Where: Maui Community College_Pilina Building_MultiPurpose Room
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: PUBLIC INPUT SOUGHT FOR REDUCING GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

The public is invited to workshops to be held in all counties to review the work plans being considered by the Hawai’i Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Task Force to recommend to the legislature at year’s end.

“This task force was formed by statute to develop cost-effective measures for doing Hawai‘i’s part in reducing greenhouse gasses and their effect on climate change,” said Ted Liu, co-chair, Greenhouse Gas Emissions Task Force. “We are considering the likely effects of existing laws in addition to the many projects in the Hawai’i Clean Energy Initiative to meet the objective of the law.”

The task force was formed in 2007 by the legislature to mitigate the effects of global warming, which can cause problems such as sea level rise, shoreline erosion, saltwater intrusion into water supply; ocean acidification, reef breakdown; warmer ocean surfaces; crop and forest changes and loss of habitats; more severe storms and weather patterns; and health effects and disease.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can benefit the environmental and economic well-being of Hawai’i and supports the goals of the Hawai’i Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) by using technology and practical solutions to switch to a clean energy economy. HCEI seeks to lessen Hawai‘i’s dependency on imported oil, protect our environment, keep money in the local economy, and position Hawai‘i as a leader in innovation and utilizing indigenous renewable power.

State law calls for the reduction greenhouse gas emissions in Hawai‘i, caused mostly by oil and coal-based electricity generation and transportation to the 1990 levels or below by the year 2020.

The draft work plans, their assumptions, and other materials are available for review at www.hawaii.gov/dbedt/info/energy/greenhouse.

Workshops will be held on Maui, Kaua‘i, Big Island and O‘ahu. Dates and locations are:

For the past 12 years Tony has been the Director and a Professor of Residential Building Technology at Yavapai College. In the past four years his RBT program has been awarded five Gold National Association of Home Builder’s Awards for Green Building and Energy Efficiency in both the custom and affordable house categories-moderate climate. The program emphasizes applied building science principles incorporated into mainstream construction practices.
Tony is certified by the Energy and Environmental Building Association as a Master Builder, and as a National Trainer for the EEBA’s Houses That Work workshops. Upcountry Water: Issues and Solutions
Thursday, August 20th; 7-9pm at the Kula Community Center
Is it possible for Upcountry residents and farmers to be free of yearly drought restrictions? Will current planning address the need for current use and the water meter list? Will Interim In-stream Flow allocations increase the severity of drought seasons?
These questions will be the focus of the Kula Community Association’s General Meeting on Thursday, August 20, at the Kula Community Center from 7pm -9pm. We will learn about planning and strategies for increased water production and storage, how priorities are made for allocation of new water, how increased water supplies will be paid for and how it will affect water rates.
To help us get answers there will be a panel of expert speakers. They will include Representative Kyle Yamashita, Water Resources Chair Michael Victorino, Department of Water Supply Deputy Director Eric Yamashige, and the DWS’ planning consultant Carl Freedman.
The Kula Community Association seeks to promote the well-being of our upcountry community and welcomes all upcountry residents to our community meeting. It should be both educational and helpful! The usual great refreshments will be served. Call KCA Vice-Presdient Ron Montgomery at 283-9079 for more information.

When: Thu Aug 20, 2009
