Skype 6.4 for Mac With Easier to Use Instant Messaging

Today we have released a new version of Skype for Mac. In this release, we have focused on ease of use of our instant messaging experience.

New features and improvements in Skype 6.4 for Mac include:

Infinite chat scrolling
Improved find from a chat conversation
Improved file transfer
Improved send and receive contacts
Support for Simplified Chinese

Infinite chat scrolling

We have introduced a new way of loading history. Each time you scroll upward, more and more messages will be loaded from history. Scrolling is motion sensitive, the faster you scroll the more messages load. To jump back in history. Ctrl + click anywhere (or right click) in the chat and select “Jump back “ and select the period you want to jump back to. We have also separated dates from the timestamps and created date sections instead to make it more visible in the chat. Skype will index all chat history when you first login and consume less resources after indexing completion.

Improved find within the chat

We have redesigned the find functionality to be part of the chat view, instead of opening in a separate window. You can easily navigate between results and see the total number of matches in the chat. Current match is highlighted in yellow. You can also search strings by using “Starts with” or “Contains” option. Recent searches are stored so that you can reuse them in the future.

Custom Chat Styles removal

We have removed custom chat styles to ensure consistency across our clients. If you prefer a more compact layout for your chat, you can go to preferences > messaging > “use compact chat style”

Improved send and receive contacts

We have redesigned the way contacts are sent and received by users. When multiple contacts are sent, the recipient will see an expandable list in the conversation and can either add them all at once or add them one by one. If the received contact is already in the contacts list, or is blocked, the recipient will see the relevant status.

Improved file transfer

We have improved file transfer allowing users to reaccept the file when receiving. File transfer will remain active till the sender cancels it.

Support for Simplified Chinese

We have added language support for Simplified Chinese.

Supported Operating System

OS X 10.6 or later is required. Leopard (OS X 10.5) users can continue to use Skype 6.3 for Mac.

Calling	Improved dial pad animation in the calling toolbar.
Calling	You can use firewire device for Skype video call.

Skype 2.6 for Windows Phone 8

Today we have released a minor update for Skype for Windows Phone 8, version 2.6. In this release we focused on further increasing the reliability of chat and call notifications, improving reliability of calls to phone numbers and resolving occasional missing message preview in the recent conversations list.

Known limitations

Getting two notifications for a message from a Messenger contact	If you’re signed into Message Hub and the Skype app, you may get two notifications for a message from a Messenger contact.	Tap your profile picture in the top right corner of the home page, choose “notifications” from the menu on your profile and turn the Messenger notifications off.
Calls keep ringing when answered on a different device, or ended by the caller		We’re working on a change to address this issue. Right now you can tap Ignore to dismiss the call screen, or it will disappear after 60s.
Can’t sign in with a Microsoft account that isn’t joined to a Skype account	Today the app requires you to have already signed in with a Microsoft account on another client, and either merged with an existing Skype account, or created a new one	We’ll address this in a future release – so you can sign in with any Microsoft account and either merge with your Skype account, or create a new one
Video stops when the call is in the background	If you’re in a video call and put the app in the background, video stops and both users have to restart it when you reopen the app	We’re working on this for a future release, so that video starts again as soon as you restart the app.
Reading a message on Windows Phone doesn’t mark it as read on other devices	Messages still appear unread on a different device	We’re working on this for a future release.
All calls received when the app is closed appear as audio calls	Even video calls are initially shown as audio calls, and you need to add video once the app starts.	We’re working on this for a future release, so you can answer video calls with video straight away.

Skype Video Messaging: Preview for Windows 8 Users

Earlier this week, we mentioned that the preview of Skype Video Messaging for Skype for Windows 8 would be “coming soon.” Well, it is now available in the Windows Store.

Skype Video Messaging lets you record and send a video message to friends and family on Skype anytime, even when they’re unavailable; they can watch your Video Message next time they’re on Skype. Here’s what you can expect to see:

Skype Video Messaging: Preview for Windows Desktop Users

Today we’ve released the preview of Skype Video Messaging for Skype for Windows desktop on Windows 7 or above. This feature will also be made available shortly for Skype for Windows 8. Skype Video Messaging lets you record a video message and send it to people who matter to you on Skype anytime, even when they’re unavailable; they will be able to watch the Video Message next time they’re online.

To get the preview version of Skype Video Messaging, download the latest beta version of Skype for Windows desktop on Windows 7 or above (Please note: this feature will require Flash; the beta version of Skype for Windows desktop with Video Messaging in preview may not be available in all markets). This feature is also in preview for users of Skype for Mac, Skype for iPhone, Skype for iPad and Skype for Android. Skype for Windows 8 and Skype for Windows Phone users can also receive and view Video Messages; the ability to record and send Video Messages will be coming to these platforms soon.

Skype for Windows 8 Updated

Today we released an update to Skype for Windows 8. In the 1.6 release, we continue to address top user feedback and deliver the most requested features.

Contact blocking

With this update, we wanted to give our users higher control over who can contact them by adding the ability to block contacts.

To block a contact, select the person’s name to open up the chat window. Bring up the command bar by swiping at the top or bottom of your screen (or right click), and select block. You may also choose whether you want to remove or report the contact request as spam. Performance improvements

We have improved loading speed and reliability across the application. As a result, contacts load speed should now be a lot faster.

Upgrade now via the Windows Store, and share your feedback by discussing what matters on the Skype Community Forum.

Additionally in this release, we have fixed a number of issues from the previous release, most notable of them are:

Video	In some cases, outgoing video was not displayed after switching camera in the Options menu
