Los Angeles reach its potential to become a green city, full of bicycles, clean air, open space, and thriving community.

Guests were greeted into the space with a vintage motorcycle display, an open bar compliments of Veev, Barefoot Wine, and Peroni, and then finally enticed to view Krystyne Zurian’s amazing automobile design showcase. The Shifting Gears opening event reached far beyond any experience that siteLA has ever hosted. The exhibition is now on display at siteLA and if you were not able to come to the opening event be sure to come check it out this week. We look forward to seeing you!
