Vidya Balan has been picked to be the brand ambassador for sleep awareness month this March. This month, people will be made aware on the sensitivity of sleep disorders through the various symptoms which are normally taken for granted. Sleep disorders are increasingly becoming rampant among Indians leading to a call for more regular checkups.

The sleep awareness month will see Indian Sleep Disorders Association (ISDA) and pharmaceutical company Abbott India organize various awareness programs, including camps, with healthcare professionals who are experts in the field of insomnia and other sleep-related issues in metros and smaller cities across India.

Just when you thought that actress Gwyneth Paltrow has everything in order, she reveals that she too has been having problems with sleeping comfortably. Paltrow admits that she doesn’t get enough sleep and has even turned to a book, “Light’s Out: Sleep, Sugar and Survival” by T.S. Wiley to get some sensible shuteye.

Some of Paltrow’s health concerns she discussed with her doctor include aging and hormonal imbalances, something that affects some women in their mid to late 30s. Paltrow’s doctors advised her to get some natural sunlight everyday, relaxation techniques before bed, eliminating caffeine and an adequate fitness regime to help her get at least eight hours of solid sleep per night.

Two former day care workers from Ohio have been charged with three counts of child endangering and three counts each of misrepresentation by childcare provider for slipping an OTC supplement into candies to make kids sleep during nap time.

Parents complained that their kids looked groggy after being picked up from the day care and were notified of the malpractice when a co-worker notified police in December that Hartley and Scott gave the children melatonin in candy. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone that helps control sleeping and waking cycles. Possible side effects of the supplement form include dizziness, abdominal discomfort, headaches, confusion, sleepwalking and nightmares.

Pamela Hartley and Donna Scott got most serious charges that could be applied.

For any country or region, there will be a place that will solicit the tag of being the “Sleep Deprived Capital”. And as far as the United Kingdom is concerned, the unlikely tag is pointing to Aberdeen after a survey was conducted. According to the collected information, people over there slept just 5 hours and 23 minutes a night.

People in the UK at an average enjoy six hours and seven minutes, which is far lesser than the recommended eight hours of sleep every night. And like most of us, the main cause were identified as money problems, inappropriate environment at work, troubles in family, and relationship issues.

It looks like even hotels are doing their part for Sleep Awareness Week, revealing various sleep packages for people looking for some sensible and luxurious slumber. Like this one from New York, The Benjamin Hotel is offering a new Art of Sleep Package which starts at $289 a night.

This includes consultation, with the hotel’s sleep concierge, a bedtime snack of peanut-butter-and-jelly finger sandwiches; 20 per cent off a sleep-inducing spa treatment at the hotel spa and a 2 p.m. checkout. Not a bad package to check out, especially if you are among the sleep deprived people today.

There is a new app for the iPhone or iPod Touch that was made to help the sleep deprived folks and it goes by the name of the Sleeping Pill 1.0. This is a new app that is said to provide people a good night’s sleep where three stages to accelerate tiredness of users are used.

Stage 1 clears the mind so you can relax and free yourself to fall asleep, stage 2 helps users to relax and relieve stress. Finally stage 3 helps your eyes to tire by getting users to follow a “Z” across the device screen in a specific pattern. The app is now available at the iTunes app store for $0.99.

Have you experienced some teeth-grinding episodes when you are asleep? Well if you are and are wondering why this is happening, you may be working too hard or are stressed out. Also known as Sleep Bruxism, this has found to be common and yet unresolved. However new studies may yet link it and provide us with a better understanding of why this occurs.

“Its causes are still relatively unknown, but stress has been implicated. We aimed to investigate whether different stress-factors, and different coping strategies, were more or less associated with these bruxism symptoms.”

The study was made by Dr Maria Giraki, from Heinrich-Heine-University in Dusseldorf, Germany who studied 69 people, 48 of whom were tagged as “bruxers”.

For those of you who’s spouse or yourself snores so loud that you or your partner cannot sleep at night, it’s time for some serious change, the anti-snore device MySnoringSolution may be just what you need.

There are many snoring solutions out there but this one might be the best solution for those of you who don’t want a surgery nor chemicals sprayed into your mouth.

Here’s how it work, the snoring jaw suppoter basically keeps your lower jaw from opening and increases the airway, thereby eliminating snoring:

How it works – Snoring research has shown that a jaw supporter, keeping the lower jaw in an upward position increases the three dimensional space in the airway, reduces air velocity and soft tissue vibration. This action can eliminate or substantially reduce snoring.

A jaw supporter is based on the same principle as CPR. The airway must be open to allow air to pass through the throat. A constricted or collapsed airway causes snoring and/or OSA. A jaw supporter can hold the lower jaw in a position so that it does not fall backwards/down during the night and cause the airway to collapse. Maintaining a clear airway improves breathing and reduces snoring.

I have heard from some of my friends that this has worked wonders so I think this snoring jaw supporter could be the best anti-snoring device out there.

You can get it here for $89.97. It is not cheap by any means but if this anti-snore device fixes your snoring habits for good, it could pay for itself and a whole lot more restful sleep for your loved ones.

Patients who seek some help with their sleep problems over at the Stanford University Medical Center can now look forward to better diagnostics and recovery after the latter purchased ASTI’s Ecotones Duet Sleep Sound Machines. The Ecotones Duet units are now available to patients during their hospital stay without charge, through the Guest Services Concierge Program.

This machine makes use of a built-in microphone that continuously “listens” to its surroundings for intrusive background noises. In response to unwanted noise, Ecotones Duet dynamically re-mixes its audio playback with complementary natural sounds and automatically adjusts volume to neutralize the offending noise. When intrusive noises subside, Ecotones Duet gradually and automatically returns to normal playback settings.

It seems that sleepless nights may be tied up with how much you weigh and eat and this issue will be tackled at this year’s National Sleep Awareness Week to be held from March 7 to 13. Health benefits will be among the topics which include proper rest and surprisingly, weight control.

There are two appetite-controlling hormones which contribute to the loss of sleep. Not only are you hungry in one sleep study, the participants’ desire for high-calorie, carbohydrate-dense foods rose 45% after inadequate sleep. Another study indicates that those who sleep less than eight hours a night have a higher level of body fat.

Hence if you want to battle the bulge and sleep better, this is one event you should not miss!

While sleeping has to be the favorite and simple pastime anyone can think off, it looks like you may also have to watch how long and how much you sleep. While sleeping is healthy, oversleeping can become a health hazard, putting you closer to that dreaded diabetes illness everyone is trying to avoid.

A study was conducted on 20,000 Chinese adults where napped for at least 4 to 6 days of a week had a higher prevalence of diabetes type 2. However, the researchers stress that their findings do not prove that napping itself is the culprit.

Men and women who napped four to six days per week were 36 percent more likely than those who never napped to have diabetes. Similarly, daily nappers had a 28 percent higher risk

Here is something weird. It seems that for some reason, sleep deprived people may encounter some reduced brain density courtesy of a study from the University of Cambridge. This was done through brain imaging where the people over at the University were able to link insomnia to brain density reduction in grey matter, fundamental to brain activity.

The study is significant because it begins to explain how insomnia disrupts the brain’s functioning. Whereas previous researchers have known that insomnia disrupts the brain’s functioning, the real cause of the malfunction had not been known.

The Federal Aviation Administration is cracking down on pilots who are skipping sleep the night before a flight after a plane crash near Buffalo, New York pointed to fatigue problems. U.S. airline regulators will be asked to seek data on how many pilots are indeed skipping sleep to ensure maximum safety for the passengers who embark on various flights.

The data may aid a push by advocates such as the National Transportation Safety Board for more federal action to combat fatigue. The Feb. 12, 2009, crash by Pinnacle Airlines Corp.’s Colgan unit near Buffalo killed 50 after the captain’s faulty response to a cockpit warning put the aircraft into an aerodynamic stall.

Sleep specialists get a bit of new help as Philips announces its newest sleep analysis tool with the acquisition of the Somnolyzer 24×7 automated scoring solutions business from the Siesta Group. The Siesta Group is a Viennese research and clinical software company specialising in polysomnography-scoring (PSG) solutions for sleep centers.

This should be big help not only to sleep diagnostic centers but also for the people looking to remedy their sleep issues. This is a diagnostic aid for sleep and respiratory disorders which should help physicians and medical centers serve sleep troubled people, something that seems scarce these days.

The human tongue has a bearing when it comes to sleep apnea problems, most likely pointing to the blockages that occur when we are asleep due to air blockage. But now a surgical procedure may yet address this issue, an implant that is placed near the tongue and is programmed to keep parts of the tongue awake and avoid blockages.

Called Targeted Hypoglossal Neurostimulation (THN) Sleep Therapy, the technique consists of a small electrical device implanted under the skin near the lower jaw and along the Hypoglossal (12th cranial) nerve, then connected to a programmable implantable pulse generator (IPG) implanted near the surface of one’s upper chest.

The surgery takes less than 45 minutes to perform and will heal after a couple of days. Something that should be checked out, especially for people who have been suffering from sleep apnea. Check out the video.

The name could use some work but considering that Aswagandha is an Indian herb to help you sleep, it is not surprising why weird and hard to remember herbs are bound to have some medical benefits. Aswagandha is actually a scientific term for Withania somnifera and induces sleep for people suffering from insomnia. It calms the body and mind thus leading to eventual slumber.

Aswagandha’s odour is not palatable. It smells like a horse’s sweat. But its health benefits range from fighting insomnia to improving fertility levels, and from controlling diabetes to keeping epilepsy under check. It improves the muscles, fights fatigue and brings down the levels of trauma and suffering.

The design and concept is great but for $545, I would rather settle for a traditional clock. Besides, it looks like it can hypnotize you without knowing what to do next!

On a scientific note, the trigger behind the dreaded Narcolepsy has been discovered by some Swiss scientists. Apparently it was all traced to the protein called Trib2, something that is produced by neurones that also secrete the substance which helps keeps people awake.

The researcher team concluded that narcolepsy was the result of an attack by the body’s own immune system, after they found high levels of Trib2 antibodies amongst a sample of 120 narcoleptic patients. The antibodies end up destroying the hypocretic neurones.

By now, most of you have heard of the blocked artery that former president Bill Clinton had to deal with. All of it was linked to stress and sleep problems are one of them. It looks like Mr. Clinton took sleep and exercise for granted and has thus contributed to his health dilemma.

Thankfully though, he has vowed to change his habits and get more sleep. He will now manage his stress better and this includes regulating his sleep and of course getting proper exercise. Clinton, who had quadruple bypass surgery more than five years ago, was hospitalized Thursday to have a clogged artery opened after he felt discomfort in his chest. Tests showed that one of the bypasses from the surgery was completely blocked.

This time around, we have an alarm clock that combines two marquee brands, LEGO and Star Wars. Though they may look familiar in miniature pieces for kids to play with, these can be great alarm clocks fit for a child’s room.

They have designs such as this Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader clocks in a LEGO shape and measures just 8” tall. No word on when they would be available but are certain to be something that Star Wars fans will want in their bedrooms.

Here is a great two for one deal. While we all know that pillows and alarm clocks will never sing beautiful music together, here is one that integrates both. The Vibrating Alarm Clock pillow is the world’s first support pillow with a built in vibration alarm, allowing you a comfortable sleep with a brilliantly subtle wake-up function.

It comes with a digital alarm clock with vibration or audible alarm function and is made from soybean fiber, cotton, polyurethane foam filler, and cotton cover. It is powered by 6 AA batteries and weighs only 565 grams. It retails for $144 over at the Japan Trend Shop.

If you check out this story, you may agree that smoking doesn’t do you any good even if it is meant for curing snoring problems. For some reason, this dude came up with a crazy theory that smoking at certain points of the night would help sure snoring. Worst, this machine almost burned down his bed for his troubles.

And while it seems that his invention, a machine that would light a cigarette while asleep, seems ridiculous, it was eventually surrendered to Snorebond.com for inclusion in their museum of snoring artifacts in Bodmin. Do you believe in this machine? For some reason, I don’t think that smoking is a cure but rather an additional burden even if the intent is good.

We are all aware of the story of Sleeping Beauty but who would have thought that it would soon be a sickness in our modern age? Well apparently it is around and a 15 year old from Britain is inflicted with it. Louisa Ball got the “disease” when she was 13 after a bout with the flu. Louisa needs to be woken up forcefully or else she would end up sleeping for days or even up to a month!

When she does get up, these are only for brief spells. In the end, she was diagnosed with Kleine-Levin Syndrome where research conducted on this relatively rare disease is insufficient for now. The syndrome is unrelated to Narcolepsy where the patients are constantly tired and drop off for brief periods of sleep.

If you are tired of using your iPhone with the default alarm tone, here is one that should add some savvy to it. The Birdbox Alarm Clock turns your iPhone into a virtual cuckoo clock, an app that will surely wake you up on a fresher note.

If the app is not enough, you can always get this cool Birdbox that is shaped like one of those typical bird-house-alarm-clock hybrids. Available in different colors, the Birdbox costs only $12.75.

The Sara Poka Eye Pillow should be a great remedy for people who have some issues for their strained eyes which contribute to trouble when sleeping. These are soft pillows which you can use as a hot compress aid. Place it at your refrigerator if you want cold compress or microwave them, depending on what type of relief your eyes would need.

A charcoal sheet made from native Japanese timber absorbs and retains heat better than standard insulation materials. The travel-size pillow is perfect for business trips- use it for five minutes before a meeting, and your jet lag will melt away.

Price: $34.00

There is a new and revolutionary sleep aid available in the market thanks to Aikon Wellness, Inc. and it is called the Somniac PM. This new sleep aid aims to help sleep deprived and insomniacs gain better sleep all night long.

Somniac PM includes twelve ingredients that synergistically work in phases to help you relax, fall asleep and reach healthy REM and even deeper sleep levels. What makes this natural sleep aid unique, however, is that it includes two lesser-known compounds, Indium Sulphate and a plant-based natural stem cell recruiter derived from eggplant.

Sleep Apnea victims be forewarned. It seems that sleep apnea will do more than deprive you of sleep. Knowing that the brain will be severely affected by obstructive sleep apnea, it seems apparent that the more serious it grows, so does your health.

Brain damage is being wooed as the possible result from continuous sleep apnea due to reduced concentrations of gray matter in the brain. A gray matter refers to the brain’s cerebral cortex, where the majority of information processing takes place. These changes in brain structure may help explain the memory, cardiovascular and other problems experienced by people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

The researchers said further research is needed to determine whether reduced gray matter concentration is caused by sleep apnea, or whether preexisting abnormalities contribute to the development of the problem.

Healthy or not, adults do sleep less when they become older. And while you may think this would result in them putting their health at risk, guess again. In fact, they are less likely to feel tired as a study showed. The study was published in SLEEP, the official journal of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society.

The length of time that people slept varied in age. For example, elders aged 66 to 83 slept about 20 minutes less than middle-aged adults aged 40 to 55. The latter in turn slept 23 minutes less than young adults aged 20 to 30. So depending on which bracket you may be, these seem to be a common trend. And if you think taking a quick nap will make up for it, guess again. The participants made it through the day without a wink.

Chinese Medicine can be considered controversial yet amazing at times, depending on how you look at them. There are normally Chinese herbs that are for anything but mostly on a healthy aspect. Green Tea for one has been known as an anti-oxidant and from the looks of it, there is bound to be one Chinese medicine made for the sleep-deprived individuals.

There is actually an approach for Insomniacs with the “Calm the Shen”. “Shen” is best translated as the spirit of the person in a nonreligious sense. When evaluating Shen, the Chinese Medicine practitioner is looking for the emotional state and presence (or lack) of radiance, calm, and balance. Often with sleep disturbances, the patient will be experiencing patterns of stress, anxiety, or agitation. Chinese Medicine would call this “disturbed shen.”

Care to try it?

It seems that sleep loss is more serious that we thought. While we all know that chronic sleep loss does affect the memory, it seems that reflex action and other brain function can severely be affected as well. A study over at the Harvard Medical School can attest to that when they put nine volunteers on a specialized sleep-wake schedule made of 33 hours of wakefulness and 10 hours of sleep.

Using a series of tests, the researchers measured the subjects’ reflexes, motor skills, memory, decision making, and other brain functions. The results have yielded conclusions that may overturn commonly held misconceptions about sleep. Several weeks into the study, the subjects’ average reaction time at night had slowed from a quarter of a second to almost four seconds.
