I may not have much time left to post this blog due to snow being forecast, however not in Surrey. Yesterday, I went out in the garden and I found, much to my surprise, raspberries on my canes. I know that you can get either spring or autumn fruiting raspberry canes, but to have them fruiting in December is something else.

My style of gardening can best be described as that of 'benign neglect'. Put the plant in, preferably in favourable condition, ie when it's raining, that's when I usually seem to have that spare 5 minutes to go and plant something in the garden. Then it is watered, when remembered and then usually totally ignored. Finally if it survives, the need to remember what it was that was actually planted there and if it dies, to pull it out and to repeat the process with another new plant.

Having said that, there are several plants on which I have lavished loving and tender care, principally our hedge. We have about 150 feet street frontage and after we bought the house we realised that most of the hedge was either dead or on its last legs. Being on display to the street can totally improve one's gardening skills. We now have a lovely hedge of leylandii, laurel, pyracnatha and escallonia. The pyracantha was the big success story.

Back to the title though, it's not just the raspberries which are acting in an unseasonal manner. Our lobelia is having a lovely time, mixing with the primroses, the camellias are budding and an unidentified shrub has its flowers. All in all, a bit of a mixed up garden, but it does look lovely!

Back to our lovely websites, Fabric and Ribbon has gorgeous half metre packs of material, several different packs and themes now available, come and take a look. All packs have a 10% discount over buying the material separately.

There is still time to order Azique's delightful Christmas hairbands and scrunchies, each supplied in its own matching organza bag - a wonderful treat for any little girl and a festive stocking filler.

The children have been watching the Great British Bake Off and the Junior version as well.
They have taken to this with great gusto and glee discussing the contestants and recipes in great detail. This is where I thought they would leave it but I got the book anyway.

They completely surprised me. They have read, re-read and read again the book. Marked the recipes they want to cook, which is most of the sweet ones and then pruned it down to their favourite 20 or so. Then the cooking started.

Alice was the first with Queen of Sheba, page 278, continued p280. 'A luxuriously, rich, elegant chocolate and almond cake.' This took her the whole of Saturday afternoon to make, involving whisking egg whites and folding them in and making chocolate shards. The result was a truly stunning cake both in taste and appearance.

The cookbook is now decorated with flakes of chocolate and Alice's annotations.

Back to the news on Azique and Fabric and Ribbon. Azique has gorgeous personalised Christmas sacks, perfect for all the presents Father Christmas will bring plus sweet Christmas print hairbands and scrunchies in their own organza gift bags - perfect for stocking fillers.

Fabric and Ribbon now has Christmas half metre packs of all of our Christmas fabrics, in four different combinations, just perfect for all your Christmas crafting projects. These packs are a wonderful 10% cheaper than if you bought the fabric separately. Hurry up and grab your bargain. Free postage over £20.

No wonder I've got fillings. And with this sort of cooking, I'm likely to have a few more.

So here she is, mixing it up. Better have a bit more treacle, eh? I mean, Golden Syrup. Did you know the logo on the tin is a dead lion with a swarm of flies around it? It's true.

Now give it all a good stir and a bit of heat - all supervised of course. This time it's Flapjacks. Next on the list is Treacle Tart.

At last - time to serve

It looks good - it smells good - and by golly it tastes good!

Now, who remembers where that slogan comes from?

Whilst you're thinking about the answer, check out what's just gone up at Fabric & Ribbon -

Well, I've moaned enough about the weather this year, but now at last we can raise a cheer and head off to the seaside. Nobody complain that it's too hot, now! It won't last long, so make the most of it. I can hear West Wittering calling, so the skimboard is going to get one last hurrah this year. See you on the beach.

To get in the mood, here are our seaside fabrics to look at again, as well as some new ones we've just put up

I don't know if it's because I'm not totally au fait with what is meant to be in season when, but my strawberries and raspberries are having a second crop. There were more strawberries a few days ago, but the slugs got them – a tasty autumn treat for them. As for the raspberries, they are producing in abundance – raspberries and ice-cream for us tonight on a chilly evening.

Is this a result of global warming, a quirk of Nature or is it because I've got repeat flowering plants and didn't read the instructions, as always? I have no idea, but anyway, it's a great treat to get raspberries at any time of the year in your garden and even more so when you weren't expecting them.
Long live whatever quirk of Nature produced them. Off to pick them now before the birds get them.

Since I don't know whether it's summer or autumn, I'll let you know about some plain colours which are useful all year round. We've put up a new royal blue and deep red. Pictures below.

That may be the dream, but it's not the reality! It's a case of jumping out of bed, waking the children, hurrying them through breakfast, finding all the bits of school uniform, books, sports kit, musical instruments and then off to school.

Unfortunately the after school clubs don't match up for them this term, so I am spending a lot of time after school in the park waiting for the other child to finish. Not a problem at the moment but it will be when we change the clocks.

Still, inbetweentimes I manage to get on with some things - on Fabric & Ribbon for example, we've recently put up some more fabrics - here are some pics to click

The schools are soon going to be breaking up for that long hot sunny holiday you remember from childhood. No? Me, neither. Well, maybe we did get lucky now and then, but I do remember shivering on a windy Welsh beach more. And one time I remember being made to run up and down the sand at Lowestoft after I came out of the sea until I had stopped being blue .

The British live in hope, however. Hope that they pick the right week for sunshine and warmth without having to fly or drive to another country to get it. Since it's a bit of a lottery, when the weekends are hot, you have to make the most of them.

That's what we did at Easter. Just to remind you that Britain can be hot, here are some pictures of the children at West Wittering on Easter Saturday, this year. It really was that hot and they really did get in the sea with the rubber dinghy. Even more amazingly, so did we!

<img border="0" height="243" m$="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWQcOh54kFs/TchYO1JEqjI/AAAAAAAAAdg/hkKLq2UKrhk/s320/23+Apr+2011_3068.JPG" width="320" />

The new skim board provided endless fun, not as easy at it sometimes seems and it certainly hurts if you get it wrong and fall off the back. West Wittering is a great place to use these, as you need a big area of water a couple of inches deep.

<img border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0XPGprbdUD8/Tchlp2FghhI/AAAAAAAAAhU/fgF_CccLULo/s320/25+Apr+2011_3131.JPG" width="240" /><img border="0" height="320" m$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FgDPXhZHCqA/Tchl1vrtluI/AAAAAAAAAhg/Aj8wGZVXB9Q/s320/25+Apr+2011_3050.JPG" width="238" />

If you want to find some fabrics with a seaside feel, then look no further than www.fabricandribbon.co.uk/the-sea-fabrics.php and Azique cushions. Here are some examples!

The washing machine will need to be very sturdy, and the carpets and cushions had best be mud coloured. Why, you think, why do they have to always go and get covered in mud?

There's nothing you can do about it...

Before children, I didn't really take part in long country walks full of mud and trees, pubs and clubs were a little more interesting. And for the first few years of motherhood, I managed to keep most of the mess, dirt and mud relatively under control. But once they were past toddling and into running, it became a losing (and muddy) battle.

I say mud and boys - Alice qualifies as a tomboy, at least as far as this topic goes. If there is one tiny puddle in an otherwise parched and drought stricken landscape, they will find it. After all, they think, that's what the walk is for, isn't it?

Over at Fabric and Ribbon, we now have three Swafing Canstein ginghams alongside our Swafing Caravelle stripes. Here they are:

Or rather they took up sailing a year ago and I have just joined in with them. Actually, I did go on a sailing holiday BC and BH (before children and before husband) but what I learned two weeks sailing in Greece many moons ago is a little rusty now.

We are the proud owners (the children are the proud owners) of three Optimists, two in use and one semi-retired since the seams need taping up and neither myself or my husband will have any will left to live if we repaint the boat again.

Now that Alice and Jack are getting to a racing level, it all gets more exciting and I've decided to brush up my sailing again by taking a course at the club - Papercourt Sailing Club in Ripley. Luckily this is Saturday morning which is when children with Oppies (Optimists) sail. The weather was a bit lively last Saturday and I have so far counted 5 bruises, one cut and one lump from the morning.

The children appeared unscathed, but I have a little more street cred with them now I can handle a boat. Who knows, perhaps they'll listen more at home? Well - I can dream, can't I?

Whilst we're on the subject of sailing , we have some beautiful fabrics on this theme which are well worth a look at http://www.fabricandribbon.co.uk/ and some cushions on a nautical theme at http://www.azique.co.uk/

"And husband! - I like that, don't even get my name mentioned - "
Thank you, darling, have a muffin.
"Ooh thanks!"
Never fails.

"Munch, munch, munch, munch....."
Anyway, we 've always liked chocolate muffins. As you can tell. Occasionally, I try to make something that is slightly more healthy – like redcurrant muffins - they were terrific, but healthy and scrumptious don't always turn out to be such a perfect match. So, back to chocolate muffins.

Alice and Jack can now make these themselves, but the kitchen is usually a shade of brown afterwards from the cocoa and various chocolate drops have landed on the floor. Not many though, the children are very careful not to waste too many of these. They're very keen on decorating cakes - for example, see right and below.

Fun though it is baking with them, it's also nice to bake when the offspring are at school. Cooking can be relaxing when you are alone, radio on, under no time pressure.... and it works! This scenario doesn't often happen, but when it does, joy in baking resurfaces.

Now where's my cocoa and chocolate drops?

And whilst I'm looking for those, why don't you have a look at the new fine stripes that have just gone up on Fabric and Ribbon - they're tasty too!
The name causes some amusement with my children, but the house and gardens are amazing.

The house is 400 years old with dark panelling and a long gallery full of old portraits at the top of the house. Wandering around, you can sense the spirit of the people who once lived there.

Outside on a sunny day is great fun for children, especially when there is a Treasure Hunt involving chocolate in the gardens.

Afterwards we took a short stroll to the tow-path on the Thames. We sat on a bench discussing the boats and canoes drifting past over an ice-cream – on a hot day like that one you absolutely cannot beat an ice-cream.

Back to the garden -

I don't have quite as much topiary in my little patch, (ie none!) but I thought about doing some, and it's the thought that counts, isn't it? And I do get inspired now and then by the plants and trees on display and decide to take a leaf out of their book. So at home there are herbs and flowers here and there which remind me of visits to one or other of the Trust's stately homes. And I do love the tea-rooms - because I love tea!

Back at home, we've put up some more fabrics at Fabric and Ribbon - some lovely polka dots. Go see!

It's a bit different these days. There are the pre-packed bags of Haribos everywhere, but not many of the pick and mix since Woolies went to the great High Street in the sky. However, we have made a great find which brings it all back. Wandering through Greenwich with the children, we discovered – Mr Simm's Olde Sweet Shoppe!

Greenwich - but this is not Mr Simm

It is only small but packed with just about every type of sweet imaginable. Our children and plenty of adults spend absolutely ages in there choosing what to have. There are jars around the walls and a large pick and mix under the counter, served by very helpful assistants. Lots of new things for the kids to look at and some old favourites the adults never thought they'd see again. I particularly liked the Fizzy Bricks which reminded me of the old Lemfizz squares. Only 5p! Sweet!

Our children would go to Greenwich just for this shop and then go home without seeing or doing anything else and count it as a 'good day out'!

Lacock - beware Toxic Waste bubblegum!

However, I must warn you about the Bubble Gum we bought at Lacock. If you would like to see adults reduced to speechlessness, with contorted faces, try 'Toxic Waste'. It's like sucking a lemon, but worse, much worse. The title is no exaggeration, in fact, if anything, it doesn't describe this product accurately (I can't call it a sweet). It is just like something that Dennis the Menace would have. You have been warned!

Back at base, we have put up some new fresh cushions for the new season at Azique, and at Fabric and Ribbon, if you like cats, or know someone who does, you'll love our new feline fabrics.
We again pack the bags, find the Nintendos, count the pocket money, this last very important because at Greenwich there is a craft market every weekend. For Alice this will be the highlight of the day. Having been a few weeks previously with some of her friends, she is planning to buy all the things I vetoed first time around.

At the observatory there is a camera obscura (you can see the roof of it near the time ball in the picture above) showing a picture (or should I say live video) of the Old Royal Naval College down the hill near the river.

Given the naval connections, we should have expected to bump into the chap below. We couldn't get him to smile though.

As we're on a naval theme, now is a good time to let you know that in "The Sea" collection at Fabric and Ribbon we have some new designs, Ripple Sand and Seaside Beach Huts. And look out for our new cushions at Azique for the Spring.

Not my usual sort of picture, but of historical interest, and there is an exhibition of pioneering photography at the Abbey, which I found fascinating. Of course, the children found other things to be interested in, like this stream which flows across a road leaving the village.

The village itself is a museum piece, with a certain lack of mod cons. No cash machines for example, but delightful old sweet shops and pubs with features such as a giant hamsterwheel next to the fire in which a dog runs to turn a spit over the fire.

But back to the abbey, which although it stopped being an abbey thanks to Henry VIII, still keeps much of its original building, including the cloister in the centre.

It's not just ordinary brown mud but heavy, sticky BLACK mud which sticks to everything.

I told him not to be a stick-in-the-mud

Having never been to Wicken Fen, even though I grew up in Cambridge, we decided it was time to remedy this. It's one of Britain's oldest nature reserves, with reedbeds, boardwalks, lodes or waterways, and a windpump (looks like a windmill). Wellingtons are a must.
The visitors leaflet gives a choice of 3 different walks and naturally, we chose the muddiest. Alice had a poster on her wall for months of a pony at Wicken Fen so we went off in search of them. We found the Highland cattle (very shaggy with big horns) and lots of birds, but no ponies.

Hide 'n' Seek

There are a lot of bird hides dotted around and we went in all of them. Unfortunately our bird knowledge is rather limited but in one hide a very kind bird watcher leant us some binoculars and pointed out the cormorants and then breathed a sigh of relief as we left. Alice and Jack's idea of quietness is not that of serious bird watchers.

There's an event coming up there actually called Mud, Glorious Mud soon – it sounds right up my children's street!

Now that we have managed to clean ourselves up, we have added some new fabrics to Fabric and Ribbon, and two new cotton floor cushions to Azique. I hope you love these as much as we do.

A family day out in London last week-end - taking advantage of being close in and on the railway! We don't go often enough, so Alice and Jack get quite excited. Bags have to be packed, Nintendo's for the train journey (all of 25 minutes) have to be charged, money counted and wallets and purses found for the all important shopping experience. Finally snacks (sweets) for the day have to be stowed away in their bags – at least they're not marmalade sandwiches.

We arrive in London – destination the British Museum for the Book of the Dead exhibition via Covent Garden which slows us down a little, as Jack and Alice are distracted by the entertainers. A snack before we go in, so we don't get hungry in the exhibition. Our two children certainly march on their stomachs.

It's an excellent exhibition, if rather crowded at the beginning. Once past this it is easier to look at the actual objects. The ritual involved by the Egyptians in preparing and burying their dead is fascinating and the spells needed to navigate the Netherworld are beautifully illustrated in tiny and astonishing detail.

The children headed off on a slightly different tangent to the adults in the exhibition aided and abetted by their children's guide. At various points they put part of their guide into 'spell machines' which embossed various spells in hieroglyphics onto their sheets. Museums devise all kinds of interactive ideas now for children which makes it much more enjoyable and interesting for everybody.

Covent Garden

We go back by the same route and check out the entertainers again – there's a magic show this time and then afterwards it's back home on the train, tired but not very sleepy.

By the way, you can still get free postage if you order in January at Azique's website. And don't forget to pay a visit to Fabric and Ribbon - I went on a hunt the other day and found some great new fabrics – they'll be up soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

The Cat's Crackers

Now that Christmas and New Year are over, the wrapping paper recycled and presents put away, we're back to normal family life. This morning, this means baking cakes, which Jack treats as a science experiment. "Hmm; if I put this sweet or these sweets in this cake/muffin/pie what will happen?"

The ingredients

He comes into the kitchen. "Mum, I've got a good idea. If we put marshmallows, haribos and jelly babies in the middle of the cake and then cover it up we won't know what we're eating and then it'll be more fun!" Yes, well, it may be for a nine year old. I just hope I don't get the marshmallows.

Whilst Jack is concocting his experiments, I check on Alice, who is enthusiastically knitting away on the sofa.We have just started her latest project – a hippo which will eventually, if finished, measure 8 inches high. Ambitious stuff for a novice knitter. However, we proceed with great determination, my job being to finish the odd row and pick up some dropped stitches. We're still on the pattern though; the hippo is taking shape!

Now I've got the kids busy, I can pay some attention to Azique and Fabric & Ribbon – in the next few weeks you'll see some new presents and fabrics. Don't forget to take a look and see what we have been up to.

This doesn't happen and it hasn't happened yet. I keep telling the children not to expect it but "it's always a white Christmas in the stories" and who am I to argue. We'll have to watch the film White Christmas – we can really appreciate it this year.

Time to put Azique and Fabric and Ribbon to bed for Christmas and the New Year. They have both been through lots of changes in the last year and we and they deserve a rest. We have updated, changed, reformatted and revamped both of them for the New Year to make them more exciting and interesting for you.

Websites need a lot of attention – just like Sylvester, Molly and Tilly. At least a website doesn't need a Christmas pet stocking full of treats which they probably won't eator play with.Perhaps it will be different this year. In fact, Sylvester does like to chase a new toy, and he might well eat special Christmas cat food, but he draws the line at any cat clothing. And why do cats refuse to use the soft and comfy cat bed, specially picked out for them and settle on your favourite pullover on the sofa instead. After 16 years, we know what to expect.

Sylvester, play with your own toys!

The guinea pigs, however, have only been with us for two years and are still a bit of a mystery, as much as guinea pigs can be mysterious.

The advent calendar was a complete flop, much to my daughter's disgust. Yoghurt drops didn't cut the mustard. They didn't even eat day one, yet alone all the days up to day 24. All they really want for their treats are a willow basket and a bag of kale and then they are in guinea pig heaven. Maybe I can persuade the children to buy the kale and willow basket and gift wrap them with some dandelion leaves instead of a small pet stocking, but I don't think my powers of persuasion are that good.

Bye for now – we'll see you in the New Year. In 2011 Azique and Fabric and Ribbon will have lots of new ideas and fabric and cushions and bags for you throughout the year, which you can keep up to date with by following the blog or getting our e-newsletter.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Azique!

At Christmas, you have the chance to look back on the year and all the things you've done – apart from last year's resolutions you never seemed to get around to (never mind, you can always make them again). At Christmas you can reflect on the triumphs and not-quite-triumphs and not-really-triumphs-at-all, then have a really good break from all of it and recharge for the New Year.

This year of course, it is going to be a very different Christmas. Snow. And not just snow, but snow, SNOW and SNOW.

When I was little I never seemed to have a white Christmas. Growing up in Cambridge, there was only ever enough snow to cover the top of the grass. Enough snow in the garden,to make one normal snowman, once a year. Now, I can hardly believe my children's luck – they think snow every year is to be expected. Even the lions in Trafalgar Square have snow on them at the moment.

I remember snow in London in the early nineties. I had to walk home from the West End, through High Holborn where the snow was inches deep and London was as quiet as London can be. There was so little traffic and so many people walking. Snowball fights in Victoria Park. It was like a magical fairytale, and the snow this year has brought those young, free and single days in London right back.

When we knew the snow was coming the children got highly excited watching the weather forecasts. They sent Dad up into the loft – after a few bumps on the head, and muffled curses, the sledges came down, ready for action. Then all the children could do was hope there would be enough for sledging. There was!

This is the third winter where we have had inches of snow. The first time was in February and a complete surprise. School was closed, no trains ran, and the country had a holiday out of the blue, a gift from the heavens. Luckily, we can walk to a golf course with all the right sort of slopes and plenty of them. Last year, the surprise was how much fell in one go – I'd never seen such deep snow in my life (not counting holidays in snowy countries). This year the surprise was the snow itself – you couldn't make a snowman! No matter how many times you pushed a snowball around the new snow was so dry it just fell off! Snow balls were difficult to make, but when you succeeded they were perfect and burst in a shower of snow on impact without hurting at all, which was a great relief to me!

I hope I'm as patient as Gran and I know Alice has as much fun creating and making as I do.

My creative side finds its outlet at Azique and don't forget to also visit Fabric and Ribbon, where you can buy the same fabrics.

Now the children are back to school I'm finally catching up with writing my blogs.

I have spent some of the intervening time catching up on the garden and buying lots of bulbs for the months ahead with the unfortunate result that the only flowers that I seem to have in the garden at the moment are a few asters and chrythantemums. Something to be tackled in the coming days and weeks.

I have managed to catch up with Fabric and Ribbon. We are currently updating the style of the site to give you a more pleasant and attractive site to use and browse. Most days something has been altered, tweeked, added or deleted. Amybe I should start a competition and see if anyone can spot all the changes. However, having said all that we are still open for business and have added our Christmas Fabric ready for all those wonderful Christmas presents and gifts that you can make.

If you are too short of time or just want to find something different, take a look at Azique where you can find some beautiful and distinctive Christmas sacks which are personalised with the name of your child.

That's all for now, the rain has stopped and the sun is shining and I have some more bulbs to plant.
