PHOTOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP

OCTOBER 14 - 16 2011

IN STUDIO AND ON LOCATION NASHVILLE, TN.

CLASS LIMITED TO 10 STUDENTS.

TUITION: $1200.00

REGISTER HERE

The Workshop

Jack Spencer has gained a reputation as one of the premier fine art photographers working today. His unique approach to making art is unparalleled and the wide range of his works is quite compelling. He has had over 100 solo exhibitions is some of the world's finest galleries and museums. His work has been collected in a great many private and museum collections worldwide.

In this workshop, Spencer will teach some of his techniques and methods of achieving photographs that have verve, poetry and the transference of creativity to paper. From the initial approach of taking a photograph, which Spencer considers to be the most important element of making an image, to making texture layers and coloring and also printing, glazing techniques and varnishing. There will be an emphasis on model photography, portraiture, landscape and flowers.

Jack would like to emphasize that he has no desire to turn others into versions of himself but to try and bring out the true artist that resides within each individual and their own means of self expression. He has no interest in being dogmatic in his lessons. To help students along in finding their own particular vision is his primary purpose.

Requirements:

Students are asked to bring along a laptop, preferably with Photoshop and Lightroom as well as a digital camera and a small hard drive as well as a good supply of cards and readers. All lab materials and models are included in the tuition.

Jack will be assisted by Jon Morgan, a Nashville photographer and artist of considerable skill.

About a year ago I wrote a blog about Southern Memories: Part One. Now I am knee deep in preparations for Southern Memories: Part Two. Part One was about places -- indoors and out. Southern Memories Part Two: The People is the second exhibition curated by John A. Bennette at The Whiskey Bonding Barn in Molena, Georgia as a part of SlowExposures 2011. The show will consist of a selection of portraits taken in the region by local and national artists. The community will also be invited to participate in this exhibition with a wall of historical images and snapshots provided by members of the community, with their notes and stories about life in the area and their families.

I am inviting all who read this blog -- if you live in the south -- to contribute to the wall of images. Please make an inexpensive copy of any old family photo. You may simply place a photo in a copy machine and create a copy for this show. I printed one on plain printer paper from a digital file. On the piece of paper you copy or print on, please write who is in the photo, where it was taken, and any other information about the family or photo. If you live in the area -- please drop off these family memories at A Novel Experience in Zebulon. If you do not live in the area -- email me for instructions on how to mail it in.

For a long time I have been restoring old family photos using Photoshop Elements -- this blog post showing the changes to a photo of my great grandfather is a good example of an old family portrait and what may be needed to help preserve it for future generations. I have given talks at The National Archives Southeast on this subject. The old photos I have are safely stored in protective sleeves in archival albums. The only old photos I use for display purposes are copies that I printed out myself. The digital files are also safe -- in case I, or someone else, would like a copy. As many long time readers know -- my Christmas tree is decorated with old family photos -- portraits of family and old homeplaces. I am hoping to put together a small handout for this exhibit with tips on how to preserve old photos. Time is precious these days -- I have a lot going on -- more about that on future blogs -- but preserving old family photos is important.

Artists participating in Southern Memories this year are:

Dave Anderson
Paul Conlan
Malgorzata Florkowska
The Portfolio review will be held on Saturday, September 17th, from 9 am until 3 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Concord, Georgia (across from Stricklands), in an intimate setting.

The fee is $350 which includes a 20 minute review by each of the five reviewers, lunch on Saturday and a Soiree on Friday night (Sept. 16). Participants are also invited to take part in the Portfolio Walk during the SlowExposures Ball (Saturday, Sept. 17th, $50 ticket to the Ball).

Reviewers will include Alex Novak, collector and photographer with 35 years of experience, Anna Walker-Skillman, an owner, director and curator of the Jackson Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, Kevin Miller, director of the Southeast Museum of Photography in Daytona Beach, Florida, Jerry Atnip, professional photographer and designer, and Brenda Massie, director of Hagedorn Foundation Gallery in Atlanta.

Participating in a Portfolio Review can be an eye opening experience. When fresh eyes look at your work, the threads that tie the work together (that you may not have seen) can become apparent. It is a great experience to meet with a reviewer in a one on one conversation over your body of work. During the down time and after the review there are opportunities to network and meet other photographers.

The Collector’s Afternoon on Friday, September 16th, and the Publishing Your Photography Book Workshop on September 17th will be held at New Hebron Baptist Church, 3 miles outside of Concord, Georgia.

The original Hebron Baptist Church was chartered in 1838. The New Hebron was chartered in 1907 and built in 1908. Its only bond with the modern age is when farm trucks and passenger cars pass by stirring up dust which quickly settles on the whitewashed facade and plain concrete porch and brick steps. It still uses the original hand-crafted pulpit and hand-hewn slat pews.

In its heyday of 1929 New Hebron had 99 members. The last member, Fred H. Johnson, Jr., died in 1998. New Hebron has been featured in two movies, Cold Sassy Tree and Mama Flora’s Family, and a feature film, The Wettest County, just completed filming in this beautiful old structure.

Self-Publishing Your Photography Book Workshop with Elizabeth Avedon
Saturday, September 17, 2011

9-3p, with lunch, R.F. Strickland Building, Concord, Georgia

There is a rich history of self-published authors including Edgar Allen Poe, Ernest Hemingway, Stephen King and Mark Twain. Now that artists are able to produce their own hardcover and softcover books online at a relatively low cost, self-publishing has become a popular alternative for photographers.

Self-Publishing Your Photography Book will cover the basic principles of designing your own photography book. Drawing on over thirty years of experience, Elizabeth will demonstrate the bones of a successful photography book including; interior design decisions, sequencing, typography (Serif vs Sans Serif) and cover design. We will explore what comprises good design from bad, creating a framework for the participant to build upon with their own book project, and briefly discuss the self-publishing companies available.

Each participant should bring 10, maximum of 12, related images for sequencing and discussion of design considerations. We will work together and as a group to evolve each of your individual projects and expression. Bring only inexpensive copies we can tack on the wall, no delicate final prints, 12 max and 1 photography book whose design or layout you admire (optional).

We will not cover technical questions (pdf-to-book workflow) or software questions.

Elizabeth Avedon has a rich, thirty-year history in photography and fine art. Collaborating with museums, publishing houses, advertising agencies, galleries and artists, she's received recognition for her curatorial work, exhibition design and publishing projects, including the retrospective exhibition and book, "Avedon: 1949 -1979" for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, and Dallas Museum of Fine Arts; Avedon's, "In the American West", for the Amon Carter Museum, the Corcoran Gallery, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. In addition, she has also worked with the Menil Collection and the Estate of Diane Arbus. In conjunction with Random House she co-published the series, "Elizabeth Avedon Editions/Vintage Contemporary Artists", working with distinguished art critics Donald Kuspit, Peter Schjeldahl and artists Eric Fischl, Francesco Clemente, Louise Bourgeois, and Robert Rauschenberg. Former Director of Photo-Eye Gallery, Santa Fe; Creative Director for The Gere Foundation; Art Director for Polo Ralph Lauren and Picture Editor for Polo.com Magazine; and a founder of Tibet House, New York; Elizabeth contributes regularly to the online magazine, La Lettre de la Photographie, as well as working as an independent curator and consultant, including the current exhibition "Return to the Roof of the World: Photographs by Nicholas Vreeland".

Workshop Only: $250

Book Workshop Package: $350*

Package for Two: (one ticket to Book Workshop included) $475*

Now in our ninth year, we invite photographers to submit their work.

SlowExposures is held during the last two weekends in September. Located an hour from Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson airport in the rural countryside of west central Georgia, the show is renowned for its intimate, relaxed environment where photographers and photography lovers from across the county gather to learn, share, and have fun. This year, our jurors Elisabeth Biondi and Peter Essick will join our 2011 faculty of professionals to offer cutting edge workshops, presentations, reviews and consultations.

Jurors:

Elisabeth Biondi has served as Visuals Director at The New Yorker magazine since 1996, helping to transform the look of the publication by collecting a group of impressive staff photographers and commissioning established masters as well as emerging talent, and utilizing portrait, fine art and documentary photography. Her earlier work at GEO, Stern and Vanity Fair has established her credentials as an accomplished, innovative professional in the field.

Peter Essick: For the past 25 years Peter has worked as a freelance photojournalist since studying photojournalism at the University of Missouri. Traveling to all seven continents in search of compelling pictures, he has produced 35 stories for National Geographic magazine. His story on story on nuclear waste (2002) won first prize at World Press Photos in Amsterdam.

Peter's images have been included in the Photography, Man and the Environment exhibit at Viterbo, Italy, the exhibit Thy Brothers’ Keeper at the Flint Institute of the Arts, Michigan and a one-man exhibit at Lumiere Gallery in Atlanta. In April 2005, Outdoor Photographer magazine featured his efforts to photograph the effects of global warming. These images were seen on The Oprah Show, This Morning with George Stephanopolis and in the movie, An Inconvenient Truth. His images have been in Time magazine’s Great Images of the 20th Century and the 100 Best Photographs of National Geographic. An exhibit of my landscape photographs was recently shown at Lumière Gallery in Atlanta.

Some would call this documentary but, as usual, there is a fluid quality that defies definition. With photographs we can reach across cultural gaps and speak a direct short hand, the difficult part is not to be too simplistic or to produce cliches. In Southern Memories, I wanted to be in the middle showing a world that was neither rich or poor. Small town America is seen as the place to be...there is that disconnect that says this is where only good things happen; you know your neighbor. I found photographs of a shrinking small town where the streets at night are overwhelmed by shadows and hopelessness in seeing another soul; light makes one feel vulnerable not safe and shadows add fear.

This is an Edward Hopper town when the last of the brave or unaware have made their way home to lock doors and hide. This is the town you want to drive through quickly. Using hi-contrast and German neo-expressionist lighting David Simonton has created images that reminded one of The Night of the Hunter and the stories my parents told. These are the small southern towns we hear about and dread.

John A Bennette

Home and church filled your life - that was a constant.

So there are a few of these images in the show, some of the most interesting are done by Ms Jane Robbins Kerr, a woman who took up photography later in life and burns with a passion to make pictures and to tell stories with them. I met this Georgia lady in New York when she came to see a show of Sylvia Plachy work, I heard that accent and turned around to see a ball of energy and, of course had to ask that question; where are you from? Since then I have become one of the people on her journey. Ms Kerr as four images in the exhibition the one that stands out are her groupings of churches and houses taken in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Small black and white photographs that make you aware of the basic language of structures. Simple, almost naive, as if a child had drew them. You recognize them; they reassure. If one was to look at grander building you would find these basics in some variantions it is a human thing.

Because all the pictures have the same viewpoint and central placement in the camera's frame, one feels that they fall into the tradition of Topography. This is a clean and intellectual approach to making photographs but by her arrangements of images Ms Kerr has created rhythm and magic.

Speaking of magic, when I was a child, Sunday was an all day event from Sunday school to evening service. This was not a delightful day for a child of serendipity. That is why Anderson Scott's image of an abandoned(?) church with the words "Thank God' scribbled on the back wall behind the altar brings a smile to me --makes me pause; is it a tribute to something happening, a soul saved, or the realization that church is over for the day? Photography allows you to question the moment and the details of life. Is this the interior of a church Jane R Kerr photograph on her travels through 3 southern states as she found her way home.

I hope once all the pictures of Southern Memories come together that people will try to read the stories created by these photographs being placed in a room together. To look backward to see the good and the bad of a time leaving us now as each moment we move forward.

John A.
