Better-than-expected earnings at Intel sent investors pouring back into the market Wednesday, sending stocks higher in morning trading.

Chipmaker Intel Corp.’s report after the market closed Tuesday lifted investor confidence because its sales figures suggest consumers are purchasing computers at a faster rate than anticipated, a potential sign the economy is recovering.

Consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of economic activity. Increased spending by consumers is widely seen as a key to an economic recovery.

Just as important as quarterly results, Intel’s third-quarter sales prediction was bigger than analysts’ forecast, a further indication that the chipmaker believes the personal computer market has bottomed and a recovery is under way.

In another sign the recession is easing, a new report showed industrial companies cut back production again in June, but not nearly as much as they have been in previous months.

The Federal Reserve said production at the nation’s factories, mines and utilities fell 0.4 percent last month, after declining 1.2 percent in May.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 124.39, or 1.5 percent, to 8,483.88. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 13.07, or 1.4 percent, to 918.91, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 35.39, or 2 percent, to 1,835.12.

Yesterday’s Top Performing Small Cap stock:

Green Star Alternative Energy, Inc. (Pink Sheets: GSAE) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer closing up about 1% on trading volume 71,222 shares.

Green Star Alternative Energy is an environmentally conscious, renewable energy company working to develop more than 300 MW (megawatts) of clean electricity through wind energy. The corporate revenue model is two-fold: the use of a renewable resource allows not only for the creation of environmentally friendly energy, but the granting of carbon (greenhouse gas) emission credits which may be traded and sold. Green Star is pursuing a significant opportunity to provide clean energy to the growing Republic of Serbia and neighboring European countries. Through a joint venture with key wind farm and power trading company Notos, Green Star will become the nation’s first developer of wind power. GSAE is focused on green technology and sustainable energy programs like wind turbines, hydro-electric power generation, and other renewable electricity models.

Stocks seesawed in early trading Tuesday as investors weighed strong earnings reports from Johnson & Johnson and Goldman Sachs against a negative reading on inflation.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. posted solid second-quarter results, surpassing analysts’ expectations, thanks to strength in its trading and underwriting businesses.

The New York-based financial giant — long considered one of the strongest banks on Wall Street — earned $2.72 billion, or $4.93 per share, after preferred stock dividends, well above analysts’ forecasts of $3.54 per share.

Investors also cheered a better-than-expected report from Dow Jones industrial component Johnson & Johnson. The health care products maker said its profit fell 3.5 percent, but it still handily topped analysts’ estimates.

A positive report on retail sales also helped buoy stocks. The Commerce Department said retail sales rose in June by the largest amount in five months.

In the negative column, a separate report showed that wholesale prices rose far more than expected in June and the most since November 2007, due partly to higher energy prices.

The 1.8 percent jump in the Producer Price Index, which tracks the costs of goods before they reach store shelves, follows a 0.2 percent increase in May and was much more than the 0.9 percent gain economists had expected.

That sent Treasury yields higher on worries about inflation. The yield on the 10-year note rose to 3.40 percent from 3.35 percent as its price fell 13/32.

In early trading, the Dow fell 17.54, or 0.2 percent, to 8,314.14. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 1.04, or 0.1 percent, to 900.01, while the Nasdaq composite index lost 6.25, or 0.4 percent, to 1,786.96.

Our model is designed to attract the first time buyer and is starting to gel as the average age of our patients are 6-7 years below the industry norm, coupled with average selling prices $300-$800 lower than our competition every day. “Too many consumers are confused over misleading discount programs, if it’s too good to be true it usually is,” commented Mr. Sacco, CEO of HearAtLast Holdings, Inc. “HearAtLast simply has the best price day in and day out with a real 90-day no hassles return policy and 2-year warranty program on all hearing aids.”

“Its no wonder that Wal-Mart is seeing higher consumer traffic during these recessionary times,” noted Mr. Sacco. Recent Reuters reports that higher-income shoppers are spending more at Wal-mart and that the store chain’s business has increased from both lower- and higher-income shoppers.

Investors are waiting for corporate earnings reports to arrive before they push into stocks.

Stocks turned lower early Monday as investors awaited earnings reports this week, including key results from banks.

Investors have been cautious as they prepare for earnings reports this week. Banks have been among the most hurt companies since the recession began in late 2007 as investment and loan losses piled up.

Financial shares got a boost after banking analyst Meredith Whitney said on CNBC that she was upgrading her view on Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which has long been considered the strongest bank amid the economic downturn. She also noted Bank of America Corp., one of the hardest hit by mounting loan losses, could provide value for investors.

Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Citigroup Inc. are all scheduled to report second-quarter results this week.

The earnings reports will give investors a chance to see whether there was any meaningful economic improvement during the second quarter, and so far expectations are low. Stocks rallied in the spring amid hope of a recovery in late 2009, but the market has struggled since mid-June as more investors began to doubt that assessment.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 2.57, or less than 0.1 percent, to 8,143.95. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 1.91, or 0.2 percent, to 877.22, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 16.59, or 0.9 percent, at 1,739.44.
