Want to create professional quality design without shelling out $$ for Photoshop? Then this workshop is for you!

In this day-long workshop, we'll go in depth to discover how to use two fantastic Open Source Design Applications: the GNU Image Manipulation Program (AKA GIMP), and Inkscape.

The GIMP provides layers, effects, painting tools, and all of the
features that you have come to expect from a fully featured imaging application like Adobe Photoshop. Inkscape is a vector-based illustration and layout application, similar to Adobe Illustrator in its ability to manipulate text, shapes, paths, vector points, and colors.

Because these programs are Open Source Software, you benefit from the work of thousands of volunteer and professional developers, without having to pay anything for the use of the software.

In this workshop, you will learn to use these tools by doing a poster project step-by-step. By the end of this workshop you will be able to effectively use painting and drawing tools, brushes, layers, path manipulation, photo manipulation, effects, rulers and grids to meet against your most challenging design needs.

WIKIS HAVE COME A LONG WAY! They're easier to use than they were just a short time ago, and put the power of collaboration in your hands!

Librarians are constantly hearing that they need to collaborate, connect and contribute with others in their community and the profession. This workshop introduces the concept of a wiki and illustrates how to set one up in your library.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

Identify the various wiki types and list their advantages and disadvantages,
Describe examples of the use of wikis in libraries.

Learning from the variety of creative, productive, and effective wiki examples, you will set up your own wiki and will see firsthand how easy it is to set up and use a wiki to collaborate with your colleagues, connect to other professionals and community members, and contribute to collective knowledge online.

Nicole C. Engard is the Open Source Evangelist at LibLime. In her position, she directs the company’s open source education endeavors. In addition to her daily responsibilities, Nicole has been published in several library journals and keeps the library community up to date on web technologies via her website “What I Learned Today...” (www.web2learn.net). In 2007, Nicole was named one of Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers.

Booktalking is a tremendous tool for promoting your collection and attracting readers. Join our speaker Jennifer Hubert, author of the website Reading Rants! Out of the Ordinary Booklists for Teens and book of the same title, in a fun, useful, interactive presentation. You will learn tips and techniques that will help newbie and seasoned booktalkers alike craft successful booktalks that connect young adults with books they will love!

Jennifer is a self-described YA librarian, book reviewer, author, quilter and reality TV junkie. She helps librarians connect with young adults, and helps young adults connect with books they love through her writing, blogging, and presenting. When she's not reading or writing about great young adult books, Jennifer works directly with teens in her position as the Middle School Librarian at the Little Red School House & Elisabeth Irwin High School in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.

In addition to Jennifer's presentation, we will also hear about the new Teen Spaces at Atlantic City and Camden County Libraries. There will also be time for you to talk and share with each other.

In this time of increased competition for limited financial resources from grant makers, understanding how to write a winning proposal is crucial. Grant writing is a skill: one needs to learn what works and how to make it work. After this workshop you will:

In this workshop, we will discuss five key principles of communication and how they relate to staff/patron interactions, and we will define customer service and the behaviors that boost it from good to exceptional.

In a variety of fun activities, participants will practice: handling difficult situations, using four practical steps for saying "no", active listening, and overcoming defensiveness. In addition to supporting individual service skills, we will discuss how managers can promote good service throughout the library by creating an institutional service attitude and ethic.

Pres4Lib2009: A Presentation Camp for Speakers/Trainers

If so, you will not want to miss the inaugural Pres4Lib Camp on June 12, 2009 in Princeton, NJ.

The camp is a true grass-roots collaborative effort, being co-sponsored by SJRLC, CJRLC and the Princeton Public Library (and anybody else that wants to help!)

Pres4Lib2009 is a presentation camp and will be conducted as an unconference. This will be a great opportunity for presenters and trainers (and those interested in presenting and training) in the library community to network and share their tips, technologies, best practices, and experiences.Highlights of the day will include two rounds of lightning talks, three breakout sessions, and a chance to witness Battle Decks in action.

A Pres4Lib2009 wiki (http://pres4lib.pbwiki.com ) has been established to answer questions about the camp, allow for collaboration and suggestions prior to the day and to record the happenings on the actual day.

Registration is limited and the cost is free, except for a nominal $25 charge to cover the cost of food (breakfast, lunch and snacks). The day will culminate with an optional dinner outing to The Triumph Brewing Company, a local favorite in Princeton.
