After a phone conversation at the end of last year, about 6 months of international trading, stacks of paper work and inane procedures I’m happy to announce that Vincent and I have successfully managed to start a full-blown, proper skateboard company – thereby realizing a dream that we shared since the days of our early teenage years.

Slip Skateboards, our own skate co is the realization of that dream.

The mission behind Slip Skateboards? To improve the local skateboarding scene by providing professional quality skateboard products at realistic prices.

Both Vincent and I was completely flabbergasted at the prices you’d pay in the shops today, and after a bit of hunting around we realized that we can provide the same professional quality skateboards at up to 50% less. Obviously quality was a big concern for us, and after a thorough testing phase of samples (you have to realize here that at 110kg I make a pretty decent test subject!!!) we received from our supplier we were happy that we could go ahead and indeed offer professional quality products at realistic, reasonable prices.

Brand new deck for R600? Slip decks cost R300 with grip tape included. Completes costing R1600 in the shop – a Slip complete will cost you R650! Considering that the last pro deck I bought in 1993 cost me R320 I think that selling decks at R300 now is definitely beneficial to improving the overall skateboarding scene.

This is truly a dream come true for us, and we already have a bunch of guys that love our decks and the quality of our products – and that is exactly what we aimed to achieve…

Below you’ll see our first 2 deck designs. Feel free to head on over to slipskateboards.co.za to see what our clients/friends have to say about our products, and to see what all we have on offer.

And here’s a pic of Centurion skater and long time friend of Slip Skateboards Werner Lamprecht going huge on our Carbon model. Werner was one of the guys that initially helped us test the quality of our products.

Just over a year ago, before my official comeback to skateboarding I found myself standing at the edge of a pool armed with all the intentions in the world to absolutely, completely, and utterly shred the socks off that pool – only to walk away with my tail betwen my legs with a set of soiled shorts while almost crying like a little school girl…

That pool’s been on my mind though, and this year on our annual winter trek to the sunny coastal town of Umhlanga I found myself once again standing at the edge of the kidney pool at Wavehouse – but this time, I actually got in, got on my board, and had myself some fun!

I’ve never been any good at skating transitions and I had a hard time adjusting to the steep, short transitions of the shallow end, and then blasting down into the huge 12ft wall at the opposite end of the pool. 2 session later and I found myself carving blissfully around the pool and having a complete and utter blast while doing it!

Pool skating is innately hardcore. It’s different. It’s rad, raw, and hectic. I nail 6 walls in a line and I’m breathing like a race horse after a marathon race. Pool skating is undeniably bad ass – no 2 ways about it…

So now I find myself obsesing over tracking down the next pool session. I sit on youtube during the day watching classic pool runs by the legends like SALBA, and Duane Peters. Pool skaters are an undeniable sub-culture within the skateboarding scene for whom you have to tip your hat, because every single dude that’s ever shredded a pool properly has achieved something that your average mere mortal most likely will never have the cajounes for…

P.S. Anybody know of a pool in the Gauteng area I can skate please drop me a message. I need to find an available, skateable pool…

After 2 good visits with my Chiro this week and handfuls of Myprodol I managed to go out for a skate again today. The strapping really works very well, but I took it really slow – my Chiro was joking that he’d see me on Monday again, and I really can’t afford to foob this ankle again. Anyway, 1 whole session filled with manuals and my ankle is still good and getting better – maybe next time I’ll try a shove-it!

Well, here you go – one busted ankle. No fracture, and the verdict is still out on a proper ligament tear, but given the amount of pain it produces when the myprodols wear off I’d say it’s busted well and proper enough.

Part of the fun of skating is discovering new spots with cool things to skate. With everything being all nice and quiet today I did a bit of driving around to see if I can find something different, and I was very happy when I discovered these 2 very skate-friendly ledges in the loading zone of one of our local shopping centers. Both ledges had a really smooth steel coping around the edges which made for a real little skate-fest after I applied some candle wax to them, and I skated these ledges completely undisturbed for the better part of 2 hours (with a water break of course…)

I even had the local security guard making friends, and after a brief chat he had a go at riding on my board, and he let my ride his Segway.Funnily enough we both almost bailed and decided to stick to our own respective rides.

Hopefully the security guards and the locals will remain friendly, because this is one killer spot to skate!

Honestly though, if you don’t cringe at least once watching these then there’s something wrong with you, like the kind of wrong where you hurt little animals and get some sick grin on your face while you’re doing it…

P.S. Keep an eye open on all the ankle breakers at around 50 – 60% of the vid, you can’t actually really miss them!
