How often a person needs an eye exam depends on a number of factors including age, overall health and whether or not eye disorders run in the family.</p>
<p>Children with no eye trouble need only have their eyes checked during routine visits to their pediatrician. <p>Ophthalmologists are qualified to perform eye surgery and they also know how to take proper eye measurements so they can accurately prescribe corrective lenses. Their training helps them dispense advice for preventing blindness and also enables them to assist those who are blind. In addition to advanced educational training, Ophthalmologists must be trained in clinical and surgical settings.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">As the name implies, Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is an eye disease that is primarily triggered by age. There are two types of ARMD, wet and dry. Either can affect one or both eyes. The dry form is more prevalent, occurring in 90% of the cases. It&#8217;s slow to develop and vision loss is gradual, although not necessarily severe. The wet form is much more damaging, causing rapid and severe vision loss. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Even though vision loss is not complete, it is significant enough for an individual to be considered legally blind and for quality of life to be severely affected. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Vision loss is not total because ARMD affects the central vision, not the peripheral vision. When the macula is damaged, a person cannot create a clearly detailed image. Since the macula is in the center of the retina, central vision is affected. The macula is a group of nerve cells that utilize light to create and send images to the retina.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Symptoms of ARMD</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Those affected by ARMD will notice a spot in their vision that is clearly indistinguishable. For example, when looking directly at an image of a person, legs and head will be clearly visible, but the body itself, the part right in the center of vision, will appear to be covered with an area that appears either empty or dark. Besides blurred vision, straight lines may seem wavy and a person may not be able to recognize images that should be familiar. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Who is at risk?</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Age is a primary risk factor of ARMD, with the majority of the cases developing in individuals aged 60 and over. However, hereditary and the environment can also trigger the onset of the dry form of this eye disease. Females develop ARMD more often than men. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Free radicals cause much of the cell damage that occurs inside the retina therefore cigarette smoking and hypertension increase the risks of developing ARMD. Those who do not eat a nutritionally-balanced diet may also be at risk as they are not providing the body with the antioxidant protection it needs to inhibit the damage caused by free radicals. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">It&#8217;s difficult to detect ARMD. The dry form is slow to develop, and generally develops only in one eye. The unaffected eye compensates for the damaged eye, so symptoms are not readily noticeable. </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">Yellow deposits called drusen on the retina can usually be observed during an eye exam. The eye chart and dilating the pupils are two methods of detection. When wet ARMD is suspected, the eye doctor will use an Amsler grid or fluorescein angiography. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US"> </span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Whether you have a spouse, a domestic partner or just someone who is the current live-in love of your life, living with someone close can cause stress. Note, the &#8216;can&#8217; not &#8216;must&#8217;. Interacting with someone with whom you have that kind of relationship introduces a variety of potential problems, but those don&#8217;t have to lead to stress &#8211; for either party.</p>
<p>Stress results when someone feels caught in a perceived, unresolvable conflict between &#8220;I must&#8221; and &#8220;I can&#8217;t&#8221;. They feel there is something they have to do, but are blocked from or don&#8217;t have the resources to do. </p>
<p>Close relationships, such as those with a spouse or &#8216;significant other&#8217; inevitably bring many such problems. Individuals have unique values and interests, preferred lifestyles and even basic differences in pace or approach. Some men are very stoic, even when they&#8217;re not repressed. Some let the difficulties life presents &#8216;roll off their back like water off a duck&#8217;, others attack them head on.</p>
<p>Adjusting to the style of another person and dealing with the dozens of daily choices living together presents &#8211; especially when the preferences of one party conflicts with another &#8211; can be very difficult. But stress results most often when one or both of the two parties is unrealistic, unwilling to communicate or compromise, or are even downright unfair.</p>
<p>Sometimes the only solution is to part ways. But long before that happens, if the relationship is valuable, there are several ways to resolve conflicts that avoid chronic stress.</p>
<p>Acute stress is something of a misnomer. It generally refers to a stress that is short-lived, even though the word &#8216;acute&#8217; can make the event sound severe. But whether minor or major, such episodes are all but inevitable in close relationships. Health problems, money concerns, conflicts with other family members, disagreements over child-rearing&#8230; there&#8217;s no end of possibilities.</p>
<p>But acute stress isn&#8217;t very harmful. The episode fades or a resolution is found and life returns to normal. When a series of problems occurs, and most importantly when individuals believe they don&#8217;t have what it takes to solve them, chronic stress can result.</p>
<p>But the way out, though not easy, is simple. There are, in fact, very rare circumstances that place us in situations that have no resolution. Very few people have no potential resources for resolving them.</p>
<p>No single, concrete event in raising children is all-decisive &#8211; with few exceptions. Many couples have worked successfully through times of low income or high debt, and often developed stronger relationships as a result. Most health problems are temporary. If life were nothing but a series of disasters we couldn&#8217;t cope with, insurance companies would go broke.</p>
<p>Reducing stress in relationships can be achieved by a series of techniques almost anyone can adopt. Evaluating problems objectively, looking long-term, reminding oneself and each other of the values that formed the relationship initially can go a long way toward lessening the perceived severity of problems. </p>
<p>That also helps build the awareness that sometimes the resource you need most to solve a problem is looking at you across the dinner table.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">When you look in the mirror, you may think you may know what your body shape is.<span> </span>Or you may cover up the unshapely areas and not really see yourself as you are. Do you know how much fat you&#8217;re carrying, compared to how much muscle? Do you know the answers to these questions? Are you ready to make your personal plan for losing weight and keeping it off? Understanding your body is the first step to reaching your personal shape.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">As someone who teaches both doctors and the public about obesity. I believe weight loss has been overemphasized and body shape underemphasized. You have probably read about the Body-Mass Index (BMI), which is a weight to height ratio. If your BMI is greater than 25, you are considered overweight, and if it is over 30, you are considered obese. This ratio has been a powerful way for scientists to document the obesity epidemic and its effect on health and disease. </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-US">However, when it comes to you as an individual, it can be misleading. A football player can be considered overweight on <span> </span>the BMI scale, but if the extra weight being carried <span> </span>is muscle, he is not really fat. A thin woman can have a normal BMI, yet still be over-fat.
