The MBA students of SJEC Vamanjoor, accompanied by the Dean and faculty members, celebrated Xmas with the less privileged children of ‘Bala Yesu Nilaya’ situated 5 km from Vamanjoor, on 27^th December 2013.

The students entertained the children with mime, skit, carol singing and games. The children also exhibited their talents by performing dance. Later gifts and sweets were distributed to all children.

Zephyr-14, ‘ Mahadhipatya’ a National-level PG Management Fest organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore was inaugurated on March 4 at 9: 30 am in the Conference Hall, Civil Engineering Block, SJEC.

The function was inaugurated by Dr M S Moodithaya Registrar, Nitte University, with SJEC assistant directors Fr Ajith Menezes and Rev Fr Rohith D’costa, principal Dr Joseph Gonsalvis as guests of honour and director Fr Joseph Lobo presiding over. Dean MBA Dr Prakash Pinto, faculty convener Shakila B and student conveners Golvin Peter and Arundas were also on the dais.

During the two days of the management fest over 250 participants from the B-Schools at the national level participated in 6 events namely ‘Chakravyuha’ (Best Manager), Arthakshetra (Finance), Daksha(HR), Abhiyuthana (Marketing), Ran-Neethi (Operation Strategy), Vid-Yuth ( Business Quiz).

The participants exhibited excellent performance in various events of the fest and the following colleges won the prizes in different categories.

Colloquy – 12, A Symposium on Consumer Rights at St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore

Urging the present youth to fight for their rights as consumers was the main thrust of the keynote address given by MR.M.J. Salian, President, DK District Federation of Consumer Organisations and Consumer Information Centre, Mangalore on the inaugural occasion of “Colloquy – 12”, the one day symposium on Consumer Rights organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore. Mr.M.J.Salian also enlightened the MBA and M Com students on the rights of consumers and outlined the historical background of the development of Consumer movement and Consumer Protection Act in India. The Redressal system accessible to the lay person to fight for his rights and the credible work undertaken by the DK District Federation of Consumer organizations and Consumer Information Centre to serve the society was also highlighted by him. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, welcomed the gathering. The Principal, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, deliberated on the awareness of the rights of the consumers. Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organizing Secretary, Colloquy – 12 proposed the vote of thanks.

Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao. Faculty, Staff Training College, Corporation Bank and Convener, Consumer Forum, Mangalore touched upon Consumer Activism. He related his experiences of fighting for the cause of the consumers for the past 25 years. Giving live consumer cases, he advised the youth to use social networking sites like Face book and Twitter to generate campaign for consumer rights.

Mr. Edwin D’Mello, Senior Vice President and Chairman – Enforcement, DK District Federation of Consumer Organisations and Consumer Information Centre, Mangalore, the Chief Guest for the valedictory function of Colloquy – 12 stated his personal experiences in the struggle for advocacy of consumers’ rights. He cited the cases of MESCOM and Passport Office. He hoped that the students would be inspired by the symposium to take up the issue of consumer rights. Dr Anjali Ganesh, Professor, Department Business Administration welcomed the gathering. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, presided over the function and Ms. Shakila B. Asst Professor, Department of Business Administration proposed the vote of thanks.

Mangalore, September 27: Rendition 12, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest and Productive Dialogue was organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College on 27 September, 2012 on the theme ‘Innovation’. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Mr J.R. Lobo, Honorary Chairman, Administrative Committee of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama; the President - Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director; the Guests of Honour - Rev. Fr Rohit D’Costa, Assistant Director, Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Assistant Director, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice- Principal; Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, Ms Smita Jesduasan, Rendition 12 Faculty Co-ordinator, Ms Jennifer Saldanha and Ms Julia Alvares the student co-ordinators at 9.30 am in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC.

Ms Smita Jesduasan, Renditon 12 Faculty Co-ordinator welcomed the august gathering. Mr J R Lobo, Honorary Chairman, Administrative Committee of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, in his Inaugural Address remarked on the need of innovation in the present era for the growth of the society and nation. He urged the M.B.A and the M.Com students to strive for new ideas and have a lot of them to surge forward and achieve the pinnacle of success. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address cited that the innovations should be new and not imitated. He commented that innovations have been the crux of the development of the Western world and needed to be emphasized in India too. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice – Principal, SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address stressed that innovation in the younger generation should blossom in the age of competitiveness and dynamism. Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director, SJEC in his Presidential Address, mentioned that the programme would foster learning and knowledge to achieve innovation. He added that the students should ooze confidence, collaborate, involve and share in the process of innovation. Ms Jennifer Saldanha, Student Co-ordinator, Rendition 12 proposed the vote of thanks for the Inaugural Function. Ms Lasya N Murthy, student III Semester MBA was the M.C. for the Inaugural Function.

There were 45 paper presentations from the M.Com and M.B.A. students of colleges from Mangalore, Udupi, Puttur, Ujjre, Moodabidri, Bangalore, Mysore and Davangere in the specialization areas of Finance, Marketing and Human Resource. Around 25 students participated in the productive dialogue, the first in Mangalore city and deliberated on ‘Innovation is the creation of the new or the rearranging of the old to make a new thing’.

The programme came to an end with the Valedictory Function. Dr Sr Celine Vas, Principal, St Raymonds College was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Session at 3.30 pm in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC. She cited the examples of small town people who achieved innovations in a small way and made the place a better place for the people of their cities to dwell in. She congratulated the team of MBA for hosting the programme on innovation. Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, in his Guest of Honour Address motivated the students to grasp opportunities to develop their public speaking skills and to be eloquent speakers. He illustrated that the youth should voice their opinions and be proactive. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal, SJEC in his presidential remarks addressed the students on the fear of the unknown which prevents them to innovate in their personal lives. Ms Smita Jesudasan, Rendition 12 Faculty Co-ordinator proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Kevin Pinto, student III Semester MBA was the MC for the Valedictory Function.

Modern business is an integral part of current day society and has embarked the consumer world into an entirely new dimension. As consumers it is of utmost importance to be conscious of our rights and make full use of them as well as to be protected from unscrupulous trade practices. Rendition is the interpretation of the concept to understand, clarify and review the principal points and express the conclusions. Rendition assumes supremacy in the present times wherein management students have to learn to identify, focus and realise their true potential to achieve a competitive advantage.

Genesis, a Forum of MBA Students, St Joseph Engineering College presents an opportunity for the MBA and M.Com students to capitalise upon by organising Rendition 12, a National Level Paper Presentation Contest and a Productive Dialogue on 27^th September, 2012. It is the endeavour to foster knowledge consciousness, congruence with ones values and ethics, commitment to share, collaborate to explore ideas and active engagement to advocate change and innovation.

Call for Papers

The theme ‘Innovation’ is chosen for the Paper Presentation to invoke creative thinking. Rendition is designed to encourage paper submissions from interested MBA and M.Com students that take unique perspectives on the critical issues related to the finance, marketing and human resource management.

Guidelines for the Paper Presentation Contest

The competition is open to all Management and Commerce students from all recognised institutes and universities in India.
Any number of entries can be submitted from a single management institute in different specialization areas.
Co- authored papers will not be accepted.
There is an entry fee of Rs 150/- per person for the paper presentation.
Plagiarism should be avoided.
E-mail the soft copy of the full paper to rendition.paperpresentation@gmail.com by 12^th September, 2012.
After preliminary screening, the selected paper presenters will be notified personally through e-mail by 15^th September, 2012.
The final presentation will be held on 27^th September, 2012 at St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore.
The time allotted for the presentation will be 10 + 5 minutes.
The final presentation should be made in Microsoft Power Point 2007 only.
The decision of the organizers of the contest and the panel of judges will be final and binding on all participants.

Typing: 1.5 line spacing on A4 sized paper.
Font: Times New Roman, Size 12.
Margins: 1.5” (left) and 1” (right).
Aligned and Justified
Limit: 10 to 12 pages (Including Bibliography)
The full paper should include –

ü First page should furnish title of the paper, area of specialisation, authors’ name, name of the institute, email id and phone numbers of the author.

ü Abstract should not exceed 350 words.

ü Bibliography as per APA style.

Invite for Productive Dialogue

The colleges are invited to send a team of three delegates (other than the paper presenters) to participate in the Productive Dialogue which will be held during Rendition-12. Productive dialogue is an in-depth, interactive conversation between students oriented towards identification of key challenges and solutions that can be instrumental to enhance their quality of growth and leadership. The topic of the productive dialogue will be announced on 27^th September, 2012 during Rendition 12.

Registration Fee

A registration fee of Rs. 150/- per person must be paid for the participation in the paper presentation and the productive dialogue.

Prizes to be Won

First Prize of Rs. 1,500/- to be awarded in each area of specialisation of Paper Presentation and the Productive Dialogue.

Inaugural Function of the National Conference "Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence"

Dr Stephen D’Silva, “ 7 – Point Programme” at the Inaugural of National Conference on ‘Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence’, St Joseph Engineering College.

The National Conference on ‘Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 22 March, 2012 at 10.00 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.

Dr Stephen D’ Silva, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in his Key note address asserted the ‘7 – point programme’ comprising Values, Learning, Conviction and Passion, Change, Humility, Team Work and Optimism to be inculcated in individuals to achieve excellence in life. He cited the examples of Tata Group, Mr Jamnalal Bajaj, Mr Phil Knight, Mr Jeff Bessos, Premier Autonomibles, Arthrur Anderson in linkage with the 7-point programme. He testified that the MBA graduates learn 10% from academics, 15% from social and professional networks and 75% from the schools of hard knock. He posed a query to the students to decide on the category of people they belong to – those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened. His concluding remarks were “As you step into the fun filled exciting world, do not forget your parents and teachers as they have created this finished product.”

Mr Albert D’ Souza, Chairman, Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. & Chairman, St. John's College of Engineering & Technology, Mumbai in his Chief Guest Address stated that organizations should focus on quality service and excellence through a continuous monitoring of the gap between the customers’ expectations and service delivered. He narrated the success stories of Marico Industries, Model Co-operative Bank, Mumbai and Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. to illustrate his view point.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the conference a success and hoped that the delegates would have a fruitful deliberation at the two day conference.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address quoted, ‘Chances create fate, Choices create plan and destiny’. He commented that the organizations of today should make good choices rather than a chance to be successful.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director - SJEC in his Presidential Remarks reinforced the theme of the national conference by stating that the organizations should endeavour to be unique in delivery of services to the customers with a smile rather than a mechanistic procedure.

The Inaugural of First year MBA classes for the academic year 2011-12 was on 3rd October, 2011 at 10am at the Mechanical Conference Hall. The chief guest was Mr. Joseph Stephen Pinto, Senior Manager, Head of Anti money Laundering Compliance, HSBC, Middle East. He mentioned in his speech that the students must grab all the opportunities and work on building a good reputation for themselves. Guests of Honour Rev. Fr.Henry Mascarenhas & Rev Fr Valerain D’Souza wished the students all the best. President of the function Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal motivated the young students to put in their best from the day one.

Colloquy-11, A symposium on Wealth Management was organised by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College on 30th September,2011 at the Conference Hall.

The chief guest was the Inaugural function was Dr T. Mallikarjunappa, Professor, Department of Business Administration, Mangalore University. As a key note speaker, he addressed that India has huge pool of human resources who are technically qualified and is a centre of attraction. He referred population as wealth. and insisted on producing goods which are countable to increase the GDP of nation, this will help in growth of the nation. He made a distinction between wealth and profit maximisation and added on saying creation of wealth is superior to profit. Wealth management cannot be looked in a narrow sense and if you earned enough wealth after cutting on breakfast, lunch and dinner, you have not created wealth but destroyed your health. So, we should look at wealth in a broader sense.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC was the Guest of Honour for the inaugural delivered his address by saying that wealth management is not easy and understanding this requires supreme knowledge and it was a priviledge to have Dr T. Mallikarjunappa to give us the inputs.

As a token of respect and gratitude, the Director of SJEC handed over the memento to our Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Valerian D’souza, the Director of SJEC was present for the inaugural. The first session on the topic “Stock Market Investments and Wealth Management” was conducted by Mr. Norbert Shenoy, MD of Arunaanjali Securities, Mangalore. He made a mention that “Market respects no reputation, no academics, but respects one and only thing, that is DISCIPLINE.”

The second session on the topic “Financial Education and Wealth Creation” was conducted by Professor Radhakrishna Sharma, Associate Professor, Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte.

The symposium was attended by the 200 students of both MBA and M.Com programmes of various colleges in Karnataka State.

The valedictory function was graced by Mr. Michael Lobo, Cluster Head, South Canara and North Karnataka, HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd who addressed the issue of Mutual Funds and its affect on the Indian economy. He stated the role of mutual funds in risk reduction, benefits reaped by the investors from the professional management skills of the fund managers.

Rendition 11, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 29 September, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC. The dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad as the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC as the Guests of Honour, Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza as the President, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, Ms Smita Jesudasan, Rendition Organizing Secretary, Mr Rayan D’Souza, Mr Lanston Pinto and Ms Divya Fernandes, the Student coordinators.

Dr Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad in his Inaugural Address remarked that the foresight of the college in organizing the paper presentation contest for the MBA and M.Com students was commendable. He added that the post graduate students should focus and imbibe soft skills apart from the technical skills to succeed in the corporate world.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the paper presenters a success and hoped that they would enrich knowledge and be open to learning.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director, SJEC in his Guest of Honour address commented that the paper presentation would be a success when God showers his blessings and graces.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC in his Presidential Remarks stressed that the paper presentation contest would provide fodder for the thought provoking process of knowledge and learning. He encouraged the students to read and improvise on their factual and empirical acumen.

“Together everyone achieves more”

The placement cell under the guidance of Mr Peter Brian Benjamin,Assistant Professor organized a one day placement workshop on the following topics: Connectivity & Inter-connectivity, Organizational culture, Conflict & Stress Management and Being selective for success.

Mr. Arun John Mathais, an energetic personality was the spokesperson for the day. He had the charm in him to capture the audience and have an everlasting impact on our lives.

In the morning session Mr. Arun spoke on Connectivity & Inter-connectivity. It means “if you want something you never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done before.” And hence “all you do is all you have done, is all you get what you have got.” The next session was on Organizational culture which is referred to as the DNA of an organization. The individual’s DNA should gel with the organizational DNA and only then the talent can be acquired and retained.

In the post lunch session on Conflict & Stress Management, he elaborated on the causes of conflicts, the ways to resolve them and the means through which we can manage stress. The last session was on being selective for success in which he spoke about time management and its importance in our work environment.

All good things do come to an end but the goodness of good things lasts a lifetime. It is good to build rather than learn and relearn.

Ms. Lin Pinto, 3rd Sem-MBA welcomed the gathering. We invoked god’s blessings through a prayer song led by Mr. Lanston Pinto and the choir members. The sessions were very educative as the spokesperson used his personal experiences as examples for various situations and interacted with the audience by answering all the quality queries. The session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Martin D’souza, 3rd Sem-MBA.

The session helped us to explore alternate methods and ways to deal more effectively with the problems that would be coming our way in the corporate world.

Second semester 91.37% results

Out of 58 students who appeared for the May/June 2011, (Visvesvaraya Technological University), 10 students have secured First class with a distinction. 40 students have passed in First class and 3 have passed in second class.

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore organized a guest lecture on “Optimum Performance” as a part of SJEC – MBA Special Lecture Series on 09th May, 2011 at 9.00 am in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC. Mr. Albert D’Souza, Managing Director, Printania Offsets Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai and member of the Governing Board, St Joseph Engineering College delivered a lecture on “Optimum Performance”. He motivated the students to come out of their casual approach and give their best performance in anything they do. He cited the living examples of Boman Irani, Amitabh Bachan, Sachin Tendulkar and David Hussey who made it to the winning streak despite their humble beginnings and weaknesses. These personalities have performed at their optimum level because they have got into the depth of their subject.

He encouraged the MBA students to be more responsible, progressive and to come out of their comfort zones since they will be the future decision makers, policy makers and go – getters in the society. He asked the students to reflect on this quote,”Doing nothing is better than being busy doing nothing”. He explained the quote by stating that withdrawal from daily routine is better than the pretense of being busy doing nothing. His concluding remarks were “When everyone was crawling, I started walking, I became a successful person. When everyone was walking, I started running, I became a winner. When everyone was running I started flying, I became a winner”.

The function was inaugurated by the Chief Guest – Mr Allen Pereira, Former CMD, Bank of Maharashtra; Guests of Honour – Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC, Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Asst Director – SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, President – Rev. Fr Valerian D'Souza, Director – SJEC, Dr. Prakash Pinto – Dean - MBA, Ms Smita Jesudasan , Faculty Coordinator and Kailas Bhat, Student Co-ordinator.

Mr Allen Pereira, Former Chairman and Managing Director, Bank of Maharashtra in his Inaugural Address remarked on the significance of Philanthropy in the world of scams and economic slowdown. He stated that the students should have the intent to give rather than receive and they should lay down their footprints for their peers to follow. He stated the proverb, 'Do unto others what you expect from them'. He cited the example of Chen Shu-Chu, a 59-year old selling vegetables in Taiwan's Taitung market since 1963 who was recognized for her philanthropy. Her donations include US$32,000 for a children's fund and US$144,000 to help build a library at the school.

Rev Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address affirmed that the MBA and MCOM students should give time, talents and treasure philanthropically to the society and emerge as transformers to make the world a quality dwelling place.

Dr Joeph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address greeted the participants and expressed that the students should learn to give wholeheartedly with whatever minimal they possess and receive.

Rev. Fr Valerian D'Souza, Director – SJEC in his Presidential Remarks commented that the theme of Zephyr 11 – 'Philanthropism' was befitting the current scenario. He also added that philanthropy should not be sermonized but practiced by the students as a way of life.

Dr Oswald Mascarenhas, S.J, St Aloysius Institute of Management and Information Technology in his Valedictory Address stated that the innovative business model should constitute creation and sustainability of customer and owner value with the aid of key resources and key processes to be on the competitive map. He added that innovation is not free from risk. He stressed that an innovative business model can reshape an industry or redistribute billion of rupees of value.

Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour Address narrated a story of a teacher who encouraged her students to ride a bicycle by adding additional side wheels to remove from their minds the fear of falling. He remarked that new ideas should be sought and implemented and the time tested and traditional models of success should be restricted if an organization has to innovate and survive in the market place.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour Address pronounced that the conference was persuasive towards the focal need of an organization to innovate in the times of economic slowdown, global turbulence and natural disasters.

The delegates furnished the feedback of the conference and appreciated the noteworthy action of the Department of Business Administration in organizing the National Conference on the apt theme at the right time. Ms Aruna Menezes, Assistant Professor, Alva’s Institute of Engineering and Technology expressed that the content of the conference would lead to deeper explorations and could be an area of research for both academicians and practitioners. Ms Reema Frank, Assistant Professor, P.A. College of Engineering hoped that the conference would be organsied in the years to come and contribute to academic growth and excellence. Ms Rita Battacharjee, Students Counsellor, K R S College, Tiruchengode was impressed with the hospitality of the staff and students of the Department of Business Administration.

Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, Proprietor and Director, Achal Industries, in his Presidential Address cited the success initiatives of Achal, Hindustan Univlever Ltd. – Mangalore Branch, MCF with respect to innovation in its various operations. He articulated that innovation is a way of life in the day to day activities of the line and staff. He affirmed that if the business models in the book titled ‘Business Transformation Strategies’ authored by Rev Dr Oswald Mascarenhas adapted to the Indian context could generate value worth rupees twenty crores.

The National Conference on ‘Strategising Innovative Business Models’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 24 March, 2011 at 10.00 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.

Mr Jayanth Nadiger, Trade Commissioner of Belgium for South India and Aryabhata Award Winner, 2009 in his key note address remarked that the foresight of the college in organizing the national conference on the apt theme ‘Strategising Innovative Business Models’ in the era of globalization and economic slowdown was commendable. He added that the companies should build on focus and differentiation to implement the strategies and also that the essence of the strategy should be what not to do. He cited the case study of ING Direct, US who have had a fabulous growth in a short span of their existence. He implied that the companies should make resource demands and their capabilities should be synergized to be innovative at the non-insular market place.

Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate in his Guest of Honour Address commented that the strategy should be a clear vision of the road ahead as to where to go and where not to. He quoted the story of Alice in Wonderland when Alice enquired from the Cheshire cat the direction to proceed and the cat replied that if she does not know where she wanted to go, it would not matter which turn she would take. He gave the acronym of 3G – ‘Google’ where there should be a search of new ideas, ‘Global Positioning System’ where the company should make its presence known on the global map and ‘God’ who will help those who help themselves.

Dr Francis Cherunilam, a post-graduate in Economics and Business Administration and a doctorate in the area of International `Business, is a prolific writer and has to his credit about 20 books and over a hundred research papers and articles. He is at present a professor at the School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology. Prof. B. V. Raghunandan, Professor at S. V. S. He has authored several books widely referred by the students and the faculty at the graduate and post graduate level. Dr T. G. Vijaya

Dr T. G. Vijaya is a Masters in Organizational Behaviour and a Ph.D. in Industrial Psychology from Madras University. She has over 15 years of experience as a teacher, trainer and consultant. She currently works as a Professor at PSG College of Technology. Apart from being associated with large business houses in the area of Human Resource Consulting she is also actively associated with schools as a career consultant. Mr Sudhir P Ghate

Mr Sudhir P Ghate is the Chairman of Magnum Intergrafiks Private Limited, a small town advertising agency which rides the wave of success to emerge as one among the top 30 advertising agencies of the country in a short span of 15 years. Think big and act big seems to be the mantra that guides Ghate. He is an entrepreneur and organizer par excellence, who believes in leading from the centre rather than from the front. One can but admire his fortitude in establishing his advertising business with Mangalore as the head office only to spread its tentacles in different parts of the country by setting up 14 branches. Ghate was dismissed from college for his proactive role in opposing emergency. He was 1st degree student in Canara College, where his mother Sharada Ghate was the faculty member. Sudhir was the student leader in charge of young Satyagrahis who was entrusted with the mission of motivating the student community. After completing graduation, Sudhir joined Chartered Accountant Ganesh Shenoy in Mangalore. When Ganesh left for Dubai in 1989, Ghate followed him only to return as he could not live in a place with restricted freedom. 1989 also proved to be a turning point of his career as he went to America and identified four areas with potential for business in the service sector namely credit card services, general insurance, T V Channels and Advertising. He chose advertising for its low investment and hit the bull’s eye.

Fr Oswald A. J. Mascarenhas SJ

Fr Oswald A. J. Mascarenhas SJ, was born in Mumbai, India, and studied at St Aloysius College Middle School, High School and College for twelve years before he joined the Karnataka Jesuit Province in 1955. During his priestly formation, he obtained Licentiate in Philosophy (LPh) from Sacred Heart College, Shembaganur, Tamilnadu, Licentiate in Sacred Theology (LST) from De Nobili College, Poona, and Masters in Philosophy from Dharwar University, South India. Ordained in 1966, he taught philosophy and sacred theology at the St. Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary in Mangalore during 1967-1970, after which he was sent to the United States to pursue studies in Business Economics.

Mr Kumble Narasimha Prabhu

Mr Kumble Narasimha Prabhu is the CEO and Managing Director of Manipal–Ace Event Management Co.(P) Ltd., Mangalore. a multi talented and live wire personality of Mangalore. A Mechanical Engineer from MIT Manipal, Kumble Narasimha Prabhu is now a successful businessman with diversified interests like solar equipment and power generation products. Kumble is also a certified financial consultant with a credible corporate and retail clientele. Kumble is born with a host of natural talent which includes but not limited to acting, singing, dancing, mimicry and shayari. He has hosted innumerable stage shows and compered several high profile programs. On the stage, Kumble is known for his spontaneity and ability to fluently adapt to a suddenly changed situation. Mr Prabhu has made an indelible mark in organizations which he has headed like Mangalore Jaycees, Lions Club Mangalore, etc.. He is also currently the immediate past president of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Giridhar Prabhu is 44 year old businessman from Mangalore. He is the Owner of Achal Industries and also Director of Achal Cashews Private Limited. Achal Industries is a Family business since 1977 and is considered a Small Scale Industry (SSI) since 1981. Achal Industries has one of the most modern manufacturing cashew facilities in the country and has qualified for being one of the first units recognized for In-process Quality Control by the Export Inspection Agency of India. It is also manufacturing Cashew nut Shell Liquid. G. GIRIDHAR PRABHU is now the Member of the Steering Committee on Cashew under the Chairmanship of Secretary ( Agriculture & Co-operation) , Government of India, Ministry of Agriculture, New Delhi and President , Indian Liberal Group, Karnataka . He was the Vice Chairman of Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) & Committee of Administration of the CEPC of India since 1987 and has participated in Trade delegations. He was a member of the Indian Cashewnut Development Council representing the industry and has taken keen interest in the Cashewnut Development program of the country. He is also deeply interested in technical matters related to packaging, control of pesticides as well as promotion. An active member in various Trade Bodies, he is past President of the Mangalore Cashew Manufacturers’ Association, Mangalore. He was the Hon. Secretary of the Canara Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Mangalore for 4 years and Treasurer for 2 years and editor of the Journal for a number of years. He is also a Visiting Faculty at T.A. Pai Management Institute and Guest Lecturer at other Colleges and University. He is the Convener of Karavali Business Forum.

It was with a great sense of loss when we heard of Msgr. Fredrick V. Pereira’s death. Msgr. Pereira was the former Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore went to the heavenly abode at 11.30 am Sunday 27th of Feb. 2011. He has also served as the campus minister in St Joseph Engineering College.

Msgr Periera was rushed to Fr Mullers hospital at 11.15 am on 27th February, 2011 because of a sudden heart failure. Msgr Periera breathed his last at 11.30 am at Fr Mullers hospital.
