			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Each year the North Carolina Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (NCSLA) sponsors the Sara Aull Student Award.  This competition was initiated in 1981 to honor former member Sara Aull by promoting student participating in NCSLA.   Sara Aull served as editor of the NCSLA Bulletin from 1975 to 1981. She had been an active member of the Special Libraries Association from 1952 (then as Science Librarian at the University of Houston in Texas) until her death in January 1998 in Landis, NC. In 1973 Sara Aull received the honor of being inducted into the SLA Hall of Fame.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Recipients of the Sara Aull award will receive the following</span>:</p>
<ul>
<li>Appointment to an NCSLA committee, chosen based on the student’s interest and the organization’s need, beginning in January 2013.</li>
<li>A year of paid student membership to SLA, NCSLA, and a division of their choice</li>
<li>Free entry into NCSLA events for the length of their student appointment, up to one calendar year</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Applicants must be students enrolled in a North Carolina graduate Library Science program, with a graduation date of May 2013 or later.</li>
<li>Applicants must be available to serve as a committee member of NCSLA for a term of one year or a minimum of one semester for students graduating in May.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>APPLICATION PROCEDURES</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Prepare a written statement no longer than 500 words that answers the following questions:<strong></strong></li>
</ul>
<p>v  What is the value of participating in NCSLA and how it will contribute to your professional development?<strong></strong></p>
<p>v  What contributions can you make to the profession through your participation in NCSLA?<strong></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Submit a current resume or curriculum vitae that includes information on the applicant’s organizational and leadership experience (including any offices held and involvement in any special projects or services) and any other relevant professional information.<strong></strong></li>
</ul>

<p>1. Overview of copyright and fair use with a focus on using music and video.<br />
2. Issues in preservation and digitization including orphan works.<br />
3. Best practices and the librarian&#8217;s role as an agent &#8211; duty to monitor patrons, when to intervene in cases of potential abuse, and how to deal with administrators, faculty, and other people in authority who are demanding more than you are comfortable with.</p>
<p>The program will be held from <strong>10:00am &#8211; 12:00pm at the <a href="http://www.ncbiotech.org/" target="_blank">North Carolina Biotechnology Center</a> in Research Triangle Park</strong>.  An optional, on-site networking lunch will follow the program.</p>

<p style="text-align: center" align="center"><strong>Susan Craft</strong></p>
<p>Susan Craft obtained her MSLS from UNC Chapel Hill in August 2012. Prior to that, she graduated from the University of Mississippi with degrees in English and French and minors in chemistry and math. While a student at UNC, she was an intern at the US Environmental Protection Agency Library and won the 2011 Sara Aull Student Paper Award. She went on to present this paper as a contributed paper at the SLA 2012 Conference in Chicago.</p>
<p style="text-align: left" align="center"> In May 2012, Susan joined the North Carolina Biotechnology Center as a librarian. There, she helps with researching, categorizing and managing companies in the NCBiotech Company Directory, sending biotech and funding news to staff and assisting clients with information needs. She is currently a member of the NCSLA Communications Committee.</p>
<p style="text-align: center" align="center"><strong>Teresa Leonard</strong></p>
<p>I have been on the library staff at The News &amp; Observer since 1987 and director since 1993.<br />
In addition to providing research and maintaining the archive and intranet, I also maintain a local history blog, publishing content from the blog in a weekly column, maintain our moms&#8217; website, and provide content for a published daily feature of online conversation.<br />
I have served NC/SLA in the past as president, president elect, education chair, and secretary. I was also a director from 1997 to 2002 and the chapter webmaster from 2003 to 2007. As education chair, I coordinated two day-long professional development seminars.<br />
I have been active in the SLA News Division, serving as chair, chair-elect and professional development chair. As chair-elect, I was responsible for all division programming at the national conference. I also ran two full-day CE workshops at the national conference.</p>
<p style="text-align: left" align="center">At the N&amp;O, I was responsible for newsroom staff development for four years, creating ongoing workshops and programming outside speakers from the community and throughout the industry. I also worked with the development of the North Carolina Open Government Coalition and maintained their website for its first year. I am currently working with the NC Scholastic Media Association at the UNC School of Journalism and Mass Communication to conduct its yearly high school journalism workshop.</p>
<p style="text-align: center" align="center"><strong>Mohan Ramaswamy</strong></p>
<p>Mohan Ramaswamy is the Librarian for the Life Sciences and Graduate Services for the North Carolina State University Libraries. Mohan provides research support for agriculture and life sciences users, coordinates graduate student services, and organizes research workshops. Previously, Mohan served as an Associate Professor and Science Librarian at Kansas State University Libraries. Mohan served as a director of the United States Agriculture Information Network Executive Council during 2008-2009, and he has served in several USAIN committees. Mohan has also served as the chair of the American Library Association&#8217;s Equality Award Jury and in several committees of ALA and Kansas Library Association. Mohan has a PhD in entomology, and he has served as a faculty member in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, India, from 1988 to 2000.</p>

<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Jeanne Hoover</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left">Jeanne Hoover is the Science Reference Librarian at East Carolina University. At East Carolina, Jeanne serves as the liaison librarian to the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Nutrition Science, and the College of Health and Human Performance. Originally from Pennsylvania, Jeanne has a M.L.I.S. from the University of Pittsburgh and B.A. from the Pennsylvania State University. Initially, Jeanne’s involvement in SLA began during library school when she served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Special Libraries Association Pittsburgh Student Group and participated in the larger SLA Pittsburgh Chapter. Currently, she serves as the Communications Leader for NCSLA. Jeanne is interested in advancing professional development opportunities for NCSLA members, especially for members who are unable to attend events due to distance and/or travel funds.</p>
<p style="text-align: center"><strong>Tiffany Lopez</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left">Tiffany López is the reference librarian at Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell &amp; Jernigan, LLP, the Triangle’s largest business and litigation law firm. Prior to taking on this role, Tiffany was the Assistant Library Network Coordinator for the Environmental Protection Agency, a position that she describes as being a “librarian to the librarians” at the agency. Tiffany served as the NCCU student chapter president during library school; upon graduation, she was elected to the three-year director position on the NCSLA board. In this capacity, Tiffany has assisted with event planning and hosting, she began the formal process of polling members for programming feedback and ideas, and she has worked on a complete overhaul of the North Carolina Chapter Practices. Tiffany was the recipient of NCSLA’s 2011 Horizon Award, and looks forward to furthering her leadership experience within the chapter. She hopes to strengthen communication within the chapter, capitalize on collaborative programming opportunities, and enhance the overall member experience.</p>
