Apnea causes the person to wake up with a heavy and loud snort, usually gasping for breath. The cycle of apnea can last from 20 seconds to 3 minutes, occurring frequently during sleep. If this happens more than 15 times per hour a night, then a diagnosis of obstructive apnea can be made.</p>

<p>Some people are born with an anatomy that predisposes them to snore.</p>
<p><strong>Congenital deformities</strong></p>
<p>People who were born with cleft palate, poliomyelitis, and muscular dystrophy are at increased risk for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.</p>

<p>How much sleep the body needs varies from one person to another. Most adults need between seven and eight hours each night. Insomnia is usually characterized based on the problem&#8217;s duration. Symptoms of insomnia usually lasting one week are considered to be transient insomnia. I have, and it wasn&#8217;t until that day that I realized I really needed to sort out my snoring problem. My wife agreed, as I had kept her awake for many years. We went online and looked at some of the snore aids and sleep apnea devices that were available from stores like Amazon.</p>
<p>I found a useful looking item called an ant-snoring chin strap, little more than a head harness with a chin cup that helps you to keep your mouth shut during the sleeping hours. Sleeping on my back seemed to cause mouth breathing for me, and if this product could stop me mouth breathing, the snoring may stop for good.</p>
<p>I must admit to a feeling of embarrassment when I first put the chinstrap on, but after a few days of use I finally felt more comfortable with it. I was absolutely amazed at the results I achieved. From a severe and regular snorer to almost no snoring at all was quite an achievement. My wife was happy that the snoring was far less noisy and far less frequent. For under $30, this was a great product.</p>
<p>A lot of folks snore all through their lives, many looking on it as an irritation rather than a health concern. A lot of snorers also exhibit symptoms of the more serious condition known as sleep apnea, and a visit to your doctor may be a prudent first step towards a good diagnosis. If however, you only suffer from very mild symptoms, many of these over the counter remedies can help.</p>
<p>So for those who think that relief from snoring is impossible, try out a chin strap of sleep apnea pillow, and see how you get on. You may find your snoring can be cured more easily than you think.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sometimes falling asleep is no easy task, and for many it&#8217;s downright difficult to do under any circumstance. Due to its sedative effect, alcohol is a common choice for those who have a hard time finding a way to fall asleep. It&#8217;s important to consider the other effects, however, that alcohol will have—namely on the very sleep these people use it to achieve. Booze before bedtime may appear to ease the transition into dreamland, but what happens after that is well worth taking note of.</p>
<p>Adults function best with anywhere between 7-9 hours of sleep per night. The consumption of alcoholic beverages before bedtime, interestingly enough, will effectively serve to cut the number of hours actually acquired in half. In fact, drinking alcohol at any time three hours or less before bed can lead to both early waking and disruptions in the sleep cycle on the whole. The entire sleep process is advanced by alcohol intake: N-REM sleep [also know as "deep sleep"] increases, incrementally decreasing REM [or "Rapid Eye Movement" rest]. The problem is that you need both types, in very balanced doses. You may be surprised to learn that these facts don&#8217;t deter many: in recent studies, some 28% of insomniacs claimed to have depended on alcohol as a means for falling asleep, and fully 67% described the practice as helpful.</p>
<p>The difficulty with this nighttime &#8220;medication&#8221; approach is plain: alcohol can either make sleep disorders more frequent, or increase your susceptibility to acquire them. The most common sleep disorder that occurs as a result of the consumption of alcohol before bedtime is obstructive sleep apnea, and it&#8217;s one of the most destructive in regard to heart health. Drinking alcohol will narrow your air passages and thereby make it harder to breathe at night. As you gasp for the air that&#8217;s being blocked, your sleep cycle is deeply disturbed. When air is obstructed in the passages, your heart must work much harder to get the oxygen that it needs, which results in lasting health problems if it persists over a long period of time.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that the consumption of alcohol even just an hour before bedtime causes major disruptions in the second part of the sleep cycle, which will lead to early awakening. As mentioned earlier, drinking alcohol before bedtime will not only shorten REM sleep but increase deep sleep. The resultant physiological state is known as &#8220;REM rebound.&#8221; After consuming high doses of alcohol, the body becomes sedated, causing you to fall asleep quickly. After you begin to snooze, your body becomes adjusted to that alcohol running through your blood stream. By the time the second part of the sleep cycle is underway, however, your body has metabolized [re: eliminated] the alcohol from your system, and it will attempt to return your metabolism to normal levels. This is where that rebound begins to occur. Instead of successfully returning to physiologically-normal levels [gauged by certain sleep variables such as the amount of REM sleep acquired at night] your body will over-compensate and change its course in the opposite direction, which results in a sleep disturbance. Furthermore, this disturbance will disrupt the proportionality of the various sleep stages. When rebound and its associated disturbances occur, your body won&#8217;t feel fully rested the next day. We all know what that&#8217;s like: an unclear [or "foggy"] state of mind and a marked inability to perform simple tasks at an optimal and efficient performance level.</p>
<p>Several studies have evaluated next-day performance and alertness in healthy people who consumed alcohol before falling asleep. In one such study, young pilots drank alcohol between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in quantities sufficient to result in BACs [blood-alcohol concentrations] of 0.10-0.12 percent right before bedtime. The following morning, over 14 hours after consuming alcohol and with BACs reset to 0, the performance of pilots in a flight simulator was significantly impaired when compared to their performance after imbibing a placebo. The lack of continuity and longevity of the sleep they experienced after heavy drinking is the same as what everyone will suffer when doing so: it simply makes people slower and less attentive the following day.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear by now that the effects of alcohol on sleep can be dire. Though you may believe it&#8217;s helping you sleep, the consumption of alcohol before bed will only result in next-day fatigue and an inability to remain alert… and can actually lead to a serious sleeping disorder. Aside from the havoc it wreaks on your system when frequently drunk at high levels, alcohol can also be dangerous to others around you. There&#8217;s no question that critical mistakes are made every day by folks in all walks of life due to the effects of alcohol consumption, whether in the intoxicated state or, like the pilots mentioned, well after you think you&#8217;ve &#8220;slept it off.&#8221; Remember that there are several alternatives to alcohol that are both healthier and more effective when it comes to getting the shut-eye you require on a nightly basis. For starters, you might try getting into a sleep routine, which is a tremendously effective way to train your body&#8217;s physiological nature into winding down at night. You&#8217;re probably already aware that you should avoid caffeine, dairy products, and smoking before bedtime. Finally, consider going to bed an hour or two later—it can help you go to sleep faster because you&#8217;ll be more fatigued. And bear in mind that your old mattress may be part of the problem… switching to memory foam will improve your body&#8217;s blood circulation and alleviate the pressure points associated with traditional innerspring mattresses so that you get more restful sleep each night. In sum, you can do better for your body than waking up with a hangover every day. It&#8217;s time to make strides toward getting some quality sleep without alcohol.</p>

This was evident by having a harder and harder time getting my pants buttoned or zipped, slipping a notch in my belt, etc. I would guess I was about 20 lbs over weight and it all seemed to be right around my waist. <p>Diet<br />
I started out with the &#8220;D&#8221; word, can you believe it? Of course you can, as any weight loss program has to take this into consideration. Here is the simple fact you can not eat 5000 calories a day (or a meal for some of us) and expect to maintain or even loss weight. A couple of common sense items is all for this area. You need to control the number of calories you take into your body. There are plenty of diet books and websites that will help you decide what is right for you, but somewhere around 2000/day seems to be the norm. Here is the key &#8211; whatever you decide is right for you spread them out over the day. If you try to &#8220;diet&#8221; and eat little or nothing for breakfast and lunch and then eat all you calories at dinner (followed by a late night snack &#8211; come on I do it too so let&#8217;s be honest). This pattern causes your body to go into survival mode due to the starvation the first half of the day and store most of the calories as fat when it finally does get feed to get it through the next morning. So find a way to spread your calories out over the day,</p>
<p>small amounts ever couple of hours to keep the hunger away and feed your body as it needs it, not all at once. So I packed my desk at work with low calorie items (pretzels, granola, almonds, etc.) and between meals (10 am &amp; 2 pm) I would snack a little to keep my metabolism up. And I had a snack again at night, it is important if you do this you give your body time to process those calories. Right before bed it not the time, try to make your final snack 2 &#8211; 3 hours before going to bed.</p>

I am going for the throat here, can you believe after the &#8220;D&#8221; word I was so bold as to suggest the &#8220;E&#8221; word. Again this shouldn&#8217;t be news; you need to burn more calories that you take in if you want to shed the pounds. The trick it to find something you enjoy doing and then don&#8217;t over do it. DO NOT START a new exercise program without first consulting your doctor. There is an old story about a man who lifted a calf each morning and then finally one day he lifted a cow (hint: the calf grew into a cow). Basically he did it in small increments each time until he built up the strength to lift the cow. For me it was walking, so I started just going around the block I lived on. I added an extra block every couple days or once a week. Before long I was walking a little over 3 miles around my neighborhood. So don&#8217;t try to run a marathon your first time out. Start small and build, consistency is the key.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people enjoy waking up well rested, but for many getting to sleep is a difficult process.  There are many things that are keeping people up at night.  These five things are very common issues that people run into that keeps them from getting good sleep.</p>
<p>One of the most common reasons is having a sleep schedule that is too random for the body to adapt to.  If you work nights then days, you will have a hard time having a normal sleeping cycle.  For those who have weekends off, sleeping in late into the day on Saturday and Sunday can actually hurt the ability to sleep during the week.  Going to bed and waking up at fairly regular hours will help the most.</p>
<p>You may not realize it but at night your body will heat up under the covers.  At times you wake up during the night because your body is too warm.  Try being slightly cool when you first go to bed.  Through the night you will heat up your mattress and pillow and stay warm and not wake up.</p>
<p>Sometimes the bedding or mattress is uncomfortable.  Many aren&#8217;t aware of the tossing and turning during the night because you aren&#8217;t conscious of it.  Consider getting more comfortable bedding and a mattress to help with this.</p>
<p>Stress is one of the biggest reasons people don&#8217;t get good sleep.  Try to relax before bed.  When in bed and having difficulty falling asleep, don&#8217;t worry about it so much.  The more you think about not getting sleep, the harder it is to get sleep.  If you are just laying there, get up and try to go to bed later.</p>
<p>For some the lack of sleep is a medical issue.  There are hundreds of different reasons that someone could medically not be able to sleep.  Consider asking your doctor about your sleep issues to make sure that it&#8217;s not a bigger problem that you might actually be having.</p>
