--------
Last year I met Lothar in my atelier and he told me about his project. He was looking for people who take care of a printshop he had built up in a school in Hamburg years ago. He wanted to move it to a new place, I don't remember what the problem with the school in Hamburg was but anyways: In summer he and students from Duesseldorf moved all the letters to their new home: the University of Applied Science in Duesseldorf. Lucky guys. They made a film to get their fellow students into letterpress. Have a look.

Mmh...
--------
Oh these maps. Sigh. I can't cut them all into little circles for my photobooks, especially with that little nice typography. The simple drawn constellations and the illustrations are talking to me: keep me, keep me. Now they're going on the wall. Maybe the beginning of a growing collection? (I have a few atlases and they all have a page like this...)
I am normally not interested in astronomy though we had an observatory on the roof of our school. But it seems two decades later I am hooked.

Hier entlang.
--------
This month's special sale is a bit different. It will be a deal. I need a certain amount of purchases til the deal can happen. I am very excited if this works out. The deal is about Monogram Letterpress Stationery, that was asked by a few people. Have a look in my shop (just in german, sorry.)

long s

--------
I finally managed to clean up one case of the four new ones, that I got back in December. Look what I've found. A long s and an old style german Eszett I guess.
--------
Happy new year to you! I start theses days with some fresh inspiration. Geometry is a never ending dose of inspiration to me, not to mention all the graphs, rulers or maths-figures in schoolbooks that I get excited about. The basic figures like circle, triangle or hexagon do it too. Here's what I bookmarked the last days:

--------
It's still busy here but I wanted to say hi real quick. I start preparing for my christmas show in Hanover this weekend, so if you are around I'll be happy to see you. I'll close all my online shops on Friday to finish all orders in time for Christmas and I am already in the mood for new projects 'cause I bought those wonderful letters from an old typesetter in Berlin the other week. Wood type and lead type including a bold italic Bodoni! Wohoo.

Das ist mein extrem leichter Kartenhalter to go.

That's my card display to go. I've built it from a paper coated foamboard, a special board for architects (I guess). It's very light material, so easy to carry it to a show by train or something. I plunged little hooks in it to hold the cards in place. You can do it easy by yourself.
It's now hanging on my door, but I made it actually for my table at the hello handmade show back in October. I had to put stuff behind it to provide it from falling over but anyways I was quite happy with it. I wrote some info with a white pencil on an overleft board, that looked nice too. Maybe an idea for you guys out there. Good luck with your christmas shows!

--------
This is how I start my day during the christmas season: Biking to the atelier and turning the heater on maximum as soon as I arrive. Printing orders, laying them on a table and picking the products from my boxes (if they're already pre-packed I am super happy).
Then I write little notes for each buyer, address the envelope and stick a stamp on it and oh if I don't have enough stamps at home I start complaining and line up in the long queue at the post office later the day.
Crazy christmas time. Unbelievable how long it takes to finish orders.

paper scraps

--------
It's here, advent – where is autumn gone? Time is running. I felt a bit christmassy last friday and did some stars from my paper scrap collection. Some have crop marks in pink from my last job. He he.
And I prepare the next special sale, hope it'll go in my shop this week. If you join the mailing list (right column) you'll get the news first. Have a great week in the meantime! xo

Weil A wie Anfang. Seufz. Büchlein im Shop.

--------
I wanted to print on the lighter beerpaper for a while. This paper is called wheat, as we Germans like to drink wheat beer. And the idea of printing cyan and magenta, which is seen quite often, was sitting in my mind also. Weeks ago my bookbinder moved and found some overleft blocks in a box. So here they are, 123 little notebooks, but just 122 will go into the shop. I keep one for myself.

Why do I picked the A, ah yes I remember the A is for beginning. In german. But to be honest it was the N for Notes what I first wanted, but that character hasn't such a nice shape in this type set. The type is called Reporter you may know it from the headlines of Fantomas or Pulp Fiction.
The little hand on the backside was contributed by Helmut and the slash is the only letter from my new 12pt Gill that I've printed so far. Just because my other sets do not provide any slash, same with the quotation marks, but that's another story... phew. Who told me typesetting is easy? Can't remember. Ha ha.
The notebook went in my Small Caps shop. Check back my etsy shoplater the day.
Cheers!
--------
Back in late September we translated the german words in our drawings into english and now I hold the published "hello Berlin" english edition in my hands. So cool. It's already available in my etsy Shop. Hooray!

Copenhagen

Kopenhagen.
--- And there you are, unable to pronounce the names of the most delicious bisquits you've ever eaten. You'll end up like me, blushing and repeating it times and times 'til the young danish girl points on the right one. Be tough, it's worth it.

--- We spent four days in Copenhagen biking through all the districts, went shopping, saw the beach, visited the Tivoli and hopped on a boat to see the canals. You'll find danish design everywhere. It's a great but expensive city. You'll pay nearly 6 Euro for a Cafe Latte.

--- So what can I tell you about that of beautiful cozy city? Different from us the Danish lift an arm to show the back group they slowdown their bike. And one has to tear off a number in bakeries. I couldn't find any cotton candy in the Tivoli garden, what a pity.

Cinnober. Daumen hoch.
-- For paper addicted visitors is Cinnober the place to go. A lovely little book- and paperstore in the center of Copenhagen. Besides that we visited many interior shops and they're really great. I like.

printing studio

Überall standen Holzplatten, einige unbearbeitet, andere schwarz vom Druck. Ich entdeckte eine Kniehebelpresse und viele Schnitzwerkzeuge. Und lauter schöne Drucke an den Wänden.
--- On saturday night I visited the printing studio from Miriam Zegrer. I spotted carving tools, japanese paper, a press and many wooden blocks, most of them black from ink.

--Miriam does wood cuts and demonstrated the japanese printing process. Instead of printing oil based ink onto dry paper the japanese wood blocks have to be wet and are printed with water based ink onto dampen japanese paper. A special tool set is required, there are several brushes, a rice paste and the so called baren, a disk to rub the back of the paper while printing.

-- I very like the light glazed colours of the japanese wood block prints. We recently had a great exhibition about Hokusai in Berlin and the questions from the audience during the demonstration at Miriam's printing studio proofed a growing interest in the traditional japanese technique. I have to get my hands on that too!

zines

-------
I bought me this zine in San Francisco. It's made by Art Noose. I love the concept, one has to fill out the book and send it back in exchange for a new one. I would have loved to buy more of these small amusing zines that are actually not very expensive.

Obviously zines are still around. I supposed they wouldn't stand against the e-mags but they do. Actually there were a few books about zines published in the last time and Berlin gets its first Zinefestival in November. I feel a strong need to catch up with the german zines and can't wait to take a workshop there. In the meantime here's a etsy treasury for some more inspiration.

Special Sale October

--------
Here we go. The so long awaited special sale with handprinted goods is online now. Products that doesn't go in my normal range or have little spots in print are collected in my drawer. I chose different items out of them and arranged seven little packages. For sale in my shop, shipping within Europe.

random atelier pics

--------
Some pictures from last week. I got new cases to avoid the mess of letters on my shelfs. I need a new typecase cabinet and want to build it myself. But first I need to get rid of the cold.

--------
After school I did an apprenticeship in ceramics. We had to keep a report book that must have been shown to the director every three month. I hated to list all jobs. It bothered me and so I was more than three weeks behind.

Times changed. I started to write a report booklet a year ago. I list the day, the time, the colour and the quantity of cards I print. I can see when I was slow or the amount of cards was too little. Furthermore I can calculate the amount of paper I would need the next month and order ahead of time. I also looked for the quantity of christmas cards I printed last year to be better prepared this time.

A report booklet is not that bad I said to myself. And it's even more fun if you write in those journals that I bought me at r.s.v.p. last week. They are made by paperways and their columns and lines are right my style. Beautiful.

little notebooks

I am also working on my shop to offer shipping in Europe.

Capitals

So generell?
--------
There was some time and ink left on friday so I did a quick print from my type called Mammut. I wanted to start printing specimen sheets long time ago. But somehow I forgot to set the lowercases, so I need to work on that again.
From this type I very like the "Y". The G and P remind me to the old german pen brands Geha and Pelikan which I used in schooldays. I don't like the "N" that much. Do you have a favourite letter in general?

vintage paper bags

--------
Yes I collect vintage paper bags. I find them on fleamarkets or second hand shops, but I normally don't receive them in my postbox. Ha, never say never. This week I got one from Brigitte/Bremen and the other one from Thomas/Paris. You are so nice, thanks a billion for sending me your treasure. I really appreciate that.
I suppose you've read my comment about collecting paper bags in my other blogpost. I am embarrassed about your attention. Writing here on the blog means first and foremost sharing inspiration or knowledge with my readers. I never expected to get so much back from you like comments, emails, visits or letters with treasuries. Thank you very much.
By the way Thomas told me the shop that sells loose cigars still exist. It is called Hajenius, very known for its very best cigars and the art deco interior. You can take a virtual tour here.

ideas need space

Extra Large. Liniert.

--------
My last notebook was a black Moleskine in the biggest size they had. I chose graph paper because there wasn't any plain one and softcover. It was the opposite of cheap. But for the next 2 years I took it everywhere with me and wrote everything down even grocery lists. Then some day there were no blank pages left.

I thought I wouldn't mind and got me a new one; an ordinary notebook in a small size. Would be more handy and not that heavy I thought. But now I was afraid of writing e-v-e-r-ything down, it seemed to be too small and I didn't want to buy me a new one every third week. So I tried to keep more ideas in mind than writing them down. And if I decided a particular idea was worth to jot down I found me searching for my small notebook which was hidden under a stack of paper or in the unknown depth of my bag. That was no fun at all.

The other day I read the "Notizbuchregeln" (How to manage your notebook) on the Notizbuchblog. They've been written by Christian Maehler, the author behind the blog about notebooks. He gave some tips about organizing your fragments of thoughts, ideas, and to do's in your notebook. I do not follow all rules but they were interesting to read and one thing made me immediately stand up and leave for the shopping mall: Your ideas need space.
So here I am with a new Moleskine softcover notebook in the biggest size they had. Extra large. Again.
