Wright Mustangs completed a perfect baseball season with a 4-1 win over the Huntingtown Hurricanes in the 3A championship game Saturday night at Ripken Stadium.

Taking advantage of an early Huntingtown (20-5) error, Wright scored its first run on an infield grounder in the top of the first. In the third, again taking advantage of a couple of Huntingtown miscues, the Mustangs added two more runs to increase the lead to 3-0 and give more than enough cushion to Georgia Tech-bound pitcher Brad Markey.

Through five innings, Markey allowed just two runners on base – one base hit and one walk. In the bottom of the sixth, Huntingtown’s bats finally came alive with two outs as Joe Karbowsky, Brian Warner and Chris Gaines put together consecutive singles. Gaines’ base knock to right drove home Karbowsky with the Hurricanes’ first run, but Warner was cut down attempting to advance to third to kill the rally. Markey then worked through a scoreless seventh to nail down the first state title in Wright program history. The Mustangs finished the year 23-0.

Markey allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out seven.

Matt Beyer started for Huntingtown and worked six innings. The Hurricanes ace surrendered four runs — three unearned — on six hits, walked two and struck out seven. Joey Strain came on to work a scoreless seventh.

The runner-up finish was the second for the Hurricanes in the last five years. Huntingtown also reached the 2006 state final.

Taylor Stadium as the two-time, defending champions. They didn’t wait long to let everybody know the number of consecutive championships was going to grow to three.

Northern scored 10 first-inning runs to deliver the early knockout blow to the Charles Milton Wright Mustangs in what ended an 11-0 Patriots win. Junior pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser allowed two hits, walked none and struck out nine in earning her third state-championship win in as many seasons.

Schmeiser also fueled the offense, going 3 for 3 and coming up just a homer short of a cycle. The Patriots banged out 10 hits, and did not make an out in the first until the ninth batter came to the plate.

The win marks Northern’s seventh state championship, now the most of any SMAC programs.

The regional crown was the third in the row for Northern, which now sets its sights on claiming a third straight 3A state championship.

Northern (22-1) scored a run in the top of the first to take the early lead, but Huntingtown (16-4) answered in the third when Jess Warner’s infield single scored Angela Sita from second.

Kaitlyn Schmeiser limited Huntingtown to five hits, and logged eight strikeouts on the day. Northern advances to play 3A West champ Blake (15-3) in the state semifinals Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bachman Park in Glen Burnie.

In another Huntingtown-Northern matchup on Friday, the Hurricanes made quick work of the Patriots in an 11-1 drubbing in the 3A South baseball final. Huntingtown starting pitcher Matt Beyer twice worked out of bases-loaded situations during his five innings on the bump. The Hurricanes’ offense exploded for nine runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run homer by Chris Gaines.

The win earned Huntingtown its first regional title since 2007, and third in the last five years to go along with three SMAC championships over that span. The Hurricanes are scheduled to play 3A West champion Quince Orchard Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Sknerski also picked up the win on the mound, going three scoreless innings after relieving starter Donnie Holtzclaw to begin the 10th inning. Holtzclaw went nine innings and threw 117 pitches with 80 going for strikes.

Glenelg scored a run in the top of the first, but Patuxent provided a quick answer with Jeffrey Morgan’s lead-off home run in the bottom half. Holtzclaw then singled and later scored when Cofod’s single to left was misplayed and rolled out towards the fence. The Panthers tacked on another run in the second when Darius Jones doubled and scored on Morgan’s RBI single.

Glenelg battled back for two in the third, then took the lead in the fourth when Cody Ruben scooted home on a throwing error. Sknerski scored the tying run in the sixth after leading off with a single and then coming all the way around on a subsequent throwing error on a pick-off play.

After taking over on the mound, Sknerski pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the 11th. The Panthers had a runner thrown out at the plate to end the 11th, but scored the go-ahead run in the 12th after Cofod led off with a two-bagger, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Sknerski’s third hit of the game.
