With the increasing number of people looking to explore blogging as a potential source of income blogging networks are becoming a great place for beginners to explore blogging and earn a little money while they figure out both the content and technical aspects of blogging.

The benefits are that you get an experienced person who will review your work before it goes live, they will give you feedback and show you how to get more out of your content. The network handles all the technical things like Search Engine Optimization, platform choice, theme choice and ad management.

What all this means is that the beginning blogger gets to focus on producing quality content and that is the key to building a successful blog when they are ready to go out on their own.

Finding Your Competitors Inbound Links

You are unlikely to be the only blog in your particular niche, unless you have managed to corner such a narrow market that no one else writes in the space. So assuming you have competitor blogs in your space wouldn’t it be nice to know who links to them ?

Why, you might ask would you want to know who was linking to your competitors blog? It’s important because if they are getting valuable inbound links that will positively impact their google page rank and of course drive traffic to them.

Once you know where their inbound links are coming from you can start to work on getting the same sites to link to you. So how do you get that information?

Use Yahoo as your search tool and the little known “linkdomain” command to reveal this information. It is used in the following format:

linkdomain:website address

For example if I want to see all the sites linking to this one I would type linkdomain:SlyVisions.com

The drawback to that is it will show all referring links, including internal ones, to remove the internal links we simply add -SlyVisions.com at the end, so we have linkdomain:SlyVisions.com -SlyVisions.com

Using Affiliate Links Without Annoying Readers

Simply scattering links throughout your site to various Affiliate sites, products or services is not the best way to get your revenue up. Just because there is a link doesn’t mean people will click it. Think about your own online behavior, what makes you click a link?

If it is a product that you are linking to then find out as much about the product as you can, the same goes for a service. Do your research, then include the links in a post on that topic, maybe even compare it to a competitor and tell your readers why you prefer the one you are linking to.

This type of post will achieve two things, firstly it is more engaging for your readers and it provides them with useful information. Secondly, in providing them with good information you are increasing your own authority in the niche, which will make you a more trusted source, which will increase your readers. Increasing your readers means that more people will see the link and therefore more people will click it, increasing your chances of revenue.

Having decided to join an Affiliate marketing program to generate additional revenue, the next step is to decide which program you are going to join. There are two main factors in deciding which program is going to work best for you.

Firstly, topic - does the product or service fit with your blogs niche. If you are blogging about pet care then including links to tech products is probably not going to generate much in the way of clicks and therefore is not going to earn you much money.

Secondly, popularity - it seems to basic to mention but it is surprising at the number of people who wonder why their revenue from a program isnt higher - quite simply the product they are linking to isnt popular enough. Do you research, if you know your niche well enough you will know what is likely to appeal to your readers and what they are likely to be interested enough in buying.

Affiliate Marketing - Definition

Most simply put, Affiliate marketing is the use of “affiliates” to market a product or service in return for a commission based on a pre-determined action. A good example of this is the Amazon Affiliate program, Amazon was one of the pioneers of this form of marketing. Placing a link from your website or newsletter to a product on the amazon site as part of the program is the first step. When a reader clicks the link and takes the pre-agreed action, buying, signing up or even just reading, then you are paid a commission.

Affiliate Marketing has come a long way since its inception and the programs available are increasingly more sophisticated.

Setting A Calendar

As part of his 31 days to a better blog series, Darren Rowse encouraged the participants to create a blogging schedule. I think this is a particularly excellent idea. I have a couple of reasons to believe this will actually help any blogger.

Firstly, committing something to paper or in this case to an electronic calendar makes it more real, it creates a more permanent record in your memory. Secondly, by actually organizing your blogging activity it becomes less daunting and you are more likely to complete all the tasks that form a good blogging business.

Take a look at Darren’s proposed schedule and see for yourself how it could help your blog. Bear in mind that there is no one schedule that works for all blogs, and only you can really determine the frequency and number of posts that works for your blog.

WordPress To Go

The popularity of the iPhone continues to grow, while I am personally not a fan of it, I recognize that it has gained global acceptance and right now is the number one touchscreen phone in the world. One of the things that has given it such a lead in the world is the variety of applications that are available for it.

One that cannot be ignored is the Wordpress application. This application allows full access to your Wordpress blog. While this might seem a little overkill, after all the iPhone screen isnt that big why would you want to blog from such a small screen.

However, for certain types of blog, the iPhone and for that matter other smart phones make the perfect blogging tool. if you are a blogger writing about public events for example, the fact that it has a camera built in and therefore allows you to not only write about an event but also take and upload pictures to the post really does mean that blogging on the go is here.

With the latest release of the iPhone having video, I can see the move toward mobile blogging gaining real momentum.

Why do I lose readers? This is a question that I get asked a lot, especially by new bloggers who are obsessed with their stats. This focus on blog stats and the feeling that somehow a blogger has driven away a reader or group of readers is of course a classic blogger mistake.

It assumes that you can control your readers and of course you can’t, accepting that some posts will get a lot of readers and some will not. The most important influence that any blogger can exert over their readers is the quality of their posts.

Providing consistently high quality blog posts will, in the end attract more readers than it puts off. That said you will find that readers lose interest, obtain what they need from your writing and move on to other sources.

My advice is don’t worry about daily numbers, or even monthly ones, watch the overall trend, as long as that is going in the right direction, keep doing what you are doing.
