This might be of particular interest to visitor/tourism/hospitality businesses in the area.

The Howardian Hills National Landscape is staging a free Astrotourism Workshop at 2pm on Wednesday 27 August. There are a few places still remaining. It will be held at the Yorkshire Arboretum.

We can still look up and enjoy some of England’s starriest skies. Besides being good for nature, they are also an economic asset for the tourism sector, especially in the shoulder seasons from September through to April. Just as people have long been attracted by our rolling landscape and historic sites, now seeing the stars offers another compelling reason to visit.

This event is perfect for hospitality businesses and you will get tips on making your business more dark sky-friendly, marketing stargazing opportunities, learn how others have successfully tapped into the astrotourism market and get practical advice on buying equipment.

Northern PowerGrid apologise for the inconvenience!

This is just a reminder that we should expect a planned power cut tomorrow Tuesday 19 August.

You will probably have received a letter from Northern Powergrid a couple of weeks ago, if you are to be affected.

Although the Slingsby power cut does not show on their website, Northern Powergrid have confirmed today that the planned cut is still scheduled to go ahead tomorrow between 9am and 4.30pm.  I am told 456 properties in our area will be affected. The power is being turned off for tree cutting work.

Remember to isolate sensitive equipment and think about your fridge, security alarm etc.

COUNCILLOR VACANCY

Join our team and become a Parish Councillor.
A vacancy has arisen for a Parish Councillor in Slingsby. No specific qualification is required to be a Councillor, indeed it is important that all sorts of people serve as Councillors to give good representation of the community. Training for new Councillors is also available to help assist with understanding the responsibilities of the role. It would be preferable to co-opt a Councillor from within the Parish.
If you would like to put yourself forward as a Parish Councillor please either get in touch with the clerk (slingsbypc@gmail.com) or the chair (fiona@beechtreefarm.net).
All candidates will be asked to give a short verbal statement about why they are interested in the role and what qualities they could bring to the team. The Parish Council will make their decision by a majority vote. 
What do Parish Councillors do? 
Slingsby, Fryton & South Holme Parish Council is made up of 7 voluntary Councillors, who meet bi-monthly to discuss and act on issues of importance to the local community. The Parish Council sets and monitors how a proportion of local taxes are spent in the parish, make comment on planning applications in the parish and consider projects to help maintain, improve or enhance the local area. Local Government is changing and Parish Councils are seeing an increase in the responsibilities and opportunities to influence decisions made that affect our local community.
The closing date for applications is Thursday 21st August 2025.

A message from Kate Giles:

On Thursday 17th July, the Cumbria Clock Company will remove the church clock to undertake its refurbishment. The clock will be taken out over the nave roof, so the path around church will be temporarily closed for health and safety reasons. 

We are so grateful to everyone who contributed to fundraising for this greatly valued feature of village life, especially the parish council for their generous donation towards its repair.

Malton Museum, the organisers of the Roman Festival, which takes place on Sunday 20 July 2025, are looking for volunteers to help deliver the day, doing things like stewarding, running family activities, welcoming visitors and checking tickets, car parking and more. They ask that volunteers spare 2 hours of their time, and in return you get to be part of a great team and enjoy free entry to the event for the rest of the day. Full training will be given.

An annual charity tractor run is organised from Sheriff Hutton each year and this year the tractors are scheduled to stop at the Grapes in Slingsby at 12 noon on Saturday 21 June. This year they are supporting York Against Cancer, who will be there with a collection bucket. There will be approximately 20 vintage tractors ranging from 75 to 30 years old.

Slingsby Local History Group is pleased to announce that the speaker for June is Ron Pickering who will give a talk on the Whitby to Pickering Railway. 

Since its beginnings as the Whitby to Pickering Railway to its current state as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, this line has played an enormous part in the social and commercial life of Eskdale and Newtondale. Stunning engineering feats, commercial mismanagement and dedicated, volunteer enthusiasm have all played a part in the development of the UK’s most visited Heritage Railway. Ron Pickering will draw on archival images and personal research to bring this extraordinary story to life.
