An early start for the ski season

The winter is already here, at least in the Romanian mountains. In the last days heavy snow fall producing a half-meter snow layer in some ski resorts. So, the luckiest resorts are eager to open the 2009-2010 winter season already from this week-end.

The Maramures region has again the first ski resorts in Romania that will open the ski season. With a snow layer bigger than half-meter, all slopes in Cavnic resort will be opened from this Saturday. The same thing may happen in Suior resort, where the snow layer has almost 50 cm.

If it's to difficult for you to get to Maramuresa region, another possibility may be Arieseni. Here the snow layer is about 50 cm and there are some promises that the slopes may open Saturday.

We're hoping that the snow will last and this will not be just a false alarm for an early warm-up for the skies.

SKI-in-Romania.com team wishes you a good 2009-2010 winter season.

Spring is coming

After a snowy March that offered the best ski runs of the season, the warm temperatures of spring are coming on us. The high temperatures started the big melt early this week, and right now there are few places that offer good snow for skiing/snowboarding.

Prahova Valley
The winter season is almost at its end in many of the valley's resorts. Azuga, Predeal and Poiana Brasov we're hitted hard by the warm weather, but some ski possibilities can still be found on the upper slopes of Poiana Brasov. Still, the best place to ski in the area is Sinaia, where at 2000m altitude of Valea Dorului ski run the snow layer is big enough even now in April. Also, fair conditions could be found in Busteni.

Jiu Valley / Banat
If the resort of Parang lost almost all its snow by now (so no more skiing here), Straja still hangs on, but hardly because the snow is wet and the slopes developed many dirt patches. A little to the west, Muntele Mic still has about half meter high snow on it's ski runs, so it's a good choice for a spring skiing week-end.

Maramures
This is an area that still has fair snow even now in the first days of April. Suior, Cavnic and Borsa (the upper slope on Stiol) offer skiable slopes, at least for this week-end.

Transylvania
Arieseni and Paltinis are the only resorts with snow on their ski runs, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Moldova
Vatra Dornei resort has closed its runs for some weeks now.

Warning! If you go on the slopes this week-end, watch out because the snow is slushy and hard to ski over.

A snowy March

The season is far to end even if we're already in the middle of March. The last days brought a lot of snow in many of the Romanian resorts improving the slope conditions.

Maramures:
The slopes of Cavnic, Izvoare, Suior and Borsa are in good conditions. The natural snow from Cavnic assures a good base layer on the slopes, in Borsa only the upper slope of Stiol offers good ski conditions, and in Suior the snow making abilities keep the slopes in good shape.

Transylvania:
Arieseni and Paltinis are the only resorts in the area that offers good snow on their slopes.

Prahova Valley:
The best place to ski in the valley is definitely Sinaia where the snow layer is about one meter high. Good conditions can be found also in Azuga, Busteni and on the upper slopes of Poiana Brasov.

Jiu Valley / West Romania:
All the resorts from this part of the country received heavy snows in the last days. With a snow layer of one meter high in Muntele Mic, Semenic and Ranca, and higher then half a meter in Straja and Parang, the slopes are in perfect shape.

Off piste:
The avalanche risk is high everywhere in the mountains, so beware and as much ans possible don't leave the prepared slopes. Because of the avalanche risk, The Inferno race from Balea Lake that should have take this Saturday was postponed too.

Winter returns on the slopes

After the warm weather from last week, the winter comes back now. Most of the Romanian winter resorts received a good chunk of fresh snow that improved the snow lacking slopes. The conditions are still fair to good, but at least tourists have more options to ski now.

Maramures
It snowed well in Borsa and Cavnic, the slopes of these two resorts were groomed and reopened, and will be ready for this weekend.

Transylvania
No fresh snow in these parts of the country, the only resort that still survives is Arieseni. But please be carefully, the slopes have ice patches.

Prahova Valley
Not too much fresh snow but enough for some of the slopes. There are fair to good conditions for skiing in Sinaia and Busteni, unfortunately Poaiana Brasov and Predeal slopes are still in bad shape.

Jiu Valley
Straja and Parang received good quantities of fresh snow these days. If in Parang the slopes were completely without snow last week, now the snow measures more than 20 cm and provides a good restart for the resort. Straja stayed better during the warm period and the new snow just added over the old one on the slopes making them good for skiing.

The snowing will continue in most of the Romanian winter resorts, so the conditions should improve significantly in the following days.

Romanian slopes are in bad shape

Due to the high temperatures and the rains that occurred in the last days, the majority of the ski slopes from Romania are in a real bad shape. To be more exact, just a few of them are still usable: Arieseni, Busteni, Harghita Bai, Poiana Brasov (Bradul slope) or Sinaia (Valea Dorului slope), but even these have patches of ice and even dirt.

This weather hit hard even in some of the "safe-case" winter resorts like Azuga, Borsa, Cavnic, Straja, Parang or Poiana Brasov (the slopes from Postavarul) that had plenty of snow every year and that kept their slopes open until late March or even early April. We're hoping that more snow and low temperatures will come shortly, at least the meteorologists are optimistic and predict good snows starting with 1st of February.

Slope conditions for the 1st of December long week-end

More snow had fallen in the Romanian ski resorts in the last days, so the Romanian National Day week-end looks very good for the winter sports fans. More and more resorts have groomed their slopes and prepared them for the skiers, or snowboarders, here is the actual situation:

Maramures
- Borsa: 25-40 cm of snow, it looks like the slopes are in fair condition but their not been groomed yet.
- Cavnic: 50-80 cm of snow, all the slopes are opened, groomed and offer good ski conditions.
- Izvoare: 60-70 of de snow, despite the good layer of snow the slopes are still closed. Only the Poiana Soarelui slope is open, the others will open only after 1st of December.
- Mogosa: 40-70 cm of snow, the Moski slope has been groomed and is opened.
- Suior: 25-40 cm of snow, there are chances that the slopes will open this weekend but only if the snow and temperature will permit.

Transylvania
- Arieseni: 50-80 cm of snow, good ski conditions.
- Baisoara and Paltinis resorts don't have enough snow yet, so their slopes are still closed.

Prahova Valley
- Azuga and Busteni resorts have little snow, so their slopes will probably be closed.
- Poiana Brasov: 30-60 cm of snow, big chances for the lifts to work (at least some of them), fair to good ski conditions on the slopes.
- Predeal: 20-30 cm of snow, poor to fair ski conditions for skiing or snowboarding. If the snow will be enough, the lifts will be open.
- Sinaia: small chances for ski possibilities, the snow is still not enough - only 20-30 cm.

Jiu Valley / Banat
- Straja: 10-25 cm of snow, very small chances for any slope to open this week-end.
- Parang: 15-40 cm of snow, the chairlift is open and there are fair ski conditions.
- Ranca: small snow layer, the slopes are closed.
- Muntele Mic: over 50 cm of snow, but there are some problems with the chairlift that offer access to the resort.

Moldova
- Vatra Dornei: 10-25 cm of snow, their were fair ski conditions only on the Dealu Negru slope.

A new season is about to start

Winter has come to Romania! In the last days a big amount of snow had fallen in all Romanian ski resorts:

Maramures: has the first slope open this year too, Icoana slope from Cavnic has been opened today. At this moment there are 30-50 cm of snow in Cavnic, 20-40 cm in Borsa, 20 cm in Izvoare and 15-30 cm at Suior/Mogosa.

Transylvania: there's a lot of snow in Arieseni already, 50 cm, and it looks like the slopes will be opened soon. It snowed in the rest of the resorts too, there are 20 cm of snow in Baisoara, 5 cm in Paltinis and 10 cm in Sovata.

Prahova Valley: it's snowing for two days now, so there is a lot of snow here too. Right now there are 30-50 cm of snow in Poiana Brasov, 30-40 cm in Predeal, 15 cm in Sinaia, 10 cm in Azuga and 5cm in Busteni.

West: big numbers for the resorts from this area too, 50 cm of snow in Muntele Mic, 40 cm in Semenic, 20 cm in Parang and 15 cm in Ranca.

Moldova: Vatra Dornei has 10 cm of snow.

This is the first snow of the season though, so don't jump on your skis right away and wait a little so the snow layer will grow. The forecast looks good and more snow will come in the next days. Beside the one slope in Cavnic, more slopes may open in the next days (more probably in the next week-end) in Arieseni, Muntele Mic, Poiana Brasov or Predeal.

SKI-in-Romania.com team wishes you a good 2008-2009 winter season.

After 5 month of snow the resorts have almost closed all their slopes ending one of the longest winter season in many years. Right know there are fair conditions only on high altitude slopes from Sinaia (Dorului Valley), Muntele Mic, Borsa or Ranca. From now on, until the snow will be all gone somewhere in June, the only good options will be the off-piste areas like Balea Lac or any valley from Fagaras, Bucegi or Rodnei Mountains. But please be careful with the snow conditions and avalanche risk.

It looks like the snow will resist a little bit longer on the Romanian slopes. Even if we're at the end of season, the weather says NO and sends more and more snow. Most of the Romanian resorts have improved their slope conditions in the last days, so try to profit from the new snow before the spring temperatures will take over.

Snowparks in Romania

There are not too many snow parks in Romanian winter resorts, the only ones that appear every season are mainly developed by the boarders pushed by their hobby. Still, year after year the offer get bigger and bigger as the request grows and the competition between resorts it's getting sharper. Here we'll try to present you some of the snow parks that we know about:

FreshPark
Capra Hotel, Fagaras Mountains

The snow park was built by the Fresh-Meat team near the Hotel Capra which is right on the other side of the mountain comparing to Balea Lac. The park has 500 square meters and contains kickers (small, medium, "normal"), rails (straight, rainbow, left-C si right-C rails), wall-ride. There's also floodlit, so the boarders can enjoy the park even during the dark hours. The snow park will officially open during the 16-17 February week-end and will host contests and snowboard learning sessions during the rest of the winter/snow season, that will end somewhere in May.
Till now we know for sure that the following resorts will be open for skiers and boarders: Arieseni, Cavnic, Izvoare, Suior/Mogosa, Borsa, Paltinis and Parang. Due to the big amount of snow fallen, the ski runs have been groomed and leveled for a perfect experience. The snow layer in these resorts varies between 50 cm and 100 cm except Parang and Paltinis where it's about 30 cm.

Even that it's only November the ski runs from Cavnic, Arieseni, Parang and Paltinis have been opened from this week-end already. We can't say yet that the season has started, but if you're really into snow sports than you can take advantage.
It looks like the new season of 2007-2008 will be reacher in snow then the previous one - has been previewed by the weather mens and by the weather itself too. Right now it's snowing in many of the Romanian ski resorts and it will snow more in the following days. For this moment we have 40cm of snow in Cavnic, 20cm in Paltinis, 7cm in Straja and 40cm in Parang but please don't rush to the slopes, let them have some more snow to be completely covered - anyway, the lifts are not started yet in any of the resorts. For the new season the resorts administrators have some news too, the access road to Straja has been paved completely, in Azuga the old chair-lift it's changed with a new gondola, another new gondola it's installed in Sinaia and will connect Cota 1000 (Taverna Sarbului) with Cota 1400 to easy the access of the tourists that 'till now had to use the not-very-good road that connects Sinaia with Cota 1400.

We'll try for this season too to keep you informed about the ski conditions on slopes, about the lifts prices and will try to give you any news that come from the resorts.
As most of the people declared that the end of the ski season it's days ahead, the nature wanted to speak against it by letting some snow to fall. Although the new snow will give only few days more to the skiers. The season already ended in the low-altitude resorts, and in the rest ones the ski domain is getting smaller and smaller because of the snow melt. Good conditions, with slopes covered 100% in snow, can still be found on the upper slopes in Poiana Brasov or Borsa, the rest of the ski resorts have spotted slopes.

As the ski season is about to end on the arranged slopes, the freeride areas like Balea Lac or Busteni are getting more and more attractive as the days goes by. This is happening because the snow layer it's getting settle and reduce the risk of avalanches.

Due to the last snowfalls almost all the ski slopes from Maramures have one meter of snow depth. The slopes from Mogosa, Suior and Cavnic have a snow layer of 80-130 cm, on the upper slopes of Borsa there is more than one meter of snow but only about 30 cm on the lower slopes, and in Izvoare the snow layer has more than half a meter.

All the ski slopes from Maramures are groomed and ready to welcome the skiers, and Cavnic resort waits the advance skiers with a brand new slope designed specially for them in the Roata complex.
Finally it snowed in all the Romanian ski resorts. Some slopes were opened for the first time this season, it's the case of Suior, Izvoare, Vatra Dornei and Sinaia, and others (Cavnic, Borsa, Straja, Parang) have improved the snow layer due to the heavy snowfall from the last days. The biggest problems were caused by the strong winds that managed to stop the lifts in Sinaia.

'Till now we know for sure that new floodlit systems are up & ready in Cavnic on La Icoana slope and in Muntele Mic resort. Also, for this season there will be some new slopes, 3 in Cavnic, one of them being for advance skiers and one in Suior, parallel with the existing one. If you want to go to Izvoare or Muntele Mic resorts you'll have to know that the access roads to these resorts have been repaired.
Part of our team had spent their new year holiday at Straja and we decided to write a report of what we've got there. As the days between 31.12.2003 - 03.01.2004 were very snowy the slopes become really good from day to day, only the "Subteleferic" slope was closed because the lack of the snow. Almost all the cable lifts were open between 9-16 (the chair-lift), 9-17 ski-lift I and II (ski-lift II was closed when the upper slopes were too foggy), 9-21 (or 'till the last skier stays on the slopes) ski-lift III, 9-23 (or 'till the last skier stays on the slopes) Platoul Soarelui ski-lift, ski-lift IV was closed. For all the ski-lifts the price for one uphill ride is 15.000 lei but the ski-passes are still missing, one uphill or downhill ride with the chair-lift costs 25.000 lei, and a full tour costs 35.000 lei. The floodlit is available on the Platoul Soarelui slope and on the slope near ski-lift III, so the skiers can stay late in the night on these slopes.

You can access the resort by the chair-lift from Lupeni or by car on the forest-road that links the resort and the Lupeni town (7 km), we recommend to use anti-skid chains because the road it's covered with snow.

For accommodation you have to pay between 100.000 - 250.000 lei for a night. You can meal at Straja, Platoul Soarelui and Montana chalet, or to any other chalet that has a restaurant. If you want to take just a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate you have to pay 15.000 lei.

Note: 1 € = 41.250 lei
