Lobo Daily Sketch

I'm going to start this off with a disclaimer. This isn't a hate post, it's not meant to start a movement of any sorts or get a bunch of replies about how this guy is the devil and how he drew pouches and shoulder pads and no feet. Pouches are awesome, GIANT shoulder pads are even more so, and his comics are riddled with feet. Though I've never read a comic made better by adding more feet so that complaint has always bee very funny to me.

Rob Liefeld is a comic book cheerleader, played a huge role in my early days of reading comics and has always been a very vocal supporter of me as a professional creator. So my following post is meant in good fun.

A lot of people are up in arms about a lot of things in comics these days. There seems to be a new hot button topic every other day. My twitter feed reads like some sort of Sorkin episode. Everyone is talking so fast while a camera is sprinting behind them as they walk from room to room battling the finer points of who owns what, who screwed who, what company is more evil than the other, and so on and so on. I love Sorkin, but sometimes it just gets to be too much. Then I listen to a podcast with Rob...

... and I have decided that he must be stopped. (again, not really. Take it easy everyone)

He's writing a comic that will feature Lobo and his feelings on the character. That Lobo had become the Wile E Coyote of comics. That he had become to gag based and he would be making him more badass and hardcore. I'm all for everyone doing their thing with the toys there given and I'm sure he'll write a fun comic. But I for one, LOVED the humor that Lobo comics have brought over the years. There are 2348 comics on the shelves that have badass, hardcore, I'm here to get serious characters. There are very few humor books, especially when you start looking into the mainstream lines. Giffen, Bisley and the like have given me some great laughs over the years with their Lobo comics. It was a nice little corner to go to when everyone is in tights was grimacing and getting broody. Having Lobo cut off an old woman's arms and legs while hunting down Santa... well that's just my kind of comics.

Again, this is all in good fun. Rob's going to do his thing and I'm sure you all will enjoy it. I don't get my fanboy rage on very often and thought I'd take my chance today in my Daily Sketch. Lobo is sad over the end of his fun era. Now he has to go get a REAL job in comics, and get serious. We'll see you again one day, funny Lobo.

So there, Damn you Rob. You're killing my childhood... or at lease my early adulthood, or something. :P

Maurice Sendak, creator of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE passed away this week. There's not many names you can mention that played a bigger role in nearly every kids life. That book has been in my house in some for or another since before I can remember. My son 2 copies now and will own many more thru his lifetime.

I thought a lot about that book this morning. I've said "That book isn't as good as I always thought it was." And after some time today, I've been wrong in saying that. The strength of that book is how vastly different it is being read thru the eyes of your 7 year old self than the 34 year old man I am now. I grumble at how quickly it moves and doesn't actually show you that much in the way of imaginary worlds, or even WILD THINGS really.

But then I remember how big my mind was at 7. Those gaps are important, those spaces are crucial. They allowed me to imagine on my own where the wild things WERE instead of being told and shown every corner. Imagination is a powerful thing. That book shows the beginnings of it and allows you to fill it all in.

So today's piece is a quick thank you to Maurice. I hope to revisit this subject over time in a more official manner but today we'll just give a sketch.

In honor of the man who touched so many children's lives, this and the rest of the weeks Daily Sketch proceeds will be donated to ST. JUDE CHILDREN'S RESEARCH HOSPITAL. Thank you in advance for helping out.

Beetlejuice Daily Sketch

Beetlejuice is one of my favorite movies of all time. I watched it more than any other movie as a kid. It was so stylish and funny and creepy and the and's to keep on going. I actually remember enjoying the Saturday morning cartoon as well. So today I kept with the Burton theme and went with good old Beetlejuice.

That and Beetlejuice were really big movies of my childhood and I watched them both more than I can count. I think I rented Beetlejuice once a month thru out elementary school. I'll jump on that one tomorrow.

Today's daily sketch was a Twitter suggestion. Pinocchio is one of the best stories ever. It's so dark and twisted when you really get down to it. I'll have to revisit the character and try to capture a bit more of that sinister side of the world.

Two more Cons down: c2e2 and Boston Comiccon

Just got home from back to back weekend Cons, C2E2 and Boston Comiccon. Seriously, if comics are dying, no one is telling the people at these cons. These are two cons heavy on comics and light on the celeb draw. Boston was basically wall to wall comic artists and it was amazing to see. The fans have been out in full force and they seem hungry to art and new comics. I loved every minute of these shows and am lucky to have such a supportive network of comic readers and art lovers on my side. A big thank you to each of you.

The last few cons have also had some of the coolest sketch and commission request with more end more outside the box ideas being tossed around. So fun. I even had a young girl dressed as one of my OZ characters, General Jinjur from Marvelous Land of Oz. So flattering.

Between the recent Kickstarter successes of great projects and the incredible turn out at these shows, I'm seeing that comics aren't dead or dying, they're evolving. The idea of ACCESS is changing things a great deal. There are fewer barriers between the people making things and the people who want to buy those things. It's exciting times.

Next stop for me is Germany and Charlotte in June. See you there!

Concrete Daily Sketch

Some days I have a blank on what to sketch for the morning warm-up. This is where Twitter comes in handy. I reach out and ask for suggestions, get blasted with around 100 in a few minutes and then like magic, I no longer have a blank. Connecting directly with people like that is fantastic and can be really inspiring.

Today's suggestion came from my friend, Jeff Lemire. Concrete. Now, I'm going to expose myself (not in that what, take it easy) and admit I've never met Concrete. I have no reason why. It's just one of those books I have always been aware of but was never exposed to it. No one ever talked to me about it, or suggested reading it, and I'm not really sure. There, I said it. I haven't read Concrete. But the character design is so appealing. A big rock guy. I liked that the instinct to make rock harsh, with an edge. But Concrete was soft, round, subtle. What a great design.

Spawn Daily Sketch

I LOVED Spawn. A lot of people want to rewrite the 90's like none of us enjoyed what was going on and that comics were all around bad. But if you've noticed lately, all of us that grew up on comics in the 90's are now MAKING the comics and we've been bringing it all back. Capullo is drawing one of the top sellers, Extreme Studios is relaunching, Age of Apocalypse being brought back in Uncanny X-Force (one of the best books on shelves right now) and I could on.

The 90's were fun. the 90's got me into comics so that will always be MY era of comics. Once day I'm sure I'll find an era to complain about and some youngster will be smacking me around. But until then, I'll be here loving those comics that got me excited to roll into the store every Wednesday. No comic did that for me more than Spawn.

It was a big story that covered Earth, Heaven and Hell but felt small at times. A confused guy living in an alley with bums. A homeless wizard like character would come and hint towards the bigger things to come. A cast of characters ranging from politicians and mobsters to angels and giant demons and clowns and, and, and. It was an awesome world and I loved living in it.

So todays warm up is Spawn. I'm a little unhappy with how safe this one feels. I really intended to push it but as I was coming to a finish I realized I didn't really go that far. I'll have to revisit Spawn again soon and get my revenge.

TMNT Daily Sketch

I grew up on these guys. I had a club with the neighborhood called the Turtle Club. We each picked a name, sat in a shed with a black and white TV and watched whatever channels we could get to come in. I loved this stuff. It's probably the reason I've never really drawn them. It's like they're too much a part of me to mess with. I was commissioned to work on one of the shows once but they didn't like my take.

I'm ok with my take here, but I will be revisiting the Turtles at a later date, that's for sure.

Labyrinth Daily Sketch

The Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies of all time. As much as I love that movie, I do not have a ton of love for the David Bowie Goblin King. It's one of the only parts of the movie (besides the black screen dancing flame puppets) that just doesn't hold up in time. It's a bit dated. So today I played with that design a bit.
