“Cardio, Core & More” class

50 mins//144 bpm

Ran easy -

6.1 miles/52 mins

I got all crafty the other night when I was giving myself tats…

{Instagram}

And I decided to make some thank you cards. If you want to make your own superfab card, here’s how probably not to do it:

1. Buy some greeting cards and envelopes. I chose brown instead of white because that’s what the hipsters told me to do. I bought everything from Hobby Lobby (they always have a 40% off one item coupon online) but you can probably get this stuff anywhere. Or just take a piece of paper, fold it in half and call it good.

2. Buy stamps, ink and embossing powder. If you don’t want to make a thank you card, you can buy pretty much any stamp or even have one custom made. Hey, someone out there needs a card that says, “I love you, but dang, yo farts stank!”

3. Stick your stamp in the ink and then on the card. No picture because if you can’t follow that, lose $200 and don’t pass GO.

4. As soon as you put the stamp the card, immediately cover it with embossing powder before the ink dries. You can get the powder in a ton of colors including clear so the ink pad color shows up. I just did pink on pink because I figured the chance of screwing up would be lessened.

5. Get fancy and use a funnel or just pour the excess back into the bottle. The powder isn’t expensive but there’s no reason for wasting it either.

6. Use an embossing heat tool for about 15 seconds to seal the powder; it kinda looks like a shiny rubber when it’s done.

By the way, a blow dryer will not work, I tried. It doesn’t get hot enough and just blows all the powder away. <-Lindsey Lohan’s greatest fear.

7. You are finished. Ring up Martha Stewart on the telly and tell her, In yo face!

A little tiny card I first made and ended up with a Congratulations mountain. hmmmm.

8. Clean your stamps off in water so you can re-use them again with different colors… or just wipe them off on your arm.

If you’re like, What the heck is that crap besides a giant waste of money?!, here’s what an embossed card should look like:

And yes, it’s from Martha Steward where you can find better directions on how to emboss cards and gift tags. I lose, Martha, I lose.

Last week I told you about going to Milwaukee for the release of the new Koss Fit Series headphones that are designed for women by women. One of those women being the Dara Torres…

The Fit Series features two models: the FitClips and the FitBuds. Both are made with a sweat resistant coating, are pliable and soft, come with 3 sizes of ear cushions for the right fit, and are super lightweight. Both retail for $29.99 and come in five different colors.

The FitBuds are the smallest earbud Koss has ever created, only 6 mm in diameter which is 33% smaller than the average bud.

All the colors are fun (my fav is the mint) and I kinda dig that they didn’t use pink as one of the colors. I bet Dara had a hand in that one.

Since receiving them I’ve been trying both out running in Phoenix in 80* weather, in the gym doing cardio, and going for walks with my dog. No complaints here: they’ve worked great so far, no getting sweaty and falling out or doing that weird muted sound thing.

Two reasons why I like Koss Fit Series Headphones:

1. The small company was started 60+ years ago with a mission to make great quality sound products, not cool headphones made popular by big time rap moguls and every popstar in Hollywood endorsing them. You know what I’m talking about.

2. Both headphones have a lifetime warranty. They break, stop working, fall apart, send ‘em back and get a new pair. If you’re an athlete, it’s not enough to have a really nice sounding pair of headphones; they also have to be functional and take some abuse. That’s what these were created for and if something does happen, no worries because you’re not out your $30. You can’t lose.

If I had to choose, I would probably get the mint FitBuds for myself, but you can buy any of the FitSeries at Koss.com (use the code Fit4Life for $5 off) or Walmart.

Or win one of the ten pairs I have to give away (check out Tina’s blog for a chance to win too):

Everyone loves these babies because we’ve all had terrible race photos taken of us.

Today I thought I’d include one of my own from the OC Marathon that I’ve entitled simply, “Nostrils.”

Some other beauties:

Lina:

I love the Reader Roundup posts you do of bad race pics. Well, I just ran my very first marathon and already I feel like a contender! In the bad race pics series, I mean.

Here, for example, my face looks like it has died and is in the process of decomposition.

A few weeks ago I ran a half marathon on a beautiful course along the beach in Gloucester, MA. I wish I could say this photo was at the top of a grueling hill (there were many) or 12 miles down with just 1 to go. Unfortunately, it was taken very early on in the race after just three miles of flat stretches and downhills. Oh well, I guess you can’t win them all….

Hope you’re able to get a laugh out of it. My family and friends (and myself obviously) sure did!

So I got a PR this weekend at a local Run for Boston 5K, whoop whoop! It was an evening race and I do all my runs in the morning. It was also 80 degrees and muggy, so not fun. Anyways, I thought you would get a kick out of these really awful race pics! I know I am.

And throwing an internal fit that the yogurt girl had to make the sample cups for me. You know I can’t sample 15 flavors without being embarrassed if you’re doing it for me!?!

Besides raging and yogurting, we did a little bit of shopping. My mom recently bought some new indoor and outdoor furniture, including this circular patio couch that Marni laid claim to, and she was looking for a few extra accessories to finish the living room.

She wanted a big floor light to fill a corner so we went to a bunch of furniture stores and looked online before finally deciding on this light from Ethan Allen. We went to the store twice and it was on a smoking floor sale so we decided to give it a new home.

We were also on the hunt for a contemporary side table and checked out these two before finding one on sale at Pier 1.

Eventually the man and I had to say our goodbyes and hit the road home. It’s about a 6 hour drive give or take, depending on whether we use the Nos turbo boosters, so we fueled up with some healthy road trip food:

Followed by a lovely light and refreshing dessert of Evil Twins and Gummi Rocks:

The twins aren’t that great or that evil, but the Rocks will rock your socks off. Like you didn’t see that coming.

Shortly after we got our Subway, traffic on the I-10W came to a complete stop and wasn’t moving at all. People were getting out of their cars and walking around. We were close enough to see that a semi coming eastbound (the other way) hit something, went across the dirt wash area and hit another semi on our side of the freeway blocking all the lanes.

So both sides of the freeway were shut down. Thankfully we were able to back up, maneuver around the semis around us, go through the wash and flip a U-turn and head eastbound. From there we got on some small back roads that eventually led us back to the 10 past the crash. It took us about an hour but it could have been worse.

While we were sitting there waiting trying to figure out what to do, I was sorta complaining/mumbling that if we hadn’t stopped for lunch we would have passed the whole thing because we were pretty close to the front, and the husband was like, “Or we could have been in a big wreck and not survived.” Touché, my man.

WORKOUT -

Xtend barre class -

55 mins

Elliptical -

60 mins

We got home last night from Phoenix and I didn’t really want to get up at 5am to go to a barre class, but my favorite teacher was there and I hadn’t been to a class in over a month so I sucked it up and went.

If you need some kick in the pants motivation, do a different or new workout today. Get uncomfortable. Riding a PR high? Go get your rear handed to you in a yoga class. Heavy weights lifting master? Go flail through a fast-paced Zumba workout.

When you get out of your normal routine, you can bust through the doldrums and boredom. Plus it’s humbling to suck at something… like the lady next to you looks like she’s not even working while your thighs and calves are spastically shaking so bad they’re moving the entire barre. not that happened to me today or anything.

MAIL CALL

Since I’ve been out of town a lot lately, my mail’s been stacking up and I finally went through it and found a bunch of fun stuff. I swear my husband hides all the cool mail and leaves me with the HOA bill. awesome.

Some stuff I’ve received in the past week:

Not sure who sent this Magic Bullet to me?! I think it’s from the LA Marathon because NutriBullet was a sponsor but I really don’t know. Anyone have any suggestions on what to use it for? Smoothies, hummus, pureeing my spice drops?

Unfortunately she forgot to send the chef to go with it, but I improvised and seasoned sweet potato wedges with it last night.

Lauren asked,

Since I had my daughter last June, my appetite and taste for things have completely changed, and now Shot Bloks and gels make me gag. Can’t even look at them. I’m running back-to-back marathons this fall, and am not sure what else I can use to fuel that will be easy to carry with me on the race?

Great question Lauren, because I know a lot of people can’t stand the texture or taste of gels.

In “serious” marathons I do gels – one at mile 8.5, 13.5, 18 and 22 for a total of 4. You can read more about my fueling routine and tips here, but I take gels because they’re easy to get down and digest (no chewing) and when I take them at the same intervals, I don’t even have to think about it. It’s a no brainer and I don’t worry about getting enough calories. <-And in life that is never a concern.

But if you can’t stand the taste of gels, try sports chews like Clif ShotBloks or Powerbar Blasts. Obviously this isn’t going to work for you Lauren, since you said Shotblocks are gag-inducing… kinda like my jokes.

I like the berry flavors and the tropical punch; certain flavors have caffeine or added sodium and they all have carbs and electrolytes for energy. I take 3 at a time (100 calories worth) and cut a pack into two before a run to make it easier to grab.

If you have trouble swallowing while running, take a knife and cut each block in half and put them in a sandwich baggie.

I also like really Powerbar Gel Blasts because they have a gel-filled center and the Cola flavor makes me think I’m sipping a Diet Coke. Not really but I do love me a glass of fine DC.

A pouch has 6-7 blasts and 200 calories from their “optimized carb blend” of fructose and glucose. The Cola flavor has added caffeine but other flavors don’t.

A tip: if you’re running in cold weather, any sort of chomp/bite/block is going to harden a little and be harder to chew so you might have to suck on it, swallow it whole or take something softer like a gel.

So if you want to go the traditional “sports nutrition” route, I would encourage you to try multiple brands of gels and bites out: you might find that while you can’t stand gels, you might like a chewier chomp from a specific company.

For example, I eat mostly GU gels and Espresso Love is my favorite, but I can’t stand Powerbar gels: they’re too runny and watery to me.

Maybe try Honey Stinger waffles; I never have but have heard great things about them. Or try Hammer gels – the apple cinnamon one is crazy tasty, or as tasty as liquified sugar in a pouch can be.

You might just need to try a different brand, flavor or product to find something you can tolerate.

Now if you’re still like, “Barf no, that ain’t happening”, then it’s time to start looking at regular foods for fuel. My favorite: CANDY.

My opinion is that unless you’re a semi or elite athlete, you just need to get carbs (calories) in regardless of whether they come from candy sugar or fructose. It’s better to run on calories from Coca Cola than to run completely depleted because you can’t stand another gosh dang gel.

Swedish Fish are probably my favorite race candy, but I also like cinnamon bears… gummi bears… Alaskan Grizzly bears. I portion them out in a little baggie beforehand so I have a good idea of how many to eat at what mile markers. The other option is to sit at the start line, eat all your candy and cry.

Other things besides candy to try:

*Jelly Beans (my brain’s still on candy) are an easy-to-eat source of carbs or you can buy Sports Beans. The nice thing about candy is that it’s really affordable and you can figure out what/how much you want to take when.

*Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches cut into fourths and wrapped up in little baggies. You might want to go with white bread or lower fiber bread and cut the crusts off.

*Honey packets – honey is a great all natural, cheap source of fuel. Runner’s World has an article on its’ benefits.

*Dried fruit like little boxes of raisins or other fruits are high in sugar and easy to get in calories without eating an entire watermelon. Maybe try chocolate covered or yogurt covered raisins if you wanna get wild and cray.

*Fig Newtons or soft breakfast bars like Nutri Grain bars

*Snickers… deliciousness in bar form! Cut one in thirds or halves.

*Plain granola bars

*Gatorade, Nuun, sports drinks with electrolytes and calories

A couple important things:

*Stay away from anything high fat or high fiber – neither is going to sit well on your stomach unless you want a blowout and I ain’t talking tires.

*TRY IT BEFORE YOUR RACE. This is really important that you play around and try different things in training so that when your races comes, you’re not going to be play Diarrhea Roulette or starve to death out on the course. Even if you have to fuel for a marathon on a 10 mile run, at least you will gain knowledge from it.

*Read labels especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Don’t want to take in caffeine? Then make sure that sports chomp doesn’t have added caffeine. Brown rice syrup make you vom-face? A lot of the organic or natural gels have it in them so check it out.

*Last thing: HYDRATE. So so so important but you already know that. You know that your performance suffers by even a small amount (2%) of dehydration. Practice drinking during your runs with both water and a sports drink.

What do you fuel with during a marathon or longer run?

Any other foods to add to the list for someone doesn’t like gels or chomps?

Ran outside in Phoenix -

8.0 miles/1:08

This weekend was the first in 5 weeks that I didn’t run a marathon or a relay.

It was nice to chill but I’m ready for next weekend with friends: the Surfer’s Path Marathon in Santa Cruz. I’m already dreaming of my friend’s grandma’s homemade thin crust pizza and how much I’m going to eat. It’s going to be embarrassing.

And then after that is this, another new-to-me race:

On May 27th I’m running the Laguna Hills Memorial Day Half Marathon. I’m all about running new races and I’ve never done this one even though it’s practically in my backyard. (If my backyard wasn’t the size of a postcard.) I’ve heard that it’s a great family event and I love that they support the local Marines.

Monica is also running it; come run with us!!

MILWAUKEE

I blabbed about my run along the waterfront in Milwaukee and then I tried to be super cool when meeting Dara Torres. Here’s a few more photos from my quick trip to Wisconsin:

{Facebook pic: I stayed at the historic Pfister Hotel downtown. It was very elegant and regal and I felt like a knight when looking in the shield mirror.}

After meeting Dara, Tina and I took a tour of the Koss headquarters. We were able to see the world’s first stereophone as well as a few others. These Porta Pro headphones came out in 1984 and they’re still a huge hit in Europe!?! Move over, Beats by Dre.

Tina and I also tried on a pair of $1000 headphones that are used for things like sound editing or just being a baller.

I did not want to try these on… my phone screen has so many cracks it looks like Spiderman got in a fight with it so I really didn’t want my Butterfingers to be touching the most valuable thing I’ve ever seen. But Drake assured me it was fine and they’d look swell on me.

{Tina’s pic}

Liar.

We were also able to see some of the machinery that is used to make various products – it is all super old school. One piece was from the 1940’s and was this delicate color of pea/puke green, a color I remember my grandma being quite fond of. Who said carpet needs to be neutral?

I had no clue but Koss has over 100 products on the market including headphones that range from $4.99 to $1000. Pretty sure my sister-in-law and brother need these camouflage ones…

One long wall in the building is painted in a cheeky mural and I thought this was funny, Mona Lisa’s smiling because she’s bumping the beats:

After our tour, we stopped at Alterra which many of you recommended. The coffee was good, but the building itself, décor, branding and atmosphere was even more rad. It was a beautiful day and the place was crazy busy; I think half the city was getting their caffeine on.

{Tina’s pic, I’m pretty sure I don’t even own a camera at this point}

We road tripped out to Arizona for a few days because we don’t get enough sun in SoCal and my goal’s to look like a piece of burnt toast by the end of May.

So while I’m off crisping myself, enjoy this guest post from my PR bustin’ friend:

Hello! This is Monica from Run Eat Repeat. SR is hanging out with her fam out of state (read: getting a secret nose job) and asked me to write a post for her.

I am a very busy girl, but I figured I owed her one for that time I insisted she be my friend even though I was wearing my dad’s old shirt…

Since she refuses to listen to music while running until mile 26,000, I thought I’d share my top 5 favorite running songs right now. See, I’m Mexican and I love salsa.

And salsa dancing.

And doing embarrassing things while dancing.

Yesterday I was in Milwaukee with Fitfluential for the launch of Koss’ new Fit Series headphones designed with Dara Torres.

{Tina’s picture}

Honestly, I had never even heard of Koss before, doesn’t it kinda sound like an energy drink?! But Koss created the world’s first stereophone in 1958 (check it out on Instagram). John C. Koss started the small Milwaukee-based company (there’s only about 55-60 employees) and now his two sons run it with him. I love supporting small businesses and I have a special place in my heart for family run ones as well.

John was hilarious; (I feel like I need to call him Mr. Koss out of respect) he’s 83 years old young and was joking around with all of us, talking about blogging and pulling out his iphone. It was obvious the sense of pride he had when mentioning his sons, family and great-grandkids. I told him he was blessed and he told me my family was blessed to have such an awesome daughter. <- I made that last part up.

Koss’ slogan is Fit For Life and between Mr. Koss, who works out 3-4 times a week, and Dara Torres, who is 46 and in amazing shape, I think they got it covered.

The Fit Series is the first headphone designed for women by women. We were able to meet the designer yesterday too; she worked closely with Dara creating a FitBud that’s only 6 millimeters in diameter and 33% smaller for women’s smaller ears.

So there’s the FitBud that goes in your ear and the FitClip that goes around your ear.

I’m always intrigued by business, entrepreneurialism, etc and I thought it was interesting to hear how they married Koss’s background in high-fidelity sound quality and Dara’s fitness side where the headphone has to be sweat-resistant, comfortable, pliable, basically super functional.

After learning about the headphones, we took a 45 minute spin class with Dara and tried them out. I haven’t taken a spin class since before I got married, like a 1000 years ago, but I always think it looks like fun.

I want need to go cash in my treasury bonds from Grandma and buy an unlimited membership to SoulCycle right this second. I loved it, it was a lot of sweaty fun cardio. I was peeking around to make sure everyone else was dripping sweat like I was and that I wasn’t some sort of spinning freak. It’s a great low-impact workout and you get out of it what you put into it. <- Chinese Proverb right there, quote me on it.

Oh, and let’s not forget DARA TORRES TOUCHED MY EAR. I like to think she was whispering sweet nothings in it, but I’m pretty sure she was just putting my FitClip in.

Dara said that right now she’s taking a break from swimming and so spinning is her go-to workout (go check out her abs while spinning) She even has two spin bikes in her home workout room or her “woman’s cave” as she calls it.

After the workout us bloggers got to chat with Dara for about 15 minutes about anything and everything. Loved how open and frank she was, and of course I had to ask about drug testing and steroid use. A few things I remember off the top of my head that we spoke about:

*When training for the Olympics, Dara was very proactive with drug testing, asking to be tested whenever where ever and that was key – to proactively clear your name (by testing). And because of that, she was extremely cautious about what she put in her body; even a simple vitamin would need to get checked out first.

*Asked about the five Olympics she was in, Dara said that she appreciated the recent games more since she was older. At 17 it was all fun and games, but later in life she had such gratitude that she was even there and would take time to thank the officials, fans, etc. I want to have this attitude in my running: appreciative that I get to do it.

*She’s like any mom and sometimes gives her daughter the ipad when she needs a few moments of silence, but afterschool activities are really important to build self-confidence, self-esteem and to move and play. And yes, her daughter swims

*Dara said that anyone can fit in a few minutes of activity, like doing dips on a step, taking your kids to the park, or doing bicep curls with soup cans; it doesn’t always have to be 45 minutes at the gym.

*Getting older and avoiding weight gain is all about moderation and portion control. Dara had an eating disorder when she was younger so banning any foods doesn’t work for her. She has a bite of chocolate cake, not the whole thing. Hmmmm I’m still learning how to have a “bite of dessert”…

*When asked how to keep your locks in shape with all the chlorine, Dara said to put conditioner on before you put your swim cap and if that doesn’t work, chop it off.

*Dara’s taking a break from swimming (she said swimmers are very all or nothing and right now she doesn’t want to be near a pool) but works out 5-6 days a week in her home gym in Massachusetts.

Besides winning 12 Olympic medals (she joked that they were in her bag), Dara’s also written a couple of New York Times best-selling books and was named one of the “Top Female Athletes of the Decade” by Sports Illustrated. No big deal, just another day at the office. In other news, I made a cup of coffee and read celebrity gossip.

I definitely want to do some serious sweat-facing in both the FitBuds and FitClips before I review them, but I’ll let y’all know what I think of them and if they garner me a gold medal or six-pack Dara-esque abs. fingers crossed.

If you want to get a pair, the code Fit4Life is good for $5 off and free shipping at Koss.com and you can also find them at Walmart. Both pairs retail for $29.99.
