Still, this is a remarkable slice of Americana, even as it doubles as a two-minute commercial. When you think about it, denim is one of a handful of truly American-invented works of art. It’s right up there with Jazz as a middle finger to the rest of the world as a testament to American’s individualistic greatness.
It works as an enjoyable short from start to finish, but. But. Harumph — yes, it seems like the trailer is largely “inspired” by a 2010 animated short by Neil Wrischnik.

Why haven’t you been able to 100% cut the cable cord and rely solely on internet to deliver your TV entertainment? The answer should be obvious.

Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Time Warner Cable has been using its negotiating muscles to keep TV networks from licensing content to Apple and others. An industry insider who declined to be named confirmed this account in a conversation with GigaOM, saying that the company has been aggressively pushing for these kinds of clauses in its recent contract negotiations.

At the center of the dispute are so-called virtual cable operators — companies that operate pay TV services without having any physical infrastructure of their own. Instead of using their own satellites, cables or phone networks to get TV signals to the consumers, virtual operators would simply stream their programming over the internet.

This is a story as old as time itself. Rather than adapt to the times and use technology to its advantage, big companies would rather obfuscate progress by any means necessary.

Isolated human genes may not be patented, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Thursday. The case concerned patents held by Myriad Genetics, a Utah company, on genes that correlate with increased risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

The patents were challenged by scientists and doctors who said their research and ability to help patients had been frustrated. The particular genes at issue received public attention after the actress Angelina Jolie revealed in May that she had had a preventive double mastectomy after learning that she had inherited a faulty copy of a gene that put her at high risk for breast cancer.

The price of the test, often more than $3,000, was partly a product of Myriad’s patent, putting it out of reach for some women. The company filed patent infringement suits against others who conducted testing based on the gene. The price of the test is expected to fall because of Thursday’s decision.

The court’s ruling will also shape the course of scientific research and medical testing in other fields, and it may alter the willingness of businesses to invest in the expensive work of isolating and understanding genetic material.

Does this mean homosexual women aren’t horny? Have gay men already learned to cope with the reality of homosexual men’s horniness? I’m confused.

When Kanye West sits down to spill his guts with the New York Times for a massive in-depth interview it is impossible to block quote. You can’t do it justice. The whole thing is a must read. But, fuck it, let’s give you a taste:

I think what Kanye West is going to mean is something similar to what Steve Jobs means. I am undoubtedly, you know, Steve of Internet, downtown, fashion, culture. Period. By a long jump. I honestly feel that because Steve has passed, you know, it’s like when Biggie passed and Jay-Z was allowed to become Jay-Z.

I’ve been connected to the most culturally important albums of the past four years, the most influential artists of the past ten years. You have like, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, Henry Ford, Howard Hughes, Nicolas Ghesquière, Anna Wintour, David Stern.

I think that’s a responsibility that I have, to push possibilities, to show people: “This is the level that things could be at.” So when you get something that has the name Kanye West on it, it’s supposed to be pushing the furthest possibilities. I will be the leader of a company that ends up being worth billions of dollars, because I got the answers. I understand culture. I am the nucleus.

It’s like the Grand Canyon of interviews: you expect greatness and Yeezus delivers above and beyond that promise. Nuggets of hilarious pomposity raining down like dollar bills at a strip club, and yet, it’s insightful, riveting, and ultimately revealing. Especially the stuff about making Christmas presents:

But the passion is for humanity. The passion is for people. The passion is for the 18-year-old version of myself. The passion is for the kids at my shows. I need to do more. I need to be able to give people more of what they want that currently is behind a glass. I don’t believe that it’s luxury to go into a store and not be able to afford something. I believe luxury is to be able to go into a store and be able to afford something.

I sat down with a clothing guy that I won’t mention, but hopefully if he reads this article, he knows it’s him and knows that out of respect, I didn’t mention his name: this guy, he questioned me before I left his office:, “If you’ve done this, this, and this, why haven’t you gone further in fashion?” And I say, “I’m learning.” But ultimately, this guy that was talking to me doesn’t make Christmas presents, meaning that nobody was asking for his [stuff] as a Christmas present. If you don’t make Christmas presents, meaning making something that’s so emotionally connected to people, don’t talk to me.

That’s a good lesson for every person and company. Make more Christmas presents.

IBM has made a stop-motion film—A Boy and His Atom—using individual atoms as pixels, in what Guinness has acknowledged is the world’s smallest movie. You can read more about it at Ars Technica and The Verge, but suffice it to say your mind should be blown away when you consider IBM made a short movie by manipulating individual atoms through a scanning tunneling microscope, captured each image, and magnified them to over 100 million times its actual size.

Last year, PBS Digital Studios and melodysheep created the viral sensation when it auto-tuned everybody’s favorite neighbor featuring a panoply of auto-tuned wisdom. The “Garden of Your Mind” video was the first time it became evident that PBS was one of the few old media properties that truly understood how to generate content for the Internet without drastically changing what it does best.

Now, almost one year to the date since the release of “Garden of Your Mind,” PBS Digital Studios is releasing a second remix called “Sing Together.” The video features clips of Mr. Rogers talking to children about the beauty of music.

“Hot Dog & the City” by uji films shows 20 deliciously embellished hot dogs and the city they hail from in just 90 seconds. It was created as an Summer 2013 ad campaign for Applegate brand organic and natural meats.

If I’m being honest, I would eat the shit out of any of these hotdogs. Certainly, the Chicago dog is a favorite, but I never realized there were so many regional hot dog styles and they all look ridiculously tasty.

And now I’m all like,

AND THEN I’M REALLY LIKE,

June 21, 2013 – MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (The prequel to MONSTERS INC. I wasn’t excited for this but I am hearing some really great and surprising things from the screenings that have already taken place.)

November 27, 2013 – FROZEN (This is a Disney Animation release and sounds like it is going to be a little more classical with it being based on a fairy tale, but I would expect it to fall in line with the tone of TANGLED.)

May 30, 2014 – THE GOOD DINOSAUR (This is UP co-director Bob Peterson’s first solo film and Pixar is keeping this one a secret so not a whole lot is known about the plot yet.)

November 7, 2014 – BIG HERO 6 (This is Disney’s first Marvel based animated film, which is pretty exciting news.)

June 19, 2015 – INSIDE OUT (This is Pete Doctor’s next Pixar film and all we know is that it will take place inside the mind of a little girl)

November 25, 2015 – FINDING DORY (Pixar’s sequel to FINDING NEMO. Disney is going to have THE AVENGERS 2, STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and FINDING DORY in the same year! Start counting the money now.)

You should probably buy your Disney stock now (currently trading at $66 per share) and hold onto to sell until after 2015. Should they just be printing money now?

For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly fucking great. This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again.
Superhero shows have rarely, if ever, worked on the small screen. Yes, there are exceptions — like Smallville and Arrow to name two — and great shows like Buffy and Angel that are pretty much superhero in nature even if they aren’t technically defined as such. That’s why we’re cautious optimistic about NBC’s upcoming fall drama ‘Believe’.

J.J. Abrams is producing the show, with some involvement from director Alfonso Cuarón, though it’s likely neither of them will be that involved as the series progresses. ‘Believe’ will get a Sunday night slot on NBC after the end of the football season.

The trailer offers a solid look at the show’s main plot and my guess is each week will feature a new adventure for the little girl to save a person, while the B-plot involves most of the over-arching mythology/central mystery of the show.
What I love is that each has become the modern day equivalent of Consumer Reports. Whenever I need to buy something I tend to check out the Wirecutter first and more often than not go with their recommended product. So far, based on the products I own around the home, Sweethome will fill the same role for me.

So, CNN has partnered with BuzzFeed for a new YouTube channel, and the first video is narrated by Ze Frank. Perhaps most incredibly this is neither a supercut or a top ten list, but rather an examination of why rescue moments on TV capture people’s attention.

For some reason, this partnership reminded me of a funny (but unrelated) quip Jason Kottke made last week: “This is how Millennials watch TV, BTW…it’s all animated GIFs with YouTube video soundtracks. Civilization is gonna be juuuuuuust fine.”

If either of those paragraphs makes 100% sense to you, and you’re not offended, congratulations you spend too much time on the Internet much like ourselves. Yay!

The way [Henry] Markram sees it, technology has finally caught up with the dream of AI: Computers are finally growing sophisticated enough to tackle the massive data problem that is the human brain. But not everyone is so optimistic. “There are too many things we don’t yet know,” says Caltech professor Christof Koch, chief scientific officer at one of neuroscience’s biggest data producers, the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle. “The roundworm has exactly 302 neurons, and we still have no frigging idea how this animal works.” Yet over the past couple of decades, Markram’s sheer persistence has garnered the respect of people like Nobel Prize–winning neuroscientist Torsten Wiesel and Sun Microsystems cofounder Andy Bechtolsheim. He has impressed leading figures in biology, neuroscience, and computing, who believe his initiative is important even if they consider some of his ultimate goals unrealistic.

Markram has earned that support on the strength of his work at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, where he and a group of 15 postdocs have been taking a first stab at realizing his grand vision—simulating the behavior of a million-neuron portion of the rat neocortex. They’ve broken new ground on everything from the expression of individual rat genes to the organizing principles of the animal’s brain. And the team has not only published some of that data in peer-reviewed journals but also integrated it into a cohesive model so it can be simulated on an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer.

The big question is whether these methods can scale. There’s no guarantee that Markram will be able to build out the rest of the rat brain, let alone the vastly more complex human brain. And if he can, nobody knows whether even the most faithful model will behave like a real brain—that if you build it, it will think. For all his bravado, Markram can’t answer that question. “But the only way you can find out is by building it,” he says, “and just building a brain is an incredible biological discovery process.” This is too big a job for just one lab, so Markram envisions an estimated 6,000 researchers around the world funneling data into his model. His role will be that of prophet, the sort of futurist who presents worthy goals too speculative for most scientists to countenance and then backs them up with a master plan that makes the nearly impossible appear perfectly plausible.

Tom Hawking’s list of 50 albums everyone needs to own, with the caveat that he selected one album per year from 1963-2013 is the rarest of lists.

It’s both a comprehensive musical overview of the last half century, touching on many necessary albums and cross-polluting plenty of genres, but it’s also one that is well argued and opens the door for alternative possibilities.

Plus, there are a few nice surprises sprinkled in, especially in the aughts. That’s a hard decade to select because we don’t have the time and retrospectiveness (is that even a word?) to select each year’s defining record. But, Hawking does an admirable job.

In many ways his list is doubly hard since he is selecting records that are not only musically important, but also historically and culturally important as well.

Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away yesterday afternoon from bile duct cancer. He was 74.

The quasi-Baroque introduction Mr. Manzarek brought to the Doors’ 1967 single “Light My Fire“ — a song primarily written by Mr. Krieger — helped make it a million-seller. Along with classical music, Mr. Manzarek also drew on jazz, R&B, cabaret and ragtime. His main instrument was the Vox Continental electric organ, which he claimed to have chosen, Mr. Vitorino said, because it was “easy to carry.”

The Doors’ four-man lineup did not include a bass player; onstage, Mr. Manzarek supplied the bass lines with his left hand, using a Fender Rhodes piano bass, though the band’s studio recordings often added a bassist.

Mr. Densmore said, via e-mail: “There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison’s words. Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of. I will miss my musical brother.”

After Mr. Morrison’s death, Mr. Manzarek strove to keep the Doors together, led his own bands and continued to influence the Los Angeles underground. He produced “Los Angeles,” the 1980 debut album by the leading Southern California punk band X. But he also kept returning to the music of the Doors, rejoining Mr. Krieger in 2002 in a band whose name became the subject of a long legal battle with Mr. Densmore over use of the Doors’ name. Manzarek-Krieger, as the band was finally named, had more dates booked this year, Mr. Vitorino said.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,“ Mr. Krieger said in a statement. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.“

Above is one of best examples of Manzarek’s talent in both signing and piano playing. The Doors were one of the first bands I fell for hard and most of that can be attributed to the playing of Manzarek, Krieger, and Densmore. While Morrison could often be ponderous and insufferable, those three had serious musical chops and complimented one another’s unique styles really well.

Tumblr gets its exit strategy without worrying about how to actually make money and Yahoo gets the youth street cred it was sorely lacking.

The big question that is yet unanswered is whether Yahoo will muck this up like most of its acquisitions or can they treat Tumblr similar to how Facebook has treated Instagram? If it’s more like the latter, then this will be a good thing for both.

Time will tell.

Update: It’s official because Marissa Mayer just posted that clever GIF on her, you guessed it, personal tumblr announcing the deal. It’s actually pretty charming.

We’ll save you from jumping over to EW, because they were nice enough to lay it all out in a ten-page slideshow. Fuckers.

Anyway: Ant-Man is definitely happening with Edgar Wright attached to direct; Doctor Strange is one of the “prime candidates” to get his own franchise; there’s a good chance we’ll see Iron Man 4 but Marvel said the character might be recast depending on RDJ; the rest of their report is basically a “no comment” for things like Hulk, Inhumans, or Black Panther or “not working on it but would love to” type of shit for Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Runaways.

So, good sleuthing EW. You really nailed that exclusive.
