Hi, my name is Shawn and I’m a photography nerd. Seriously, I take a lot of photos. I also love music, games, and pretty much anything happening in Seattle.

Slightly North of Tomorrow

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/slightlynorth" type="application/rss+xml" /><atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com" />

I really want this bass!

I really want this bass!

For the past 314 days I have been taking at least one picture per day as part of a project called “Year In Pictures.” This project is supposed to keep me thinking creatively and using a camera every day. I’m happy to say I haven’t missed a single day! It is also a lot of fun to look back through the year via these daily snapshots.

For 2010 I think I am going to continue the project, but I am going to change it up a little bit. One of the most challenging cameras I have to use is the one in my iPhone. So I have decided that for 2010 I will take one picture every day with my iPhone and edit it completely using applications available on the iPhone. This will give me a lit of options for look and feel, while making me think about composition since the iPhone doesn’t zoom.

I will officially start this new effort on January 1st 2010. Leading up to that I plan to recap some of my favorites from the last year as well as new ones as I take them. I’m not sure yet if I am going to switch over to an all-iPhone format for the remainder of this year though. We will see.

This is my first year doing it and I really enjoy it a lot more than the 365Days project where you take a self portrait every day for a year.

This photo was taken near the building I work at. These tiled stones are a new-ish park where a street used to be. The building owner convinced the city to close the street and turn it into a courtyard type thing. I love it in the fall because all of the oak trees around it drop their leaves on the stones. It always catches my eye.

I shot this while exploring the trails under the Deception Pass Bridge on Whidbey Island. It is backwards because the viewfinder of the Duaflex camera I use only has one mirror in it. Erin and I wanted to drop off some film at Camera Techs and decided to see if Sean wanted to join us for a cupcake or a drink or something. We really wanted to hang out with him before he heads out of town.

By the time we got to Ballard though, Camera Techs was closing. Oops! We headed to Hazelwood, a small bar for a drink instead. It was pretty cool and is owned by a guy we watched play bass in a band called Spiral Stairs a few nights before. He wasn’t in the bar today though. We finished our drinks and headed over to the Matador for some snacks. After that we went to Cupcake Royale for a cupcake and finally convinced Montine and John to join us. John had just arrived in town a few hours before (to stay!) and we wanted to welcome him home. :)

We all headed over to Hi-Life for some more food and drinks. Hi-Life was fun, but I was surprised at how empty the place was. It seems like it should be a busier bar in Ballard. After spening a couple of hours there, we headed back to the Matador for their happy hour and more nachos! We finally called it a night and all headed home. Welcome to Seattle John!!!

Today we are up early so we can get ready for the Seahawks vs Cardinals game at Qwest Field. Before that though we are stopping off at Motor (a small club in SoDo) for the “Spooky Craft Show” where Ego has some art for sale.

This camera shoots square format or 1/2 frame on standard 35mm films. It is a great way to get the feeling and characteristics of a medium format toy camera without most of the cost. I can’t wait to shoot more film with this camera!

This 6-part photo shows the process I went through to fix the neck weight problem with this bass guitar. I read a forum note about moving the top strap knob and decided to try it. While I was at it, I replaced the stock knobs with Straplock ones. It worked like a dream too. The bass is a lot more balanced and doesn’t suffer from neck diving anymore.

They are awesome. This photo is from a shoot I did for them so they could create a press kit. This shot is one of their favorites and makes me laugh every time I see it.

I’m using this photo as a test to see how I want to get selected photos to my Tumblr blog. I originally set it up to pull all photos from my Flickr stream via RRS feeds, but I think it is sending way too many over here. I want to hand pick only the best ones to feature on my blog. This way also gives me the ability to write a bit more about the photo.
