I have exciting news to announce: as of September 8th, I will be a full-time student again. I’m going to be in an international Masters in Marketing program. Going back to school has long been in the works and I’m very excited about it.

I have a fairly non-traditional educational background. I dropped out of high school at age fifteen and took a few classes at a junior college. I wasn’t really motivated, however, so I stopped after a semester or two and worked at a collection of interesting yet eclectic jobs. When I was 23 I decided I was ready to go back to school and so I applied to, and was accepted at, my alma mater. That led me to France, through their study abroad program, so it was a great choice in more ways than one. I graduated summa cum laude with a BA in French three years later and with a staggering amount of student loan debt. I then got my certificate in teaching ESL (and about halfway through a Masters in TESL) as I knew I was coming to France.

The funny thing about American BAs in French? They’re not worth very much here. And the French are very big on having the right degree from the right school in order to get a job. They’re also not fond of people resetting their course in mid route, so about the only thing I’m qualified to do here is teach English as a Second Language.

Luckily I enjoy teaching, I’m good at it and there are a plethora of jobs. But after seven years, I’m feeling a bit done. So I found a good school and a good program that was interesting to me and started trying to figure out a way to finance it.

There is a program in France called the FONGECIF. That stands for the Fond de Gestion de Congé Individuel de Formation or, in plain English, the Individual Training Leave Fund. As an employee in the private sector I have payroll deductions to this fund, as does my employer. This fund then subsidizes people who wish to take a leave from their jobs and go back to school, either to further or to change their career. You have to apply for it, of course, and your request is not automatically accepted.

I just found out that mine was. The FONGECIF will pay 41% of my salary during the next school year (until June 2009) and 50% of the tuition. They will only pay 41% of my salary because it they only reimburse the employer for the time I am actually in school, which they have calculated at 41% of a 35 work week. Theoretically I could work the other 59% of the time, but you and I know that graduate school takes up a lot more time than 41%. Basically I will be taking a 59% pay cut. This will be offset partly by the fact that I can now put my student loans into deferment and so will effectively gain €400 a month. As for the other 50% of the tuition, we are taking out a low interest student loan (2.3%) that will kick in in September 2009. It’s not the ideal situation- we were hoping that the FONGECIF would pay 90% of the tuition- but it works.

So there you have it, the exciting news of the week. I will be writing more about the challenges, fiscal and familial, of going back to school. I’ll also be reducing my posting schedule to three times a week, plus a link love edition on Saturdays and a Six Month Recap edition on Sundays, but that won’t take effect until September.

Until then, what about you? Have you gone back to school after a break? What’s it like? What were the biggest challenges? Was there anything that was easier than expected? And finally, how did you finance it?

an Apple a Day It keeps the doctor away, we all know that. But fresh fruits and vegetables are some of the most frugal foods you can find in terms of the nutrition:cost ratio. Sure, a bag of oreos might cost less than five pounds of apples (but probably not), but by choosing a piece of fruit as a snack you save calories and get vitamins. So in the end, it really does keep the doctor away, and with the exorbitant cost of health care in the United States, that’s not a bad thing.

Budgets Being frugal means being on top of your money. What better way to keep on top of your money than by using a budget? In fact, for me it’s the only way, as the ’spend until we have nothing left’ plan doesn’t really seem to work. Pear Budget, excel sheets, pen and paper, the envelope system… they will all work, if you use them.

Catnip Looking for a frugal toy for your cat? I’ve found that my three furry snobs reject out of paw the fancy balls and stuffed mice found at the pet store. What they go for most is some home grown weed… catnip of course! For the price of one small toy, get a kit that keeps on giving. And you’ll be decorating your home as well, two for the price of one. Think outside the box when it comes to pet toys; paper bags, cardboard boxes, marbles are all big fun for our three beasts.

Diapers I’m a big fan of cloth diapers, both for frugal and for economic reasons. But the diapers I’m referring to here aren’t for covering your baby’s butt… they’re for cleaning your toilets and floors. I’ve found that the really thick prefold diapers (the kind you have to fold and pin into shape on a baby) are perfect for cleaning and the more you use them, the more absorbent they are. They almost make cleaning toilets enjoyable. Almost. So, no more chemically impregnated throwaway wipes, use and reuse a diaper instead.

the Environment Have you noticed how green and frugal decisions tend to go hand in hand? Consume less? Frugal and green. Buy local food? Frugal and green. Drive shorter distances and less frequently? Frugal and green. Whether you make your decisions out of an ecological motive or an economic one, the end result is often the same.

Freecycle can be an excellent way to practice frugality. Looking for something in particular? Post a request on your local group’s site. Trying to get rid of something without paying to take it to the dump. Offer it to others. I’ve gotten pots and pans, laundry detergent, a baby crib and gotten rid of too many things to mention here.

Goodwill Thrift stores should also be known as treasure troves, as long as you only buy what you have use for. I find that if I go on a regular basis with a shopping list in mind of what I really need (not what I really want, and there is a difference) then I don’t buy too much. Clothes, books, household supplies: why buy new? Remember, as soon as you buy a ‘new’ item it becomes used. And by buying used you are often able to afford better quality than if it were new. A final added bonus is that often times proceeds from thrift stores support local charities either directly or indirectly.

Handy work Know how much plumbers charge? A lot, especially on Sunday evenings. Or how much does it cost to repaint a dog-chewed door… more than you want to know. Are your pants too long? The local going rate is €15 to have them hemmed, about fifteen minutes worth of work. Wouldn’t you like to save yourself €60 an hour? Handy work can come in very handy; if you know how to do it yourself you can save yourself a lot of money. Don’t know how to do it yourself? Check out Back to Basics.

ING or any other online savings and checking account are great ways to manage your money. I like mine because it’s not linked to my checking account, meaning that my savings are out of sight and out of mind. Sometimes, unfortunately, they’re a little too out of mind, when I forget to add to them, but automated transfers can solve that problem. Many online accounts allow you to create various sub accounts, meaning that you can see your emergency fund, new car fund, vacation account and down payment stash progress nicely.

the Joneses (and not keeping up with them) If there’s one way to shoot yourself in the foot, no matter what, it’s comparing yourselves to others. Sure, maybe your neighbors have a nice car and take a ton of long weekend trips, but how are they paying for it? You don’t know. If you really want to live a frugal life than you can only compare yourself to your goals and ambitions. Measure the progress you make against them, not the neighbors. Which leads me to…

Know your goals… and your limits Why are you frugal? What do you have or hope to gain? Is it paying off past debt, avoiding new debt, saving for a specific goal or for ethical and philosophical reasons? Knowing your goals will better help you to achieve them. On the other hand, you have to know your limits as well. As much as I hate the idea of spending money on eating out, I also know that I go crazy if I have to cook too many meals in a row.

Leftovers When planning and preparing a meal, make enough for leftovers. You’ve then cooked once, something that can be eaten two, three or more times as the case may be. You don’t have to eat it immediately either, that’s what freezers are for! Leftovers can be taken to work as the next day’s lunch, saving your spouse the need to buy a sandwich or starve.

Menu planning Whether you plan your menus before you go shopping or after, menu planning can be a valuable tool in your frugal toolkit. it helps you to use your food the most efficiently, with the least waste possible (I’ve heard that Americans throw away up to one third of the food they buy). And by knowing what you are going to make and eat for dinner you are better prepared to resist the siren’s call of the Golden Arches.

Networking I am a huge believer in the power of networking. It can help you in many ways, not the least of which is being frugal. If you know someone, or know someone who knows someone, then you have a personal relationship with that person. That relationship can help you get the things you need as long as you remember that networking is a two way street and a three step process: first you give, then you receive then you give back again.

Online checking Part of doing a budget and making it work is keeping up with your money. An online checking account can help immensely. Just log on every morning while sipping your morning coffee and log in the previous days’ expenses into your budget sheet. That’s what I do… theoretically at least!

My Points can be a great rewards program… a program that helps you earn gift cards in exchange for just a little bit of time. They send you emails and you earn points for reading them. I’ve earned enough points to be able to give away $30 in gift cards and I’m more than halfway towards another $10 Target card. How does this help you be frugal? Well you wouldn’t turn down $40 cash, would you?

Questions Unless you’re a born expert (and I know very few people who are) asking questions is the best way to get ahead in life. Want to learn how to cook so you don’t have to eat out as often? Ask someone who’s good in the kitchen. Looking for the best haircut at a decent price? Ask someone whose hairdo you love. Want to learn how to be frugal? Start leaving comments and asking lots of questions on your favorite blogs. Remember, you’ll never get anything if you don’t ask, and the worst someone can do is say no.

the second R Reduce Reuse Recycle are environmental keywords. But Reuse should be a frugal keyword as well. Reusing something in a way different from its intended purpose is a great way to save money and express your creativity.

Soap As I was cleaning my kitchen the other day, I realized that I didn’t have any ‘typical’ cleaning products on hand- nothing to scour, scrub or shine with, and what’s more, I hadn’t had any of those products for years. It’s not that I don’t clean my kitchen, of course I do, it’s that I use the basics: clean rags, a sponge, soap and water. (And of course vinegar, but there’s more on that below.) I don’t spend money on expensive cleaning products and I don’t have to either. I read an interesting tip a while back: when you finish washing the dishes and your sponge is still soapy, give a quick going over of the appliances or counters. Then toss the sponge in the dishwasher for cleaning.

TV Don’t go to the movies, or spend a lot of money in a club. Have a family movie night. Tivo a favorite film, make a bowl of popcorn and settle in for a frugal night together. Just don’t get sucked into the commercials. One of the things that most struck me when I first read The Tightwad Gazette was a pop quiz: when a new movie comes out you a) run out to see it right away, b) wait six months to rent it on video or c) wait ten years to see it on network TV. I bet you can guess the correct (frugal) answer.

Unplug And when you’re finished watching the movie, turn the TV off- at the source. Unplugging appliances instead of merely turning them off can save a considerable amount of power and therefore money. The same thing goes for things like phone recharger or the computer. There are fancy plugs that allow you to disconnect all the accessories when you turn off one main object (the printer, scanner and stereo when you turn off the computer for example) but I go the low tech route and unplug it from the wall.

Vinegar Is there a better all purpose substance? You can use it to condition your hair, refresh the washing machine, dress a salad, unclog the sink (with a little baking soda), get the gunk out of the coffee pot, shine your floors, bake a cake… the list goes on and on. Good stuff that vinegar, and cheap too!

Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink. I remember as a child being able to drink my fill out of a public drinking fountain just about anywhere. And now they seem to be disappearing faster than you can say ‘Thirsty, thirsty’! Carrying a refillable bottle with you, be it made of glass or aluminum, is still cheaper than buying a drink on the go. It’s better for you too, and kinder to the environment. Not to mention that people tend to be more irrational when they’re hungry or thirsty; swigging water in the aisles at Target may just help those impulse buys from landing in the cart.

eXpensive It’s not necessarily a bad thing when something costs a lot of money, as long as you can afford it, buying it fits in with your goals and it is a good value for the money.

whY are you on this frugal journey? You know your goals and you know your limits, but do you know your motives? Why are you saving to buy a house? Is it because you’ve always dreamed of having a home of your own, or is it because that’s what you’re supposed to do when you’re thirty and married?

Zzzzs Getting your sleep can help keep you sane. Anyone with a colicky or teething baby can attest to that. And just as people can avoid making irrational decisions by staying hydrated, staying well-rested helps as well. Plus, is there a more frugal activity than catching some ZZZs between your sheets?

Now you know my ABCs. Won’t you try and sing with me? What can you add to the list?

Welcome! I’m Kelly and I’m thrilled to be hosting the 69th Carnival of Money Stories. Maybe thrilled is too strong a word… nope, actually it’s not! Although I’m American, I’ve lived in France for eight years, so I thought we’d take a tour of some of my favorite regions in France while reading the great stories on hand today.

I’ve never lived anywhere else in France; I find this city suits me well. You could think of Grenoble as the heart of France’s Silicon Valley. It’s a medium-size university town at the foot of the French Alps. There aren’t a lot of tourists here, but it’s a very outdoorsy place. One of the most popular sports is mountain-climbing. What a surprise, huh?

There are farmers’ markets every day of the week in most cities in France; they’re great ways to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. Our local Wednesday market has a baker, a butcher and a cheese maker as well (a candlestick maker would have been too good, non?).

As a follow-up to my post Five Things It’s OK To Spend a Little More On, I decided to take a look at some things that you shouldn’t spend too much money on.

Kids Toys and Clothes

As any new parent quickly learns, babies only really cycle between five or six outfits that are the most comfortable and easiest to put on. The great majority of the tiny, adorable ensembles received at the baby shower or handed down from older cousins are worn a handful of times. It’s no different as kids grow either. My boys, although they are only five and four, already have definite preferences for what they wear, and it usually ends up being the same five or six tee-shirts with the same five or six shorts.

You don’t need to have a lot of clothes and you don’t need to spend lots of money on them either. Many of the clothes my kids wear are hand-me-downs. I have had to buy some, as each of my children was born in a different season, but I shop primarily at the thrift store. When I do buy something new, it’s on sale. I don’t think I’ve ever paid full price for their clothes, only shoes. Speaking of shoes, we don’t spend a lot of money on those either. I go to the French equivalent of REI and buy good quality tennis shoes or sports sandals. At the most I pay €15, but I think it’s important for them to have new shoes.

Kids toys are another area where you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have a lot of satisfaction. Most kids go through a phase where they’re happiest playing with the box the toy came in, and that stage of creativity and imagination can continue a long time. Some recycled scrap paper, a few pens, some thread, a ball, a spoon… none of these costs very much money, but the entertainment factor is huge.

Cars

We have two cars, both older models. We bought them the wrong way; by figuring out what car payment we could afford and then looking at how much that gave us total. At least the monthly payments are reasonable. In fact, the only reason we have a car loan for our larger ‘family car’ is because we used the lower interest car loan to pay off a large chunk of our revolving line of credit. Otherwise we would been able to pay for it with the proceeds from selling the old one.

I firmly believe in buying a good quality car, that is several years old, without a lot of bells and whistles, and then taking care of it and driving it for a long time. Some people even, drive their cars for a very long time. We anticipate having our cars until we move, maybe even after if we move within Europe. Remember, as soon as you drive a new car off the lot it turns into a used car- without the used car price. Why not let someone else take the loss for you?

Furniture

I like decorating and changing the look of my house; I’m addicted to (passed on copies of) Martha Stewart, Good Housekeeping and the rest. But there’s no way my budget can afford spending a lot on furniture or decorations.

Here’s where patience pays off. If you know what you are looking for, down to the make and model, then Ebay can be a great place to find furniture for low prices. It’s often in excellent quality, much better than you could find in a second-hand shop. Another great place is to look at Ikea’s bargain section. I found a cover for my Ebay couch there for 50% off. Now my €43 couch and its €35 cover look (and feel) just like its young, new €400 sibling for sale in the showroom.

A lick of paint and an hour or two spent in front of the sewing machine can help to transform a room. If you’re not a sewer or can’t stand painting, why not barter with a friend who does? For more great frugal decorating tips, check out this guest post from Lynnae of Being Frugal.

Organizing Supplies

Confession: I am an organizing junkie. (Proof can be seen here and here.) I love boxes and putting those boxes into smaller boxes and them stacking them on top of more boxes. My favorite magazine, which I can organizing porn for girls, is Real Simple. Why aren’t my kids able to put their own toys away?

Here’s a secret. Organizing supplies won’t make you organized. It’s the marketing strategy of all those (fabulous) stores to make you think that if you just buy this system then your house will be Real Simple cover ready. Of course it won’t; you have to change the way you think and work first.

When you are ready to organize, an expensive plastic box or wicker basket is nice, but a cardboard box nestled into a drawer as a divider works just as well. Think about what you already have in your house that you can re-purpose as an organizing aide. I used to cut off the legs of old pantyhose and hang them over the hinges on the back of a door as a place to store my wrapping paper.

Books

As much as I love organizing supplies, I love books even more. It’s not surprising that I want to buy them as cheaply as possible. Why are you buying the hardback copy as soon as it appears on the shelves? Exercise a little self-restraint and put yourself on the waiting list at the library. I used to do this when I lived in the States and it was like a treat when my turn rolled around. Often times, after waiting for 75 other people to have their turn, I had forgotten I had reserved the book.

Go to a used (independent) bookstore, or the local thrift store. Buy books at $.50 a piece. Then, send them on through BookMooch when you’re finished. Your house will be less cluttered and in turn you’ll earn points to mooch books from others.

Of course there are books that are dear friends that you want to pass on to children or read and reread over and over. It might be worth having a nicer copy for those special ones. But the latest schmaltzy novel? Probably not so much.

So there you have it. My recommendations for five things you should not spend too much money on. What are yours?

I didn’t participate in any carnivals this week. Instead I spent a whole lot of time discovering a lot of great blogs. So, in no particular order, here is the ‘absolutely nothing to so with personal finance and frugality‘ edition of Almost Frugal’s Carnivals, Festivals and Linklove post.

I’ve known about Plonkee for a while now, how could I not? But this week I sat down and really delved into her archives, and they’re full of great writing. Plonkee also writes a blog about atheism, which I find refreshing.

Plonkee had linked to a great post of Mrs Micah’s on the imposter syndrome. As someone who suffers from this herself, I really liked this take on it.

More insecurity rears its ugly head! I’ve been reading Mandajuice for a while now. Through her I’ve discovered Ask Moxie and The Pioneer Woman, so I know that when she mentions a blog I should go click on the link. Her recent post on making friends led me to this post on Schnzzfest, on making friends and insecurity and the in-crowd. It’s really interesting (and long) and if you’ve ever felt like the cool kids were laughing at you and you weren’t interesting enough to hang out with them (not that you wanted to of course, because you were above all that), you should go read it. I’m a naturally shy, reserved person (my family and friends are snorting with laughter now) and I’ve had to force myself to be outgoing in a number of uncomfortable situations. And it’s worth it, very much so.

Insecurity without jealousy is just, well, insecurity, so go read Loralee’s post. I’ve been jealous many a time. See above comments about the cool girls club, in fact. But again, it’s so not worth it (said in an authentic Valley girl accent, like the authentic Valley Girl that I am).

I found Crash Test Mommy by following one of those convoluted blog link paths that leads you far, far away from your original destination. You have to love a blog when their about page starts out with the song lyric “I’m a bitch”.

NxE has a list of the 50 most influential female bloggers, so if you have absolutely nothing else to do, go check that out.

Make and Takes is a fantastic craft and kids blog. Her recent idea on flash card rings is sheer genius and I wish I had thought of it first. Not to mention that she has a guest post on another blog I love, Simple Mom, so there’s double the pleasure.

Two different people sent me this article on small houses. Mine isn’t quite that small! I love the idea of living in small houses, and I’m not sure that we won’t intentionally look for one whenever it is that we move, wherever it is we’re moving.

So there you have it. No wonder, you say, that she’s fallen off the wagon! Back to more personal finance next week, starting (or peaking) on Tuesday when I host the Carnival of Money Stories! But quickly, before I go, one final post on frugality at The Simple Dollar. I think we’re going to start having more no-spend weekends in our family- they do a world of good.

Here’s the fourth giveaway to celebrate Almost Frugal! And no, I’m not giving away any kids, mine or yours, but rather some very cool kid stuff. If you’re not a kid yourself don’t worry! There will be a giveaway for some fun (and family-friendly) grown-up gifts next month.

Option 1: Play Corn Back at my previous site, I posted on some of the frugal things my kids enjoy. One of those things is Play Corn. I think this stuff is so incredibly cool: it’s creative, frugal and environmentally sound, all in one. As fas as I know this is not available in the US, so here’s your chance to win a box of 500 pellets (that’s not as overwhelming as you might think) of environmental fun.

Option 2: Kllycat’s Babycat Goods Store Credit I’m giving away $20 in store credit to my Etsy shop Kllycat’s Babycat Goods. You could get a diaper envelope and a wrap spoon holder. Or a baby blanket gift set. Your choice- $20 worth, and this includes shipping costs!

Option 3: A Kiddopotamus portable placemat in pink. This is a very cool placemat that turns any table into a clean eating surface for your baby. It sticks to a flat surface and rolls up for easy transport. Plus, it has a ’scoop catcher’ which catches all those little morsels of green beans or hot dog before they hit the floor- that much less apologizing you’ll have to do to the server at your favorite restaurant.

There are three ways to enter, and you can do all three! The first is by leaving a comment in this post, and telling me which item you would like to win. This earns you one chance in the drawing. Or subscribe to Almost Frugal’s feed by either RSS or by email, and email me the secret code you see at the bottom of the feed- this gets you two additional entries. (You don’t have to be a new subscriber to enter, just email me the code!) To get a fourth, fifth and sixth entry (three extra chances basically), post about this giveaway on your blog, and let me know about it by leaving a comment or sending me an email.

The contest begins July 18, 2008 at noon my time, and ends July 28, 2008 also at noon my time. It is open to people worldwide. The winner will be chosen randomly. Don’t miss out, enter now!

Wow! I am so impressed I can’t even say how impressed I am. Y’all really wanted that Target gift card, didn’t you?

We had 109 entries for the Target card giveaway, 57 entries for the Barnes and Noble card giveaway and 38 entries for the Bath and Body Works card giveaway. (I have to admit that, given a chance, I’d go for the big red circle card too). Some people took advantage of being able to enter multiple times through subscribing to the feed or posting links on their blogs and I thank them. I also want to thank everyone who took the time to enter by leaving a comment.

By far the best part about this giveaway was getting to discover new blogs. I visited each and everyone of your blogs, whether you posted about the contest or not, and I’ve discovered a ton of new reading material. Thanks a bunch- I know you were thinking that I wasn’t using my spare time efficiently enough…

Enough dithering, and on to the nitty gritty! Here’s how the contest worked. As each entry came in, be it in the comments section or by sending me an email, I recorded the email address on a numbered Word document. I then used Random.org to generate three separate winning numbers.

The winners are:

Target: Saving Diva from Saving Diva

Barnes and Noble: Chris from The Fabric Bolt

Bath and Body Works: Kristen from Frugality in the Making

Congratulations to our winners!

Now you might be wondering how I managed to get these three gift cards and if I spent money on them. I didn’t spend any money getting them, (almost) frugal diva that I am, because I earned them through MyPoints. I almost have enough points for another $10 giftcard… I smell another Target giveaway in the near future! (If you would like to join MyPoints, please ask me for a referral!)

Stayed tuned tomorrow, for another great giveaway!

Well, in some ways we’re doing OK on our budget (gas, groceries), in other ways we’re way over budget (discretionary spending from my husband’s bonus, for example).

Well, in some ways we’re doing OK on our budget (gas, groceries), in other ways we’re way over budget (discretionary spending from my husband’s bonus, for example). And I had said that we didn’t have any out of the ordinary expenses for this month, but I lied; we had a friend’s birthday party and swimming lessons to pay for.

I’ll spare you all the gory numbers until my budget wrap-up at the end of the month, but we can sum up the month so far by saying that as soon as we get a bit of extra money it just burns a great big hole in our budget’s pocket. This is definitely the biggest money issue we have and what I most need to work on.

What about you? How do you stick to your budget and not spend found money? Any tips?
