SLC Banning Backyard Ramps?

Skateboarding is very quickly becoming an illegal activity outside the fences of a skatepark. But who would have thought that someone would actually go out of their way to make skateboarding illegal on your own property? Celtek owner Bjorn Lienes shares the story: Salt Lake City, UT �?? A new ordinance has been passed in Salt Lake City to ban mini-ramps, even in your own backyard! Citing noise pollution as the basis, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department added a clause to its Regulation 21 that bans all �??sporting ramps�?? (as they call them) from being constructed or used within 800 feet of any �??dwelling�??. Apparently, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department hasn�??t experienced the fun of a backyard mini-ramp session with friends. We�??ve had so many good times with our mini ramp, especially when Celtek team rider Lizard King stopped by and showed us all how it�??s done. Skateboarding is already illegal in just about every public place other than a dedicated skate park, so the thought of it also being illegal on our own property sent us all into a bit of a tailspin. We at Celtek signed the petition to get public officials to take action against this ridiculous regulation, and urge you to do the same. You know we live our lives watching watered down contests and everyone slangin their new Nike SB’s or the matching custom New Era fitteds. We tend to get off tack a bit. Every once in awhile an amazing contest will go down in the history books and show us what Skateboarding was founded upon and what it should really be about. Thrasher decided to throw an event that would teach us this important lesson. Check out the footy:

Darkside’s Pre-Season Kickoff

Levi Love - Benefit Skate Contest

On Saturday I was lucky enough to see a large amount of the skate industry come together in support of a fallen shredder. Levi Huffman suffered a severe head injury on International Go Skate Day, he was in the ICU for weeks. The reason that so many people came together for Levi is his amazing character. I have a huge amount of respect or Levi, he is the kind of person who will go out of his way to help anyone he can.Like how he takes a group of little skate groms to a different skatepark that they wouldn’t normally have access to each week. Every time I skate with Levi he goes out and teaches someone something new or give them the confidence in themselves to do more than they thought the could. Levi and his fiancée are expecting their first child later this year, he will be an amazing father.On the 12th Board Cartel put together a skate contest along with Woodward to raise money for Levi and his family. The people at Cartel got everyone they could involved and before we knew it there were over 20 sponsors sending product to help Levi. Product from Circa, Fallen, Mystery, Zero, Black Box, Anon, Nixon, Oakley, Element, RVCA, Bern helmets, Neff, Etnies, and boardpusher.com. The local shops, Thirfty Stick, 303 Boards, and Board Room also pitched in and each gave out package of gear for the event. More photos after the jump… Board Pusher also ran a limited run of Levi’s signature deck with ALL the procedes going to Levi. Much respect The contest started with the beginner comp. Here are some of the highlights. Next came the Intermediate group, these guys were impressive. Little Ziek with a FS 5-0 on the round rail.John with a FS 50-50.Ziek again with a FS feeble. Melon over the table. BS board on the down bar. FS board slide.After the intermediate kids were done throwing down we jumped up on the 6ft pipe for one of the best shows and progression sessions I have seen in all summer. Al - Melon lien to disaster . Ian Coder BS rock revert the Method Al with a BS boneless on the extension. BS Feeble to fakie Fastplant Kevin Senes - FS Feeble Al - Stalefish Handplant Melon to fakie After the intense pipe runs things started to really go off on the street course with the Advanced riders.
