			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jumping jacks&#8230;piece of cake! Push-ups and sit-ups&#8230;no problem! Squats&#8230;do I have to? Why do many people hate doing this exercise so much and always try to avoid it? Because doing more than one squat can get exhausting! Not to mention the burning sensation in your legs. But there are so many benefits to doing squats, whether you are using your own body weight or using dumbbells for extra weight. Squats are one of the best exercises to gain muscle. First of all, you are working so many muscles in your body. Not only will your legs get a work out but you will also be working out your core muscles such as your lower back, abs and obliques. Because squats help you build muscle in the largest parts of your body, testosterone and human growth hormones are released in your system which helps your build muscles all over your body. If you&#8217;re an athlete, count on squats to help you gain lower body strength, endurance, agility and balance. How can squats help with balance, you ask? Well, squats require proper form and this can require some concentration. As we age, we may lose balance, mobility as well as posture. Squats can help you maintain all 3! With the leg strength you&#8217;ve gain from doing squats, you&#8217;ll still be running into old age!</p>
<p>It is important to tell you all how to perform the basic squat correctly. Have your feet a little more than shoulder-width apart. Be sure to keep your back straight and head up, especially if you are using weights such as dumbbells or a barbell. Arching your back may cause serious injury. Keeping your head up can help you with your posture as you perform the squats. As you are at the top of movement, have your knees bent slightly to keep tension on your muscles rather than weight on your bones. As you lower yourself to a squat, lead with your hips and as you go back up push your heels to the floor while pushing your hips forwards to straighten back to top of the movement.</p>
<p>Who knew that one exercise can work out so many parts of your body? So, don&#8217;t skip the squats! Do them and be sure to challenge yourself everyday!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many of us have heard the term, &#8220;emotional eating,&#8221; but if you haven&#8217;t let me define it for you. It is when you turn to food every time you feel any emotions such as sadness, happiness, boredom, anxiety, etc. This is a common reason why many people have a hard time losing weight and some may not even realize they&#8217;re doing it. Though that delicious box of chocolate or super-size french fries may soothe you for the moment, you&#8217;ll beat yourself up later on because bingeing can actually make you feel worse than before. The problem is we always turn to junk food but I guess we can blame biology. The carbohydrates high in sugar or fat release a brain stimulating pleasure chemical called dopamine which is linked to euphoria so you&#8217;ll continue eating to experience that pleasure over and over again. Oftentimes, we go for the foods that we associate with memorable moments in our lives or great memories. But this doesn&#8217;t mean that you can&#8217;t have the body you want. There are many ways you can stop this habit.</p>
<p>Before you pick up that cupcake, STOP! Consider the consequences and remember how uncomfortable and bad you felt after you binged on junk food after emotional eating. Really consider if that box of cupcakes is worth feeling awful about later on. Try having a visual reminder why you shouldn&#8217;t eat such as those new SKINNY JEANS or the invitation to your high school reunion or even a picture of yourself that you don&#8217;t like. Give it some though. Need another strategy? Try this. Think about how hungry you really are. This is a way to figure out if you are eating because you are truly hungry or if you are eating for emotional reasons. Rate your hunger level from 1 (stuffed!) to 8 (starving!). Maybe you need to give it some time. If you are still hungry after 30 minutes has passed, then make the smart eating decision. Snack on the better alternative. Instead of eating the cupcake, reach for fruit parfait with fresh, sweet fruit and Greek yogurt. Also, you can stabilize your mood and lessen the cravings by eating meals that have high quality carbs, such as wholes grains and fruit, and healthy fats, such as nuts, eggs, olive oil, and fish. Another way is to talk to a friend or go hang out with your family. Our lives are so crazy and hectic that sometimes we tend to forget about the people we love. When you have a great support system, you don&#8217;t need to turn to food for a pick-me-up. Go hang out with your friends, take your mom and dad out to lunch, do a little catching up with your siblings!</p>
<p>You can do it! But don&#8217;t be too hard on yourself. If you slip-up once, don&#8217;t beat yourself up because then you&#8217;ll just continue to binge and you&#8217;ll just keep feeling worse. Don&#8217;t let that be an excuse to pig out on all the junk food you want. It&#8217;s one big cycle and it&#8217;s time for you to break that cycle!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To all my Jewish friends and followers&#8230;I want to wish you all a happy and sweet new year! This is a time to look forward to the future and start on a clean slate! Have you neglected your workout routine? Haven&#8217;t been eating so healthy lately? How about you start now?!? Throw out the junk food from your cupboards and fridge and fill them up with fresh and healthy food! Let&#8217;s clean and rid your kitchen from all the fatty food temptations. Find what will motivate you to workout, even if they are short term goals because short term goals may lead to long term ones! Even if it means that you have to put up an old picture of yourself, clothes you would like to fit into (again) or a mantra that will help you get through your workout routine. Find something that will motivate you! Not only will you ADD longevity to your life but your stress level WILL be low, you WILL have more energy and you WILL feel good about yourself. This, I guarantee you. So instead of eating those fried potatoe chips, grab some sweet fruit or some almonds. Go out for a walk instead of sitting down and watching TV all day. Join a fitness group for support and motivation. No more excuses! Let&#8217;s change those bad habits and start the new year off right!</p>

<p>Modified Version (Desk Climbers): Place hands firmly on the edge of your desk. Take a few small steps back until you are leaning slightly on the desk. Lift your right leg up towards your chest and jump as you switch legs. Do this 30 times for both legs. Remember to keep your back straight and core tight the whole time!</p>
<p>Challenge Yourself with Mountain Climbers: Start off in a push up position and bring your right leg up towards your chest. Jump as you put your right leg back and bring your left leg towards your chest. Remember to keep your back straight and core tight! Do this 30 times for both legs.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you obsessed with eating ONLY healthy food? Does your diet have an negative affect on your social life? Do you feel extreme guilt after a little bite of cake? If so, you might have Orthorexia Nervosa. I&#8217;m sure you all know about the 3 major eating disorders &#8211; Anorexia nervosa (not eating at all), Bulimia nervosa (binge eating and purging) and Binge eating (overeating). We&#8217;ve all heard about the experiences of people who have or had at least one of these disorders, and the media has helped bring to our attention the severity and dangers associated with them. But not very many people have heard of Orthorexia. This is a term created by Dr. Steven Bratman to describe this unhealthy fixation with having an EXTREMELY strict diet after his own experience with Orthorexia. Now, you may be thinking &#8220;What&#8217;s wrong with having a strict diet? Isn&#8217;t that supposed to be a good thing?&#8221; Well&#8230;Dr. Karin Kratina wrote an article, <em>Orthorexia Nervosa,</em> for the National Eating Disorders Association<em></em> that states, &#8220;Eventually food choices become so restrictive, with both variety and calories, that health suffers &#8212; an ironic twist for a person so completely dedicated to healthy eating. Eventually, the obsession with healthy eating can crowd out other activities and interests, impair relationships, and become physically dangerous.&#8221; This is not to say that eating a healthy diet is wrong. Please do continue to eat healthy! But do not obsess over what you eat or fast after consuming a slice of pie. It is okay to indulge every once in awhile because the more you deprive yourself from what you crave, the more you will want it later on. Too much of anything is not good. Balance is key.</p>
<p>Kratina (2006) also suggests to consider the following questions to determine if you are dealing with orthorexia:</p>
<ul>
<li>Do you wish that occasionally you could just eat and not worry about foot quality?</li>
<li>Do you ever wish you could spend less time on food and  more time on living and loving?</li>
<li>Does it sound beyond your ability to eat a meal prepared with love by someone else &#8212; one single meal &#8212; and not try to control what is served?</li>
<li>Are you constantly looking for the ways foods are unhealthy for you?</li>
<li>Do love, joy, play and creativity take a backseat to having a perfect diet?</li>
<li>Do you feel guilt or self-loathing when you stray from your diet?</li>
<li>Do you feel in control when you eat the correct diet?</li>
<li>Have you positioned yourself on a nutritional pedestal and wonder how others can possibly eat the food they eat?</li>
</ul>
<p>Determining whether one has orthorexia may be very difficult because we are taught and encouraged to eat healthy. Furthermore, anyone with any kind of eating disorder may not recognize that they have a problem. This will make receiving treatment difficult. But if you or someone you know may have orthorexia or any eating disorder, please encourage them to seek treatment for their physical, emotional and mental well-being.</p>

<p><strong>1. Core lift &amp; lunge with glute squeeze</strong></p>
<p>[a] Pick up your dumbbells for balance. [b] Lift your left leg up to a 90 degree angle and hold. [c] Bring the left leg back and lunge. [d] Bring yourself up and lightly kick your left leg back. [e] Do the move 15 times on each leg. *Remember to keep your spine straight and core engaged.</p>
<p><strong>2. Balance Deadlift</strong></p>
<p>[a] Find your balance by finding something to focus on. Beginners can hold onto a sturdy chair. [b] With spine straight, bend downwards holding your dumbbells in front of you while slowly lifting your left leg back. [c] Repeat 15 times on each leg. *Only bend forward as far as you can. Do not bend over too far to the point that you lose your balance.</p>
<p><strong>3. Plank side lunge (dumbbells are not needed for this exercise)</strong></p>
<p>[a] Get down on plank position. [b] Step out to the side with your left leg, shifting your weight onto that leg. [c] Bring the left leg back into the plank position. [d] Repeat with the right leg. [e] Do 15 times on each leg.</p>
<p><strong>4. Shoulder glute bridge with leg lift (dumbbells are not needed for this exercise)</strong></p>
<p>[a] Lie on your back and lift your buns up to a bridge position. [b] Bring your left leg upward, keeping your body in a bridge position (For beginners, have your left leg slightly bent. Challenge yourself with by trying to keep your left leg straight)<strong>. </strong>[c] With your left leg still up, use your buns to pulse up and down. [d] Pulse 15 times and repeat on right leg.</p>
<p><strong>5. Side lying leg lift (dumbbells are not needed for this exercise)</strong></p>
<p>[a] Lay down on your left side with your left hand supporting your head and your right hand in front of you for balance. [b] Bend your left leg and keep your right leg straight out with your feet flexed. [c] Pulse your right leg up and down. [d] Do 15 times and repeat on other leg.<strong><br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s finally here, your 5 MINUTE OFFICE WORKOUT! If you have time to squeeze this in once or twice during your work day you can squeeze into that swimsuit this weekend and be firmer and trimmer!  With minimal equipment, let Charm and I show you how it&#8217;s done.  Follow Charm for an advanced workout, and follow me for the basic workout.  Keep this up and the talk at the water cooler will be about your titillating triceps and scandalous six pack!</p>
<p><strong>How It Works: </strong>Do 1 set of each move then repeat the series 2-3 times. Try to complete this circuit 3 times a week. Feel free to print out this workout or replay the YouTube video at the link below.</p>

<p><strong>You&#8217;ll Need: </strong>Dumbbells (you may substitute with water bottles or canned goods) and plenty of space to workout. A mat is optional.<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>1. Desk/Mountain Climbers (works out your legs, shoulders and chest)</strong></p>
<p>. Lift your right leg up towards chest and [B]. jump as you switch legs. Do this 30 times for both legs. Remember to keep back straight and core tight the whole time&#8221;]<a href="http://skinnyjeansworkout.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/office-workout-stills-desk-climbers-front6.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-168" title="office workout stills desk climbers front" src="http://skinnyjeansworkout.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/office-workout-stills-desk-climbers-front6.jpg?w=300&#038;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a>Challenge Yourself with Mountain Climbers: Start off in a push up position with your back straight and hips low. [A]. Bring right leg up towards your chest. [B]. Jump as you put your right leg back and bring your left leg towards your chest. Remember to keep your back straight and core tight! Do this 30 times for both legs.</p>

<p><strong>2. Split Squat Curl and Press (works out butt, thighs, shoulders and arms)</strong></p>
<p>. As you straighten your legs to get out of the lunge, bring your dumbbells towards your shoulders with palms facing inward and [C]. extend your arms towards the ceiling making sure your palms face front. Do 15 lunges on each leg and 30 bicep curls and shoulder press with each lunge. Make sure that your knee does NOT go past your ankle as you do your lunges.&#8221;]<a href="http://skinnyjeansworkout.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/office-workout-stills-lunges-angle2.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-170" title="office workout stills lunges angle" src="http://skinnyjeansworkout.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/office-workout-stills-lunges-angle2.jpg?w=300&#038;h=223" alt="" width="300" height="223" /></a>Challenge Yourself with Walking Lunges: Start off with feet together and dumbbells at your side. [A]. Lunge forward with your right leg as both knees remain at 90 degrees. [B]. Bring the left leg forward so that both legs are straight. [C]. Bring your dumbbells towards your shoulders with palms facing inward. [D]. Rotate your wrist to have palms face outward and extend arms up towards the ceiling. [E].Bring your arms down to be at starting position and lunge forward with your left leg. Do 15 lunges on each leg and 30 bicep curls and shoulder press with each lunge.</p>

<p><strong>3. Bench Dips (works out tricep muscles)</strong></p>

Place your HEELS (not the your whole foot) on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Bend your elbows at about 45 degrees and lift yourself up. Remember to keep your back straight. Do 30 reps.</p></div>
<p>Challenge Yourself with Bench Dips on Chair: Make sure chair is steady and won&#8217;t move around (safety first!). Place palms down on chair with your arms and back straight. Have knees bent at 90 degrees with feet flat on the floor. Bend your elbows at about 45 degrees and lift yourself up. Do 30 reps.</p>

<p><strong>4. Plie squat with front raise (works out quadriceps, butt, inner thighs and shoulders</strong></p>
<p>. Without tucking your tailbone or arching your back, lower hips as far as possible in a plie while raising your dumbbells out in front of you with your arms straight and palms down. [B]. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Do you remember when your parents always made you eat breakfast when you were young? Even if you weren&#8217;t hungry, they would make you eat a few bites of toast or finish your glass of milk or orange juice. They knew what they were doing. Everyone has heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it&#8217;s true. It is. As you sleep, your body&#8217;s digestion slows down and, in a way, your body is fasting. So, breakfast is a way to break the fast. By eating breakfast, you not only get all the nutrients you need to start your day but you also jump-start your metabolism. Your body goes into &#8220;starvation mode&#8221; when breakfast is skipped. This is where it stores up fat because it is not getting enough nutrients it needs to function and to give your body energy. Thus, decreasing your metabolic rate and leading you to binge eat later on during the day or in the evening when your body&#8217;s digestive system is slowing down. Not good. If you want to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, you must eat breakfast. Oatmeal with honey, high-fiber cereal, or eggs are great breakfast options. In a hurry? Grab some fruit (fresh or frozen), yogurt, or walnuts to eat on the go (Once you&#8217;re at your destination, of course. We don&#8217;t want you to be distracted while you&#8217;re driving). Many markets are selling the pre-packaged fruits and vegetables so it&#8217;s easy for you to just grab and go. Make a fruit smoothie the night before so that you can take that with you to work or school. So, don&#8217;t neglect breakfast time. You&#8217;ll function better throughout the day and you&#8217;ll be able to control your food intake too! Eat up!</p>
