Stimulus Funded Scheme to Give Drug Lords "Fast & Furious" Guns

RUSH: You know that Fast and Furious gunrunning thing? Justice.gov website located on page 96 a report on this program, 2009, February, the Recovery Act signed into law allocated $10 million to ATF for Project Gunrunner. Stimulus money paid for this, is what has been discovered. Stimulus money paid for Fast and Furious. Ten million was allocated in the stimulus bill to buy machine guns and revolvers and let Mexican drug lords take them across the border back to Mexico and use them. Stimulus money. That's shovel-ready job stuff. You remember that. Right here it is, 2009, February, Recovery Act signed into law, allocated $10 million to ATF for Project Gunrunner. In 2009, June, Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 allocated an additional $67 million to the ATF for Project Gunrunner, which means we can trace the money back to Obama, or if you want you could trace it back to Bite Me, who was put directly in charge.

But you can trace the money back to the Department of Justice. They administered the program. Stimulus money. This is important because now there is a way to follow the money. This is stunning. Fast and Furious funded by the Porkulus bill. In 2010, August, Emergency Border Security Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2010 allocated $37.5 million dollars to the ATF for Project Gunrunner. Just a little over a year ago, another $37.5 million. Just more money from Obama's stash. So let's add it up, ten million in February 2009, six million in June of 2009, so that's a total of $16 million in 2009, then in 2010, $37.5 million. So $53.5 million dollars spent to buy machine guns and revolvers, $53.5 million dollars, all taxpayer dollars. Isn't that fascinating?

Conservative writer Thomas Sowell asks if we’re on “a slippery slope to tyranny,” and begins by invoking Hitler.When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s, leading up to his taking power in the 1930s, he deliberately sought to activate people who did not normally pay much attention to politics.
Sowell mentions Hitler’s “useful idiots,” unthinking supporters that he believes are much like Obama’s base.In our times, American democracy is being dismantled, piece by piece, before our very eyes by the current administration in Washington, and few people seem to be concerned about it.
Sowell also has a problem with Obama “extracting large sums of money from a private enterprise to distribute as sees fit,” something that isn’t quite what is happening, and then signals his view that Obama doesn’t believe in constitutional government.With vastly expanded powers of government available at the discretion of politicians and bureaucrats, private individuals and organizations can be forced into accepting the imposition of powers that were never granted to the government by the Constitution.If you believe that the end justifies the means, then you don’t believe in constitutional government.

In his column, distinguished Professor at George Mason University, Dr. Walter E. Williams shared his view about immigration and liberty specifically Arizona’s enforcement of the immigration law.
In his column, he wrote: … “Probably, the overwhelming majority of Mexican illegal immigrants are hardworking, honest and otherwise law-abiding members of the communities in which they reside. It would surely be a heart-wrenching scenario for such a person to be stopped for a driving infraction, have his illegal immigrant status discovered and face deportation proceedings. Regardless of the hardship suffered, being in the U.S. without authorization is a crime.”
He also said that estimations of the illegal immigrant population in the U.S are between 10 and 20 million. He also emphasized that these illegal immigrants cannot be deported. “That argument differs little from one that says since we can’t catch every burglar, we should grant burglars amnesty. Catching and imprisoning some burglars sends a message to would-be burglars that there might be a price to pay. Similarly, imprisoning some illegal immigrants and then deporting them after their sentences were served would send a signal to others who are here illegally or who are contemplating illegal entry that there’s a price to pay.” He added.
Williams has his suggestions in a nutshell: Start strict enforcement of immigration law, as Arizona has begun. Strictly enforce border security. Most importantly, modernize and streamline our cumbersome immigration laws so that people can more easily migrate to our country.

A SPARKLINGLY in-form Olivia Newton-John sent her audience into raptures at the opening weekend of the 11th Adelaide Cabaret Festival. The event's headline performer made her long-awaited homecoming to Australia after an extended period overseas in a show of uplifting spirit, energy and generosity.

Looking trim and sprite in a sequined black outfit, she showed that she was thoroughly recharged and her voice is as fresh as ever. Her youthfully high range remains intact, her rhythmic timing is impeccable and she crosses styles from rock and pop to country with alacrity.
Early chart-toppers including Have You Ever Been Mellow, a swag of numbers from Grease, and a laid-back selection of country music songs made for a varied, well-rounded performance that was backed impressively by her own band and the Adelaide Art Orchestra.
But it was Newton-John's inclusion of newer songs on themes of personal survival that made the performance special. Grace and Gratitude from 2006 and the tender Help Me To Heal, from her Grace And Gratitude Renewed album, revealed a woman of great stamina, optimism and heart. The cancer survivor shared very movingly with her audience the enormously positive spirit that has seen her prevail over hardship.

Cabaret is not her natural bag, but she slipped into this with success too in a memorably languid, breathy version of Over the Rainbow accompanied just by piano. It was transfixing, and proved how our Olivia continues to shine as bright as ever as one of Australia's most indelible musical jewels.
This year's Adelaide Cabaret Festival, which is the third and final one for artistic director David Campbell, got off to a rather unconvincing start in a Variety Gala Performance that fell short of exhibiting the depth of talent he has assembled this time.
The featured artists gave patchy performances, and aside for some notable inclusions such as Glenn Shorrock singing Reminiscing to a glow-stick waving audience, and Newton-John popping in at the end to perform Xanadu with six dancers in drag, this showcase event felt thin.
The Magnets, an a cappella group from Britain who incorporate vocal effects that sound just like instruments, were entertaining. British singer Daniel Boys and Australian singer-songwriter Gillian Cosgriff acquitted themselves well, and Robyn Archer did a brave job of singing unaccompanied Stephen Foster's Hard Times Come Again No More.
Other than these brighter spots, however, host Simon Burke had to carry the show largely by himself as raconteur and singer

Mariah Carey Cleared By Child Protective Services

The L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services has determined Mariah Carey's twins are in a healthy and safe environment, TMZ.com reports.

The DCFS launched an investigation after receiving an anonymous tip that the singer drank a beer while breastfeeding in the hospital shortly after giving birth last month. Sources tell TMZ that the DCFS determined there is no merit to the investigation.

Carey told social workers that she did drink a Guiness-but only after a hospital staffer told her that drinking a dark beer would help her with lactating. She never hid the fact she consumed the beer and it was determined she did nothing wrong.

Carey's husband, Nick Cannon, talked about the whole ordeal to Piers Morgan on CNN last week. "Child Protective Services actually came to me," Cannon said, "And said that they were here to see me because there had been allegations that there was drug and alcohol use during the stay in the hospital."

"It all started when a nurse suggested to my wife that if you drink Guinness, the dark beer, the yeast improves breastfeeding," Cannon added. "I don't know if someone heard that [and] were saying my wife was drinking beer. People will do anything to try to conjure up a story."

Famous singer Mariah Carey gave birth to twins (a boy and a girl) yesterday, which is also the date of her and husband Nick Cannon’s fourth wedding anniversary.

According to reports, the baby girl came out first at 12:07 pm, weighing 5 pounds and 3 ounces, measuring 18 inches long; the baby boy came next, weighing 5 pounds 6 ounces, and was 19 inches.
It was said that it was Cannon who got so nervous that he even ended up going to a different hospital unit while the 42-year-old singer was calm for thinking that it would only be a false alarm.
“I am probably going to faint in the delivery room! I need to man up! Or maybe I should say WOMAN UP since they are the ones that have to be the strongest in the whole ordeal! I am in awe of my wife!”, Nick Cannon,” America’s Got Talent” host tweeted.
However, while Mariah was on the process of breathing in and out and pushing hard to deliver the twins, it was said that ”We Belong Together”, her #1 hit song in 2006 was playing on the background. In case you’re wondering, they still haven’t named the twins yet.
Congrats Nick and Mariah! though, it be great if Mariah was singing and belting her lungs out while giving birth. LOL.

Future debates to include the larger Republican candidate group will begin weeding out the pack.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - More than 24,000 pages of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's emails show her getting to grips with mundane state issues, feuding with the media and dealing with her sudden rise to national prominence, but do not appear to contain any damaging material.

Alaska released the correspondence on Friday more than two and a half years after news organizations requested it under state open-records laws.

The initial request to see Palin's correspondence with other state officials -- much of it on private Yahoo email accounts -- was made in 2008 shortly after Republican presidential nominee John McCain chose Palin as his running mate.

Palin was then the subject of a legislative probe into accusations that she had abused her power as governor to seek revenge against a state trooper who had been married to her sister.

The emails, some heavily redacted to remove private or privileged information, come from the first two years of Palin's governorship, from December 2006 to September 2008.

About 2,400 pages were withheld because state attorneys deemed them to contain privileged information. Requests to see emails up to Palin's resignation as governor in July 2009 are still pending.

The New York Times, The Washington Post and cable news channel MSNBC worked all day Friday and overnight to scan the emails and post them online, inviting public response.

Highlights of the emails so far include:

* Palin herself came close to quitting over media reports on her family: "Guys, I may be pretty wimpy about this family stuff but I feel like I'm at the breaking point with the hurtful gossip about my family," Palin wrote to aides. "I hate this part of the job and many days I feel like it's not worth it ..."

* Palin was shocked by the media attention -- including questions about dinosaurs -- after being named vice presidential candidate: "Arghhh! I am so sorry that the office is swamped like this! Dinosaurs even?! I, too, will continue to be dismayed at the media and am thankful you and Sharon are not part of the strange going's-on in the media world of today," she wrote to her communications chief, Bill McAllister, in September 2008.

* Palin's aide Ivy Frye sent a template e-mail to various supporters to send to the Anchorage Daily News protesting harsh coverage of Palin: "Hey, (redacted) Cut the body of this email and paste into a new email and send to content@adn.com.

* During the McCain campaign, she was sensitive to criticism from Alaskans that she was neglecting her state duties: "Pls make sure we're getting state business announcements out to the public under my name as often as possible," she wrote on a personal email account to her chief of staff Mike Nizich in September 2008.

The six cartons of documents include emails from Palin's official account as well as two private Yahoo accounts -- chiefly gov.sarah@yahoo.com -- which she used to conduct state business, a practice that critics said was an attempt to circumvent Alaska's open-records law.

The emails "show a very engaged Governor Sarah Palin being the CEO of her state," said Tim Crawford, treasurer at SarahPAC, Palin's political action committee. "The emails detail a governor hard at work. Everyone should read them."

Palin has not said whether she would run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012.

ACT Test: Are Prep Classes Worth Your Money?

Not to put pressure on high school students or anything, but the ACT and SAT are, perhaps, one of the most important tests you can take. If you want to go to college, that is.
Although, increasingly, many parents, including Babble’s own Meredith Carroll, say the tests are not an accurate measure of a student’s ability.
For most students, the first step to planning for college is by taking the ACT or SAT standardized test. Scores on this test determine the colleges to which students should apply. Lot of pressure, right? With the test playing that big a role in college admission many parents choose to shell out hundreds of dollars for ACT prep classes to help their children prepare.
But is it worth it?
As Madeleine Behr reports over on Centraltimes.org, while the prep classes can be boring and seem pointless, you can get a lot out of the class you can’t get from a test prep book and they are absolutely worth parents’ money – if students stay awake – which Behr admits half her class did not.

My teacher taught strategies and constantly drilled us with English grammar exercises and math from Algebra 1 and Geometry. Every week, we would get the same assignments, but with different words and numbers, so we really learned how to do the problems. After so much repetition, it’s easy to know what to do. And, more importantly, during the test, you can do those questions quickly instead of stressing out over those, when there are much harder questions on the way.

Did you know some colleges award money when students earn a specific score? I didn’t know this, but then, my ACT taking days are long over. Indiana Universityawards $4,000 per year to students who have an ACT score of a 27 to a 29. Hey! I would have fit into that bracket! They also award $9,000 per year to students who achieve a 30 or higher on the ACT. I would not have fit into that bracket.
Here’s the thing: I didn’t study for the ACT. I didn’t even really plan to take it. A friend – whose parents shelled out big money for her prep classes – made me sign up with her. I forgot about the test until the night before. She spent hours studying. I scored a 27. She got a 21. She took another prep class and brought her score up a little higher but didn’t come close to tying my score.
The experience made me think that kids are going to know what they’re going to know and while a prep class may help a little bit, if your kid isn’t interested in the class or the test, why pay? If the kid wants to take a prep class and you can afford it, by all means. But in my experience, the prep class didn’t account for much. Jonathan Leong, over at Centraltimes.org would agree. He says the ACT wasn’t meant to be studied for, it’s just a way for schools to measure how much a student knows. “The ACT examines practically all the English, math, reading, science and writing skills that a student may learn over their entire high school career. So with that said, it’s not realistic to try and study everything you’ve learned in that time period. ACT prep classes are a waste of time for students and a waste of money for parents.”
Leong advises parents to save their hard-earned cash for the expensive college tuition and books they will soon be purchasing. Still, Madeline Behr says the classes helped get her score where she wanted it to be. “Five hundred dollars seems like a lot now, but wait until those $9,000 per year scholarships start rolling in, that’s when you know that an ACT/SAT class was the right thing to do.

SCHOLARSHIP HELP

Do you need a 4.0?

I wanted to share with you a common misconception when it comes to whether or not you qualify for scholarships. A lot of people tell me that if they don't have a 4.0 or they are not incredibly close to that area, that they won't qualify for the scholarship or grant. To state it plainly, it is not true.

The vast majority of scholarships and grants usually have a range that you need to be with in. Like they will say something like you need to have a grade point average of a 3.2 or higher to qualify. But these requirements usually are only applicable to merit based scholarships and grants.

On the other hand there are financially based scholarships and grants, also known as "need based scholarships or grants". These types of scholarships are solely based off your financial situation and usually don't have any type of GPA requirement. So you have many possibilities out there that don't require you to have a stellar GPA to get some free cash for college.

Say you have a 2.5 GPA or something, and you are worried about that affecting your ability to get scholarships or grants. My advice is to focus on your strengths, something you are really good at or you have a lot of passion for. Try hard in your scholarship cover letter to relate your passion with receiving this certain scholarship. Believe it or not there is someone out there reading everyone of those scholarship applications hat come in and if you show them that you are dedicated and passionate about succeeding more times than not you will be successful in acquiring some scholarships if your words are truly genuine.

Please don't think that you have to have this amazing GPA or be the next Einstein. If you show them you are dedicated for a certain path through college and show them how passionate you are at being successful in a particular field, then you will be surprised at how much money can come your way. Like I said before, there are a bunch of people reading your application and if they feel you are truly going to succeed if you receive this money they will be happy to give it to you.

1. Start the Application Process Late

The most scholarship opportunities are available to students their senior year of high school. Many parents leave the responsibility to their children to find out what is available and they find out too late what was available to them. Often their kids have "senioritis" and do not think they need to worry about how they will pay for college, assuming their parents will take care of that problem for them or that a counselor or teacher will tell them what grants and scholarships they should apply for. Parents should start planning beginning the freshman year of high school. If this has already passed, don't get too discouraged. Begin by looking locally and be aggressive in your search.

2. Do Not Keep Records of Child's Accomplishments and Valuable Work From High School

From freshmen year on, it would be valuable to keep a folder dedicated to the works of your child. What should you include in the folder? Any essays that were written well and all of those that contain a personal nature. Any honors achievements, honor classes or awards of achievement. Final report cards and academic history. Community service records, any organizations/clubs/sports they belong to. Plus letters of recommendation will make your life a lot easier when you need to begin writing admission essays and filling out scholarship application forms.

3. Neglect to Ask for Help

A great place to look for assistance and to find out what is available to your child, is to start with their high school well before they are to graduate. If your school does not have a financial aid coordinator go to a guidance counselor. Many of the scholarship applications and information that are offered locally are sent directly to the school and give to guidance counselors. While they may not have the time to go through the information with you personally, they can offer a starting point. You can always go to your school board as well to see if they have any scholarship information or assist in pointing you in the right direction.

4. Discounting Local Organizations

Unfortunately, most of the information about local organization scholarships are not easy to track down in one central location. You may have to call around to each one individually to see if they have any scholarships they offer. Some great places to start with are the Lions Club, Elks Club, Rotary Club, Daughters of the American Republic, GFWC Women's Club, Exchange Club, or other civic clubs in your area. Churches and local businesses are also a great place to reference.

5. Think Your Child has to be a Quarterback or a Straight A Student to Qualify?

While there are many scholarships that are dedicated to sports and honors students, there are as many, if not more scholarships available to everyone else. Great grades and outstanding achievement won't hurt your chances, but almost every area of interest has their own scholarship opportunities. Use your child's strengths and interests as a place to search locally as well as statewide to see what's available. Having a passion will get them plenty of recognition and help you find the funding you need.

6. Owning a Home or Making Over $75,000 a Year Disqualifies You

The definition of need varies considerably depending on the cost of tuition of the school. Many families who consider themselves middle class will be able to qualify for needs based scholarships. Plus, there are many scholarships that are merit based where your financial situation is not a factor. Instead, they focus on the skills, achievements and talents of the student to determine the most eligible candidates.

Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer – Review

Trying to make lightning strike twice The key to successful children’s films in the modern era, at least those that aren’t animated, seems to be coming from the realm of book adaptations. Finding a successful series of books and coupling them with an unknown star, a modest budget and a high profile character actor or actress and you have the recipe for success. Diary of a Wimpy Kid followed this to massive amounts of success and now comes Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, hoping to replicate that formula.
Based off the “Judy Moody” novels by Megan McDonald, the film follows the titular character (Jordana Beatty) as she sets off to have the best summer of her life. With her wacky Aunt Opal (Heather Graham) around to spice things up, and her younger brother Stink (Parris Mosteller) to annoy her, Judy has to find a way to keep herself entertained as her friends seem to be having a much more exciting and interesting summer than she is.
John Schultz is no stranger to live action films aimed at children, with a fairly extensive history in the genre, and as such it’s not shocking that he’d be one to handle this, but he’s been handed a bad hand to play. This is a film that relies on a fairly inexperienced cast of child actors as well as a poor script that culminates in one of the worst things to happen to children in a movie theatre in a long time. Having inexperienced and marginally talented children is one thing but the film’s faults lie in a script that does no one favors.
From the dialogue to the meandering plot, this will be painful for parents not because it’s a children’s film but because it’s a bad one. This is a film desperately trying to be another Diary of a Wimpy Kid and failing miserably at it. That film was a well oiled machine that took a successful series of children’s novels and adapted them into strong characters with a strong story. In comparison Judy Moody is a rusted out machine with instructions written in purple crayon in a made up language that the author of which has forgotten.
It’s a shame because Schultz is really trying to craft a good story out of it. After starting out with the terrific cult film Bandwagon and breaking through to the mainstream with Drive Me Crazy featuring future Entourage star Adrian Grenier, Schultz has been mainly stuck with children’s live action films of poor quality. It’s not that he isn’t trying, similar to Aliens in the Attic or Like Mike, it’s just that there’s such trash for a script that this is the best film he could probably make out of it.
In an era where imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the producers behind Diary of a Wimpy Kid and its equally successful sequel ought to be flattered that someone tried to imitate their formula with another children’s novel to try and duplicate that success. It’s more difficult than it looks, though, If Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer is any indication.

Dramatic' solar flar could disrupt Earth Communication

An unusual solar flare observed by a NASA space observatory on Tuesday could cause some disruptions to satellite communications and power on Earth over the next day or so, officials said.

The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"This one was rather dramatic," said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the NWS's Space Weather Prediction Center, describing the M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare that peaked at 1:41 am Eastern time in the United States, or 0541 GMT.

"We saw the initial flare occurring and it wasn't that big but then the eruption associated with it -- we got energy particle radiation flowing in and we got a big coronal mass injection," he said.
"You can see all the materials blasting up from the Sun so it is quite fantastic to look at."
NASA's solar dynamics observatory, which launched last year and provided the high-definition pictures and video of the event, described it as "visually spectacular," but noted that since the eruption was not pointed directly at Earth, the effects were expected to remain "fairly small."
"The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface," said a NASA statement.
Murtagh said space weather analysts were watching closely to see whether the event would cause any collision of magnetic fields between the Sun and Earth, some 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) apart.
"Part of our job here is to monitor and determine whether it is Earth-directed because essentially that material that is blasting out is gas with magnetic field combined," he told AFP.
"In a day or so from now we are expecting some of that material to impact us here on Earth and create a geomagnetic storm," he said.
"We don't expect it to be any kind of a real severe one but it could be kind of a moderate level storm."
The Space Weather Prediction Center said the event is "expected to cause G1 (minor) to G2 (moderate) levels of geomagnetic storm activity tomorrow, June 8, beginning around 1800 GMT."
Any geomagnetic storm activity will likely be over within 12-24 hours.
"The Solar Radiation Storm includes a significant contribution of high energy protons, the first such occurrence of an event of that type since December 2006," the NWS said.
As many as 12 satellites and spacecraft are monitoring the heliosphere, and one instrument in particular on board NASA's lunar reconnaissance orbiter is measuring radiation and its effects.
"Certainly over the (two-year) lifetime of the mission this is the most significant event," said Harlan Spence, principal investigator for the cosmic ray telescope for the effects of radiation, or CRaTER.
"This is really exciting because ironically when we were developing the mission initially we thought we would be launching closer to a solar maximum when these big solar particle events typically occur," Spence told AFP.
"Instead we launched into a historic solar minimum that took a long, long time to wake up," he said.
"This is interesting and significant because it shows the Sun is returning to its more typical active state."
The resulting geomagnetic storm could cause some disruption in power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and other devices, and may lead to some rerouting of flights over the polar regions, Murtagh said.
"Generally it is not going to cause any big problems, it will just have to be managed," he said.
"If you fly from the United States to Asia, flying over the North Pole, there are well over a dozen flights every day," he added.
"During these big radiation storms some of these airlines will reroute the flights away from the polar regions for safety reasons to make sure they can maintain communications.
"People operating satellites would keep an eye on this, too, because geomagnetic storming can interfere with satellites in various ways whether it is the satellite itself or the signal coming down from the receiver."

The aurora borealis (Northern Lights) and aurora australis (Southern Lights) will also likely be visible in the late hours of June 8 or 9, NASA said.

5 American Soldiers Killed in Iraq Rocket Attack

BAGHDAD – BAGHDAD -- Five American soldiers died Monday when a barrage of rockets slammed into a base in a Shiite neighborhood of Baghdad -- the largest, single-day loss of life for U.S. forces in Iraq in two years.

The attack follows warnings from Shiite militants backed by Iran and anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr that they would violently resist any effort to keep American troops in Iraq past their year-end deadline to go home.

Although American casualties have dropped considerably in the two years since U.S. troops pulled back from Iraq cities, Shiite militias have begun hammering U.S. bases and vehicles with rockets, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs over the past three months.

The militants' goal appears twofold: to give the impression that they are driving the withdrawing U.S. forces out of Iraq, and to make the U.S. think long and hard before agreeing to any Iraqi request to keep a contingent of troops in this country beyond the end of the year.

"Iranian-backed militias are flexing their muscles and have steadily increased military pressure on U.S. forces since rumors first started in the early spring concerning an extension of the U.S. presence," said Michael Knights, an Iraq analyst at the Washington Institute.

Washington has been pressuring Baghdad to make a decision on whether it wants American forces to stay past Dec. 31 to help with such missions as protecting Iraq's airspace and training Iraqi forces.

Although few Iraqis will say this in public, many feel their own security forces are ill-equipped to keep a lid on violence and secure their borders without the assistance of the Americans.

Violence around Iraq has dropped dramatically since the insurgency's most deadly years in 2006 and 2007.

But eight years into a war often perceived as all but over, the deaths of the five U.S. soldiers and 11 Iraqis killed in other attacks around the country Monday underscore the persistent dangers here.

The violence also shows the threat Iranian-backed militias pose to U.S. forces if they stay longer and the potential backlash that Iraqi political leaders face if they support an extension.

The U.S. military said the five soldiers died Monday morning at a base in eastern Baghdad that was hit by indirect fire, the military's term for mortars or rockets.

Two Iraqi security officials later said three rockets slammed into a joint U.S.-Iraqi base in the Baladiyat neighborhood near the U.S. forces' living quarters. The American troops are partnering with Ministry of Interior forces. The Iraqi officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Baladiyat is a Shiite neighborhood that borders Sadr City, a slum in eastern Baghdad that is the stronghold of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. The Shiite cleric with ties to Iran has made opposition to the U.S. troops a core issue among his followers.

Thousands of his militia members, called the Mahdi Army, flooded the streets of Sadr City in a rally two weeks ago. They didn't carry weapons but the threat was clear.

Al-Sadr told the BBC he would unleash the Mahdi Army on American forces if they do not withdraw and that his supporters were already targeting U.S. bases and vehicles.

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan, the military's spokesman in Iraq, said attacks on U.S. forces in Baghdad and southern Iraq began to increase in March.

In January and February, the U.S. military recorded an average of about three attacks per day. By May, that number jumped to almost six per day. An attack could be anything from a single sniper shot at U.S. troops to a complex attack involving roadside bombs and gunfire.

"We're going to continue to defend ourselves and work with the Iraqi security forces," he said. "They're not going to deter us."

The five fatalities Monday were the most in a single day since May 11, 2009, when five troops died in a noncombat incident. On April 10, 2009, six U.S. troops died -- five in combat in the northern city of Mosul and one north of Baghdad in a noncombat related incident.

According to an Associated Press tally, 4,459 American service members have died in Iraq since the war began in 2003.

At the height of the surge of U.S. forces four years ago to combat sectarian violence that nearly tore Iraq apart, there were about 170,000 American troops in the country. The number then was gradually drawn down to below 50,000 when Washington announced it had ended its combat operations 10 months ago.

The roughly 46,000 U.S. troops still in the country focus on training and assisting Iraqi security personnel, but are to shun combat.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said he thinks the U.S. would agree to stay into next year if Iraq asks. Doing so, however, would break a campaign promise by President Barack Obama.

"The U.S. public just does not want to hear about Iraq right now. Iraq is totally off the radar screen right now in Washington," said Marina Ottoway, director of the Middle East Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Eleven people were killed in political violence across Iraq on Monday:

-- A bomb exploded at a checkpoint outside a government compound in Tikrit, the hometown of Saddam Hussein. It was the second attack in four days against the compound and the government employees who live and work there. Mohammed al-Asi, a media adviser to the provincial governor, said four people died.

-- Gunmen in speeding vehicles attacked two checkpoints in a Sunni neighborhood in northern Baghdad, police and medical officials said. Four people were killed.

-- Attackers bombed the house of a police colonel near Ramadi, the capital of the mostly Sunni Anbar province. The colonel survived the attack and was taken to the hospital. His wife, mother and son were all killed.

The officials all spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

First man ‘functionally cured’ of HIV

Since HIV was discovered 30 years ago this week, 30 million people have died from the disease, and it continues to spread at the rate of 7,000 people per day globally, the UN says.
There's not much good news when it comes to this devastating virus. But that is perhaps why the story of the man scientists call the "Berlin patient" is so remarkable and has generated so much excitement among the HIV advocacy community.
Timothy Ray Brown suffered from both leukemia and HIV when he received a bone marrow stem cell transplant in Berlin, Germany in 2007. The transplant came from a man who was immune to HIV, which scientists say about 1 percent of Caucasians are. (According to San Francisco's CBS affiliate, the trait may be passed down from ancestors who became immune to the plague centuries ago. This Wired story says it was more likely passed down from people who became immune to a smallpox-like disease.)

What happened next has stunned the dozens of scientists who are closely monitoring Brown: His HIV went away.
"He has no replicating virus and he isn't taking any medication. And he will now probably never have any problems with HIV," his doctor Gero Huetter told Reuters. Brown now lives in the Bay Area, and suffers from some mild neurological difficulties after the operation. "It makes me very happy," he says of the incredible cure.
The development of anti-retroviral drugs in the 1990s was the first sign of hope in the epidemic, transforming the disease from a sudden killer to a more manageable illness that could be lived with for decades. But still, the miraculous cocktail of drugs is expensive, costing $13 billion a year in developing countries alone, according to Reuters. That figure is expected to triple in 20 years--raising the worry that more sick people will not be able to afford treatment.
Although Brown's story is remarkable, scientists were quick to point out that bone marrow transplants can be fatal, and there's no way Brown's treatment could be applied to the 33.3 million people around the world living with HIV. The discovery does encourage "cure research," according to Dr. Jay Levy, who co-discovered HIV thirty years ago, something that many people did not even think was possible years ago.

The third “summer of recovery” is here and the title is less than accurate in describing the US economy. Unemployment is now at 9.1% which does not include hundred's of thousands of individuals who have given up looking. Housing prices are at a 2002 level, wiping out a decade of housing appreciation. The home is the primary investment for most families. Gas prices are unusually high and there are heavy restrictions on drilling for oil for US companies but there is a green light on drilling for foreign nations.

Many economists believe that the White House and Senate are not behaving in a way that will lead the country to prosperity. Incentives have “not” been put in place and the White House and Senate lead the country in a philosophy directing in the opposite direction. Incentives would include removing many non critical restrictions on businesses, reduce taxation, stabilizing and increasing the value of the dollar, cutting outrageous spending, taking back funds not spent in the stimulus package now used to boost the union pension plans, reducing the size of government by one third, eliminating Obama Care which will lower expenses for companies who were not able to get waivers from the White House.

A suggested solution includes letting the private sector business community know that for certain that for the next ten years the government will now lower taxes, reduce ¾ of restrictions, and reducing government spending 20%. This is said to be enough to set off a flurry of prosperity.

European socialism has led to economic crisis in Europe. This philosophy has been imported to the United States, the US who for many years was the leading economy. This was due to a lack of restrictions, rewarding success with low taxes, and encouraging free enterprise. The US is now moving away from that position and philosophy.

Weeks after launching his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has raised eyebrows among supporters and political observers by taking a vacation with his wife -- during the same week prominent religious conservatives are gathering in Washington.

Gingrich, who has been married three times, has been aggressively courting the religious conservatives, including many of the "pro-marriage" activists gathering in Washington.

His spokesman, Rick Tyler, said Gingrich had told Ralph Reed and other organizers of the Faith and Freedom Coalition Conference long ago that he would not be able to attend because of the family commitment.

Tyler said Gingrich was sending a video statement to the gathering and was remaining active, issuing public comments on Friday's dismal economic reports.

The Gingriches, Tyler said, are simply taking a long-planned leave from the pressures of the campaign.

"This was the one opportunity early in the campaign to do it," he said. "His absence shouldn't in any way be taken as a sign that the conference is not important. It is," Tyler said, adding: "Everyone needs a break."

The vacation follows a series of problems for Gingrich's nascent campaign. Gingrich told Sunday talk show interviewers last month that a Republican Medicare proposal was "right-wing social engineering."

The former speaker took his words back a few days later under heavy criticism from Republicans. He also called the author of the proposal, Rep. Paul Ryan, to apologize.

As the vacation began, one of Gingrich's high-profile organizers in Iowa, Will Rogers, decided to step down from his paid position with the Gingrich campaign, where he had served, in his words, as "a kind of political director," organizing grass-roots activities and reaching out to Republicans, whom he knows from his past role as Polk County Republican co-chair.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Rogers said his decision to return to private employment was "entirely a personal decision" and that he will still work for Gingrich as a volunteer.

However, he also issued a caution to Gingrich saying "if he's serious he will have to come back to Iowa" and spend a considerable amount of time further developing his grassroots network in the state. Asked whether he thought Gingrich was serious, Rogers said, "That's an open question right now."

Rogers noted that Gingrich drew enthusiastic crowds in Iowa, even after his talk-show gaffe. Rogers expressed concern, however, about the timing of the vacation. "I don't begrudge him and his wife having time together," Rogers said. "I do know it was not the most opportune time to go."

Rogers downplayed the impact of his own departure, saying the Gingrich Iowa team remains intact. He said many of his duties will be taken over by Katie Koberg, a tax activist and experienced organizer.
UPDATED: Gingrich's spokesman Rick Tyler says the speaker will return to New Hampshire on June 8 for, among other things, the screening of his new film about Pope John Paul II. After reading Rogers' comments, Tyler added that he offered "good advice. We'll take it."

Sheen, whose family court date last Tuesday made him an hour late to his show in Washington, D.C., will send his lawyers into action again this Tuesday to pick up where they left off on that other little matter: his $100-million lawsuit against his former "Two and a Half Men" employers, and whether that will be settled in arbitration or in the court system.
By the way, the police escort that allowed Sheen's ride to barrel along at 80 mph from the airport to the show in D.C. last week? It's being investigated. A police commander didn't know officers had escorted Sheen, according to a D.C. police email obtained Monday by the Associated Press. Several policies appear to have been broken, Police Chief Cathy Lanier told the AP.

Sheen also revealed he was dumped by his porn star girl friend, Rachel Oberlin via text message.

Republicans are quickly learning that not every one of their members is Paul Ryan. And that's becoming a problem as the party's rank-and-file tries to defend his far-reaching entitlement reform package to constituents back home.
And as many effective television appearances, PowerPoint presentations or online infomercials Ryan can offer to articulate his plan, the vast majority of voters simply aren't paying attention.
That's what happened to Republican Jane Corwin on Tuesday in New York's 26th District special election: she was ill-equipped to defend the controversial proposal.
"I probably would have addressed the Medicare message -- coming out at my opponents -- quicker," Corwin said on Monday, in a stroke of self-reproach.
But it wasn't just the timing of Corwin's response. It was the fact that she came out early on in support of Ryan's plan, but didn't even attempt to sell the voters on the details of the proposal. She later backed away from some of the specifics, and tried to turn the table on Democrat Kathy Hochul, accusing her of being the one trying to cut Medicare. That's not a way of inspiring confidence or winning support.
Contrary to some accounts of his town hall meetings, Ryan actually received a predominantly positive reception at his town halls back home -- in a district that's less Republican than the one Democrats picked up in New York. But while Ryan's natural policy chops allow him to be an effective messenger, a nuanced and convincing message may not come as easily for other Republicans.
Privately, Republican officials fretted that some members - not well-versed in fiscal policy - returned home to their town halls without a persuasive case for altering an entitlement that seniors have come to depend on.

"The only way you win this, is you've got to go back and explain it, and it's not a bumper sticker explanation," said former Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., at a roundtable discussion with reporters last week.
"One Member -- who will remain unknown -- in the conference, says, well Paul, I agree with this; can I take you with me to my district to explain it? Because you understand it and can explain it, but this is not easy stuff," Davis added, about the Ryan budget.
If other vulnerable Republicans don't study up, they could suffer the same fate as Corwin. Indeed, they're quickly learning that the messaging is as important as the message.

EDWARDS FACES CHARGES

A federal grand jury has indicted John Edwards on charges he illegally used political donations to cover up an affair with a former aide to his 2008 presidential campaign. According to the Associated Press's Mike Baker and Nedra Pickler, Edwards was indicted on six criminal charges, including conspiracy, and four counts of illegal campaign contributions.
