St Joseph Engineering College, Department of Business Administration takes great pleasure inviting you to participate in our forthcoming National Conference – 2012. The St Joseph Engineering College is celebrating its decennial year and the college has the prime motto, Service and Excellence. In this context the present conference-2012 will provide a forum that stimulates a discussion on the above said theme by providing great opportunity for policy makers, researchers, practicing managers, academicians to think firmly and present their models and views over contemporary issues prevailing in the world of competitiveness. The conference will foster the much awaited issues which do need the attention from every walk of corporate and academic life. The Inaugural of First year MBA classes

The Inaugural of First year MBA classes for the academic year 2011-12 was on 3rd October, 2011 at 10am at the Mechanical Conference Hall. The chief guest was Mr. Joseph Stephen Pinto, Senior Manager, Head of Anti money Laundering Compliance, HSBC, Middle East. He mentioned in his speech that the students must grab all the opportunities and work on building a good reputation for themselves. Guests of Honour Rev. Fr.Henry Mascarenhas & Rev Fr Valerain D’Souza wished the students all the best. President of the function Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal motivated the young students to put in their best from the day one.

Dr. Rio D’Souza, Dean Academics & MCA welcomed the gathering. Prof. Eric Patrao, Dean Planning & development, Dr. Prakash Pinto Dean MBA, Dr. Pinto Pius HOD-E & E, Dr. Thirumaleshwar Bhat, HOD- ME were present on the dias. Colloquy-11, A symposium on Wealth Management was organised by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College on 30th September,2011 at the Conference Hall.

The chief guest was the Inaugural function was Dr T. Mallikarjunappa, Professor, Department of Business Administration, Mangalore University. As a key note speaker, he addressed that India has huge pool of human resources who are technically qualified and is a centre of attraction. He referred population as wealth. and insisted on producing goods which are countable to increase the GDP of nation, this will help in growth of the nation. He made a distinction between wealth and profit maximisation and added on saying creation of wealth is superior to profit. Wealth management cannot be looked in a narrow sense and if you earned enough wealth after cutting on breakfast, lunch and dinner, you have not created wealth but destroyed your health. So, we should look at wealth in a broader sense.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC was the Guest of Honour for the inaugural delivered his address by saying that wealth management is not easy and understanding this requires supreme knowledge and it was a priviledge to have Dr T. Mallikarjunappa to give us the inputs.

As a token of respect and gratitude, the Director of SJEC handed over the memento to our Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Valerian D’souza, the Director of SJEC was present for the inaugural. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean of Business Administration welcomed the gathering and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organising Secretary, Colloquy-11.

The first session on the topic “Stock Market Investments and Wealth Management” was conducted by Mr. Norbert Shenoy, MD of Arunaanjali Securities, Mangalore. He made a mention that “Market respects no reputation, no academics, but respects one and only thing, that is DISCIPLINE.”

The second session on the topic “Financial Education and Wealth Creation” was conducted by Professor Radhakrishna Sharma, Associate Professor, Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte.

The symposium was attended by the 200 students of both MBA and M.Com programmes of various colleges in Karnataka State.

The valedictory function was graced by Mr. Michael Lobo, Cluster Head, South Canara and North Karnataka, HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd who addressed the issue of Mutual Funds and its affect on the Indian economy. He stated the role of mutual funds in risk reduction, benefits reaped by the investors from the professional management skills of the fund managers.

Rendition 11, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 29 September, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC. The dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad as the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC as the Guests of Honour, Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza as the President, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, Ms Smita Jesudasan, Rendition Organizing Secretary, Mr Rayan D’Souza, Mr Lanston Pinto and Ms Divya Fernandes, the Student coordinators.

Dr Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad in his Inaugural Address remarked that the foresight of the college in organizing the paper presentation contest for the MBA and M.Com students was commendable. He added that the post graduate students should focus and imbibe soft skills apart from the technical skills to succeed in the corporate world.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the paper presenters a success and hoped that they would enrich knowledge and be open to learning.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director, SJEC in his Guest of Honour address commented that the paper presentation would be a success when God showers his blessings and graces.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC in his Presidential Remarks stressed that the paper presentation contest would provide fodder for the thought provoking process of knowledge and learning. He encouraged the students to read and improvise on their factual and empirical acumen.

Rev Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC conferred the Alumni Excellence Awards to Mr Riyaz, President, Talent Research Foundation of the Batch 2007 – 09, Mr Nelson Castelino, Proprietor, Nithyadar Battery Works of the Batch 2008 – 10 and Ms Priya Sequeira, Entrepreneur of the Batch 2008 – 10.

“Together everyone achieves more”

The placement cell under the guidance of Mr Peter Brian Benjamin,Assistant Professor organized a one day placement workshop on the following topics: Connectivity & Inter-connectivity, Organizational culture, Conflict & Stress Management and Being selective for success.

Mr. Arun John Mathais, an energetic personality was the spokesperson for the day. He had the charm in him to capture the audience and have an everlasting impact on our lives.

In the morning session Mr. Arun spoke on Connectivity & Inter-connectivity. It means “if you want something you never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done before.” And hence “all you do is all you have done, is all you get what you have got.” The next session was on Organizational culture which is referred to as the DNA of an organization. The individual’s DNA should gel with the organizational DNA and only then the talent can be acquired and retained.

In the post lunch session on Conflict & Stress Management, he elaborated on the causes of conflicts, the ways to resolve them and the means through which we can manage stress. The last session was on being selective for success in which he spoke about time management and its importance in our work environment.

All good things do come to an end but the goodness of good things lasts a lifetime. It is good to build rather than learn and relearn.

Ms. Lin Pinto, 3rd Sem-MBA welcomed the gathering. We invoked god’s blessings through a prayer song led by Mr. Lanston Pinto and the choir members. The sessions were very educative as the spokesperson used his personal experiences as examples for various situations and interacted with the audience by answering all the quality queries. The session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Martin D’souza, 3rd Sem-MBA.

The session helped us to explore alternate methods and ways to deal more effectively with the problems that would be coming our way in the corporate world.

Second semester 91.37% results

The second semester students of MBA have scored excellent result with a pass percentage of 91.37%. Out of 58 students who appeared for the May/June 2011, (Visvesvaraya Technological University), 10 students have secured First class with a distinction. 40 students have passed in First class and 3 have passed in second class.

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore organized a guest lecture on “Optimum Performance” as a part of SJEC – MBA Special Lecture Series on 09th May, 2011 at 9.00 am in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC. Mr. Albert D’Souza, Managing Director, Printania Offsets Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai and member of the Governing Board, St Joseph Engineering College delivered a lecture on “Optimum Performance”. He motivated the students to come out of their casual approach and give their best performance in anything they do. He cited the living examples of Boman Irani, Amitabh Bachan, Sachin Tendulkar and David Hussey who made it to the winning streak despite their humble beginnings and weaknesses. These personalities have performed at their optimum level because they have got into the depth of their subject.

He encouraged the MBA students to be more responsible, progressive and to come out of their comfort zones since they will be the future decision makers, policy makers and go – getters in the society. He asked the students to reflect on this quote,”Doing nothing is better than being busy doing nothing”. He explained the quote by stating that withdrawal from daily routine is better than the pretense of being busy doing nothing. His concluding remarks were “When everyone was crawling, I started walking, I became a successful person. When everyone was walking, I started running, I became a winner. When everyone was running I started flying, I became a winner”.

Zephyr – 11. A National P.G. Management Fest organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 31 March, 2011 at 9.30 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.

The function was inaugurated by the Chief Guest – Mr Allen Pereira, Former CMD, Bank of Maharashtra; Guests of Honour – Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC, Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Asst Director – SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, President – Rev. Fr Valerian D'Souza, Director – SJEC, Dr. Prakash Pinto – Dean - MBA, Ms Smita Jesudasan , Faculty Coordinator and Kailas Bhat, Student Co-ordinator.

Mr Allen Pereira, Former Chairman and Managing Director, Bank of Maharashtra in his Inaugural Address remarked on the significance of Philanthropy in the world of scams and economic slowdown. He stated that the students should have the intent to give rather than receive and they should lay down their footprints for their peers to follow. He stated the proverb, 'Do unto others what you expect from them'. He cited the example of Chen Shu-Chu, a 59-year old selling vegetables in Taiwan's Taitung market since 1963 who was recognized for her philanthropy. Her donations include US$32,000 for a children's fund and US$144,000 to help build a library at the school.

Rev Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address affirmed that the MBA and MCOM students should give time, talents and treasure philanthropically to the society and emerge as transformers to make the world a quality dwelling place.

Dr Joeph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address greeted the participants and expressed that the students should learn to give wholeheartedly with whatever minimal they possess and receive.

Rev. Fr Valerian D'Souza, Director – SJEC in his Presidential Remarks commented that the theme of Zephyr 11 – 'Philanthropism' was befitting the current scenario. He also added that philanthropy should not be sermonized but practiced by the students as a way of life.

Innovate to Create and Sustain Customer and Owner Value says Fr Ozzie at the Valedictory Session of the National Conference

The National Conference on ‘Strategising Innovative Business Models’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was successfully completed with the Valedictory Session on 25th March, 2011 at 2.00 p.m in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC.

Rev. Dr Oswald Mascarenhas, S.J, St Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology in his Valedictory Address stated that the innovative business model should constitute creation and sustainability of customer and owner value with the aid of key resources and key processes to be on the competitive map. He added that innovation is not free from risk. He stressed that an innovative business model can reshape an industry or redistribute billion of rupees of value.

Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour Address narrated a story of a teacher who encouraged her students to ride a bicycle by adding additional side wheels to remove from their minds the fear of falling. He remarked that new ideas should be sought and implemented and the time tested and traditional models of success should be restricted if an organization has to innovate and survive in the market place.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour Address pronounced that the conference was persuasive towards the focal need of an organization to innovate in the times of economic slowdown, global turbulence and natural disasters.

The delegates furnished the feedback of the conference and appreciated the noteworthy action of the Department of Business Administration in organizing the National Conference on the apt theme at the right time. Ms Aruna Menezes, Assistant Professor, Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology expressed that the content of the conference would lead to deeper explorations and could be an area of research for both academicians and practitioners. Ms Reema Frank, Assistant Professor, P.A. College of Engineering hoped that the conference would be organsied in the years to come and contribute to academic growth and excellence. Ms Rita Battacharjee, Students Counsellor, K R S College, Tiruchengode was impressed with the hospitality of the staff and students of the Department of Business Administration.

Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, Proprietor and Director, Achal Industries, in his Presidential Address cited the success initiatives of Achal, Hindustan Univlever Ltd. – Mangalore Branch, MCF with respect to innovation in its various operations. He articulated that innovation is a way of life in the day to day activities of the line and staff. He affirmed that if the business models in the book titled ‘Business Transformation Strategies’ authored by Rev Dr Oswald Mascarenhas adapted to the Indian context could generate value worth rupees twenty crores.

The National Conference on ‘Strategising Innovative Business Models’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 24 March, 2011 at 10.00 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.

Mr Jayanth Nadiger, Trade Commissioner of Belgium for South India and Aryabhata Award Winner, 2009 in his key note address remarked that the foresight of the college in organizing the national conference on the apt theme ‘Strategising Innovative Business Models’ in the era of globalization and economic slowdown was commendable. He added that the companies should build on focus and differentiation to implement the strategies and also that the essence of the strategy should be what not to do. He cited the case study of ING Direct, US who have had a fabulous growth in a short span of their existence. He implied that the companies should make resource demands and their capabilities should be synergized to be innovative at the non-insular market place.

Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate in his Guest of Honour Address commented that the strategy should be a clear vision of the road ahead as to where to go and where not to. He quoted the story of Alice in Wonderland when Alice enquired from the Cheshire cat the direction to proceed and the cat replied that if she does not know where she wanted to go, it would not matter which turn she would take. He gave the acronym of 3G – ‘Google’ where there should be a search of new ideas, ‘Global Positioning System’ where the company should make its presence known on the global map and ‘God’ who will help those who help themselves.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the conference a success and hoped that the delegates would have a fruitful deliberation at the two day conference.

Most Rev. Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese and President of SJEC, in his Presidential Remarks stated the role of innovation in the tough economic times. He stressed on changes in the organizations methods with the right value systems also that the innovative processes should not restrict the poor within its boundaries in India.

Mr Jayant Nadiger is the Trade Commissioner of Belgium for South India and has been awarded Aryabhatta Award for Exemplary Achievements in International Relations in the year 2009. He has 21 Years of Professional experience with a mix of Private and Diplomatic Trade, Economic & commercial field and over 16 years of experience in Trade and Investment into India in particular South India from UK and Belgium. He is also involved in facilitating the Royal/Prime Ministerial & Ministerial delegations to South India. He has been instrumental in effecting meaningful Joint Venture’s, subsidiaries and other sort of business establishments from UK and Belgium in the last 16 years. Instrumental in setting up of over 18 Belgian SME Companies in South India and 9 Indian companies in Belgium. He is instrumental in putting Karnataka on the World Creativity and Innovation map under World Creativity Forum spearheaded by the Flanders Belgium Govt and on the Initiator Think Tank committee of the World Creativity Forum. Initiator team member of Creativity & Innovation Platform of Karnataka (CIPK). Dr Francis Cherunilam

Dr Francis Cherunilam, a post-graduate in Economics and Business Administration and a doctorate in the area of International `Business, is a prolific writer and has to his credit about 20 books and over a hundred research papers and articles. Some of his books and papers have been translated into Indian and foreign languages.

He is at present a professor at the School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology. Earlier, he was on the faculties of the Department of Postgraduate Studies and Research in Economics and the Department of Management Science, University of Mysore. He also had a short stint at the the Indian Institute of Management, Calicut, as Professor and Chairman, Marketing Area.

Prof. B. V. Raghunandan

Prof. B. V. Raghunandan, Professor at S. V. S. College, Bantwal and visiting professor of the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College is a exemplary speaker and a prolific writer in the areas of Accounting, Finance, Environment and Energy. He has authored several books widely referred by the students and the faculty at the graduate and post graduate level. Dr T. G. Vijaya is a Masters in Organizational Behaviour and a Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Madras University. She has over 15 years of experience as a teacher, trainer and consultant. She currently works as a Professor at PSG College of Technology. Apart from being associated with large business houses in the area of Human Resource Consulting she is also actively associated with schools as a career consultant. Her expertise lies in assessment of candidates for the purpose of selection and development and implementation of performance appraisal systems for organizations.She has coordinated and served as a facilitator for various management development programmes across functions and levels and currently heads the Centre for Training and Development at PSG IM. A recipient of the young teacher career award for the year 2004 .Dr T. G. Dr Yashavantha Dongre is the Registrar of Vijayanagara Krishnadevaraya University, Bellary. He has to his credit 2 Books, 20 Articles in International and National Journals, More than 30 articles is Kannada Journals, Magazines and News Papers. He has completed Research Projects on Non- Profit sector funded by Ford Foundation, Youth Integration in Cooperatives funded by the International Cooperative Alliance, Financing of Rural Artisans funded by Syndicate Bank Chair on Rural Banking, Financing of Agriculture by Commercial Banks funded by UGC, Viability and Growth Potential of Student Cooperatives funded by UGC, etc... Mr Sudhir P Ghate

Mr Sudhir P Ghate is the Chairman of Magnum Intergrafiks Private Limited, a small town advertising agency which rides the wave of success to emerge as one among the top 30 advertising agencies of the country in a short span of 15 years. Think big and act big seems to be the mantra that guides Ghate. He is an entrepreneur and organizer par excellence, who believes in leading from the centre rather than from the front. One can but admire his fortitude in establishing his advertising business with Mangalore as the head office only to spread its tentacles in different parts of the country by setting up 14 branches. Ghate was dismissed from college for his proactive role in opposing emergency. He was 1st degree student in Canara College, where his mother Sharada Ghate was the faculty member. Sudhir was the student leader in charge of young Satyagrahis who was entrusted with the mission of motivating the student community. After completing graduation, Sudhir joined Chartered Accountant Ganesh Shenoy in Mangalore. When Ganesh left for Dubai in 1989, Ghate followed him only to return as he could not live in a place with restricted freedom. 1989 also proved to be a turning point of his career as he went to America and identified four areas with potential for business in the service sector namely credit card services, general insurance, T V Channels and Advertising. He chose advertising for its low investment and hit the bull’s eye.

Fr Oswald A. J. Mascarenhas SJ

Fr Oswald A. J. Mascarenhas SJ, was born in Mumbai, India, and studied at St Aloysius College Middle School, High School and College for twelve years before he joined the Karnataka Jesuit Province in 1955. During his priestly formation, he obtained Licentiate in Philosophy (LPh) from Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur, Tamilnadu, Licentiate in Sacred Theology (LST) from De Nobili College, Poona, and Masters in Philosophy from Dharwar University, South India. Ordained in 1966, he taught philosophy and sacred theology at the St. Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary in Mangalore during 1967-1970, after which he was sent to the United States to pursue studies in Business Economics.

Mr Kumble Narasimha Prabhu

Giridhar Prabhu is 44 year old businessman from Mangalore. He is the Owner of Achal Industries and also Director of Achal Cashews Private Limited. Achal Industries is a Family business since 1977 and is considered a Small Scale Industry (SSI) since 1981. Achal Industries has one of the most modern manufacturing cashew facilities in the country and has qualified for being one of the first units recognized for In-process Quality Control by the Export Inspection Agency of India. It is also manufacturing Cashew nut Shell Liquid. G. GIRIDHAR PRABHU is now the Member of the Steering Committee on Cashew under the Chairmanship of Secretary ( Agriculture & Co-operation) , Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, New Delhi and President , Indian Liberal Group, Karnataka . He was the Vice Chairman of Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) & Committee of Administration of the CEPC of India since 1987 and has participated in Trade delegations. He was a member of the Indian Cashewnut Development Council representing the industry and has taken keen interest in the Cashewnut Development program of the country. He is also deeply interested in technical matters related to packaging, control of pesticides as well as promotion. An active member in various Trade Bodies, he is past President of the Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers’ Association, Mangalore. He was the Hon. Secretary of the Canara Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mangalore for 4 years and Treasurer for 2 years and editor of the Journal for a number of years. He is also a Visiting Faculty at T.A. It was with a great sense of loss when we heard of Msgr. Fredrick V. Pereira’s death. Msgr. Pereira was the former Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore went to the heavenly abode at 11.30 am Sunday 27th of Feb. 2011. He has also served as the campus minister in St Joseph Engineering College.

Msgr Periera was rushed to Fr Mullers hospital at 11.15 am on 27th February, 2011 because of a sudden heart failure. Msgr Periera breathed his last at 11.30 am at Fr Mullers hospital.

Christmas Celebration by First Year MBA students

The First year MBA students of the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, conducted a Christmas celebration on 23rd December, 2010 from 3:00 to 5:00pm. Christmas carols were sung by the melodious choir of the first year MBA students. There was skit presented explaining the message of Christmas.

Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean MBA spoke during the program about the significance of Christmas. Santa Clause distributed the gifts bought by the Christmas friend to all the students. The celebrations time included dance by the students and singing the Christmas carols. Refreshments were served at the end of the program.

All the faculty of the Department of Business Administration, the housekeeping staff and the students of first and second year MBA, SJEC were present for the celebration.

The Graduation Day of the 2nd batch of MBA students of SJEC was held on October 30, 2010 at 10.30am in the Seminar Hall of the Mechanical Block. Dr Martin Jebraj, Principal, Ambedkar Institute of Technology, Bangalore and Dean of Student Affairs, VTU, was the Chief Guest of the function.He called upon the graduates to come out of their individual thinking and develop the team spirit because the present day requires them to excel as a team. He made an ardent appeal to the brilliant among them to come to the teaching profession.

Guest of Honour Dr Solomon Ravikumar asked the students to make the right choice by listening to their inner voice. Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Presided over the function and called upon the students to practice the ideals learnt in SJEC, be accountable to their inner voice and to society.

Director Fr Valerian D’Souza brought out a volley of memories and extended his good wishes to the graduating students. Principal Dr Joseph Gonsalvis welcomed the gathering and Ms Shakila B proposed the vote of thanks.

Industrial Visit to Coimbatore

The Department of Business Administration of St Joseph Engineering College organised an Industrial Visit to Coimbatore for the Second year MBA students from 28th to 30th October, 2010. The Brief Report of the Visit and the photographs are given below:

Today everyone is aiming at bridging the gap in thought process and out beat the theoretical knowledge through the essence of practicality. Keeping the concept of corporate exposure in mind, the students of IInd year MBA students approached the Department of Business Administration, with the suggestion of an Industrial Visit to Coimbatore. This request was accepted by the Dean as well as the Management and the students were asked to go ahead with our planning.

A committee was formed to co-ordinate the activities of the industrial visit with Mr. Peter Brian Benjamin and Mr. Chaco P.J as staff coordinators and the student co-ordinators were Kailas S Bhat, Karthik Bhandary, Melvin Paul D’Souza, Nithin Raj, Shivaraj Shetty, Lekha Saraswathi and Sharlet D’Mello. While the staff co-ordinators took charge of arranging for the various companies that can be visited in Coimbatore and the other facilities (boarding and lodging and the travelling), the students committee arranged for train tickets at a concession.

On the second day, 29 October, 2010 by 8.00 am all of the students were ready, fresh and tidy to visit the other two companies. But the visit couldn’t take place in the morning because of the appointment that was rescheduled for the afternoon and hence making the best use of the limited time available at hand, it was decided to tour the neighboring areas of the place where the studens were residing and after lunch they all set towards the software company that was scheduled.

As part of the SJEC MBA Special Lecture Series, Prof. B. V. Raghunandan, from S. V. S. College, Bantwal and visiting professor of the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College delivered a lecture on 'Bottom of the pyramid as Marketing Strategy' on Friday, 8th October, 2010 at 3.15pm for the MBA students at the SJEC Bethania Hall.

Prof. Raghunandan cited examples of the marketing strategy of Shri Mahila Griha Udyog, the makers of the famous Lijjat Papad and ITC’s e-Choupal, which is transforming the way farmers do business, and the way rural markets work. A special mention was made of Free eye camp by Dr Modi and how it was used as a marketing strategy.

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore organized ‘Colloquy – 10’, a one day Symposium on Entrepreneurship on 6th October, 2010. Students from MBA and M.Com programmes from various colleges attended the symposium.

The Chief Guest of the Inauguration function was Mr Jacob Crasta, CEO, CM Envirosystems Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru. In his inaugural speech he motivated students to be enterprising and be passionate about their area of interest. He stated that liberalizing the Indian economy has opened various avenues for entrepreneurship. Prof Eric Patrao, Principal In Charge and Dean (Planning & Development) and Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, SJEC were the Guests of Honour. Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC presided over the function. Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean, MBA welcomed the gathering. Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organising Secretary, Colloquy -10 proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Senior Lecturer compeered the function.

The resource person for the first session was Prof Edmund Frank, Dean, PG Studies in Business Management, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore. He related his experiences as an entrepreneur and cited several instances for being innovative and enterprising. The second session for the day was taken up by Mr. Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, CEO and Managing Director, Manipal – Ace Event Management Co.(P) Ltd., Mangalore. He enlightened on the opportunities available and the challenges faced by an entrepreneur. He said identifying what one is good at is important to become an entrepreneur. Mr. Ronald D’Souza of Aquatic Biosystems, Mangalore, presented a talk on the scope available in Ornamental Fish farming in Mangalore.

The Symposium concluded with the Valedictory function in the evening. The Chief Guest for this valedictory function was Mr. K. Jairaj Pai, President, Kanara Small Scale Industries Association, Mangalore. In his address to the students he highlighted upon the various schemes of the Government to encourage entrepreneurship. Prof Eric Patrao Principal In Charge and Dean (Planning & Development) presided over the function. Mr. Kailas Bhat, Student of II year MBA proposed the vote of thanks. The valedictory function of Rendition 10 was held at 4.00 pm in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block. The esteemed dignitaries on the dais were, the Chief guest, Mr. A.M. Narahari, Registrar of evaluation, St. Aloysius college, the Guests of Honour –Principal In-charge, Professor A.J. Hegde, Rev. Fr. Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, Rev. Fr. Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director, SJEC, the President - Rev. Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Director,SJEC and also Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA, Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Faculty Coordinator and Mr. Kailas Bhat , Student Coordinator.

The Chief Guest, Mr. A.M. Narahari, Registrar of Evaluation, St. Aloysius College, in his address mentioned that the enhancement of knowledge in Dakshina Kannada District should be a yardstick for other districts in Karnataka State.

Rev. Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC congratulated the Department of Business Administration for the success of rendition 10 and hoped that the delegates and paper presenters would be the agents of transformation. Rev. Fr. Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, inspired the students to keep on enhancing their skills and knowledge in the present era of creativity and innovation. The President, Principal In-charge, Professor A.J. Hegde, put forward that in lies within an individual to make their gloomy future a bright one and never leave any opportunity to shape their future.

The welcome address was given by Ms. Shalet, the Rendtion 10 Student Coordinator. The valedictory function was compeered by Ms. Raylen D’souza and Mr. Avinash, the students of

III semester MBA. The SJEC MBA student choir invoked God’s blessings through a prayer song. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Faculty Coordinator. The valedictory function was concluded with the National Anthem.
